Isn't it a shame these days that we don't really know what we buy is the real thing or a fake. Or perhaps it was produced by the same factory anyway?

GW Cycles looks good. I should pay them a visit in a few weeks time and check out the bikes. Didn't know they have Birdys. Do they allow test rides? 🤔

Wow, you certainly know people in the business eh?

BTW is Rodalink's prices generally good? I'm going to get a couple of Schwalbe tyres if they are cheaper in KL. Can't decide to just replace the back Big Apple or replace both with Marathon Supremes. I know Marathon Plus is probably best but I don't do that many kms, so I think the Supremes would be fine.

Thanks bro
But my bike still cqn use caliper brakes?
*
Why don't you try it out? There's a few factors involve. What size tyre will you use? Is there a provision to use caliper brakes on your fork? Some brake caliper will have longer arms to suit the fork you have. The mudguard is usually bolted through the caliper bolt anyway, but if you are using wider tyres, then it may not fit.

I've never tried myself as I found the V-brakes more than sufficient.

Well I've taken the Speed TR for a longer ride after adjusting all the clamps and headset. Rides much tighter now. The ride is very supple as you would expect from a Speed, but more so now with the Big Apple tyres. I might have jumped the gun a bit dismissing those wide tyres. They are actually not too bad. Soaks up bump etc very well, so much so it felt like having suspension!

The Speed TR is never going to win races, but at touring speed, 20kmh or so, it makes sense. Push it and you will tire yourself out, ride it at the sweet spot and you can go forever. My Bike Friday Tikit is much faster with its 16" wheels, but the ride is harsh compared to the TR.

I will stick with the Big Apples as they actually weigh less than the Marathon/Marathon Plus. To lighten the bike a bit, I'll just replace the seat pump post and remove the front frack. I may even try and get a new front wheel and not bother with the dynamo hub and I seldom ride at night. I think that should just put enough sparkle into the bike!

I'm intending to tour next year.

I'm thinking of having a front load instead of a back load.  Pros and cons?

Am using a Dahon Speed D8/P8.  Am in the midst of getting all the stuff that I'll need.  Intending to tour from March 2016.
*
Depends on how much stuff you want to carry. The front rack is lower to the ground so you can only have smaller panniers. Once loaded up, the front will have a heavier feel obviously. If you have a touring rack at the back, I'd rather use that. If not and the smaller pannier suits, it's ok too.

hello, question about general bike, non folding.

I wanna ask, if classic bike like this, usually only single gear. is it possible to make it to have gears? for climbing general housing area hilly places:

[attachmentid=5479721]

I always like the classic look but usually they only have single speed.
*
If the bike is only single speed, then you are unlikely to have a rear derailleur mount. Easiest would be to get a hub gear, maybe a three speed and they will give you a wider range. I have a modern single speed and I can get to most places, so you'll need to know where you ride and accept its limitations.

Would u rather buy new Tern Link B7 at 1360 or used MU P8 at 1200? For me newbie the entry link b7 look tempting but MU P8 got better spec right?
*
I would definitely buy a used higher end model rather than a new entry model. You get better/nicer parts. It is only a bicycle, so don't worry if it is a few years old. Make sure the frame is not damage, hinges ok, and everything else is adjustable.

You buy a entry model, then upgrade, you will definitely over-spend and definitely lose money. sweat.gif

What do you bicycle connoisseurs reckon on the Tern B7?

I'm looking for something under under 1.5k with a dependable frame for commuting.
*
Looking at the specs, this bike is likely to be low geared. The 7 speed may be more difficult to upgrade if it is a freewheel and not cassette. Best to go for a test ride and see if it can handle the speed you are likely to travel at.

Oops! I mean to all the sifu*

May I know where to get Tern Link P24 h in Malaysia ??as I've tried asking around and hv been told that it is not available anymore.

Or is there any touring bike that is below rm 3k that Sufi can recommend?
*
This Tern Link P24 would be similar to my Speed TR. Both dual drive but Tern uses a Sturmey Archer hub whereas mine uses the SRAM. Ive read that the SA hub is not as good due to slippage and Tern later phased it out and I think gone back to SRAM. I have to say that the SRAM hub is very good.
Looks like you'll have to wait for a second hand one to appear or maybe get something like the Speed P8, or equivalent from Tern.

Perhaps are you interested to sell off yours?? *wink! *wink! tongue.gif !
*
You are a few years too late! These are all discontinued.

