Job Title : Vice President
Job Desciption : Actuarial – P&C Years spent in company : Just started Company : Insurance company Industry : Insurance Employment Level : Vice President Experience before joining : More than 10 years Highest paper qualification/ education background : Master’s + Fellow salary : USD 200k + 30-50% bonus + stocks & options Location: Lower Manhattan Actually this is not the best offer I received. Another insurance company in Boston offers me more, but I turned them down because money is not my main concern. The scopes and responsibilities of the position are more important, the potential for future opportunities in NYC is way better. Something I find interesting in this post is that some people here say they are Executive/Sr. Executive level, and I start wondering do we have a different definition of what Executive means. Executive level in my understanding is people above me, probably earning millions a year, with at least an Executive VP title. And I don’t make this up, if you go to global recruiters hiring Executive level people, they are looking for at least USD 300-500k base plus all sort of bonuses/stocks which can stack up to million. You're right, it's definitely a title/industry thing. VPs are a lot more common in the insurance/financial industries for example but in other industries where it's not so title heavy there may be 6-10 VPs considered as executive/senior executive level, all directly reporting to the CEO. |

It is not an industry thing because I realize many people in Malaysia use the executive level title regardless of industry. Maybe it is a common practice in Malaysia to inflate the titles.Insurance industry is definitely not title heavy. If you are talking about the field people, like the sales, or consultants, maybe yes, because they need a good title to leave good impression. But in the corporate actuarial world, it is totally opposite. In my previous company, someone under me with an assistant actuary title earn as much as a VP is other department. |

Maybe it is a common practice in Malaysia to inflate the titles. The executive label is very different in Malaysia, it literally refers to people doing the grunt work ie. executing. As a graduate you start at the executive level, move up to middle management and maybe later to senior management. Not sure if this is what you're referring to?Title inflation is as usual, dependent on industry and company. I work in a very flat company where a team lead is only 3 reporting levels away from the CEO and has an equivalent salary of a VP in a bank. Title inflation is pretty rampant in many places though. |

I think I kind of understand the system in Malaysia now. Basically in Malaysia, when you say you are executives, it means you are somewhat the lowest level doing dirty works in an organization. That it contradictory to my understanding because here when you say you are executives, that means you are the C-level / EVP level of the organization, earning millions a year.Title inflation is as usual, dependent on industry and company. However if we factor in today's USD exchange rate ie RM 4.10 vs RM 3.70 (2006) and cost of living, basically your current salary is way lower compare to back then standard.
