As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Great pass by Helelela, and great finish by Memphis. I was annoyed seeing the players not daring to forage forward and take risks.

Fletcher early on was horrible but after that he turned to a crucial player for us before his injuries did him in.

MU did more in that 5 minutes after conceding compared to the 85 minutes before. Fuck that philosofi

The Watford player threw the ball at such force at a low angle and to me it looked like intentionally aiming at Blind.

But too bad we have fooking LVG. I won't be surprised if Herrera gets sold. Gonna be such a fooking pity. Meanwhile Rooney gets a new contract from LVG.

Inb4 we somehow sign Ronaldo for half of 60M in January.. brows.gif

My concern is..he's turning 31 next February. But with how he likes to take care of his fitness, he should be able to play on the highest level until the age of at least 34.

Sad he got injured, with Rooney (finally!!!) forced out with illness it was a perfect chance for him to work his magic ala that assist for our 1st goal.

Don't worry, Moyes already took care of that. Seriously though, the way you go on about LVG you would think we're in the bottom 6 ala Chelsea. We might yawn at the style of football currently being served up, but in terms of results it's not too bad and there are positives (midfield is actually stronger than it was in any of the recent years, young players are getting chances).

I know there is plenty of room to improve, and definitely hope for that... all I'm saying is that at least now we can complain Herrera is not playing enough. Previous years we didn't even HAVE a Herrera instead it was Anderson/Gibson/etc

RM will only sell at 80m. Given his age, 60m might be doable as he is still one of the top 3 footballer in the world.

For that money, would rather give some 25m rated italian or spanish younger technical players a try.

Even if we get robben and ronaldo, how many seasons can we squeeze out of them? Hope United dont end up like milan where great players go and retire after their peak.

nar, Ronaldo too selfish. That was one of the reason of their fallout.

Imagine if RVN played with Class of 92. Becks, Giggs, Scholes supplying to him in their prime.

yea if we buy Ronaldo at 20m, real m treat us like afool.
that means they practically spent 20m to squeeze Ronaldo in the last few yrs for the trophies, and then dump him back to us..
u think we fool.

30m for Ronaldo I will still CONSIDER! 20m is a good buy! biggrin.gif

Technically, even if we pay 80mil jersey sales and marketing will probably recoup the amount in 1-2 years.

Tikus pandan 60mil vs CR 80mil, CR is worth it.

Finance is not the thing for that deal due to the above, it's more about the team balance and longer term building. Bale would probably be better in both aspects. If we get CR then the attack has to be 100% built to feed him and make him happy... meaning Martial will have to learn to be a LW kuli and feed CR.

Bale = he can play on the wing and Martial can play as striker.

If he stayed there wouldn't be the Tevez, Rooney, CR7 combo upfront.
Tevez was brought in to replace RVN as a like-for-like striker.

SAF had to make a choice...

Develop Rooney and CR7 or stick with an aging RVN.

I didn't think it was an easy decision by a long shot.

I suppose RVN knows his value and was at his peak then would've cornered SAF to decide.

Although Ronaldo is getting older, but he's still a deadly finisher if there's service to him. And service is something I don't often see in our team currently.

Barcelona legend Carles Puyol could help his "friend Louis van Gaal" to lure Spain international Marc Bartra from the Nou Camp to Manchester United, according to reports. Puyol, who retired from football in 2014, is starting a new career as a football agent and is about to get the services of Bartra as his first client.

The 24-year-old defender was heavily linked with a move away from the Champions League holders during the summer transfer window after it emerged he was available for €12m (£8.4m, $12.7m) due to a clause in his contract that stipulated his original €20m fee will drop to that cut-price figure unless he plays the agreed number of games in a season.

How about sergi roberto? Quite skillful, still young, not so hensem but boleh la diharapkan.

But sadly i dont think barca will let him leave so easily.

super flat 2nd half.. i think shrek play alot better than his usual self today. it's just that filosofi is too slow, cant see the urgency to get a goal.

might have win if lingard convert, but how to win a match with such pass pass pass and hope to convert 1-2 chances.

