An Aug. 25 report in Beijing-based newspaper China Aviation News praised the engine division of Xi'an-based aeronautic and aerospace firm AVIC Qingan Group for its achievements in several projects, raising speculation that China may be preparing to develop an aircraft with a higher speed than the US Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird strategic reconnaissance aircraft, according to Shanghai-based news web portal New Outlook.

The report mentions a planned project which would see the development of China's first domestically-made turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine, designed for an unnamed aircraft. The description of this engine suggests something resembling the Pratt & Whitney J58 variable cycle engine used by the SR-71 Blackbird, which is also often described as a turbofan-ramjet engine, due to its unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which allows for increased thrust at high speeds.

A source close to the PLA Air Force was cited by New Outlook as stating that this is part of a project to develop a manned supersonic aircraft, currently in the preparation stages at a domestic research institute. The aircraft is expected to have a top speed faster than the Blackbird on completion, according to the source, although the project is yet to be formally launched.

The China Aviation News report stated that in the first half of 2015, the engine division of AVIC Qingan Group finished the design process for three engine products and gained approval for them in May and July.

The article went on to list descriptions of the three engines as China's first domestically developed turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine designed for an unnamed aircraft, a classic model engine and a classic model engine with a medium bypass ratio. This suggests the latter two are improved versions of the WS-10 and WS-18 turbofan engines, already known to the public.

The turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine project, however, has never before been made public. The article stated that there is no precedent for the project and that China currently has no suitable heat-resistant materials for the project and therefore will have to contract overseas suppliers, adding that without the appropriate tools, they will have to go about making them from scratch.

Indonesia is in discussions with Boeing about offsets related to a planned acquisition of four CH-47F Chinook helicopters.

Boeing technicians have visited Indonesian Aerospace (also known as Dirgantara Indonesia) in Bandung to discuss potential workshare in the programme, and the company has held talks with defence minister Ryamizard Ryacudu about the deal, according to a defence ministry statement.

“The Ministry of Defence plans to buy four Chinook helicopters to strengthen the air force's capabilities. This purchase can be tailored to the real threats facing Indonesia, especially the problem of natural disasters,” says the ministry.

In February, a previous statement from the ministry revealed that talks for the Chinook are underway.

Ten years ago, in 2005, Jakarta expressed interest in possibly obtaining four examples to bolster its disaster relief capabilities. CH-47Ds operated by Singapore were active in disaster relief operations following the 26 December 2004 tsunami, which laid waste to coastal regions of Indonesia’s Aceh province.

A Lockheed CP-140 Aurora was damaged Thursday morning at 14 Wing Greenwood airbase during an attempted takeoff.

“The plane aborted takeoff, we’re not too sure why, and slid off the runway. It’s under investigation,” said airbase spokesman Sgt. Pete Nicholson.

The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. Environment Canada reported conditions for the base at the time as a thunderstorm with rain showers and a visibility of five kilometres, a dramatic drop from the 24 kilometres reported an hour earlier.

All 17 people on board were unharmed and the extent of the damage to the plane is also under investigation, said Nicholson.

The aircraft’s flight was part of its daily operations at the base.

The Royal Canadian Air Force commonly uses the Aurora for maritime patrol.