Sell to you? Sure, will cost you both arms and legs seeing that you are in Kuching. biggrin.gif

If you are really into the P24, it actually can be modded from a usual Tern Link. You have to start from the Link off course. The dual drive is still available online and 8 speed usual drive is everywhere. In fact the cost might be even cheaper. Just google SRAM dual drive and check the online sites. On the flip side, if the drive is the prime reason, there's no barring that other frames can be used, eg. Dahon Speed, MU, Falco or even their sister frames from FnHon.

Again, hahaaaha...................Why not the whole 30 speed with the regular FD and FD ?  laugh.gif  Also this don't make the rear heavy like the Link P24. It's really heavy at the rear. Cheers!  thumbup.gif
*
I have considered modding but it actually cost too much. SRAM dual drive hub will be at least US250-300 plus shipping, plus shifters.
If you have a contact to get cheap SRAM DD hub, please let me know as I'm interested to get one for my single speed bike.
Thanks! biggrin.gif

When SRAM started, they don't have an internal gear division. They then took over SACHS. Those days, only Sturmey Archers and Sachs are the main players. Sturmey Archers is around even when I was riding a Raleigh Chopper 1977 (also 3 speed) and they lasted till today. After SRAM took over Sachs, the price skyrocketed because of their branding and not necessary because of their expertise. So, why limit yourself to a SRAM ?  hmm.gif

Sturmey Archers actually have 5 and 8 speed (if I can recall). The 5 speed shares the same interior measurements with the 3 speed. That means if you can buy the 5 speed innards ( probably from UK ), you can fit it into a 3 speed Brompton hub. SO, that converts the 6 speed into 10 speed. Nobody here does that here. I have actually bought an old SA hubs and dis-assembled it and rebuilt it and it is actually not that hard. Alas, Brompton owners don't trust non-Brompton owners to do their precious bikes so I never service for anyone before.

I would rather go for the Shimano Alfine which comes in 8 speed (very cheap nowadays) but the 11 speed would cover more ratios. A cheaper option will be the Shimano Nexus which is 8 speed. Best option of all, I would say IMO  wink.gif  is to hunt for a used Rohloff in eBay.  thumbup.gif 14 speed which covers almost the entire 3 X 9 speed of the conventional FD and RD gearing systems. Also Rohloff are maintenance free!

tongue.gif  Cheers!
*
Hey, I had a Chopper too! Five of us kids used to pile on the bike and we went places, with me doing the cycling! Haha
Yes there are options but I like the combination of cassette and hub. I had an Alfine hub before on two bikes, but it was heavy and there's always one ratio "missing" due to the gaps in the ratios. The SA 5 speed is apparently less reliable than the 3 speed. Funny though, the 3 speed Sachs in my Bromption shifts less smoothly than the current BWR hub, but the SRAM DD 3 speed is just as good plus you have the benefit of playing with more ratios to suit, and the hub is lighter. Rohloff would be amazing but the weight......

Ok, not sure if there's any interest for a Dahon Stow bag? I have a brand new one. These were US$140 shocking.gif which means they cost the same as some bikes!

These are nicely padded and thick. Is that good value for money? You'll have to decide. But please do not compare these with what you find on Taobao ok?

Asking US$110

final deal done @ 1k. thx sifu for advice, think I m going to like it, even this one actually for my princess...

owned by lady, din take care of it real good.. sweat.gif
*
OK the lady obviously did not look after the bike too well. I would give it a good clean and polish and good oiling. Looks like it has been left outdoors? Check if gear changes smoothly as the cables may have stretched and the RD is a bit rusted. Are the rims running true and brakes OK? If she hadn't used it much, the folding clamps should be tight. Just check.

Luckily all clamps, gears, brakes working fine.  rclxms.gif

I only own single gear bike so dun know how to describe whether gear shift smooth or not.  blush.gif

I used IPA cleaned up stain on body but having tough time remove those tiny black dot on rear wheel, any suggestion?
*
Not sure what black you are referring to. Try rubbing some degreaser on it and see if that dissolves it?

hmm nice one.but how about the price?is the price like B?
*
Strange, I would have thought the 20" would be more popular. I know there is a Dahon Classic club somewhere and they have pretty nicely done up bikes. Looks nice but in its original form may not ride that well.

New folding bike coming. Launching this 20th December.  Folds like a Brompton, much much lighter than a Brompton and wheels a full 18 inch, bigger than a Brompton. It's marketed at USD2400 for the regular black colour and USD2500 for the blue/black ones. Fully carbon fibre inclusive the handlepost and handlebars, seat post too,Interested contact Chedech at
https://www.facebook.com/chedechbike/
This bike has no provision for mudguards or rack so that alone will put some people off. The existing rear guard looks weird. I still like my foldy in steel or titanium and 9kg is not light for a carbon one don't you think?
