Notorious Russian Separatist Commander Spotted In Syria

user posted image

According to multiple sources, the Russian separatist “Commander Motorola” whose real name is Arseny Pavlov, has been reportedly spotted leading Russian forces in Syria.

Motorola, a Russian citizen, rose to infamy as a successful separatist commander of the “Sparta” battalion during Russia’s proxy siege in eastern Ukraine. It was said that he was a former soldier that was arrested for drunk driving, and volunteered to fight to avoid jail time.

Commander Motorola is wanted for war crimes by the Ukrainian government for allegedly personally executing Ukrainian troops.

He had a high-profile celebrity-esque wedding during his time with the Sparta battalion, and was made popular on Funker530 for his extreme grenade launcher prank, in which he sent dozens of high explosive grenades on to one of his own outposts as a practical joke.

US deploys more advanced aircraft carrier to boost ties with Japan

One of the U.S. Navy's most advanced aircraft carriers docked in Japan on Thursday at the start of a deployment that will strengthen the capability of the Seventh Fleet in Asia and boost ties between the United States and its closest regional ally.

YOKOSUKA, Japan: One of the U.S. Navy's most advanced aircraft carriers docked in Japan on Thursday at the start of a deployment that will strengthen the capability of the Seventh Fleet in Asia and boost ties between the United States and its closest regional ally.

With a crew of 5,000 sailors and a compliment of around 80 aircraft, USS Ronald Reagan is equipped with the latest targeting and defence radars, integrated weapons systems and command and communications technology.

The USS Ronald Reagan's deployment marks an upgrade, as the USS George Washington, the carrier it has replaced in Japan, had less advanced systems and technology.

"Just like a new car we have the latest and greatest, we have GPS, we have the back up mirror so we can see what is behind us," Captain Chris Bolt, the carrier's commander, told a separate press briefing on the dock at Yokosuka naval base.

"We have some tremendous command and control capabilities."

In a tilt towards Asia, the United States is rebalancing its forces, deploying 60 percent of its navy to the region, including its most advanced vessels.

Last month, in a retreat from 70 years of state pacifism, Japanese lawmakers approved legislation that would enable Japan's military to fight overseas for the first time since World War Two.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pursuing a doctrine of collective self defence with allies meant to give his nation a bigger role in regional security in order to counterbalance the military power of an increasingly assertive China.

The changes enacted last month are expected to lead to enhanced cooperation between the Japanese and U.S navies.

"We have many, many exercises that we do, we are very inter-operable because of our equipment and our training. So, we think that these new measures will deepen that, will strengthen that, and will make us better together," Ray Mabus, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, told a press briefing in Yokohama.

US military 'golden hour' rule saved lives

user posted image

A mandate to get wounded U.S. soldiers to appropriate medical care within one hour of injury improved survival on the battlefield, according to a new study.

(Reuters Health) - A mandate to get wounded U.S. soldiers to appropriate medical care within one hour of injury improved survival on the battlefield, according to a new study.

The 2009 rule, implemented by then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, potentially saved 359 lives, according to the report in JAMA Surgery.

"I think the Secretary of Defense's mandate made a difference," said Dr. Russ Kotwal, the study's lead author from the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Joint Base San Antonio-Ft. Sam Houston.

He and his colleagues write that the 60-minute mandate, which is widely known as the "golden hour," cut in half the previous goal of two hours between a call for prehospital helicopter transport and arrival at a treatment facility.

For the study, the researchers used data on 21,089 soldiers wounded in Afghanistan from September 2001 through March 2014.

After the mandate, the average transport time decreased from 90 minutes to 43 minutes - based on patients with the most complete data. Also, the percentage of missions achieving transport within the "golden hour" increased from about 25 percent to 75 percent.

Overall, 16 percent of those wounded before the mandate were killed in action, compared to about 10 percent after the mandate.

When the researchers included wounded soldiers who survived past the battlefield, the fatality rate was about 14 percent before the mandate and about 8 percent after.

The percentage of soldiers who died after reaching a treatment facility remained consistent, at about 4 percent before and after the mandate.

In an editorial accompanying the new study, Dr. Todd Rasmussen cautioned that it's important to remember that these results were in an "optimal theater of war" with air access and surgical facilities.

"Future casualty care scenarios may be frighteningly more complex and involve delayed resuscitation, prolonged field care, and longer-distance critical care transport," wrote Rasmussen, of the U.S. Combat Casualty Care Research Program at Fort Detrick in Maryland.

