Well, interestingly Kuching TGV is pricing the Imax at RM17, same price as normal hall tickets! I think many people don't know this!

Hey thats good, i paid 61 bucks for a couple seat which i shared with my dad.

The thing about imax is best to sit middle, or just slightly above middle row.

Where is the best seat?

I tried the cheapo standard front rows(first half of the theater) and the experience really suck because too front.

Today I will try the Premium seats (second half of the theater). So should I select the mid-row of the Premium seats ?

Now we know Sparse Nolan is just as good as Plotty Nolan. That is, not very good. This is a war film that feels at once large in scope and yet small in scale, intimate and yet distant (and not in a good way). A very sterile war picture.

And that monotonous drone of Zimmer's score... Damn.

I'm not sure which cinema it is, but usually, for Imax, thats the best position from middle to 2 rows up, or 2 rows bottom from the middle. Just take the middle to be safe.

Based on imax, the floor can be steep.
From this picture you will understand what i saying.

Just watched it last night in imax2d, brought my dad to see it too.

For me, the movie was just.... Too clean.

No Gore, no Grit, not enough action, no sadness, no love..Not enough of everything.
And looks like all the Uniforms, equipment and vehicles just come out of factory the day before...just too clean

Anyway i liked the way Nolan did the timeline between land, water and sea to make it 'connected' and "edge of the seat" feeling and 'mind fuck' effect

Pity, this is nothing like Hacksaw Ridge or any of the top war movies for me.

Better save money and watch normal cinema. Cos except for the air dogfights and choppy sea, i dun see the need for imax.
But the sound directional for superb.

4/10 for me... Pity... .thats why never have high hopes before watching a movie...oklah..I give it 5/10 for the great sound effects

But think about it, yes, history shows the ppl were saved by the small boat ppl, but do you know how many small boats it takes to carry out 300,000 trrops? Lets say 300,000 / 30 per boat..yes, 10,000 boats, ok, lets say 5,000 boats enough oledi, but how many small boats you need in that movie? 10? 15 max? I expected more epic out of it.

great sound effects are part of imax experience. so i do still suggest people to go for imax just for the sound system alone.

Really dug how the manipulation of timelines and creative use of editing magic. It felt refreshing and intense with the race against time mechanics. Plot wise it left me cold. It felt clinical and incomplete from character development.
Those highbrow critics usually lay the criticism of Nolan's work is his technical efficiency overriding his ability to deliver a fully formed film. To an extent I agreed....It's good but doesn't delivered that giddy satisfaction. Whether it's the lack of emotional attachment to the characters or incomplete resolution. Maybe 6 months down the road on second viewing it may change my opinion or not.
No denying MVP of the movie is the Zimmer's score.
By next month Bigelow's Detroit gonna release, so do wonder how will that stack up against Nolan's chance at Oscars.

The ticking as background music...its just constantly there and really make you tense up for the whole movie, especially as the danger approaches the ticking also became more and more intense, and afterwards it went back to normal...

now you thought finally you can relax but all of a sudden the ticking pick up again sweat.gif

I'll just say this looked amazing in IMAX. Sound system was also superb. The gunshots sounded really realistic (some people jumped out of their seat when the first gunshot was fired because it wasn't expected) and the piercing sound of the jet made it feel like its close by.

how to say it? hmm.gif
left the imax hall both satisfied & dissatisfied

yeah, two contradicting emotions there laugh.gif

Satisfied:
from the moment the first shot was fired, it gonna put you to the edge of your seat, the sound effects & quality is one of the best I ever had in a cinema.
Plus the constant suspending score is great as well.
Editing also is superb, let your brain exercise a little bit.
Good air to air dog fights

Dissatisfied:
no emotion roller coaster, little character development, PG13 bloodless war scenes doh.gif
It felt too sterile, too clean
Are we supposed to feel connected to the young chap in the boat? Nope, not connected to him at all even at the end, just feel meh. He felt just like an unnecessary filler.

oh well, if you're looking for an emotional & brutal war story like Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Ridge, skip it, as you'll be disappointed. But nontheless, it's still a very good war movie, a PG13 war movie.

But, the superb sound effects in imax hall with supreme audio quality is already worth the ticket price wink.gif

Nolan tried to pull a fast one using the Spitfire pilot in the end to make ppl feel compassionate when he got captured. Yup, didnt connect at all

Hmm, a bit over-rated in my opinion.

