In Remembrance: Tan Sri Yuen Yet Leng
user posted image
KUALA LUMPUR: Police officer extraordinaire Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng who played an instrumental role in the historic 1989 Haadyai Peace Accord that witnessed the end of communist insurgency in Malaysia, passed away Thursday, due to heart failure.

He was 88 years old.

The former Special Branch officer who spent most of his life being hunted down by the communists during and after the Emergency years, was also the former Sarawak Commissioner of Police from 1981 till his retirement in 1984 and Perak Chief Police Officer in 1975.

His widow, Puan Sri Linda Yuen, 68, when contacted by Bernama said Yuen who had been unwell for the past few days after being discharged from hospital, breathed his last at their daughter’s residence at The Mines, Seri Kembangan.

She said Yuen’s remains would be sent to the Xiao En Centre at Cheras for the vigil service beginning this evening.

Born in Larut Matang, Perak, Yuen joined the police force in 1950 at the age of 23, and spent most his career as a special branch officer combating the communist resurgency in the country.

He is best known for his role as one of the key negotiators in the historic ‘Rundingan Damai Haadyai’ where together with former Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Rahim Noor went to China to meet Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leaders Chin Peng, Abdullah C.D and Rashid Maidin.

Their meeting successfully led to the signing of a peace treaty between the communists and the Malaysian and Thai governments in Haadyai, Thailand on Dec 2, 1989, where the communists agreed to lay down arms and disband the CPM, bringing to an end insurgency activities in the country after almost 50 years.

During his illustrious 34 years’ career as a police officer, Yuen had also served as special branch deputy director at the Kuala Lumpur Police headquarters, and was later promoted as Perak Chief Police Officer.

He also wrote two books, ‘Operasi Ginger’ in 1998 and ‘Nation Before Self’ in 2008.

Yuen also left behind two daughters and two grandchildren. – Bernama

Attracted by huge deployment bonuses, Russian military personnel scramble to volunteer for action in Syria

user posted image

As Russia begins its military operations in Syria against militants, there has been a scramble of military personnel registering to volunteer for overseas deployment in Syria.

Russian media stress that only professional ('contract') soldiers have been sent to Syria, not conscripts. However, the force strength and units have not been revealed. Western experts believe, to date, Russia has around 1,500 personnel in Syria, mainly from the Air Force.

According to the daily Vedomosti, there will be no shortage of soldiers willing to go there, to earn bonus pay. Officers are being paid an extra $62 USD (RUB 4,073) per day, while lower ranks $43 USD (RUB 2,082) per day in addition to their normal pay, it reported, quoting Valentina Melnikova, head of the Soldiers' Mothers group.

Since the rouble's slump in value, that kind of bonus - paid in roubles - means a lot more purchasing power in Russia.

High costs may delay Thai navy's submarine plan

Bangkok, Oct 1  IANS 17 hours ago

Thailand navy's 36 billion baht (about USD 988 million) plan to purchase three submarines from China may have to be delayed or even reviewed, navy chief Admiral Na Areenij said on Thursday.

The new navy chief insisted that submarines are a necessary capability. However, he understood that the economy is in a downturn with many limitations placed on the government in meeting the needs of people in every sector, the Bangkok Post reported.

This could affect the navy's bid for a submarine fleet, he said.

"We have to build opportunity from crisis. The navy will look to improving its knowledge, expertise and tactics. We have to increase the capability of our units under budget constraints. We may run short of funds, but we still can make improvements," Adm Na said.

"During my two years as navy chief, I will try to make the navy a place of learning and knowledge," he added.

Adm Na said if the submarines purchase plan was stalled, the navy would have an alternative to propose, but declined to elaborate, saying he is yet to discuss it with Prawit Wongsuwon, the deputy prime minister and defence minister.

The navy had submitted a proposal to acquire the submarines to the defence ministry, to be forwarded to the cabinet for consideration.

However, the proposal is still with the ministry at this stage, he said.

Second A400M To Be Delivered In December - RMAF Chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) chief, General Tan Sri Roslan Saad said the second Airbus A400M will be received in early December.

"This is the second of four aircraft bought in December 2005. The first was received on March 9. The A400M is a modern aircraft compared to the DHC-4 Coribou which we already have.

"RMAF pilots can still fly the aircraft despite the modern technology," he told reporters after his induction as fifth member of the Hall of Fame at Armed Forces Defence College (MPAT) here, today.

The A400M has a longer operating range and capable of transporting a higher volume of cargo compared to other aircraft in the RMAF stable.

Other than for defence purposes, it can also perform Medical Evacuation (Medevac) Air to Air Refuelling (AAR), Aerial Delivery (Paratroop & Logistic) and Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

Roslan said the remaining two aircraft are expected to arrive in stages in the middle of next year.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest award for MPAT alumni holding the highest office in military service.

The other inductees were Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) chief, General Tan Sri Zulkifli Mohd Zin, former RMAF chief, General Tan Sri Rodzali Daud, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general, Admiral Datuk Mohd Amdan Kurish and Army chief, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor.