The new study also has practical implications for the general U.S. population, Kotwal said.

For example, in remote areas of the U.S. the new study shows it's important to improve evacuation times for trauma patients or to push out enhanced medical capabilities to first responders.

"The 'golden hour' is not about getting people to a hospital," Kotwal said. "It’s about getting them the care that’s required."

Rasmussen added in his editorial that military and civilian planners should learn from the "golden hour" effort - including its limitations, such as the difficulty of acquiring the data to do these types of analyses.

Russia enters Syria war with air strikes

user posted image

Russia launched air strikes in war-torn Syria on Wednesday, its first military engagement outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.

MOSCOW: Russia launched air strikes in war-torn Syria on Wednesday (Sep 30), its first military engagement outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.

Russian warplanes carried out strikes in several provinces along with Syrian government aircraft as President Vladimir Putin seeks to steal US President Barack Obama's thunder by pushing a rival plan to defeat the Islamic State group in Syria.

Both Moscow and Damascus presented the operation as targeting IS militants, with a Syrian security source saying "terrorist positions" were hit in Hama and Homs provinces, and that Russia aided government air strikes in Latakia province, the regime's stronghold.

But the United States said it believed Russia had targeted the opposition rebels threatening Syria's embattled leader Bashar al-Assad - not IS as claimed.

A US defence official in Washington briefed journalists that: "We have not seen any strikes against ISIL, what we have seen is strikes against (the) Syrian opposition."

Defence Secretary Ash Carter was more cautious, saying: "It does appear they were in areas where there were probably not ISIL forces." But he blasted Russia's arrival in the bloody civil war, saying it only served to prolong the conflict and would "backfire."

France - which on Sunday launched its first air strike against IS in Syria - also raised doubts over Russia's objectives, echoing concerns that Moscow's military build-up in the country aims simply to keep Assad in power.

Thirty-six civilians

The Russian defence ministry said it carried out 20 flights, and hit eight IS targets.

One bombing run killed 36 civilians - including five children - in central Homs province, the head of Syria's main opposition group told AFP. "The Russians struck northern Homs today and killed 36 innocent people ... who fought against extremism," said Khaled Khoja, head of the National Coalition.

Western powers consider Assad's military responsible for the vast majority of the 240,000 deaths in the four-year war, and say his presence makes a political settlement impossible. France this week launched a probe into Assad's regime for crimes against humanity.

Russia meanwhile is pushing for foreign countries to join an intelligence task force Moscow is setting up with Iran, Iraq and Syria, arguing that supporting the Syrian government is the only way to defeat IS.

Putin, who obtained parliamentary permission to use force abroad just hours before the strikes, warned that Moscow would hunt down IS militants before they target Russia.

The Russian leader pledged his country would not get sucked into a protracted military campaign. His chief of staff Sergei Ivanov said the operation would be limited in duration and ruled out ground operations by Russian troops.

He also said that Assad should be ready for compromise with the opposition, "for the sake of his country and his people."

Russia's next move, later Wednesday, will be to present a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council on countering terrorism and fighting IS.

'Russian strikes not helpful'

Washington was given advance warning of the Russian strikes - in line with an agreement to "deconflict" the situation in Syria, which means working to ensure coalition and Russian planes do not inadvertently cross paths.

However Russia only gave an hour's warning and did not specify where the strikes would occur, riling many in the Pentagon who had been hoping for clearer lines of communication.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed consternation. "I'm especially concerned because there has been no real effort by the Russian side to deconflict the Russian air strikes in Syria," he said.

Putin wants to muscle his way back onto the world stage after months of Western isolation following Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine and support for a separatist insurgency in the east of the ex-Soviet country.

But Washington is worried Moscow's support for its Soviet-era ally may complicate the US-led coalition's fight against IS extremists. Secretary of State John Kerry told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Moscow's move "is not helpful to that effort", a senior US official said.

Differences with the West

Russia's powerful Orthodox Church voiced support for Moscow's air strikes, calling it a "holy battle".

But many in Russia accused the Kremlin of short-sightedness. Alexander Konovalov, head of the Strategic Analysis Institute, said Russia was guided by a desire to end its diplomatic isolation and may not fully realise the long-term consequences of a military involvement in the Middle East.

"We were going to Afghanistan for six months and stayed there for 10 years," he told AFP, referring to a conflict that killed over 14,000 Soviet troops between 1979 and 1989.