Maybe war movie is never my favourite.

No 'plot'.

No 'heroes'.

No 'Hi, my name is Bob.'

No 'sitting around camp fire talking stories.'

You are THROWN into the event of Dunkirk from the first minute. To the last.

This is the closest anyone of us will get to experience WWII.

Immersive.

And in my opinion, the best depiction of war ever captured on film.

Nolan has delivered a masterpiece.

Watched it in IMAX, and let me assure you, sound editing/mixing, contender for Oscar.

The opening sequence of Tommy running through the narrow streets and then onto the beach.... WOW!

The camera pans from left to right, and the vastness of the beach... you can literally taste it. laugh.gif

I was a little confused with the 'land/sea/air' timing at first.

When I spotted a certain character (again) at a certain scene, I was like .... Ohhhh..... Nolan, why can't you just stick to conventional timing. biggrin.gif

This is how he intended the film to be.

"Let's focus on the event, let's make it a thriller."

With very little characterization, in the end you might not feel for anyone. That could pose a problem if you were rooting for someone.

Also, since there was no real 'plot', you might be left bewildered as to what this event was all about.

I loved the three perspectives. Farrier looks out the cockpit, he sees an overturned vessel.

Moments later, we are on that vessel.

There are so many stunning moments in the film it is hard to pick one.

"Dunkirk" is raw, vicious and downright eerily real in so many ways.

This is truly what movies are meant for.

Putting YOU the audience in the midst of it all.

The music is terrifying, the use of clockwork sounds/ticking and the ramping of the music during key moments, Hans Zimmer has delivered the goods.

Worth watching again? Absolutely. There are no 'Hollywood' effects of planes exploding, there are no over the top explosions, this is as real as it gets. Watching it again will see you truly appreciating the three perspectives IMO.

9.5/10

A MUST WATCH ON 'IMAX'!

"Logan", "War for the Planet of the Apes", "Dunkirk". The best of 2017 thus far.

The closest anyone ever got to war in a film is the Omaha beach sequence in SPR. This has a few sprinkling of scenes almost approaching that -- in particular the feeling of hopelessness when a bomber is flying toward you and you have no where to hide on the beach -- but on a sustained level this is not even close to SPR's infamous sequence.

To me, Nolan tried too hard at combining a minimalist, contemplative piece with war sequences. It tries to be a cross between SPR and Mallick. And fails. It isn't that none of the characters resonate (that's still fine), but each scene feels mechanically distant and impersonal, as of the director was trying so hard not to avoid making a typical direct war movie that it ends up feeling so sterile. Almost like a documentary. Fuck realism if it makes things boring. The dogfights in this are dogshite.

Yes, I wanna to see debris, limbs and bodies fly all over the place like Hacksaw Ridge, Flags of Our Father just to name a few , I wanna see war torn buildings like those in Enemy at the Gates, I wanna see head get blown off like most of the war movies, I wanna see waves until I get seasick, I wanna see lasers like starwars ...ups..wrong example...crazy aerial dogfights like those in Pearl Harbor, Red Baron, I wanna see thousands of boats like Troy, I wanna cry for those that died, i wanna feel sympathy for the spitfire pilot and those in the boats, and parents and family that will never see their love ones, I wanna Hero to follow..

I didn't come to hear only fantastic Audio.....Fuck PG13, I want R version!!!

I don't necessarily agree with that. There doesn't need to be guts flying around like SPR for a war film to work. There is lots of room between that and this.

Honestly the movie wasn't just cold in the way Kubrick movies can be. Stripped of his usual high-minded ideas and script, Dunkirk really showcases Nolan's worst traits (or his best if you're his fan I guess). Everything is so sterile, so rigid, so... boring. It's just that it leaves me cold because none of the characters were developed (they aren't developed, but that's fine). It's cold because most of anything that transpires on screen is so mechanical and devoid of any intrinsic notion of entertainment. It's just stimulating, intellectually or visually. And it feels to me that this is the result of Nolan trying really hard to avoid the usual tropes of war films -- the action, violence, the directness and in-your-faceness of it all, and by eschewing all of that what's left is a bunch of visuals that don't entertain or stimulate. It's an obvious case of try hard. This movie has shown what a terrible entertainer Nolan is.

I'd suggest either TGV 1Utama or TGV Sunway Pyramid.
