Today I bought some gold jewelry and paid using credit card.

The shop charged me 2% for card fee and the fee attracts GST too.

I'm wondering if the so called card should attract GST or not?

I'm not complaining or what but overall deal is still cheaper than if I buy it from Tomei/Wah Chan/Poh Kong franchise.
*
Refer to the reply I posted from Visa / Mastercard.

Human Nature already enclosed the link.

Please do not hesitate to contact your merchant bank and make a fuss.

And GST is on the total amount of sales, so you will be slapped with 6% GST on top of your 2% Card charges.

QUOTE(Savor_Savvy @ Dec 19 2015, 10:33 PM)
New to cc. Plan to apply for one. Any recommendations? For petrol (SHELL) and online purchases.
*
No single card to cover both.

No salary bracket as well?

1. MBB Ikhwan ( Friday~Saturday 5% Petrol + Groceries) OR
2. UOB One ( Petrol weekend 5% + 2% $mart at BHP ) OR

For Online :-

1. CIMB CR ( RM 30 online CB / 2% petrol on daily basis ) OR
2. UOB Vox ( 5% online / 1 swipe per month / utilities applicable )

If salary above 100k :-

1. MBB Visa Signature ( Daily groceries and petrol 5% )

+

2. PBB Visa Signature ( Online 5% )

For more info, go to respective thread and take a peek.

I asked the same questions before. No one could give a clear answer in this forum. I remember subsequently someone mentioned VISA card shouldn't have charge us 2% while master cards are allowed by their term.
I bought jewellery and being charged 2% few times at different shops before. What to do....
*
It's not SHOULD but it's MUST not charge.

BNM already stated, no minimum purchase and no fee should be imposed to customers.

I have repeated encourage people to stop such practice by listing the outlet and making official paper trail complaints to BNM / Banks / VISA or MASTER or AMEX to encourage them to ban such behaviors as well.

Side note : I shopped at Tiffany, never once I've been asked to cough up any surcharges tongue.gif

Pick your merchant wisely, if you don't want to get slapped with surcharges.

Tiffany or other famous jewellery shop has no issue. Issue is with those smaller jewellery shops who sell at cheaper price. They will charge extra 2% service charge if pay by cc.
*
Sometimes, I hesitate to go smaller shops because of the hassle.

Paying more may be less stressful and annoying to me.

But back to the topic on hand, whether big or small, they still not within their rights to simply charge you extra 2%.

2% of 10,000 is a lot.

You can pay your entire car's price using Credit Card but you can't pay your car or housing loan with credit card....

Public Bank rejected my application for Islamic Plat and as usual no reason will be given. I asked if can appeal, he said no, the decision is final. I asked when can re-apply again, he said after 1 year. sleep.gif

No thanks. I hate PBB now. sleep.gif

So I got slapped with a 2% surcharge recently.

Not wanting to argue, I quickly to down the terminal issuer and made copies of the tax invoice and cc slip.

Made a total of 4 complaints ( a new record ) to

1. Issuing bank's cc
2. Merchant's bank
3. Central bank of Malaysia
4. Customs department as well.

Hope it will teach them a lesson. :/

Keep us updated. Why customs?
*
They are GST registered.

I assume the extra amount will not go to Custom's pockets. So gonna try my luck and lodge a complaint with them as well to ensure compliance in some sense.

Customs so far, my best bet so far. Complaint about few GST registered people, they reacted fast and slapped them with hefty fine laugh.gif

Imagine 2% for 20-30 people a day, they would've received almost extra 100-1XXX per day.

Maybe should lodge a complaint to LHDN as well hahaha.

I'm always curious on the accounting treatment for merchant who charges surcharges on credit card usage laugh.gif

I was told bank charged them 2%-3% for using the cc terminal, if the item they sell very minimal margin and don't charge the 2% back to customer they'll lose money. I don't know it's true or not.
*
Depends on terminal rental agreement.

