Hi, welcome to MMU. I will try to answer based on what I know.

1) Online learning has been okay from students feedback. The good thing about MMU is that the lecturers have been exposed to blended learning implementation for years. Since you are doing CS, exams will be fully online. It may be in form of projects, online quiz and/or open book tests.

Why is it a bad choice to go in November(or April). I was planning to enroll in November intake, but I didn't really like online class so I'm considering to enroll in April intake maybe. Or is it better for me to go for July intake next year??

Hi, some forumers have shared their opinions at previous pages. You can check them out. Personally for me, it is the same. The downside probably is less coursemate from the same batch as july is the main intake. Have you registered? fyi the july intake is closing soon.

So apparently Segi university allows their students to come back to campus on the 20th of July, any news about MMU? I really really dislike online learning even for the fact that its incredibly easy to cheat for the exams..

Hello, this is my first time posting on lowyat so not really sure if it's the right thread to post in.
I just have a few questions regarding MMU Cyberjaya

I just registered for this year July 2020 intake, at first I was planning to go for November but people said it was a bad choice to go in November, so I made a last minute decision to go in July. Thankfully it's all online since I'm living abroad and my last minute decision might make me live out on the streets.

1) How has the online learning been so far? Is it doable and how will the exams be? If anyone can share any tips to help for exams or something, I'll be most grateful. (but I don't know when it is loool)

2) If I go there next semester (April), where will be a good place to stay? (Is there some place which is walking distance and safe)  How is the living environment in Cyberjaya and can I go to Bandar Sunway often? And is there a lot of food to buy there? What is the approximate budget per month for food and place?

3) How hard is the Computer Science course? I have no background in Computer Science before as I took Physics, Maths and Chemistry in my Alevels. What does the majority of people choose for their specialisation?

I heard a lot of people say it's not easy to graduate from MMU and I just wanna know how hard is it? In my class, I'm just usually an average student but I took a gap year after Alevels soo may be a little rusty but I'm willing to learn. I also heard that people going to Japan or Korea for their internship, how hard is it to make it a reality?

4) What are the ratio of girls to boys in Computer Science? Is it easy to make friends? (I feel like I'm being a little bit paranoid here). I'll be going to Malaysia all alone and I don't have friends in MMU Cyberjaya so I'm feeling a little bit scared.

5) Last but not least, I heard that MMU has dress codes, if so what it is?

AND IF THERE IS ANY TIPS YOU GUYS CAN GIVE TO A CLUELESS FIRST YEAR STUDENT? (be it making friends or what to do in class etc)  haha, thank you so much.

Hahahha bandar sunway is minimum 30 mins away from Cyberjaya and you know traffic in sunway is not for human to drive, dont think u can go there often without being stressed

Just dont wear shorts and tank top and u'll be fine bro

I thought there is a memo emailed to all students on this? Trimester 2 is still fully online mode while coming trimester is still under deliberation.

Changing while the trimester is on-going is not ideal as mode of assessment will suddenly be reverted.

I feel like not attending any more online classes. What do I do? Should I just drop all of my classes in CamSys or notify for a leave of absence?

Seniors, what are your advices regarding which specialization to choose in Computer Science, I know people say that it doesn't matter at the end, what is the easiest to score out of game development, data science and software engineering
Thank you so much, really in a dilemma right now!

Still online learning mode for Tri 2, but with few exceptions. New intakes can decide to come to campus or online learning.

At this point it's clear to all of us that MMU is doing this solely for MMU's pocket and does not have the students in mind at all.

Online class during MCO? That's great, well done on MMU's part (although by now everyone's doing it so I guess it's nothing special)
Extend online class when MOHE didn't give any instructions for reopening? Sure.
Extend online class after MOHE announce reopening date, since it will be troublesome for students to move in halfway during the semester? Sure makes sense.
Extend online class until March 2021 when many universities are already starting their physical classes next month? We all know what's going on.

I am not sure how is the financial status of the university, but I'm guessing it's not good especially after the hike in student activity fees stunt they pulled not long ago. This MCO just gave them an opportunity to finally earn more money and it's a perfect time for them since the students can't protest this time icon_idea.gif . Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not 100% sure how they are benefiting from this, but I'm guessing they are saving a lot of money in facilities, and now they don't have to spend extra money on facilities needed to enforce/implement SOP when students are back in full.

As for the willingness for students to come back to campus, if I'm not mistaken the university conducted a survey regarding the students' readiness to return to campus, why didn't the university publish the result alongside with the announcement of extension of online classes?

Some may argue that we are mostly doing IT or multimedia related course so there is no need for us to be there in person to perform properly, but what about the soft skills and every other skills we need when we start our work life? Yes asking questions in Google Meet is way easier that asking in a lecture hall with hundreds of eyes looking at you, but when we enter work life, are we going to text the boss during a meeting to ask questions? If MMU were to proceed with the plan to extend online class until March 2021, that's 1 year of our student life gone, 33% of our degree course. 1 whole year of opportunity to learn something new lost.

Above is just one of the problem associated with online class. Depression issue, team collaboration, communication with staffs/lecturers/peers and many more which MMU should take into consideration.

To sum it all up, I believe MMU owe us at least an explanation as of why we can't yet return to campus despite the government already announced that physical classes can be started. The only explanation given was "after considering views from all aspects" which we can all agree that is not enough.

PS Despite everything I said above I personally don't actually mind having online class. Attending lectures on my bed, having my lunch infront of pc, is a privilege I don't mind keeping. If given a choice I would choose to continue with the online learning, but I'm saying this for others who actually prefer or need the physical classes to happen.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I am not privy to the details on the extension of online classes but I believe SRC should have more details. But let me clarify certain matters. On the student activity fees, the initial amount of RM500 is charged for many many years and if you have the comparison data with the fee charged by other university, you will see that it is a fair hike. I am not talking about those expensive universities with well built campus, but those comparable. Bear in mind, in MMU we have a lot of facilities that these IPTS do not have. I know management has that data but I am just not sure why it was not shared to the students, leading to all this complaints.

As for the facilities, money are still spent on the campus as staffs are working and there are facilities that need to be maintained 24/7. Only the classrooms are not used. The management regularly share the utility bills and I can say that whatever amount saved maybe just barely offset (or maybe not even offset) the cost that MMU has invested to enable the online teaching, for example platform subscriptions, training and workshops, new laptops for lecturers, drawing tablets and so on. So perhaps you will be more generous with your comment after knowing all this smile.gif

I agree with your point on issues that may crop up related to online teaching and learning. On the plus side, I can tell you that students gain in several items too, for example, students been actively using social messengers to communicate with the lecturers regardless of the time instead of having to go to the lecturer's office usually. Some students will take a longer time to adjust, some lesser. Yea, 1 year student life is gone but remember we are still in this pandemic situation. I have personally talked to students and parents alike. With the few responses that I get, from students side, they are 50-50, but parents majority do not want their kids to be exposed should they return to school. On depression and so on, we do have academic advisors and counselor to provide assistance. Thanks for sharing your comments, from students point of view.
