I'm in a dilemma which is demoralising me...
First, let me give you all a brief picture...

I'm currently in a band... I'm the guitarist...
I wish to post some videos of my playing on my Facebook... Short licks... Some inspirational playing... Some composition of mine that I've recorded...
But my leader seems to disallow me doing so... Saying it's a conflict of interest... A violation on code of ethics... Being unprofessional...
He said if I insisted... I should create a new account which has no known band members in it... No band friends in it... And I should use a guitar no one knows I own...

So my question is...
Is it so bad to publish my playing on my Facebook?
Is there such a rule for guitarists?
Is my request to post something of my own considered as unethical? Unprofessional?
It makes me feel very bad... Like I'm the criminal here... But I see a lot of guitarists doing that... Phil X sometimes posts videos of him playing... Jack Thammarat posts video on his demo and jamming...

Of course I'm not a very good guitarist... I'm still trying to get better... So I'm not comparing myself to those guitarists out there... I just want to play and express myself

Please let me know what you think
Don't hesitate to point out if my thinking is wrong
I'm really lost...

Thanks

When you join the band...what's your contract?

But honestly if your own composition/song I don't see a problem laugh.gif

There was no contract...
So there's no infringement involved... Just that he said my doing will be conflicting with the band... Which I don't understand...

Yea... They are all my compositions... So, no plagiarism or copyright issue... Which again I don't understand how is my doing conflicts the band

He made me looked like a man without conscience... >_<

I once told him that I wanted to quit the band... but after discussion... he dismissed my intention to leave... but problem is still not solved yet... I feel like we're not on the same page when we talk about publishing own recording...

this issue has bothered me for quite some time... hence I decided to ask here if there is really such a practice on band members not to post personal composition on Facebook as it conflicts with the band's interest... @_@

What an asshole. Come on man, have some backbone and stand up for yourself.

No there is no such thing. Why the hell is he so controlling? Quit the band man, do you really wanna be involved with this kind of person?

If there's no contract, there shouldn't be a problem.

this is simple.

change your band members.
if you cant even settle this, once production kicks in, planning gigs and promotional items, and finally distribution of the money and reinvesting the money back into the band, you're gonna have a hard time.

note: please ignore my advise if you are currently in Smashing Pumpkins or Megadeth

I'm thinking the same thing too... sometimes I blame myself for being too soft...
but back then I didn't know if there is really such an implementation in music scene or not... I thought that I was wrong... but I just couldn't find a reason of why is it wrong which left me puzzled until now...
It's not like I collaborated with other bands and publish it online or anything similar... I'm doing everything on my own...

Right? I think so too... really don't understand why does he keep on saying it's conflicting...
when I joined the band... there was no discussion regarding this... I sometimes even posted my own recordings back then... but few months back... I told him that I wanted to be a little more active to post more and even videos... he started telling all about conflict of interest... >_<

This is my worry too... we're undergoing that phase now... it'll be extremely hard to reason with him now onwards that I would like to leave... so dead now...
I'm getting discouraged to do my own recording and composition because of this argument with him... every time I want to record one... I feel like "this is unethical"... professional guitarists don't do this...

Even Dave Mustaine himself is a guitarist who left Metallica... or being kicked out by Metallica...
The core member himself has a history to pass on to the guitarist...
Don't get me wrong... I'm not mocking them or what... I like Megadeth too... but not a huge fan of course...

the only code I think every guitarist should have are:
1. Don't be a douchebag
2. read number one again
3. be punctual (time management).

the rest can be tolerated.

In those aspects, they are not my policy... I worry my unpunctuality will cause trouble... so I'll always try to make it on time... because I do not want to carry the fault for messing up things... I couldn't sleep at night if I messed up something that involves a lot of people... if it's just mine alone... well... I reap what I sow...
Why be a douchebag when I can interact happily with them... if the people aren't nice... I'll stay away from them rather than being a jerk like them... again... negativity like this makes me sleepless

But I'm not implying that I'm a person with noble characteristic... I know when to ditch away helping him set up studio to accompany my family for dinner... I wouldn't drive my less-than-two-months car to help him move house... I have my selfish moment too...

It's easy, he thinks you're stealing the limelight of the band.

but, it should be a good promo for the band. You produce short clips, and ppl will go for longer clips.

More like teaser, make people curious.

Try to understand your teammates, what are their expectations. Try to discuss, or, you can just go YOLO

is it? but the band's main genre is pop, rock and something contemporary with vocals... I'm more into instrumental blues, rock, pop-rock, metal... the band's friends wouldn't be interested in genre outside the band's focus right? As in... the friends wouldn't like what I'm playing... so I won't stand a chance to steal their limelight... I presume? I don't know... >_<

I thought so too... I thought if I played something nice... it might seize more attention from the band's friends... maybe getting some good impression on the band... (of course, I'm not good like I can make a change or what... I mean at least... "hey the guitarist in the band is musically active"...)
But... he did not give me a respond on this... it's only "conflict of interest", "violates the code of ethic", "unprofessional" that I'm getting from him...

He doesn't allow me to let my other teammates know about this discussion... he said it might affect them... so, it's only between me and him... I'm in hesitation to discuss this with him already... he started ignoring my messages... I'm on my own now... I don't even dare to talk to my friends about this... I worry they might spread and lead to damaging the band's name... that's why I ask you guys here... let's just hope that this doesn't get to him... else... a lot of bickering awaits...

nah... even if I do video recording... I won't show my face... I just want to share my recordings and composition with my friends... at least be musically active... I have no guitarist friends... all I know have quitted playing... so I wish to actively spend my time posting video... chatting... sharing... hence, what I told my leader... but he didn't give me green light... it's discouraging... no solution... either I hide in the dark... or I force a quit...

It's also tormenting to hear that from him... "use a guitar no one knows you own... create a new account... don't share it among us(teammates)... it's okay to share it in forum or some platforms we(teammates) don't use..."

I feel like... he's giving me this... "okay... I know you broke the rule... I'll let you slip... but do it elsewhere... don't show it here because it's unethical... but yeah... we're friends... so don't let us see it..." >_<

grow some back bone, tell your band mates to piss off

theres no conflict of interest, if there were, they'd have to sue you for it

Haha... Regarding this... It's really something I have to admit that I'm not acting my age... Easily manipulated... Hard to say no... Believe it or not... I've tried to quit for like 3-4 times... But all in vain...

Ya la... That's what I thought too... How is it conflicting? But it's already the second time I'm arguing with him... He still gives me the same answer... >_<

Thanks for the invitation... It's a good consolation to me... But my level is still too below par and I'm currently tied to the band...

Guys... Thanks for the insight... At least I'm quite positive that what I wanted isn't deemed unethical... At least to most of us... Well, mine is an exceptional case for sure... I'll try to grow a spine and set my best course of action to remedy this...

To everyone who had taken the time to reply this... I'm really thankful for your responses and they are inspiring to me... You might be thinking that your comments are just simple opinions in your mind... But to me, they are words of strength... Steer clear my conscience... I know what needs to be done... Thanks again happy.gif
