UK's £1.2bn bill for drone that's seen 146 hours of active duty

user posted image

QUOTE
Unlike other drone models such as Reaper, which operate by satellite, Watchkeeper is piloted by radio signals and requires troops on the ground in order to function. A defence spokesman explained that this allows it to be used more directly by commanders to survey the battlefield.

Watchkeeper has not been used in the RAF-led air missions in Libya and Iraq, or in Syria, where Reapers are providing a third of all surveillance flights to the US-led coalition.

Commenting on the remotely piloted aircraft’s reliance on radio, Chris Woods, the author of Sudden Justice, a book on drones, said: “The problem with Watchkeeper is it’s yesterday’s technology pretending to be tomorrow’s.”

Woods also pointed to the fact that they had not been used in the UK’s most recent operations abroad. “The government is spending £1.2bn on an asset that is not being used in the kinds of aerial-led wars we’re now fighting.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted that even hitting the 2017 target to be fully operational “will require considerable further development”. Another problem is the lack of trained pilots: currently the army only has six, but it expects this to rise to 100 when the drone is fully operational.

Remote-Controlled Weapon Towers Could Be The Future Of Military Base Security

user posted image

The Army is currently testing remote-controlled weapon towers dotted along the perimeter of a base at Fort Bliss, Texas, in an effort to utilize soldiers’ time better and keep them safer.

Known as Tower Hawk Systems, the revolutionary security technology lets soldiers control weapon towers via remote control, all while safely protected behind the walls of the military base, Fox News reported.

Currently, between four to six military personnel are required to man security towers at military bases, according to Gizmag. But this duty just might become a thing of the past.

“Every soldier I have assigned to securing the perimeter is one I don’t have that can execute support missions,” Lt. Col. Raphael Heflin told Fox News. (RELATED: Cutting-Edge Robotic Dog Sent To Marine Corps For Basic Training)

Fort Bliss is testing towers mounted with Browning M-250-caliber machine guns and 338 Lapua sniper rifles, but according to reports, almost any type of gun can be mounted and controlled remotely.

Software called Joint All Hazard Command Control System allows soldiers to move the weapons up, down and in 360-degree circles from the tactical operations center within the base. What’s even cooler is the software can allegedly pick out enemies without help from the soldiers manning the system, and will track the combatants until directed to take further action.

Instead of four to six men physically manning the perimeter, this new system only needs two military personnel. These two soldiers virtually man the center behind two massive computer screens streaming normal, thermal, and infrared vision scanning the perimeter, and use controls just like the ones for gaming consoles — giving soldiers a user-friendly familiarity.

The U.S. Army is currently in the throes of testing a slew of cutting-edge tech — including the towers — in a program called Network Integration Evaluation 16.1. From Sept. 25 to Oct. 8, 9,000 military members will be testing tech, software and more efficient energy systems, in the hopes of utilizing some or all of the gadgets.

Russian Air Force decimating terrorist command centers, bunkers, camps, workshops – Defense Ministry

user posted image

QUOTE
“A bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb dropped from a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber near Raqqa has eliminated the command post of one of the terror groups, together with an underground storage facility for explosives and munitions,” the spokesman said.

Commenting on the video filmed by a Russian UAV monitoring the assault near Raqqa, Konashenkov noted, “a powerful explosion inside the bunker indicates it was also used for storing a large quantity of munitions.

“As you can see, a direct hit on the installation resulted in the detonation of explosives and multiple fires. It was completely demolished,” the spokesman said.

PressTV-Iran unveils submersible military craft

user posted image

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has unveiled a torpedo-armed watercraft which is capable of operating both on and under water.

The domestically-manufactured submersible watercraft, dubbed Zolfaqar, was showcased for the first time at a public exhibition on Saturday, Fars news agency reports.

The 17-meter-long military equipment weighs about 22 tonnes and has a speed of 40 knots (more than 70 kilometers) per hour on the sea surface.

In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, particularly its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

Just one day after accusing Russia of bombing civilians in Syria, US planes bomb a hospital in Afghanistan

user posted image

Early this (saturday) morning, in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the U.S. dropped bombs on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)). The MSF reported that to date, the airstrike killed at least 16 people including 9 of the hospital’s medical staff, and seriously injured dozens of patients. “Among the dead was the Afghan head of the hospital, Abdul Sattar,” reported The New York Times.

