I plan to drive along Sanriku Coast just for leisure and enjoy the coastal view. Any sifus can comment whether it is do-able with this itinerary? Travel time is approximate from Google Maps. I'm afraid will encounter harsh weather condition or heavy traffic, then may have to slow down.

Day 1:
Tokyo to Morioka via Tohoku Shinkansen
- Rent car, drive to Miyako (via route 106 ~100km, 2hrs)
> Fish Market, Jodogahama
- Goishi Coast (~110km, 2.5hrs)
- Ishinomaki (via route 45 ~110km, ~2.5hrs)
> Overnight

Day 2:
- From Ishinomaki, ferry to Tashirojima
- Matsushima Bay
> Overnight in a nice ryokan

Day 3:
- Shiogama Fish Market
- Fox Village in Shiroishi (via Tohoku Expressway ~72km, ~1.5hrs)
- Sendai (via Tohoku Expressway ~56km, ~1hr)

Finally, Sendai back to Tokyo via Tohoku Shinkansen

1. Any recommendation for onsen ryokan at Matsushima Bay or Shiogama?
2. How is the weather and traffic like in late Mar/early Apr?

Thanks notworthy.gif

OMG!! You are first person here in This thread since V7 finally do something so much different!!!
Sanriku Coast driving!! Oh Yeah But I won't go Sanriku Coast for rest of my life anymore. It trigger me Tohoku Earthquake memories. Very bad memories.

After Tohoku Earthquake + Tsunami. This Cat island been heavily damage but still got alot survivor cat.
There are 4 rulez on Island
1. Do not feed the Cat
2. Photography are not allow at the middle of the road
3. Off-limits to private property
4. Tourist are not allow carry any food walking around the Island (cat can sense those food)

Matsushima Bay Part.
Don't forget to enjoy Oyster!!! Matsushima most iconic food.
Dont forget sightseeing Godaido Hall.
Sry can't help you on any Ryokan at Matsushima because it still near to Sendai City and I was staying at Sendai. Never overnight at Matsushima before But I heard this hotel are one of the best ''Hotel New Komatsu Kofutei''

Weather will be Spring time. Perfect temperature. Around 12 - 20 Celsius

Thanks for the tips! This will be first time driving in foreign country where English is not main language. So got a bit of worry, and the Sanriku region probably cater more to Japanese speaking local tourists. Glad to know temperature is nice but will sea breeze make it very cold? I can only pray that weather will be good to me.

The tsunami was a terrible incident, but it's also really amazing that the people in the region overcome quickly and have a lot of the damaged areas repaired. From what I read, a lot of attractions have already reopened after reconstruction. Since I've never been to any coastal region in Japan and it looks so beautiful in pictures, I really want to see it for myself blush.gif

Haha I didn't know cannot carry food around Cat Island. I like to carry some snacks and eat on park benches, enjoy scenery. I see in some programme fishermen will feed fishes to the cats. Hope I can catch that scene laugh.gif

I am sorry if I missed any tips you already provided. Any ideas how to spend my solo trip since I will stay in Ota, Tokyo for three nights. Places nearby Ota do not look awesome but for few days I dont plan on going too far (unless the route is easy). I have my japan map on my phone, and offline gps. I will also rent pocket wifi, because I think no tourists have been without it. biggrin.gif