Again we started the game like we are leading with 2-3 imaginary goals. Once lvg realized the plan are not working, he changed from slow passing game to launch the ball from deep to fellaini head, brilliant.

Only one month ago the straight outta UCL joke was on Arsenal while United looked good on moving as they scrap results despite some tepid performances.

Fast forward one month and the situation has now reversed. Arsenal actually looks more likely to move on than United.

As happy as I am as a rival fan to see our rivals falter, now is not the time. I'm happy that Arsenal has recovered from being almost certain to drop out. I'm also worried with United's struggles in Europe so far. To make things worse, City whose plans to secure top spot in the CL group fell through despite being on the receiving end of a thumping over the weekend for "resting" players ahead of the tie. This meant that they will be drawn against a top placed team and that team will 99% be Barca as it is their "destiny" to get knocked out by them every season.

English football are desperate for better coefficient. I'm rooting for all English teams to make at least QFs as we cannot afford to lose that sacred 4th spot.

Same. LVG gameplay is just piss boring.

He can act like he's boss for now and say Scholes knows nothing but at the end of the day when he's gone, Scholes will remain as a Man Utd Legend while LVG will just pass by as a sidenote.

The only way he's going to win anything for MU is by luck cause of his fooking filosofi.

wait till his luck runs out... trying to outpass opponents and pray for a miracle. whole season playing rooney = 10/11. and whole game not trying to shoot at all.

Van Gaal said: ‘The result is disappointing because I have still the feeling we could have finished this game several times. We have created in the first half, I think, three open chances. Second half we had the chance of Jesse Lingard.’

always same crap. created so few chances and blame player not clinical. 4 chances vs barca is acceptable but psv....

I think Moyes played better gameplay?
Moyes & LVG records are almost identical

Except that this time Man Utd rivals are inconsistent & LVG spent hundreds of millions to produce this shit football

Imo, LVG is doing worse than Moyes. Moyes had an incompetent Kayu in his first season so bot nothing but overpriced players.

LVG had 2 summers and spent nearly half a billion and produce fook piss football. Even Moyes did better than LVG in UCL.

SAF comes and build the club with his greatest philosophy..the NEVER GIVE UP attitude..
It is not just about how you pass the ball...and this guy come for 3 years to conquer all by hoping the opponents being bored to death on the field looking at sideways and back pass possession football...

What we are actually need is new mind set. This kind of attitude can't be accepted anymore. Too soft and no passion. Even our clean sheet record quite impressive but you can win nothing without a goal.

For how much i've been supporting LvG, i'm starting to lose my patience over his style of play. But then again, the players had chances to score..especially Lingard, not once but twice! Though he's not a goalscorer, but still..crucial moments! sweat.gif

In the 2nd half, whenever we get the ball back,we always pass around slowly. No urgency.

I really want to see LVG get a big slap.
Hopefully he wakes up after that.

We played well in the first 45.. After that all seems pancit..

Momentum was loss around 50+ 60 minutes. The rhythm was gone. The only thing that I found wrong with the manager was that he did not go into the technical area to motivate the players. That's it.

This thread is becoming too negative. Win, lose or draw also got things to grumble about.  Change the thread title to 'Manchester Disunited Street Grumbler - Unity Against United'
*
Somehow you seems to think that LVG = UNITED. Hating on LVG = Hating on United.

Just because we support and love the club, doesn't mean we have to love the manager irregardless of how he's doing.
Like how we love this country, doesn't mean we have to love the current premier irregardless.

Yeah SAF also said to support Moyes yet he also stepped in choosing the next candidate when Moyes was proven incapable of managing a club like MU. If his words are to be followed blindly, he should have objected the board in firing Moyes.

So don't just take things on the surface.

