hey everyone

i'm a fresh engineering grad and i'm about to sign a contract at this co. when i applied, i put low expected salary but after comparing with my peers, i believe that i should get higher. can negotiate?

(already got the offer, not yet sign. also, dont worry about the type/reputation/size of company, i'm just asking about the situation) thks
*
Mistakes is from you first as you requested lower salary. Since you have not sign yet, maybe you can try to nego with the HR and see if they can give you a guarantee confirmation salary increment when you are a confirmed staff? Don't expect that there will be increment once you are confirmed as many company especially cinapek company don't practice that. Black and white is your best friend in working world. Without black and white, there's no point you arguing.

Job Title : Vice President
Job Desciption : Actuarial – P&C

Company : Insurance company
Industry : Insurance
Employment Level : Vice President
Experience before joining : More than 10 years
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Master’s + Fellow
salary : USD 200k + 30-50% bonus + stocks & options
Location: Lower Manhattan

Actually this is not the best offer I received. Another insurance company in Boston offers me more, but I turned them down because money is not my main concern. The scopes and responsibilities of the position are more important, the potential for future opportunities in NYC is way better.

Something I find interesting in this post is that some people here say they are Executive/Sr. Executive level, and I start wondering do we have a different definition of what Executive means. Executive level in my understanding is people above me, probably earning millions a year, with at least an Executive VP title. And I don’t make this up, if you go to global recruiters hiring Executive level people, they are looking for at least USD 300-500k base plus all sort of bonuses/stocks which can stack up to million.
*
Most of the time people just to fabricate title so that it makes them look nicer. These title does not necessarily reflect on what they do. In Malaysia the executive level is total different from US, UK. Yes Executive level in overseas are usually above manager level. But yeah, that's Malaysia culture; making things look nice but nothing inside. Literally hanging title but do nothing. tongue.gif

so are you satisfy with ur current job? may i know the company name?

Well not really. I believe my skillsets can attract better salary package. But as I mentioned previously, I do not have certificates even I graduated from Mass Comm because it was a double degree; can't get the cert if one of the two aren't complete.

Company name? Haha, that's too blunt bro. All I can say is ONG HSE industry. wink.gif

Why should age even matter? I thought what matters most is your experience, career satisfaction/ expectation, etc.
*
That's because he was asking to evaluate. 26 years old getting 6k is impressive. 39 year old getting that? Does that sound that impressive to you? wink.gif

Age is not a big factor, but it is when comes to evaluate. A fresh grad get 3k salary vs 35 years old get 3k salary. See the difference there?

QUOTE(happy_berry @ Jul 16 2016, 07:43 AM)
By "evaluate", I think it means whether it makes sense or not or whether it is the norm. Quite shallow to be judging based on its "impression" to you.

Those who are more advanced at their age probably start late (hence the limited experience in said field) and have a very minimum qualification, just like you. Do I shame you for having a 2k salary like that at that kind of age? No. I evaluate based off of your experience & achievement (and maybe prospect of said industry) , and see if it's fair.
*
Yes, you are correct. But how would you know if is justifiable by just comparing experience, achievement vs salary being offered? Age play a big part too when comes to evaluate.

And, letting people know you are considered low income earner does not make one being shameful; at least he is making his own living. I'd reckon it would motivate them to strive harder to earn a better living after knowing so many people earning better than him.

Is it just me, or people with low pay don`t share theirs here?
because from the looks of the salary posted by members here, The numbers are high and I don`t think that`s the average salary for most people.

I might be wrong.

Anyways, here`s mine

==========

Job Title : R&D Technician
Job Description : System integration (I do more then expected compare to other technician, like same job as engineer). Report direct to manager. No one under me. I do my job, done, i go back home.

Company : Local
Industry : Defence / R&D / Aviation
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Fresh
Experience before joining : 0
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Diploma (electrical)
salary : 1.5 -> 1.6 -> 1.8 -> 2k -> 2.3k -> 2.5k
Location: KL

others:
Working hours: 8 hours 5 days a week

Just completed my degree (electrical) and would expect a raise of RM300-500 maybe. I don`t know.
Age: 27 (worked straight after diploma + part time studies) - studies paid by company.
==========

I believe you can get alot better than staying put. Don't get comfy staying at one place. Throw yourself out to interviews and things, get the first hand experience of how much you might be able to earn outside. We can give you sky high salary, or salary that you wish to get now but you will not feel that ohm unless you receive an offer with higher pay. wink.gif

Highest paper qualification/ education background : Diploma (Computer Network)

Am i underpaid ?
*
I believe is abit slight underpaid. Can throw yourself out for interview and secure an offer, then you can compare and contrast. Living cost in Melaka is getting higher and higher. Is better for you to secure better pay jobs before you suffer in later years.

I am serving my resignation notice and next week would be my last. Have a raise of more than 25% increment on next job and I have no complains. laugh.gif Total experience would be around 2 years plus. Many forumers here said is close to impossible to have more than 20% increment on job switch, but I guess what you can do is to prove to them that you have the skill sets that they are looking for. icon_rolleyes.gif

My plus side would be the events I did during free time. Been running charity events since 2011.

My ultimate target
- Have at least RM5000 in two years time
- Passive income of at least RM1000 per month (Before 35)

- Savings for future
- A HOUSE!

Hey guys. Its been some time since i appear in this thread. Well, last job did not turn out to be a long term one. I quitted after 5 month due to niche market and very "cold" industry. Applied in this new company, they willing to give me extra. So my target i set on March this year had just gotten a step closer.

My ultimate target
- Have at least RM5000 in two years time - very close now. Need another thousand and i can cross this off!
- Passive income of at least RM1000 per month (Before 35) - Still thinking what kind of business i can venture into to secure this
- Involve in business - Still thinking
- Savings for future - Plan changed. Saving for cincin. Going to purpose next year. Wish me luck! tongue.gif
- A HOUSE! - Plan changed too. Save up money to renovate current existing house! biggrin.gif

Hope everyone is doing fine here.
