As reported, Singapore Myrepublic internet service provider may entering Malaysia fixed line market by

OFFERING 100mbps at RM60-RM70 per month

Attached Image

the news link: http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/Busines...ment/?style=biz

the ultimate question will be:

1) will myrepublic given green light to operate in Malaysia? (as it is cut throat price war, TM going to launch RM38 1mbps @ 1GB quota doh.gif )
2) will they being allowed to offer such plan at such price

a little background data about myrepublic:

Better than tak enter. Google Fiber may take very very long only will reach Malaysia. MyRepublic 100 Mbps = RM70, so 70 cent per Megabit not bad what. Hope that it's symmetric broadband like what is offered in Singapore.

If myrepublic can use TM's network at a good price then coverage should not be an issue. It will take them forever to build a new fiber network.

Getting approval is probably the biggest road block.

It seems myrepublic is at least doing something to penetrate our market. Our dream of cheap and fast internet might have some chance of happening.

Wise business practice will tell you that whatever venture myrepublic is going to do here won't be one where they start from scratch. In all likelihood, they will come into the market by subsuming into a current established, but not entirely successful broadband concern like, maybe, Redtone or YTL e-solutions or maybe both.

They will get a headstart that way and use whatever presence and infrastructure the existing company already has. Think of how BP became BHP, Esso and Mobil became Petron, and Carrefour became Aeon.

It makes sense that way.

But in any case, I am not going to argue, debate or waste my energy speculating about what can, will or should happen. I'll just wait until the service, if any, becomes a real product in the market.

Kind of how I couldn't care less what Time Telecom were doing or promising until their Time Fibre Broadband service for consumers became a reality and were a legitimate alternative to TM-Unifi/Streamyx and Maxis Broadband for many people. The other bit-part players like ABNxcess and PenangFon by OCE need not apply.

I won't get my hopes "too high" , although i appreciate new player comes into the play with wholesome goodness of 100Mbps at a very affordable price, i sure ain't gonna buy it if there's some gotcha's etc: quota in placed (fair n reasonable quota are tolerable).

Have a glance to the rest of the world ISP's , every major ISP's are enforcing quota bandwidth on an astonishing speed or suffer the reduced speed (which what the current ISP is doing atm) with no quota being enforced.

Very true, but somehow because we are dealing with Malaysians, high bandwidth + quota = government's fault! biggrin.gif

I will be thrilled to see this happen.
If it did, TM is going to get rekt, but tho coverage in East Malaysia is certainly very limited for the time being. I really hope they are going to put extra efforts to extend Fibre networks.

For now, finger crossed.

Internet plans need more attention from everyone to deter gov + TM strategy to overtake our saturated market.

well i can guarantee you, nothing will happen until

2. the government gives the thumbs up for myrepublic to compete in our isp market (this is the biggest question of all)
PS: another reason i like myrepublic, they also offer a service to

1. gamers can request change of routing, if that is needed.
2. very transparent. you can check the latency of your service using their own tools.
3. you can request for a permanent static ip on request at no additional costs !!  icon_idea.gif

Every ISP needs a licence to operate. Being in this industry, republic statement is just cakap2 only. Unless the company buy an existing ISP (or smaller ISP in Malaysia), i doubt that it will be implemented in this year or 2016.

is there any rules how exactly they can apply for a license from mcmc to start operating  hmm.gif  ? or some sort of backchannels they can use  brows.gif  *cough
*
If im not mistaken, they have to apply individual licence in which they to get minister's green light. That alone will take about 3months ++. Not counting all relevant compliance requirements such as bumi shareholding quota, minimum paid up capital yada yada more less takes about a year to complete. This does not taking to account the backhaul, CMS, marketing, customer support. So you do the math

Malaysian living in Singapore for the moment and using MyRepublic. Slight correction, permanent static IP has a one-time charge of S$50. By default they only give private IP addresses (much like Maxis), probably due to IP address exhaustion. That said, MyRepublic seems like the only ISP currently that doesn't have IPv6 access.

Speed's good, no observable throttling, good routing for most cases, no bandwidth caps either.

I don't have Gigabit Ethernet, but I can consistently achieve > 90 Mbps downstream over WiFi. With GbE you can easily get > 500 Mbps on the downstream.

International bandwidth is pretty decent too, depending on where/who you test with.

Oh they have this service called Teleport too which allows you to use Netflix, Hulu, etc without the use of any VPN or special software.