If LVG showed initiative of changing the team for the better, sure we can support him. But it's already a season and a half and he's still stumbling around stubbornly. He stumbled into Top 4 last season and we are currently Top 4 cause other top team is also stumbling around. Lucky Louis isn't called lucky louis for nothing. Next season we are going to continue stumbling in UCL group stage the way he's setting up the team to play.

Depay was not so good. Tried few times to dribble pass his defender but phailed. Rooney i just can recalled marah marah of his teammates lol.

I see we jalan jalan banyak, not much urgency especailly with the two Schs in the midfield

At least in 1st half, Lingaard was good, there's hope when you see him doing the running etc, the drive was there. But in 2nd half, didn't really see it from him, maybe tired or what i dunno.

Manchester United whistleblower grumbles 'I'm only half the player I should be under LVG'

A Manchester United player has given an extraordinary off-the-record briefing to a high-profile football journalist which is ruffling feathers among fans.

The player, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Daily Telegraph's Jason Burt that he feels his is only "half the player he can be", because of manager Louis van Gaal's tactics and approach.

"I've got to be careful what I say here," Burt told the BBC in a radio interview.

"I've spoken to one player at United who told me he's half the player he can be here at the moment, because of the way they're playing.

"He doesn't feel it's fair on him, he doesn't feel it's fair on the fans. He can't express himself properly and he finds it very difficult to play here."

*shrugs* it could be a lot of players.

The only guys it's safe to say it won't be are the defensive guys who are playing regularly, cos they're getting a lot of props AND being defenders less likely to complain about being unable to express themselves.

QUOTE(Minecrafter @ Nov 27 2015, 07:16 AM)
Rumour of Ancelotti to Bayern and Guardiola to City is starting to heat up..

Prepare yourself, we're entering one of those dark periods... sweat.gif
*
Pfttt rumours as always. Before this Ancelotti linked with a lot of clubs. Pep pulak linked with City for the last 2 years, also linked with us and Arsenal for ages. Rumours are a waste of time.

QUOTE(limjenson @ Nov 26 2015, 11:56 PM)

*
I'm curious, since you give the impression that you think LVG is a Lucky idiot who should be sacked. If the board somehow sees it the same way and the axe is looming, who do you think can come in and guarantee good results (i.e. at least comparable table position to LVG) but also play free-flowing attacking football to do so?

- Pep? Anak murid LVG, his style would be similar to LVG. Bayern ex-players and fans also saying the same thing about him as LVG haters are saying now. If anything I suspect this is the guy Kayu wants @ OT after LVG 3 yr contract expires, simply because he has the profile and his Barca side were amazing in marketing/results terms. The man Zlatan kenot tahan. Sino is probably PRAYING he never comes to OT.
- Ancelotti? Not particularly offensive, although his sides would attack more than our current side but it's not like his reputation for attacking teams = SAF level. He makes balanced teams and seems to adjust to team. Might do better in CL since he has a good record there, but his league title tally means we are not going to feel very happy in the league either.
- Giggs? Experience insufficient and even he admitted his games as caretaker manager made him realize he wasn't ready.
- Simeone? His teams don't play free-flowing attacking football, they play attrition style football.

Personally, I think this is a fair comment: http://www.thenational.ae/sport/english-pr...e-ferguson-days

Yep, but what to do? If a player is not happy but no balls to say outright to the manager or ask for transfer but at same time cannot keep mouth shut and be a good boy then this will happen.

Would have loved Klopp but let's just write that chapter off the book forever now.

Pep - Most likely nosince he is apparently off to City.
Simeone would be a preferred choice. His team may not be playing free-flowing attacking football but still could this be more because of the resources he have at AM and the league? If he comes to MU and have a larger fund for him to play with, it should be interesting. Furthermore his AM teams are generally solid defensively yet attacking enough.

Another option would be Ancelotti and Giggs then if Giggs does not feel he's ready yet. The defensive work done by LVG is awesome. Ancelotti can try to work more adventurous attacking with Giggs.