Sixty-nine per cent of Russians are against Moscow's deployment of troops in Syria, with just 14 per cent in favour, according to a recent poll by the Levada Centre.

Wednesday's news set social networks alight, with many commentators predicting dire consequences for Russians. "Hide your sons," one Russian, Zaira Abdullaeva, wrote on Facebook.

Putin’s Jets In Syria Are Threat To U.S.

user posted image

QUOTE
Seemingly out of nowhere on September 21, they appeared at an air base in Latakia, a regime stronghold in western Syria—28 of the Russian air force’s best warplanes, including four Su-30 fighters and a number of Su-25 attack planes and Su-24 bombers.

Soon six more Su-34 bombers and at least one Il-20 spy plane followed, part of a contingent of Russia forces reportedly including some 500 troops plus armored vehicles and SA-15 and SA-22 surface-to-air missiles.

For U.S. and allied officials observing the deployment, there has been plenty of cause for confusion…and alarm. It’s not just that, more than four years into Syria’s bloody civil war, Russia has decided to jump in and make things more complicated.

No, it’s what kinds of weapons—planes and missiles, especially—Moscow decided to send, and what those weapons say about the Kremlin’s ultimate plan in Syria. Many of them don’t seem to be well-suited to fighting ISIS. They’re built to battle adversaries like the United States.

US Military Displays New Vehicle And It’s Absolutely Amazing

user posted image

The United States’ military has displayed its latest combat vehicle and it’s awesome.

The Amphibious Combat Vehicle is was designed by Lockheed Martin to replace the Marine Corps’ aging amphibious vehicles. The ACV has eight wheels, a six-cylinder turbodiesel engine, and weighs about 20 tons according to Live Science. Lockheed Martin was able to make the 20 ton ACV able to float by designing it so it displaced as much water as it weighed. This allows the ACV to travel through rough water ways and terrain including stormy weather in the ocean. (RELATED: Report Argues That The F-35 Is Totally Inferior To Foreign Fighters)

Lockheed Martin says the ACV can carry up to 15 people with a max speed of 60 mph. The specifications on the Lockheed Martin website also say the ACV can be armed with up to a 30 millimeter cannon. According to David Hunn, the senior fellow and technical director working on Lockheed Martin’s ACV program, all that is required to switch between land and water is the touch of a button saying, “We’re trying to make this where the driver doesn’t have to make a lot of decisions under high pressure. When you hit the dashboard button that says ‘swim,’ everything changes automatically. The wheel works like a regular steering wheel, but it’s now attached to the swim system.”

The design of the ACV hull also always the vehicle to be more blast resistant than a more traditional design. (RELATED: Defense Firm Looks To Resurrect Old Concept: Tank Boats)

There is no specified dates for when people might see the ACV in action, but Hull expects that it could soon be used for rescue missions during disasters such as hurricanes or tsunamis.

Images Suggest China Is Building 1st Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

HONG KONG — New satellite images suggest China has begun work on its first indigenous aircraft carrier, according to a monitoring group.

Photos released Thursday by IHS Jane's Defence Weekly appear to show what they described as an "unidentified hull in an advanced state of construction" in the northeastern city of Dalian.

While the publication stopped short of definitively stating that project was a new aircraft carrier, it noted that "the slow pace of assembly and outline suggests a military hull under construction."

user posted image

It also noted that the Dalian city dry dock where the keel had been laid was the sight of major refitting and repair of China's first aircraft carrier — Liaoning — before it entered service in September 2012.

The Liaoning, a Soviet-era Kuznetsov-class carrier purchased from Ukraine in 1998, has served as a training ship for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), which is in the process of learning how to operate and integrate carrier-based activities into its operations.

Speculation over China's military build-up in the disputed South China Sea has created diplomatic tension in the region, where several nations including Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia lay claim to the islands.

Last month, IHS Jane's reported that China had completed construction of a two-mile runway on reclaimed land in the area.

Little is known about China's carrier plans and ambitions, but in recent years it has developed fighter aircraft such as the Shenyang J-15.

The Pentagon's 2015 White Paper on China's military capabilities also noted that Beijing "continued to pursue an indigenous aircraft carrier program and could build multiple aircraft carriers over the next 15 years."

TAIPING, Malaysia – Soldiers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, “Wolfhounds,” 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division and the 9th Royal Ranger Regiment, Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) stood together for the closing ceremony of Keris Strike 2015, here, on Sept. 22, 2015.

