STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Sky Italia sources have reported that Manchester United have agreed a fee with Torino for the Italian international right-back.

Talks between the clubs have been ongoing and, after rejecting United's first two bids, Torino have agreed to sell their prized defender at the reported price.

Torino finished ninth in Serie A last season and Urban Cairo, the Torino president, has admitted Darmian will be tough to keep hold of after another impressive season. Champions League football is reportedly a big attraction for the player with Cairo setting a deadline of July 12 (when the squad return to training) for a potential deal for Darmain to be done.

“Everyone who comes to the pre-season training camp will remain with us for the rest of the season,” he told La Stampa.

“Sunday (July 12)  will be the deadline. Three offers have arrived for Darmian, but out of respect for the clubs who have made them, I won’t reveal who they are. Darmian is an extraordinary player who will want to try and win the Champions League one day.”

Sky Italia understand United are one of those clubs that have made the offer.

Manager Louis van Gaal has made a right-back one of his priorities this season and after failing to secure a deal for Barcelona man Dani Alves, the Italian now is United’s number one priority in that particular position, particularly now that Rafael has been attracting interest.

What’s his background?

After progressing through the youth system at AC Milan, the talented full-back failed to break into the first team and was snapped up by Palermo in a co-ownership deal with Milan after a fruitful loan spell at Serie B club Padova.

However, injuries restricted his progress at Palermo - he finished the 2010/2011 season having made just 16 appearances - before being loaned out to Torino at the start of next season, where his career really started to take off.

He made the right-back spot his own that season, which triggered Torino to stump up £500,000 to acquire his services from Palmero and Milan.

In the 2013/14 season he played 37 games in Serie A for Torino and made the league’s team of the season before playing a huge part in the club’s historic run to the last 16 of the Europa League last season, where they were knocked out narrowly by Zenit.

Darmian may ring a bell with English football fans from the 2014 World Cup, where he played in all Italy’s game as they bowed out in the group stages. He was one of the few shining lights in that tournament for the Italians, playing a key role in the 2-1 victory over England in the opening match.

He took advantage of England's part-time left-winger Danny Welbeck’s lack of defensive know-how to put pressure on full-back Leighton Baines and it was from the right flank where the crucial winning goal – scored by Mario Balotelli – came from. He has won 13 caps for Italy.

What are his strengths?

His progression from the days when AC Milan deemed him not good enough has been quite remarkable.

Although not possessed with great natural ability, his positional awareness at full-back along with his high energy to get up and down the line at pace make him a tough nut to crack for opposition wingers. He can also play as a centre-back when required.

It’s this explosive pace that has alerted some of the big clubs from around Europe with full-backs now performing more like wing-backs as some managers like to heap more emphasis on those full-backs to provide the width in their system to find an opening.

Van Gaal is a big believer in this tactic and Darmain would certainly add another dimension to the United attack – something which was missing last season through makeshift full-back Antonio Valencia, whose questionable defensive attributes were targeted by opposition attackers last season. 

Darmain on the right and a fully-fit Luke Shaw on the left would be an exciting proposition for United fans.

Don't care if can't earn much. If he performs as he does this season, and the team improve and goes further in UCL, we will recoup the lost fees back.
Also the team can attract better players next season and sponsors too.

As long as we force RM to make us a very good offer.

I also rather RvP stay, but his main motivation is regular game time ahead of Euro 2016... which LVG cannot guarantee after the season he just had.

LVG is known to trust his young players, wilson will feature more next season. or even playing depay as striker sounds delicious.

Don't think it was all down to woody.. More towards LvG asking them to come over.. Maybe Woody had more influence on the Darmian deal, but Depay and Basti were definitely persuaded by LvG

but if he have gone to liverpool caragher will say bastian is a proper replacement/upgrade to gerrard. if arsenal, they will have a proven winner and leader.

this is not an expansive gamble and hopefully a decent roi.

