Hi guys, I've just recently got permission from the mistress of the house to own a snake.
So do you guys know of any breeder in Penang or should I get a snake from a petshop?

Try not to get it from pet shop. WHY?  Normally it will be more expensive and also inferior in quality. I myself never buy any snake from pet shop.

Yeah, thats what I thought. So anyone here got any leads on any breeder in Penang?

I found a Mexican Black King at a pet store, just arrive within a week. It hasn't eaten yet, so should I get it for RM480?

That's the problem, there was a pinky in its tank and the snake totally ignored it. Oh, the snake was not moving around either...
Think that's bad news?

I'm a bit nervous about the waiting part... who knows if somebody got it before me smile.gif
But more to the issue, I don't think the pet store can take care of it that well, seeing that the bearded dragon is full of mites.

bro, there is one shop in ayer itam area just nearby sunshine square. i think he has snakes but his shop is full with bird, do drop by.
another one is in tg tokong area. just a small shop, after island plaza take the left lane and drive slow, you can spot it.
last but not least toby, you can request them to get it for you. i think they can do it.
*
I didn't know about the ayer itam shop, will check it out... btw, it's sunshine farlim, not sunshine square smile.gif
The one in tanjung tokong, just been there. I thought how they keep their animals is really bad. They used to be better.
Toby seems like the best bet for now.
Also, there's a snake farm just beside the Penang snake temple. Was there few days back but forgot to ask if they sell. I remember from sometime ago that they are also breeder.

That's why now when I purchase a snake, I double check the health.... it is heartbreaking and a waste of money....

There are not many reputable breeders, most are just sellers but some are reputable. It would be luck.... some sellers would not sell their new stock ASAP but keep for about 1 or 2 months to monitor the eating habits and health before reselling..... now this kind of seller lose money sometimes.... The other trader would be one that wanna let go ASAP, and they don't give warranty or provide you with some feeders to start..... now those you must be a bit careful, check the specimen properly and ask for a feeding demo....
*
I'm also trying to learn on how to check the health of the snakes or other reptiles. I've read a few caresheets and buying guides, but those are only words.
Uhmm...
Check for clear eyes, and not skinny specimen
- should be doable.

Snake must be active
- now this is something that I'm confused at, for most snake are always curled up and nothing else.

Feeding demo
- I think this is quite hard. What if it is not feeding time?

Mites
- I don't know what they looks like. Is it the same as those I saw on a beardie? Should we get to hold the snake and check or just see from the enclosure?

Anything else that I missed?

QUOTE(siokjinlim @ Dec 17 2007, 11:56 PM)
bro, try check the garage sale and adpost often... i'm sure reputable breeders will have some snakes for sale from time to time.. thats how i got my lovely snake from..

for instance, try checking the LYN Garage sale now, i see a ballie for sale..
*
I did check on the adpost and garage sales, daily. No, a few times a day biggrin.gif
The few that is nearby didn't respond to me, probably already sold their snake. The rest are mostly CODs and too far away.

And thank you guys for all the suggestions. Appreciate them much.

Hey I have a question.
I've read about feeding snake on another place rather than in its enclosure and I've also read about not handling the snake after it has eaten.
So if I feed the snake somewhere else, then what do I do with the snake?

Really? They have more birds than anything else.

It was a pretty funny sight (to me personally, no offense to birds lovers) to see maybe around 10 middle aged men staring into the sun but was actually at the birds and listening to the birds' singing.

Hey guys, against better advices and my own judgement, I bought a my first snake on impulse from Toby. I think its a Pueblan Milk.

Problem is, there are shedded skins stuck to its body. I've dampen the enclosure and also put in additional wet crumpled newspaper. Will this help?

Put it in a tank with only water. Put the amount that you are confident the snake can rest with it's head out of the water so that it doesn't drown. Leave overnight.

Remove everything else?

Yup. Only water. It needs to have it's body submerged. The remaining unshed skin will soften and either come off or you can very gently rub or scrape it off after it's soaked for a day or so.
*
Okay. Will get right to it.

Haih... after reading up and thinking that I have a little bit of knowledge to make a good purchase, then saw the snake moving around and following my finger, threw everything out and terus buy.

Beautiful snake you've got there... your first snake????

Now you have to resist the temptation to get more snake.... biggrin.gif
Here, I feed my corn snake with live pinky for the first time.  This guy has trouble constricting the pinky
for the first time.... After 30 minutes, the pinky still alive  laugh.gif

Aye, its my first.

And yes, I'm still eyeing the Mexican Black King.
But seriously, getting a second snake probably means sleeping out from the bedroom.
Will wait for the missus to get use to a snake first....... then I strike! laugh.gif

So nice to be able to feed your corn.
I rushed to the petshop right after work to get my snake its first meal but meh.... kedai tutup.

My snake just had its first meal ever since coming home with me.

Funny thing is, it doesn't constrict the pinky before eating it. It just bite onto the pinky and start swallowing. I am a bit worried about this. Should I be?

Sigh..... honestly speaking, it was a heart wretching thing to watch. Especially when the pinky started squeaking. My wife cried after watching the feeding.

Mine did 2 days after feeding smile.gif

It sure is slow for the Snake Thread during the holidays.

Question time!
From what I have read, I should feed my snake about twice a week but the petstore people said to feed once a week.
Which should I follow? What are you guys' pratices?