“Keris Strike was a superb team effort that greatly advanced our mutual goals of building capability and improving military readiness for both countries,” said Maj. Gen. Gary Hara, deputy-commanding general, Unites States Army Pacific Command.

During the exercise, the two military forces underwent several combined academic exercises emphasizing techniques and tactics for a jungle environment, patrol base activities along with jungle survival training, culminating with a Field Training Exercise (FTX) in the jungle of Malaysia.

“This [FTX] has been incredible training, we were able to get out into the real deep jungle with a lot of terrain and survive out there for about five days,” said Kevin Williams, commander, 2-27 Inf. Regt., 3rd BCT, 25th ID.

The commander continued to say that he is proud of what his Soldiers have accomplished while representing the United Sates Army and the 25th Infantry Division with the high discipline and standards they have displayed.

As the Wolfhounds were training in Taiping, a staff element of 3rd BCT, 25th ID along with soldiers of 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Malaysian Armed Forces, conducted a command post exercise (CPX) in the city of Ipoh.

The CPX was a simulated humanitarian aid mission that made the two countries work together by sharing each other’s organizational tactics, techniques and procedures in a challenging environment.

Maj. Gen. Gary Hara, deputy-commanding general, United States Army Pacific Command, removes an armband from the commander of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Malaysian Armed Forces, signifying the end of the exercise

The exercise was designed to enhance the professional relationships, improved bilateral readiness, co-operation and interoperability between the Malaysian and U.S. forces.

“Working together on these complex missions and improving interoperability prepares us to respond effectively together in any capacity in the future,” said Hara.

Keris Strike 2015 was the third and final exercise of the Pacific Pathways mission that took these Soldiers to three countries to train along side three different military forces in diverse environments.

Shen Diao drone could track and guide missiles to US warships

user posted image

Shen Diao, China's new unmanned aerial vehicle also known as the Divine Eagle, could be used to track the location of US aircraft carriers in the Western Pacific and guide DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missiles to their target, according to overseas Chinese news outlet Duowei News.

Shenyang Aircraft Corp and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group are currently developing two larger versions of unmanned aerial vehicles with sizes comparable to the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk of the United States. The drones' primary utility will be carrying out reconnaissance missions in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Shen Diao and the Sky Wing III, designed respectively by Shenyang Aircraft Corp and Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, are both rumored to be capable of tracking large US warships in waters extending from Alaska to the Philippines.

With the assistance of Sky Wing III and Shen Diao, the Second Artillery Corps, the PLA's strategic missile force, will be capable of launching increasingly precise attacks against US warships with its DF-21D missile. The Shen Diao can additionally serve as an early warning aircraft for the PLA Air Force, as it is equipped with a larger radar than the Sky Wing III.

China is currently unable to produce manned early warning aircraft in large numbers as it has not come close to the production capacity for passenger aircraft of the United States. It would neither be advisable to redesign its strategic bomber, the H-6, into a early warning aircraft. This leaves the Shen Diao as China's best fit for the role.

The drones will not enter service until 2020 at the earliest, since their manufacturers have only designed a single prototype for each of the unmanned aerial vehicles, the report said.

Russian Airstrikes in Syria Targeted 'NATO Created Mercenaries'

user posted image

QUOTE
of all it is important to underline the fact that all these terrorist organizations are supported by US intelligence. In fact the mainstream media now has acknowledged that these rebels are supported by the CIA. The Wall Street Journal says Russian airstrikes in Syria targeted CIA-backed rebels.”

“These rebels are terrorists including the al-Nusra Front. What I think is at stake here is that the Russian air force is now waging targeted attacks directed against al-Nusra in coordination with the Syrian government and what the US is saying is that in a way Russia is going after America’s good-guy terrorists rather than the bad-guy terrorist. They are making a distinction between ISIL and other terrorist organizations, all of which are covertly supported by the US,” Chossudovsky told Sputnik.

He went on to say that Russia is targeting the foot soldiers of the western military alliance, “Basically the mercenaries that have been recruited right from the beginning by NATO, the Turkish High Command with the complicity of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel.”

Chossudovsky reminded that in early 2012 Washington categorized al-Nusra as a terrorist organization but now it is supporting al-Nusra front officially.

“Western media is contradicting itself but it is also acknowledging candidly that the CIA is supporting the al-Qaeda affiliated groups inside Syria.”