Overall quite satisfied with their service. (Should also add that they are already operational in New Zealand and Indonesia).

surprising they don't do ipv6. the ipv4 is running out now doh.gif icann gave another final warning that the current supply for ipv4 addresses is now strictly limited.
Yeah, I think they are pretty much the only ISP in Singapore that doesn't have any form of IPv6 access. (SingTel doesn't have either, but at least they have 6rd).

Haven't been using any VPN for torrents, but so far no trouble. Haven't received any warning letter either tongue.gif It's only when content providers decide to take action, otherwise it's usually fairly quiet.

Yeah, some places have really suboptimal routes. It depends on the peers. For example, speed tests to San Francisco to Unwired vs Comcast makes a huge difference. So I did a test again to Softlayer Communications (the previous one was Vodafone UK), the results were much better:

Has led the price destruction of Internet use in Singapore "MyRepublic (Meili public)" are, not only to the country, we have begun emerged in Southeast Asia. The company, four companies first Internet provider in Singapore. Features, cheap price for the communication speed of the Internet, that would cost performance.

Communication fee is not repel the 3 minutes of 1-- major rival

According to the Singapore Straits Times, the user can use the communication services of 1Gbps per month 49.99 Singapore dollars. When converted, the cost per month 1Mbps is about 5 cents. And Given that it is the country's largest carrier, "Singtel (SingTel)" it is 13.9 cents, the price advantage's obvious.

MyRepublic of home page excerpt from
Other competitors also, the 2-position of the "StarHub (StarHub)" is similar services in the monthly 395 Singapore dollar, the 3-position of the M1 provides 399 Singapore dollars. Even rival MyRepublic also referred to "ViewQwest (View Quest)", since it provides a monthly 149 Singapore dollars, it is understood that the away across the board increase competition.

At an average speed of communication, and Asia of the top three countries with the (Akamai Technologies research) to compare the cost per month 1Mbps, South Korea is 2.5 cents, Japan is 3.0 cents, Hong Kong is 3.5 cents. Although there still is a difference, it can be said that MyRepublic is closer the price of Singapore to the level of other countries.

Indonesia, a strong and pricing in Malaysia

According to reports of TeleGeography, it was announced already MyRepublic plays overseas expansion in New Zealand the other day, to advance in Indonesia. Country of Bahasa, Parenbangu, Surabaya, etc., to start providing services in the country nine locations.

In Indonesia Website of it has published a communication plan. In communication service of 300mMbps, the "Basic Plan" lowest per month about 15US dollars, is to provide a top-level "Super Nova Plan" from month about 70US dollars.

Malcom Rodriguez, CEO of MyRepublic is planning to expand into Malaysia. The 100Mbps communication services in the country, it will be provided in a monthly 16 ~ 19US dollars. Is the country's largest carrier, "Telekom Malaysia (Telekom Malaysia)," provides a 1Mbps of communication services as at $ 30US. It seems that trying to wake the price destruction in advance destination.

Rich investment money in the background of bold business development

The bold price destruction and aggressive background promote the overseas expansion, there is an abundant funds.

MyRepublic in 2014, Indonesia's zaibatsu "Sinar Mas (Shinarumasu)" under the umbrella of the carrier "Sunshine Network (Sunshine Network)", a French-based carrier "Free mobile" founder of the billionaire ranking at 136 of the Forbes from Xavier Niel said, it has raised 34 million Singapore dollars together.

Using its abundant funds, and expand the campaign for the acquisition user. For example, first arrival to the 100 people of the service contractor, was to be able to use the communication services in one year virtually free. Besides, we held the awards event that determines the excellent smartphone app, the winner, such as by providing marketing support of upper limit 25 000 Singapore dollars equivalent, and have increased the profile.

oh man, im desperate to sign up for an internet line now.
current fiber providers lock you in for 2 years at a crazy rate why not 12 or 18 months?
for late bills they are so punctual to cut your lines, anything else, its a hassle to contact them and fix it which takes forever
anyway, sub rm100 fiber seems like a dream

hm interesting....

does your torrent speed with majority of sources from US also reflect speeds of 100-200mbps ? or can you get 1000mbps ? just wondering  hmm.gif

cauz if still 100-200mbps, then i'd downgrade to a 100-200mbps package which is cheaper, because that would be pretty much all your getting anyway  smile.gif
*
Yep, if the peers at US/Europe, the max I would get is around 20MBps. 1000mbps only available peers in SG/MY.