ARUSHA, Tanzania, Oct.1 (Xinhua) -- Two soldiers with the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF) died after a military plane crashed in the Indian Ocean on Thursday morning.

TPDF confirmed the incident saying the plane which was used for training crashed at around 9:30 a.m. local time and had two pilots who were Lieutenant Colonel Talkisiyo Bruno Ndongoro and Captain Gaudence Peter Hamis.

According to a statement issued by TPDF's communication unit, the two pilots lost the direction when they were coming from Silver Sand area of Bundya Island on the north-eastern coast of Dar es Salaam city.

TPDF said the source of the accident is engine fault and when the pilots discovered the problem it was too late to get out of the plane.

"Worse enough, the plane submerged into the ocean and the TPDF soldiers were on site to search for the bodies of dead pilots using military boats," the force said in statement, without divulging detailed information on the type of the plane that involved in the accident.

Chinese police arrest more than 1,000 PLA veterans protesting their lack of government assistance benefits

user posted image

Authorities in the Chinese capital on Monday detained more than 1,000 veterans of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) who gathered outside government buildings in protest over lack of government assistance and income, protesters said.

Yang Suiquan,a PLA veteran and protester said the veterans had arrived in Beijing on June 23, in the hope of lodging a formal complaint, and had been promised a reply within a 60-day time limit.

"But there has been no reply to date, and nobody was doing anything about it, so we went back there again," he said.

Many veterans of China's brief 1979 border war with Vietnam and the Korean War (1950-1953), live in extreme hardship in old age, he said.

"We gave our best, but when we got back, they didn't do anything to help us earn a living, find work, get medical care or social security payments," Yang said. "The local governments say they can't do anything, but maybe they just don't want to."

"We have been forced into petitioning, into pressing our demands," he said. "There are a lot of veterans who have fought in wars that have been put in jail by the authorities, "The government's way of dealing with this issue is pretty defective."

"I think the authorities should find a way to ensure their standard of living ... or else it's going to have a big impact on applications to join the Chinese armed forces in the present," he said.

US, Russia hold military talks to avoid mishaps in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
US military officials were furious Wednesday after Russia gave them only an hour's vague "heads-up" that warplanes would begin bombing. The warning didn't specify when or where the strikes would occur, only that coalition planes should avoid the area.

QUOTE
US officials stress that Russia needs to tell them about their military flight plans over Syria. In military jargon, such talks to avoid interference is known as "deconfliction."

Ukraine-Russia Conflict 2015: US To Send Radar Technology To Ukrainian Military

user posted image

QUOTE
The equipment to be provided by the U.S. will be Q36 radar systems that can target the point of origin of missiles from between 18-24 kilometers (11-15 miles) away. The equipment is so precise that it can originate the location of a missile or artillery weapon after a single shot.

Nearly 75 percent of the fatalities experienced on the Ukrainian side, according Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, have been because of artillery or missile attacks, and the new radar equipment could be a game changer for the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian military was attacked by pro-Russian separatists in the Donbass region Wednesday, the Kyiv Post reported. No fatalities have been reported from Wednesday's attack.

Military Grounds Lightweight F-35 Pilots Over Ejection Seat Concerns

user posted image

QUOTE
concerns over pilot safety during low-speed ejections from the F-35, the military has temporarily restricted pilots who weigh less than 136 pounds from flying the aircraft, according to Defense News in an exclusive report. In August, testers found that pilots under a certain weight faced increased risk of neck injury while ejecting at lower speeds. When used by lightweight pilots, the ejection seat rotates slightly, putting the pilot in a compromising position to eject when the parachute opens.

Send in the Chechens: Ramzan Kadyrov Ready to Go to War in Syria

user posted image

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is ready to send his men to Syria to fight Islamic State terrorists there, Russian media reported Friday.

“In 1999 when Chechnya was in the hands of these devils, I, as a Muslim, a Chechen and a patriot of Russia, vowed to devote all my life to fighting [the terrorists] everywhere. I ask for permission for us to go to Syria and take part in these special operations there,” Kadyrov told Russian News Service radio on Friday.

He added that it was up President Putin to decide, but added that Chechen soldiers were ready to join in the fight in Syria.

“The moment the terrorists in Syria realize that [Chechen] soldiers are on the way, they will immediately get out of there,” Kadyrov added.

Iran troops to join Syria war, Russia bombs group trained by CIA

Two Lebanese sources told Reuters hundreds of Iranian troops had reached Syria in the past 10 days with weapons to mount a major ground offensive. They would also be backed by Assad’s Lebanese Hezbollah allies and by Shi’ite militia fighters from Iraq, while Russia would provide air support.

“The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria –soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisers … we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more,” one of the sources said.

Let's All Take a Nice Deep Breath Over Russia's Airstrikes in Syria

Do you know how many military bases the US has in the Middle East? Nearly two dozen. Plus the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf. Plus a whole bunch of close allies. And we're supposed to be quaking in our boots because Putin hastily upgraded a single aging base in Latakia under pressure from his sole remaining ally? You're kidding, right?