Jason Cone, MSF’s Executive Director, said the medical charity “condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific bombing of its hospital in Kunduz full of staff and patients.” He added that “all parties [to the] conflict, including in Kabul & Washington, were clearly informed of precise GPS Coordinates of MSF facilities in Kunduz.”

For its part, the U.S. military in Afghanistan issued a statement acknowledging that it carried out airstrikes, claimed they were conducted “against individuals threatening the force,” and conceded that “the strike may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility.”

New Navy chief says submarines still necessary

The Nation October 1, 2015 2:15 pm

Newly-appointed Navy Commander-in-Chief Adm Na Areekij said Thursday that submarines are still needed by the Navy to protect Thailand's sea territory.

But Na admitted that the procurement would have to be indefinitely postponed due to limited budget as the govrnment would need the money to help all sectors, especially low-income people.

Additional 380 UN peacekeepers to undergo training in Port Dickson

user posted image

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has expressed his ministry’s full commitment for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pledge to support United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations.

He said there were currently 920 personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces in missions abroad.

The additional personnel promised by Najib would further help countries that were in conflict.

Najib last week announced the deployment of 380 additional police personnel to the UN peacekeeping mission who would serve as part of the Formed Police Units and the United Nations Police.

He made the announcement when speaking at the UN Peacekeeping Summit.

Hishammuddin said that these additional personnel would undergo the necessary training needed at the Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre (MPC) in Port Dickson, which has trained many officers to date.

“The additional deployment of our troops is a sign of Malaysia’s commitment as a member of the United Nations to help countries torn by conflict to create the conditions for lasting peace.

“The MPC in Port Dickson provides armed forces personnel, together with police, civil departments and non-governmental organisations, with training and knowledge to enable them to function in peacekeeping operations, preparing them for operational duties in peacekeeping operations.

“The centre, which has trained 1,931 local officers and 612 international participants from 52 countries, is testament to Malaysia’s continuous commitment towards global peace, which is the cornerstone to our National Defence Policy,” he said in a statement today.

Hishammuddin also expressed excitement over the recognition received for Malaysia’s efforts in adopting the concept paper on Asean Militaries Ready Group on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.

He said the Ready Group would serve as a force that comprised of specialists in disaster relief and military medicine from all Asean countries grouped under a single banner.

“This force would be trained together, develop common procedures and interoperability.

“In the event of a calamity, upon request by the host country, this force would be immediately despatched, taking the lead from a coordination centre.”

Aboard U.S. nuclear sub, a cat-and-mouse game with phantom Chinese foes

user posted image

QUOTE
America’s most advanced nuclear submarine was slicing through the water off Hawaii last month, 400 feet under the surface, when a sonar operator suddenly detected an ominous noise on his headphones.

It was a faint thump … thump … thump – the distinctive sound of a spinning, seven-bladed propeller on a Chinese attack submarine called a Shang by the Pentagon and its allies.

A neon green stripe on his sonar screen indicated that the Shang was only a few thousand yards off the U.S. sub’s bow.

“Sonar contact!” he yelled to 15 officers and crew in the dimly lighted control room. “All stations, analyze!”

Within seconds, the 377-foot-long Mississippi banked right and gunned its nuclear-powered propulsion system for one of the Navy’s most difficult maneuvers: sneaking up behind another submarine and shadowing it without being detected.

Fortunately, the Mississippi was chasing a phantom, not a real Chinese sub. A digital recording of a Shang’s audio signature had been piped through the U.S. sub’s sonar system for a training exercise.

But the battle drill seemed urgently real: The mock Shang’s course and speed were automatically fed into the Mississippi’s targeting computers, the first step to launching one of its 27 torpedoes, something no U.S. sub has done against an adversary since World War II.

Flying IEDs: The Next Evolution in Warfare?

user posted image

QUOTE
Martinez said even a small drone such as the quadcopter that landed near the White House poses a high potential threat level. “Imagine the media event if it lands on top of the White House and detonates, whether it kills anyone or not,” Martinez said. Martinez emphasized that the seemingly harmless light vehicles could carry a payload of up to six pounds of C4 plastic explosive or multiple fragmentation grenades, giving them the ability to do considerable damage for a small platform. Such an attack could provide a propaganda coup for a terrorist organization by instilling uneasiness in the civilian population even if it inflicted no human casualties.

There is significant concern within the defense community that forces unfriendly to the United States can easily acquire these types of flying vehicles. The small drones are readily available and it is highly probable that existing technology would allow unfriendly forces to retrofit them, giving the aircraft the ability to deliver weaponized explosives or hazardous materials.