It's just that LVG possession football style is too mechanic. It's like he wants everything to be clockwork. Football is all about moments of magic. It takes the imagination out of football. It's weird that he takes risk playing youngsters but doesn't take risk with his gameplan.

Well, you're right. Not defenders for sure. rclxms.gif
But the tweets i saw on twitter were getting more and more earlier. Hope ti doesn't happen.. sweat.gif

No manager is as good as SAF. About LvG, some matches, we play like we're serious contenders for the title. Like the 3-0 win against Everton. That's one of our best performances of the season. I'd say it's the consistency and the matter of finishing chances. I doubt the LvG haters will be using their vuvuzelas laugh.gif to #LvGOut if we finish those chances. Who's fault when the chance goes begging? The manager or the players? The latter of course. Martial had 1 really good chance to score against PSV, Lingard had 2. cry.gif
Solid defence is nice, but boring match kinda kills me at times. laugh.gif

Klopp = timing was never on, and that ship has sailed.

Pep = City rumours are just that, until there are more than rumors it's not worth thinking about. Sneijder was rumoured to join us for how many years? Gaitan also LOL. If he was available would you even be happy with him being manager, knowing his style?

Simeone = really surprised you say this. There are goals, yes. But he is just as structured and tight as any other manager in terms of system. He is all about defence being solid, press opponents, do well in set pieces. Went and bought Torres back, you can compare Torres with Rooney in terms of "eleh last time amazing but now sampah why play him at all" effect. Plus language and new league = sure he will be better?

It's just that LVG possession football style is too mechanic. It's like he wants everything to be clockwork. Football is all about moments of magic. It takes the imagination out of football. It's weird that he takes risk playing youngsters but doesn't take risk with his gameplan. << this part I agree, but why is it even a surprise? It's not like Ajax/Bayern/Barca/Holland under him were like our 99 team glorious attacking in waves. In all 4 cases he was praised (later, after he was sacked.. while he was manager fans/ex player ALWAYS complain) for the system he brought in and the young players he promoted. Not for the quality of the football being exciting or glorious goal scoring.

Do you buy a Volvo/BMW and then complain it isn't a Ferrari?

It feels like we are taking the things he has done well for granted, while getting more and more angry at his shortcomings. If that is our mindset, then will ANY manager ever be good enough? Even SAF had fans turn on him in some way in at least 2 occasions during his career as manager, it's only after he retired that everyone looks back and sighs while thinking there will never be another like him.

Moyes = yea, NOBODY expected 7th place finish after winning the previous season. Drop in results yes, but 7th was just stunning for everyone.
LVG = this bad? in terms of entertainment and goals, you might say so and have a very valid point. But in terms of results? Looking at how other clubs with more settled teams are playing, the results are not amazing but are not unbelievably bad. That said, it's barely 1/3 of the season done. It could get a lot better, it could get a lot worse. We will only know later.

Manchester United Have an Ex-Player Problem in the Media

Oh. Look. Paul Scholes and Roy Keane have been in the media after a Manchester United match again. Oh. Look. They've been giving the team an absolute hammering again. Must be Thursday.

The United midfield of the late 90s and early 2000s was one of the best things to happen to the club in years when they were playing, but some of their former stars have started to become a massive pain since retiring, with Scholes in particular taking any opportunity to rip into the club and manager Louis van Gaal.

Keane's comments about Wayne Rooney on Wednesday night were particularly harsh, managing to criticise just about everything about the United skipper from his fitness to his mental state, from his off-field activities to a general summation that he just 'looks awful'.

I think some of these ex-players should just STFU. Keano is correct on Rooney though. whistling.gif

United will most probably be blitzed from the very first minute, just like what Arsenal did to them in the 1st 20 minutes. Only thing is, I don't think Leicester would hold back even after 20 minutes. Be prepared to be further disappointed. blink.gif

Minute 16 - Bastian Schweinsteiger passes the ball 30 degrees forward to his right instead of Smalling who was open and unmarked right behind him (way too risky!)