Hard to see we buy a top of the line striker with Rooney here at least for another season or two and we only play with one up top. He's still a very good striker, although very reliant on service now unlike those days where he was capable of doing everything. Peram dulu Kane at Spurs and see how he pans out. If he repeat his performances, go ahead and break the bank for him next summer. As for backups, no idea. Rooney will miss a couple of weeks throughout the season. Surely we need one unless Chicharito stays.

Would love a pure dribbler, but we have too many options with Depay/Young/Di Maria/Mata out wide. Januzaj should go on loan where he will play regularly.

I don't think we will get a new striker. Depay will play striker when Rooney unavailable. But i feel Rooney will play majority of matches. Best option is Sahko from west ham. He should be ok as backup.

Agreed. Rooney will have one of those spell with injury *touchwood* / goal drought hence we need someone ready to step in to share his workload. Wilson will need time so can't expect him to hit the ground running instantly.

The problem with that is el Kapitan die2 wants to play, and modern formations = better to pack midfield and play a single striker.

Sign any one of the names you mention and you're going to have 1 unhappy prime striker on the bench or we're going to play 2 strikers to keep them happy and midfield will be down a man.

Essentially the same scenario as early last season when LVG tried out 2 from RVP/Falcao/Rooney.

Then Giampiero Ventura, Toro's coach and the man who created Darmian as an international player, moved him to the left, and Matteo didn't blink and barely noticed the difference.

Darmian is superb as a defender: it's very difficult to pass him, in the team he was nicknamed 'polipo' (octopus) because it seems he has many long legs stealing the ball from opponents. In the last 4 years he improved dramatically in the offensive phase: technically he's good but he's not a Brasilian, he can dribble, jump the defender, he's a fairly good crosser and sometimes scores. This season, among others, he scored the winning goals against Athletic Bilbao in Europa League (Toro won 3-2 at San Mames) and vs arch-rivals Juventus in Turin.

Tactically he's world class: I think he could play in virtually any position because he's an intelligent and versatile player, and he 'sees' the different situations very well. I am sure Mr. van Gaal will love his discipline and sagacity, and will make good use of it.

He is a very fit player: he has never missed a match for injury in 4 years, and being very correct he never had a red card and only a few yellows. He is playing in the national team since last year World Cup, always in the starting 11.

A number of teams were interested in signing up Darmian: Inter Milan, Napoli and Roma in Italy, Barcelona, Bayern and ManUtd abroad. ManUtd was more determined, and now he's one of yours.

All Toro's fans are sad to see him going away, but at the same time we are happy that he went to ManUtd. Another player passed from Toro to the Red Devils a few years ago: someone Denis Law, I don't know if you remember him ;-) I hope that'll prove to be a good omen.

Be good with Matteo, my friends. You will learn to love him, his stamina, his fair play, his professionalism, his low profile combined with his terrific performances. Those are the best spent €20m of the last 20 years, mark my words. All the best for your season, I'll try to watch all ManUtd matches.

Rm were not stupid,they wont sell their main gk unless there was agreement reached. So imo they already got some1. Just the matter in time to announce it. Question is,is he really ddg?i dont think so.

What if LVG decides to trial Depay or even Januzaj as a striker and they actually quite good at it? Januzaj actually played striker in the youth teams before, while Depay is Dutch-trained and probably clever enough to play the position (Thierry Henry MkII? icon_idea.gif )

I just saying as I dont think United really need to go chasing a striker, Wilson is very good backup and the reason he only score 2 last season was because he keep getting subbed on with just about 5mins left, or played on the right wing. rclxub.gif

Valencia is shit going forward. Should be regarded as a full time RB these days. Backup for Darmian.

Januzaj should go out on loan. Pity him. If we played 433 right from the start last season, he would have gotten more chances.

As for Fellaini, valuable squad player. As good as he was last season, we would always try to get someone better. Plenty of ganes to share. No worries. Carrick and Schweinsteiger will be rested a lot considering their age.

Well it's my first Android tv box so I don't have any comparisons. But yes, it's very smooth and the remote is ergonomic. The shape and design is quite pleasing and minimalistic.

The HDMI cable that comes with it can be limiting though, so if your TV's HDMI port is on one side and your power supply on the far end it might be a stretch. But this is just my inexperienced observation.
