Israeli drone crashes in Lebanon for 2nd time in 3 weeks

user posted image

QUOTE
An Israeli drone crashed in the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli on Saturday, the military said, in the second such incident in three weeks.

"At around 8:30 am (0530 GMT), a drone belonging to the Israel went down in the port of Tripoli, and the army has taken the necessary measures," the Lebanese military said in a statement, without elaborating.

A security official said the pilotless aircraft crashed into the sea.

"Fishermen had the impression a plane was falling down towards their harbour, close to the main port of Tripoli," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"They alerted the army which has retrieved the aircraft from eight metres (26 feet) under water. It turned out later that it was an Israeli drone," the source added.

An spokesman for the Israeli military refused to comment on the reports.

On June 21, Israel carried out an air strike in eastern Lebanon to destroy one of its drones that had crashed in the mountains outside the village of Saghbine.

Tu-95 Bear strategic bomber crashes near Khabarovsk, Russia

user posted image

QUOTE
A Tu-95 strategic bomber has crashed during training flight 80km from the city of Khabarovsk, eastern Russia, the Defense Ministry said.

“The flight was being conducted without ammunition. The plane fell in deserted area, there is no destruction on the ground,” says a statement from the ministry. The crew ejected from the aircraft before the crash, it added.

The incident happened near the aviation ground of Litovka, 60km from Khabarovsk, a source told TASS, adding that the suspected cause of the incident is the failure of three power units.

However, according to a TASS source, “Preliminary data shows that a fuel valve collapsed and as a result all four engines failed.”

Currently An-12 transport aircraft and Mi-8 transport helicopters have been deployed to reach the crew, a source told TASS News Agency.

According to the sources, the strategic bomber exploded and was entirely destroyed.

The Russian long-range ‘Bear’ (Tu-95) is a large, four-engine strategic bomber. It entered into service back in 1956 in the Soviet Union and is expected to fly with Russian Air Force until at least 2040. It is capable of carrying up to 12,000kg of missiles, including a nuclear payload.

In June, a Tu-95 overshot the runway after taking off in Russia’s Far East, resulting in injuries to several crewmembers. That incident prompted the Russian Defense Ministry to temporarily freeze all flights carried out by the aircraft.

Russian An-12 transport plane crash

user posted image

QUOTE
A Russian An-12 transport plane crashed in Chelyabinsk. Photos show the plane resting on the ground fairly intact, so hopefully the crew is ok. 4 days ago a Tu-95 bomber crashed in the same general area. The total count is now 7 serious crashes, including fatalities, since the beginning of summer.

There are comments in world press that Russia is flying an aging fleet from the 1960s and 1970s with a record of poor maintenance and poor funding, especially in the 1990s when the planes suffered from neglect. The same planes are still in the air. Russian Air Force me be being pushed beyond its limit because Kremlin is demanding levels of readiness not seen before.

Greek F-16 pilot allegedly landed jet in Turkey to withdraw money

user posted image

QUOTE
According to French website RadiCocpit.fr, Greek fighter pilot Homere Sipostopoulos allegedly landed his F-16 in Turkey, withdrew money from local ATMs then returned back to base.

Already familiar with the area from frequent training exercises over the Aegean, pilot Sipostopoulos was flying a patrol over the Greek island of Samos when he suddenly changed course and head towards an abandoned airfield in the town of Söke just 3 kilometers away in Turkey’s western province of Aydın.

Upon landing at the airfield, which had once been used for military training flights but had been shut down 15 years ago, the Greek pilot then taxied his plane into one of the dilapidated hangars nearby to hide it.

Exiting his plane, Sipostopoulos then proceeded to Söke city center on foot and withdrew TRY 2,000 (EUR 700) from three different ATMs, each, before heading to the change office and having it all converted to Euros.

Now with over EUR 2,000 on hand, the pilot quickly returned to the hangar and took off, returning back to the Nea Anchialos airfield in Greece.

US military drone crashes in Iraq: Pentagon

user posted image

QUOTE
A US military drone flying a combat mission has crashed in Iraq after losing communication, the US Defense Department has confirmed.

The MQ-1 Predator drone crashed Monday near Samawa in the Muthana Province of south-western Iraq, Pentagon spokesman Army Major Roger Cabiness said Tuesday.

The unmanned aircraft was returning to its base after an intelligence mission when it had "technical complications," Cabiness said.

There were no weapons on board the aircraft and the Pentagon is working with Iraqi authorities to recover the aircraft, the spokesman added.

The MQ-1 Predator is built by General Atomics and used primarily by the United States Air Force and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Samawah intelligence chief said Iraqi intelligence teams had located a plane body after receiving reports from factory workers.

Several pictures of the downed UAV circulated on the Twitter online social media site.

The resulting fire on USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) following the explosion of a Raytheon SM-2 Block IIIA guided missile.

QUOTE
A Navy guided missile destroyer was damaged after a missile exploded shortly after launch during an exercise off the U.S. Atlantic coast on Saturday, Navy officials have confirmed to USNI News.

“On July 18 at approximately 9 a.m. (EDT) a Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) test missile exploded after suffering a malfunction as it was fired from the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) during a planned missile exercise off the coast of Virginia,” read a statement from Naval Sea Systems Command provided to USNI News.

There were no reported injuries and though the ship suffered a small fire on its port side “from missile debris” the destroyer was able to return to Naval Station Norfolk, Va. unassisted, NAVSEA said.

“It is too early to determine what, if any, effect this will have on the ship’s schedule,” read the statement.

British Army examines plans to create a Sikh regiment

user posted image

QUOTE
The head of the British Army is looking at proposals to recreate a Sikh regiment, a minister has said.

The Chief of the General Staff is examining the feasibility of a Sikh unit, including the possibility of a reserve company, and it “may well have merit”, Mark Francois told the Commons.

A new unit would inherit many of the “proud traditions of Sikh regiments” from the Army’s past, he said.

Thousands of Sikh soldiers served in the British Army in the 19th century and in the First and Second World Wars, and 10 Victoria Crosses have been won by soldiers serving in Sikh regiments.

Most likely, but if you read up the news the number of sikh currently in the armed force is just around 160 personnel, clearly not enough to form a regiment
They most probably will open up the recruitment to foreign sources like the gurkhas

Military helicopter crash kills one solider in Slovakia

user posted image

QUOTE
A solider was killed on Tuesday in a military helicopter crash in eastern Slovakia, a senior official confirmed, Xinhua reported.

The crash of the Mi-17 near the village of Hradisko in eastern Slovakia on Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of one of the three crew members, said Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces Peter Gajdos here later in the day.

"The helicopter took off from an airbase in Presov at 1.30 p.m., and it performed routine training tasks -- landing in unknown terrain," said Galdos.

"The contact with the helicopter's crew was lost in half a hour and a search-and-rescue helicopter was dispatched at 2.13 p.m. to provide medical aid. The man died during resuscitation attempts, while the other two crew members sustained injuries," said Galdos.

Galdos added that until the causes of the accident are ascertained, all Mi-17 helicopters of Soviet production will be banned from flying.

Slovak Defence Minister Martin Glvac, who is now on holiday, will return earlier than planned. The investigation will be conducted by the ministry's Military Airforce Office.