Minute 45 - Fans are chanting PASS! PASS! PASS! and DEFEND! DEFEND! DEFEND! - they are loving my philosophy.

Minute 85 - Wayne Rooney skews the ball wide of the goal (wind speed: 5km/h direction: north east - unlucky if only wind had been in our favour) after being sent on by a Herrera throughball (risky, should have continued probing - reminder to bench Herrera next match)

Minute 90+3 - Fellaini snatches a header goal from a set piece. Nice and easy. Risk free - just the way I love it!

Yes

Well said from Parker and Saad

LVG is putting fear into the players.
"if you dun follow my system....out you go".

so all players are like robots now. All are pre-programmed.
They cannot move freely. They cannot play according to their instinct.
Win or lose, they will still play the same tactic the boss wants them to play.

A long, boring and unimaginative period

Well, at least defensively LvG has fixed it. Lowest goal scored against in the league, only a point off the leader. Only attacking part is unimaginative

United recently has a knack of "hoarding" young GKs. Perhaps, they are thinking of adding another name to that: Gianluigi Donnarumma. Dubbed the next "Buffon". Already playing first team games. 16. 16. 16.

Ever since he joined he has been solid , but nothing out of the world. I think he's best partnered with someone destructive and energetic while he holds and control the ball ( going forward he's just a Rooney who don't lose the ball easily ) .

Another dull performance overall , don't really recall too many good chances created , this feels similar to the city game where we have all the control in the world but we are just too scared to attack in fear of losing the ball and getting countered

I wouldn't said bastian is solid, he's just average to me. He used to run with the ball with the when he was at bayern and national team, not sure why not now.

Rooney as always contribute nothing. A player who earn 300k per week plays so shit and yet keep having the trust of a manager week in week out.

Lvg dare to say we could have won the game. I say we are lucky not to lose. Leicester are more threatening despite the low ball possession. We have 70% of the ball but did absolutely nothing.

He actually had a decent game. A lot of times he threatened a fair bit for a CM. Carrick was a lot more anonymous in comparison (and I am not a Carrick hater).

If Pep joins Sino will have a ragefest LOL!!!!

Raiola can Fakoff, if Raiola is his agent give for 1 mil also dowan. Why? Conlanfirm after x period he will start talking about moving the player to Real/Barca/PSG/mana2 just like he has been doing with Pogba at Juventus. Agent with no class at all. Save time, fakoff.

He has been solid and not out of this world (that said, he has had more scoring threat in last 2 games than most others). But what do you expect given his age and recent injury record? He was never going to bomb around and dominate CM like Keane in his pomp, or even the Basti of 3-5 years ago. He is meant to control games, and I liked what he did. Spread play to wings and found Youngnaldo nicely, got in the box n scored/troubled them.

We did attack a fair bit actually (and Leicester got us on the counter at least 3x, 1 being the Vardy goal, 1 being the Ulloa attempt that he messed up, and 1 being the Vardy break that ended up being dead).

The problem was not how much attacking, it was how threatening and effective our attacks ended up (not) being.

Rooney as expected did nothing of note. Martial was better than Rooney, but not amazing this game. Mata was unremarkable. Memphis got into dangerous positions at least 1-2 times but finishing off.

It says a lot when my memory of our chances in the game now is Bastian being dangerous (goal and at least 1 other time in positioning), Memphis mis-hit, and Darmian's over the bar shot.

Need a striker who can actually kill the ball unlike Captain fatty. Need Herrera to make his super passes/assists.

Yesterdays game I liked that we were setup to exploit space in midfield, but once we reached the penalty box... subpar/ineffective.

Agree with Scholes, we need a world class attacker to shine.

And everyone of you is wrong la. Remember to support what SAF said. Support the manager. Be robots and listen blindly and just support the manager style to play like robots. So many ex-players criticizing the manager plan now is also wrong. Support LVG! BANZAI!