To answer your question of downgrade to 100-200mbps, no. I was in 100mbps MyRepublic internet last time and only able to get 20-30 mbps to US.
Looks like the speed to international server is around 20% of your subscribed speed. The reason i was in 1gpbs now is because my 100mbps plan is expired and its the same price with 1gbps.

For torrents I usually use iptorrents & it's pretty fast.

even got tppa, but gov said somehow it got secure 'the interest of bumi co. and glc' during the negotiation, maybe got 'exception terms' in agreement for malaysia alone

since US eagerly wanna hinder CN glocal influences, to get SEA nation support, no big surprise if US 'let go' a bit

The fact that the all major internet announcements on this have to do with only TM is pretty much nail to the coffin on this.

I can safely say that other ISPs would have been here already if it was possible for them to even come in due to the huge market here for 'proper' internet access

Sure MyRepublic cannot get in Malaysia, simply because all Malaysian prefer/love slow speed internet.

This is also why Malaysia ISP giant has been so successful in fulfilling people needs by providing/maintaining slow speed network. Slow is the new black (In bolehland)

This means that P2P file-sharing applications are allowed to run as fast as possible as long as they do not disrupt higher priority applications such as video streaming or gaming. Singapore la of course. Yes, 1Gbps already available in SG but not to all mainstream users yet. Same thing in S.Korea, 10Gbps also available in certain areas but will roll out to all major places by 2017.

Ping in games is unfortunately not something that any ISP can directly fix for every game (that means don't ever expect under 10ms for most online games, ever), not in this region.

It's to do with gaming itself rather. Can go into a whole different topic on that which will derail this thread.

HEllo, wanted to ask. Whats the process needed to set up?

I mean like if malaysia allows myrepublic to get into malaysia.

Do they need to install new fibre line again or they will use back the same fibre line?
or some other process

Lets say if malaysia allows them to enter today, approximately how long will us to be able to start subscribing and using?

Thank you!

Fiber support Local Loop Unbundling which can be learned more from here. If Malaysia approve the license application today, they can start operate within a week.

If myRepublic really gets approved and the internet coverage is stable, everyone would have taken it already. So hoping there's some changes in Malaysia.

I think you mean MyKleptocracy?

In any case, while I am skeptical anything concrete and promising will be happening anytime soon, I shall try to remai quietly hopeful. If nothing else positive comes out of it, maybe the TPPA will force their hand. Then again, we thought that about the ASEAN free trade agreement previously, and what it would do to car prices, etc. But here we still are in 2015.

MyRepublic announces nationwide 1Gbps symmetrical UFB for SMEs

ISP MyRepublic is announcing a New Zealand wide enterprise grade 1Gbps symmetrical UFB service at mass market pricing for small and medium-sized businesses, starting at $499.99 for fibre broadband with unlimited data.

"Businesses were prioritised in the UFB rollout, yet they"re under-represented," says MyRepublic managing director Vaughan Baker. "Big business has had 1Gbps connections for a long time, but from today SMEs can take advantage of those same connection speeds."

"Driving ultra-high speed broadband to mass-market prices is critical in increasing SME competitiveness in New Zealand so they can punch above their weight both locally and abroad. Today's announcement will ultimately drive corresponding increases in GDP, jobs, capital and investment across New Zealand – at a time when global digital infrastructure is improving at a breath-taking rate regionally."

APAC is surging ahead with ultra-high speed broadband, with Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan ranked by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) as being in the Top 5 globally for average peak connection speed. "New Zealand needs to be more ambitious, to get itself into the top 10 and achieve a credible global ranking."

"As at June 2015, fibre connections made up 5 percent of all broadband connections (up from 2 percent in 2014), and the market share of fibre connections is increasing. Compared with other countries in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), New Zealand"s fibre connections were still below the average value of 17 percent." (Statistics NZ, 2015)

The data also shows that today 33% of the subscriptions have no data cap and average consumption is 45GB per household connection. The company claims to sign up 300 to 400 new fibre broadband subscribers on a daily basis.

According to the press pack distributed MyRepublic is planning to launch Australian operations in March 2016 with Malaysia following as well.

I am afraid that Myrepublic might follow Abnxcess' fate. They failed to penetrate the market because of difficulty to expand the coverage.

Myrepublic Indon only managed to cover very small area in Jakarta.

