doesnt matter for bolkiah at least he is actually a member of the military himself (supreme commander of brunei armed forces), but in case of hishammudin he can be seen wearing military uniform plus the badge even in non-military event essentially abusing his position as defence minister

deswai the jab from sultan johor, get it? icon_idea.gif

Macaques, falcons trained to protect air force from birds ahead of parade

user posted image

(ECNS) -- The Chinese Air Force is training macaques and falcons to help protect their jets from the threat of flying birds, which could jam and ultimately destroy a flying jet, the Beijing News reported. [Special coverage]

The experiment started in April 2014 when an Air Force base in an unspecified location adopted three macaques, said Ma Junliang, an Air Force trainer. After three months, the macaques could follow Ma's orders to dismantle bird nests in trees.

Two of the macaques, named "Qitian" and "Ziyun," can get rid of a nest in approximately one minute. Ma needs to shout "hurry up" at times to encourage the hesitant monkeys, who receive rewards like corn for a job well-done.

Military official Han Bing is hailing the macaque method as cost-effective, low-risk, efficient and the first of its kind in the world.

In addition, the Air Force troop also keeps 10 falcons that are used to drive birds away from the air base. When trainer Ma Wengang blows a whistle, the falcons take off, and then hover within approximately 100 meters of the trainer. This scares other birds away from the area.

The falcons do not need to prey on other birds; their presence simply drives off. They are usually launched two hours before the jets, with three or four falcons needed each day to do the job.

Can China make a plane faster than Lockheed's Blackbird?

user posted image

QUOTE
An Aug. 25 report in Beijing-based newspaper China Aviation News praised the engine division of Xi'an-based aeronautic and aerospace firm AVIC Qingan Group for its achievements in several projects, raising speculation that China may be preparing to develop an aircraft with a higher speed than the US Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird strategic reconnaissance aircraft, according to Shanghai-based news web portal New Outlook.

The report mentions a planned project which would see the development of China's first domestically-made turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine, designed for an unnamed aircraft. The description of this engine suggests something resembling the Pratt & Whitney J58 variable cycle engine used by the SR-71 Blackbird, which is also often described as a turbofan-ramjet engine, due to its unique bleed from the compressor to the afterburner which allows for increased thrust at high speeds.

A source close to the PLA Air Force was cited by New Outlook as stating that this is part of a project to develop a manned supersonic aircraft, currently in the preparation stages at a domestic research institute. The aircraft is expected to have a top speed faster than the Blackbird on completion, according to the source, although the project is yet to be formally launched.

The China Aviation News report stated that in the first half of 2015, the engine division of AVIC Qingan Group finished the design process for three engine products and gained approval for them in May and July.

The article went on to list descriptions of the three engines as China's first domestically developed turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine designed for an unnamed aircraft, a classic model engine and a classic model engine with a medium bypass ratio. This suggests the latter two are improved versions of the WS-10 and WS-18 turbofan engines, already known to the public.

The turbofan-ramjet combined cycle engine project, however, has never before been made public. The article stated that there is no precedent for the project and that China currently has no suitable heat-resistant materials for the project and therefore will have to contract overseas suppliers, adding that without the appropriate tools, they will have to go about making them from scratch.

Unique Grom-2 Missile-Bomb Weapon Created in Russia

user posted image

ZHUKOVSKY (Sputnik) — A unique Grom-2, possessing the destructive utility of both a missile and a bomb, has been developed in Russia, general director of the Tactical Missile Systems Corporation said Wednesday.

“Grom-2 is in fact a glide bomb, as there is another warhead weighing 130 kilograms [286 pounds] instead of an engine with a total weight of 250 kilograms," Boris Obnosov told journalists.

According to Obnosov, the Grom-2 was constructed on the basis of the Kh-38ME modular aircraft guided missile.

Russia's Tactical Missile Systems Corporation was established in 2002 on the Zvezda-Strela research and production center. The corporation produces guided missiles and weapon systems for air, ground and seaborne applications.

Russia to broaden counter-terrorism support, assistance to Egypt

user posted image

Egyptian president Abdel Fatah al-Sissi and Russian president Vladimir Putin has agreed to broaden Russian assistance in counter-terrorism operations in the middle east. The presidents met yesterday at a state visit by the Egyptian president to Moscow, the third in the last two months.

Among the counter-terrorism assistance programs agreed between the two countries include shared military intelligence and increased Russian technical assistance and counter-terrorism training. Putin has also called for Arab regional leaders to create a unified front in their efforts to combat the expansion of IS.

Russia is ramping up its support of al-Sissi after the former military supremo seized power from the democratically elected Muslim Brotherhood-dominated Egyptian government, resulting in a cooling of relations between Cairo and Washington. The US has suspended some of its military adn financial support to Egypt as a result, including reviewing a deal to supply 16 US Apache attack helicopters to Egypt.

Indonesia, Boeing discuss Chinook offsets

By: GREG WALDRON SINGAPORE
Source: Flightglobal.com 7 hours ago

Indonesia is in discussions with Boeing about offsets related to a planned acquisition of four CH-47F Chinook helicopters.

Boeing technicians have visited Indonesian Aerospace (also known as Dirgantara Indonesia) in Bandung to discuss potential workshare in the programme, and the company has held talks with defence minister Ryamizard Ryacudu about the deal, according to a defence ministry statement.

“The Ministry of Defence plans to buy four Chinook helicopters to strengthen the air force's capabilities. This purchase can be tailored to the real threats facing Indonesia, especially the problem of natural disasters,” says the ministry.

In February, a previous statement from the ministry revealed that talks for the Chinook are underway.

Ten years ago, in 2005, Jakarta expressed interest in possibly obtaining four examples to bolster its disaster relief capabilities. CH-47Ds operated by Singapore were active in disaster relief operations following the 26 December 2004 tsunami, which laid waste to coastal regions of Indonesia’s Aceh province.

The Sikorsky was originally designed as an anti-submarine platform for the U.S. Navy, and later was adapted into a devastating jungle war machine.

This one hour documentary tells the story of crews and pilots who flew the Sikorsky S61 during the 1969 Communist insurgency and the evolution of its strategic role in protecting and building the nation.

Royal Canadian Air Force CP-140 Aurora damaged in runway excursion

user posted image

QUOTE
A Lockheed CP-140 Aurora was damaged Thursday morning at 14 Wing Greenwood airbase during an attempted takeoff.

“The plane aborted takeoff, we’re not too sure why, and slid off the runway. It’s under investigation,” said airbase spokesman Sgt. Pete Nicholson.

The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. Environment Canada reported conditions for the base at the time as a thunderstorm with rain showers and a visibility of five kilometres, a dramatic drop from the 24 kilometres reported an hour earlier.

All 17 people on board were unharmed and the extent of the damage to the plane is also under investigation, said Nicholson.

The aircraft’s flight was part of its daily operations at the base.

The Royal Canadian Air Force commonly uses the Aurora for maritime patrol.
