If you wanna use Garmin Mobile XT, I suggest you to get Mobile 10x from Garmin and it will cost you over RM600. But if you choose not to use that software any other BT GPS will do the job.

QUOTE(SoloNg @ Mar 27 2008, 09:49 AM) Actually you don't need to buy the sd card to use Garmin Mobile XT, i use the one downloaded from the Garmin site. Download the file and install, but you will need to register the program, then only can you use it with your internal GPS. Free register or need to pay? Can you give me link for that software at Garmin site? This post has been edited by Deani_77: Mar 27 2008, 10:11 AM

In term of road navigation, the accuracy was not a big deal. As long your GPS can received signal from satellite good enough already. But if you planning to draw GPS map then accuracy will be more important. That why some GPS tracker using external antenna for solution.

QUOTE(THT United Gadgets @ Mar 31 2008, 06:08 PM) Hmmm, how is this done? Mine is actually enabled with BT, but the antenna is a short and stumpy block on top of the unit (its a Garmin nuvi 310, btw)... Like i mentioned in my earlier post, i have to wait outside the car for the SatNav to track the satellites and acquire at least five, before placing the unit on the vehicle mount... Very ma-fan, especially when it's raining heavily or in a basement parking garage! I remember reading it at malsingmaps.com. One member use business card box (made from clear plastic). He stick it on top of his car roof and put GPS unit inside the box.

QUOTE(THT United Gadgets @ Mar 31 2008, 11:33 PM) Wah, like dat also can? Interesting, but how will he see the GPS directions then, since the unit is on top of the car roof? Like baronic says, I refers to BT GPS. For stand alone GPS you can choose to use external antenna.

I never use nuvi series. But if it can be connected to external antenna. It is better to get external antenna. Check unit manual for more info.

My personal view, I will not choose this unit for navigation purpose. Availability of map and it details may be less in our region. For Malaysia, currently Garmin (map from malsingmaps.com) and Mapking was the best choice for road navigation (details road all over Semenanjung, Sabah and Sarawak).

If casual GPS user, using PDA just enough. You can get car charger for PDA to extend your battery life.

For Malsingmaps.com you can download their map for free. But if you the most updated map you need to contribute a POI, track or give them error report in order to make the map better.

What software are you using now? Nokia maps? Try be in the open sky place to get satellite fix. Please be patient sometime it will take more than 10 minutes to get a satellite fix for the first time.

If you asking me :
1. convenient - standalone GPS 2. good maps - Garmin base device (using map from malsingmaps.com) 3. cheapest to run - Get in-car charger
But for occasional usage and you already have primary hand phone, I will suggest you to get a PDA base (either built-in GPS or using BT GPS). You can use for other thing and when come to navigation you can opted to switch off the phone (avoid disturbance).

QUOTE(THT United Gadgets @ Apr 12 2008, 10:14 AM) Speaking of Malsingmaps, if you have a standalone GPS, you can download the latest free map from their site (i.e. without an unlock code)... This map is updated as at Jan 2008, FYI... That map can be use on PDA (Garmin Que or Mobile XT) not only standalone GPS.