Abnxcess is quite successful at expanding coverage. The problem with abn is that their network are oversold which resulted server overload.

abn actually called me up for some promotions last time but apparently on this forum itself got many bad reviews saying that they throttle your internet during peak hours. That was the only reason I didn't get them.

Are you using abn or unifi now?

I used to be on ABN for 7-8 months before terminating. Fo the first 5 months, even when the network is throttled, it's barely noticable. After than, on peak hour, I felt like I was using Streamyx 1Mb doh.gif

If anything US is definitely NOT a good example.

Friend studied there had to pay 120 USD per month for a satellite connection (not even cable) which sucks just because he's not in urban area.

Finally got to move after a year but was stuck with Verizon which is notorious to have legendary terrible customer service (which TM is miles ahead on which shows how bad they are), and speed is stuck at 10mbps for years with a data cap.

Comcast, Verizon and AT&T has been known to sent death threats to their customers for bringing too much questions and requests. They can be very nasty.

They're all just dinosaur companies sitting on billions of dollars of assets just waiting to cash out by shareholders.

Verizon is known for their dirty tactics of shutting down their copper POTS telephone networks and forcing their customers to take up 4G mobile broadband with  small monthly quotas.

Small community based networks built by the locals are still the best choices if you're lucky enough to live in a town with internet savvy population.
*
To add, the big 3 in the US will also monitor your usage like a bee.
Sure, that's what all ISPs in the world do, but any of them in the US can and WILL send you warnings, tell the feds, and knock your door down if you're on their shitlist of unlucky people if you just so happen to be torrenting some new movie, VPN or not. I've seen it happen with my own 2 eyes.

Think like in msia? suka suka torrent 24/7 and no one kacau you? Think again lol.

TM may look like retards in this country, but compare to many others... they're actually quite saint.

if you see TM rapidly setup more sale kiosk along shopping mall, roadside, shoplot, bank area, floods of commercial ads, promotion email, phone calls, then can be an indicator competitor is coming.

If you check Steam statistics page

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content

In Malaysia listing, there is MYHOSTING in the list, the speed is 65.3Mbps, some people will quickly judge it by saying it's a mistake from Steam since the naming got "SG" behind, but if you check Singapore statistics, there is another MYHOSTING in the list with higher download speed of 69.5Mbps though.

MYHOSTING is actually MyRepublic Ltd according here.

http://bgp.he.net/AS56300#_asinfo

We all know they already started their business in Indonesia and it appears in Indonesia listing too with another name "AS63859" which leads us to MyRepublic Indonesia.

http://bgp.he.net/AS63859#_asinfo

Maybe they are testing privately here and haven't applied an official AS name so the listing in Steam is still reflecting with the SG name?

Oh interesting informations smile.gif Thank you!
TM call for so many times to ask me for upgrade, but I think I may switch to Maxis Fibre (which cost rm128/month only, cheaper and faster, based on statistic).

But due to this thread, I hold my plan (since if I switch, have to tied for 24 months again)

MyRepublic had minimal intention of leasing fiber infrastructure. They rather build their own infrastructure.

Wow, that is stunning....I remember being stationed in Jakarta for a few months over 10 years ago. The state of the internet and it's infrastructure was downright appalling.

It's amazing that Indonesia has basically leapfrogged Malaysia in this department, what a sad state of affairs.

MyRepublic are renting pre built fiber infrastructures in places where fiber infrastructures are open for 3rd party ISP to lease. For example in Singapore, they use NetLink Trust (formally Opennet), in NZ they use UFB (Chorus), in Australia, NBN (NBN Co). The only country they build their own fiber is in Indonesia, because their Indonesia partner Sinarmas is a large conglomerate there and they own some of the fibers, so MR juz use it and roll it out for FTTP. They will most likely use TM's HSBB as HSBB covers a large footprint now.

Cheer,
Jack.