And honestly, most shop's margin is roughly 10~20% if not they won't be selling tongue.gif

Don't care whether they lose money or not, I don't see this practice being done in countries like HK, US and UK.

What you see is what you pay. No such BS as need to cough up extra.

Go ahead and make a complaint.

I am sure you'll get an answer from BNM.

Heck, even customs would be interested to hear about it.

they charge the 6% with total amount which is quite hard

i will ask them to make a seperate receipt with 6% charge for cc which i doubt they will
*
Err, meaning that the price of the item excludes GST?

If the price already includes GST, another 6% would means that they are double collecting? laugh.gif

My case was they charged the extra 2% into the CC, but the tax invoice's different.

yes already include GST yet they say if u use credit card we will charge 6% .. if u use cash to pay.. then u dont have to pay for 6% cc charge..

any idea whats this all about?

As explained by Fruitie.

submit evidence to bnm and bank

This is a bit extreme.

Imagine u buy a 4K TV cash and another 4K TV via card.

Terus 20k gone just to get someone fined 10k laugh.gif

what they did was they took my final amount and multiplied by 0.02 which is equivalent to 2% and not 0.02% as they wrote at the cashier. i already suspected their mistake as nobody would charge 0.02% to customers as it's a very small amount which can be just absorbed by the merchant anyway.
*
QUOTE(intrepidity85 @ Jan 19 2016, 08:05 AM)
let's report these unethical merchants to BNM

Why you all no complaint like me? I think many merchant hate me already.

Every single chance I can complaint, I will make a full written report and CC every single relevant parties.

My recent one by UOB kinda suck. 7 days already and yet to see reversal on my account.

My previous exp with MBB / CIMB much better. 7 days I see the amount credited back jor :/

Maybe need to CC in BNM to increase efficiency.

you mean the extra 2% or 3% fee refunded to your account directly?
please share to us your email draft to bnm lah. tongue.gif
how do you prove the extra charge? showing your receipt vs your cc slip?
*
Just write there :

The price shown on receipt differs with CC slip.

Note the time date stamp on both items.

Now with GST, they won't dare to adjust the tax invoice to make up for the 2% they charge you.

If they do, they'll be in a bigger trouble with Customs for GST.

Anyways, they credit back the amount as per the official tax invoice for my case.

QUOTE(Human Nature @ Jan 19 2016, 12:23 PM)
reversal meaning it is 'absorbed' by the merchant or the bank?
*
I think bank absorb 1st, then fine the merchant?

I heard if more than 3-5 complaints, will revoke the terminal.

I feel like purposely go there 10 times and swipe CC each time to ensure they get fined every single time tongue.gif

Currently I'm holding few credit cards, but every month I almost fully utilize the limit by helping people to purchase item.  More than 20k per month. But my salary not actually not more than 10k per month. Will it cause to bring any issue such as tax inspection?

IRB don't have time to do tax audit on you unless you're a company and you're buying stuffs around 200k per month on behalf of other people laugh.gif

Just curious.

Late payments would mean there would be some kinda record on the CCRIS record even thou the finance charges/late payment are eventually reversed out by the bank right?

Was told to defer my payment until investigations are completed but I don't want to risk a strike on my records. Any opinion on this mater?

If your conversation with the CS (since you said you were told, i assumed you called up CS) was recorded, then it's ok to listen.
Otherwise, you should call up CS to clarify again.
*
I don't feel comfortable deferring such a huge sum while waiting for their investigations and not having any form of legal acknowledgement.

I drafted an email and CC-ed in BNM for safety. I should receive a fast reply soon now that I pulled in BNM into this.

I don't want to have 2 strikes on my CCRIS when it's not even my fault to begin with sweat.gif

Now I know how errand merchants are surviving. They are aided by stupid officers who does not bother to read the rule book before replying customers.

Nevertheless, I paid full amount and preparing to cancel card and issue a formal complaint to central bank to close case.

Lesson learnt : UOB has one of the worse CS tongue.gif
