Colombian military plane crashes, killing all 11 on board
![]() QUOTE BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A Colombian military transport plane has crashed in the country's north, killing all 11 personnel aboard. An air force statement said the twin-engine CASA-235 reported a motor problem before it disappeared. The wreckage was found in the Caribbean province of Cesar. It was not clear what led to the motor failure, but local media said the aircraft was struck by a lightning bolt while flying through bad weather. President Juan Manuel Santos initially reported the accident on Twitter and said 12 people were killed. He tweeted condolences for the "heroes" who lost their life in the accident. The victims' identities and military rank have not been disclosed. [sos1] [sos2] |

North Korea military aircraft may have crashed, says Seoul
![]() QUOTE SEOUL, July 31 (UPI) -- South Korea authorities confirmed a North Korea military aircraft crashed at an airfield in the port city of Wonsan around July 15 and the casualties may have included members of Kim Jong Un's entourage. The site of the accident is most likely the same place where Kim Jong Un attended an air force tournament held in commemoration of North Korea's July 27 "Victory Day," South Korean television network SBS reported. An unidentified source in Seoul's military told Yonhap it is likely the crashed plane was an Antonov AN-2, a Soviet-produced plane. If the aircraft was used in preparation for the aviation tournament, it is possible the casualties on board were members of Kim's security detail, the military source said. There also is speculation the plane may have been a Cessna jet, in which case the casualties on board may have been North Korean dignitaries inspecting the airfield ahead of the tournament, South Korea press reported. Mi-28N helicopter crashes at Aviadarts airshow
![]() QUOTE An Mi-28N military helicopter has crashed near Russia’s Ryazan during an aerobatic display performed as part of the Aviadarts competition in the 1st “military Olympics” in Russia. One pilot managed to eject and his health is in satisfactory condition, but a second pilot died in the crash, according to Russia’s Defense Ministry. While performing a stunt, a helicopter belonging to the Berkuty (Golden Eagles) aerobatic team suddenly banked on one side and started to lose height. “The helicopter went into flat-attitude spin and crash-landed,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement. "According to preliminary report of the hospitalized pilot of Mi-28N, when performing an aerobatic stunt, the emergency alert system of the helicopter reported the failure of the hydraulic boost system,” the Defense Ministry’s press service said in a statement. The helicopter crashed in a forest near the airfield and burst into flames on impact with the ground. Firefighters arrived at the crash site and extinguished the fire within minutes. [sos] |

Syrian government warplane crashes in Idlib province
![]() QUOTE A Syrian government warplane has crashed in a built-up area of the north-western town of Ariha, killing 12 people, activists say. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) activist group said the crash occurred amid bombing raids. Ariha was one of the last government strongholds in Idlib when it was captured by rebels in May. The fall of the Ariha left most of Idlib province, bordering Turkey, in rebel hands. The SOHR said dozens had also been injured in the crash. In January officials said at least 35 soldiers had been killed in a cargo plane crash in Idlib province. State media blamed that the crash on "weather conditions and heavy fog" but al-Nusra rebels, linked to al-Qaeda, said they had shot it down. [sos] |

Afghan military helicopter crash kills all 17 aboard
![]() QUOTE An Afghan military helicopter crashed on Thursday, killing all 17 on board, officials said, in a blow for a fledgling air force whose resources have been stretched since the withdrawal of most international forces last year. Afghan troops have been battling a growing insurgency that has killed and wounded thousands of people since the beginning of the year, with the United Nations putting civilian casualties at almost 5,000 in the first half of the year. Taliban insurgents claimed their fighters shot down the helicopter, but a government official blamed a technical failure for the crash, just hours after a Taliban suicide bomb attack on an Afghan special forces compound killed six people. Twelve soldiers and five crew were killed in the helicopter crash, said Gul Islam Seyal, a government spokesman in the southern province of Zabul, the site of the crash. The helicopter was ferrying military supplies and troops when its pilot radioed in a report of technical difficulties minutes before it hit the ground and caught fire, Seyal added. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the crash, but said it would release details later. A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousef Ahmadi, said on his official Twitter account that the insurgents had shot down the helicopter. However, an accompanying helicopter had reported no enemy fire before the crash, Seyal said. The Taliban often exaggerate battlefield gains. Afghanistan's military has about 150 aircraft and 390 pilots, just a fraction of the air power of NATO, which flew air support, evacuation and supply sorties before last year's drawdown of troops. The bulk of the Afghan fleet is made up of aging Mi-17 transport aircraft, but it was not immediately clear what type of helicopter was involved in the crash. [sos] |