Yes, no other option apart from TM. Hopefully TM charges a fair few to them and not overcharging from fear of MyRepublic's threat.

myrepublic able to roll out service in Indonesia which larger than malaysia geographically

but here still face many 'obstacles' although we are so close to sg HQ and yet still nothing happen

definitely can see malaysia going to be outperformed by neighbouring country in a faster pace that one would regret when one realise it is too late to catch up

At least they got something to offer initially and expand in the future~
Even Unifi is also using hybrid for high rise building, combining coaxial cables from the fiber optic hub~
Hopefully they can expand ABNxcess network because their coverage is near to my area~

Seems like TIME is in the direction of offering high speed plans at affordable price which is what MyRepublic is aiming to do as well. I'm hoping that both companies can collaborate on something and prepare for market domination. brows.gif

Malaysian will have to pay expensive and relative slow speed for another 10 more years.
Especially for ADSL users. brows.gif brows.gif

but does the contract mean there will not be local loop unbundling for the next 10 years? seems like contract for expansion of network only..

means they build the infrastructure and people need to rent from them if wanna use the infrastructure, therefore we got expensive broadband... you see Time build their own, therefore cheaper but due to limited budget, so there is also limited coverage... but nvm, we wait till 13 April and see what TM-P1 are going on with the Webe - RM8-10/month for 20GB,100min,1000 SMS or RM80/month for everything unlimited~

i can't wait d... anyway, u mobile just launched the Video ONZ~ so i will straight away subscribe P70 to get 15GB and unlimited 1.5Mbps streaming on various video apps~ i think is cheaper than subscribing Streamyx 1Mbps and speed might be stable than Streamyx 2Mbps (My place still doesn't has Unifi...) i can stop this anytime i wanted to when MyRepublic or Webe enter the market with best value package~

it's ok, i know they will sure extend it and the date mentioned is only free for some channels, others like youtube got no expiry date: http://www.u.com.my/tnc/7473

17. From 28 April 2016 until 31st July 2016 (Promotion Period), the Video-Onz is provided free of charge by U Mobile. However, during and after the Promotion Period, some of our Video-Onz partners may charge you subscription fee for accessing their services or viewing their Content. Where such fees are applicable, they will be borne by you. The methods of payment and fees may differ between our Video-Onz partners and such information will be available on our Video-Onz partners’ website or mobile app should you wish to subscribe.

18. After the Promotion Period, your subscription to Video-Onz will automatically terminate. If you wish to continue, you can do so by sending ON VIDEOONZ to 28118. Subscription will be charged at the published rate notified on our website. This is in addition to any subscription fee chargeable by our Video-Onz partners.

Even though there will be a charges like less than RM30(hopefully RM10 or extending the free period), add up won't be more than RM100, still a better price as compare to Streamyx/P1 1Mbps (no contract binding as well, can quit anytime when MyRepublic or webe came in). This is 1.5Mbps and the speed is very stable as MIUI can see the speed on top: constantly 192kBps, which is 1536kbps, divide by 1024 u will get exactly 1.5Mbps. And i think constant 1.5Mbps is way better than Streamyx/P1 2Mbps. Anyway i have also tried to download apps from Google Play Store and the speed is also 1.5Mbps. I double confirm this is consume by Video Onz data because my high speed data has finished (2GB for U58).

Don't worry, Malaysia still have Time and Symphonet. They can compete with each other, just the two players have limited infrastucture expansion. I think Time had learn something from the past bad experience and they are still recovering.

UniFi might share their infra with them but they might not share with them also. First, UniFi is not an open access fiber network, but UniFi shared its infra with P1 and Maxis.

Ah, can't believe I forgot about maxis. Yep, doesn't astro also use the same infra for their broadband?
Anyways, the current infra still cause a lot of problem to users I think. Everyday we can see people complaining to unifi.

Unless its just because unifi is so bad at their job

Only because they have the scale, financial reserves and some political support to undergo such a large scale infrastructure job. Over here in our dear country, infrastructure projects usually go to connected parties.

Another factor is our MCMC, just another sitting lame duck not pushing telcos harder and further. How to compete with other countries' infocom developments?

If really open up, makes no sense that our TM internet plans being so damn expensive yet with such a laughing stock speeds.

the news link: http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/Busines...ment/?style=biz
the ultimate question will be:

1) will myrepublic given green light to operate in Malaysia? (as it is cut throat price war, TM going to launch RM38 1mbps @ 1GB quota  doh.gif )
2) will they being allowed to offer such plan at such price

Well I don't know why they want to enter Msia market 2 years ago but suddenly its not a worthy investment. Let just hope they will enter one day. I still think this has to do with the legal thing since government invest a lot for TM to lay the cable around Msia.

This was what the CEO said under his company's press statement. They already have existing infra which is expanding around Bangsar South all the way to Cyberjaya for corporate lines. Next move is Penang and JB.

Then finally to other major cities after that.
