to be fair to them... from the article probably the police was on land.. hard to get a boat in time and 200m is damn hard to shoot at night...

Not go chase something in a very low situational awareness environment (its dark? its a trap? who knows?) even if they could
And polis SOP is to call for backup first before doing anything in any case

from other view, they success cross border until pulau pompom undetected by our side means,
- our surveillance still not good enough
- no enough ship/sea base with radar to detect intruders boat? 
- small ship lack of radar?
- small patrol ship not operation at night? 

1 . it's  a large area with atoll and small island where its very complicated to navigate let alone in the dark
2. Small fast boats are harder to track even with coastal radar
3. The pga patrol boat is a small team patrol that have no radar that is used to patrol in shallow waters area.
4. Ships with radar are usually at the deeper water

I think medium-range UAVs with FLIR camera would probably do the best job of night-time maritime patrols in ESSCOM region. Drone controller at base can even put drone on autopilot and go drink coffee or eat some snacks if they got sleepy.

Calon Panglima Komitmen Datangkan Pesawat Baru

Metrotvnews.com, Jakarta: Calon Panglima TNI Jenderal Gatot Nurmantyo berkomitmen mendatangkan pesawat udara baru bukan hibah atau bekas, pada pengadaan yang akan datang.

"Saya sudah berkomunikasi dengan Komisi I DPR, untuk pesawat udara harus baru. Pengadaan yang akan datang harus baru kecuali yang sudah telanjur (proses pengadaannya)," kata Gatot di Ruang Rapat Komisi I DPR, Jakarta, Rabu (1/7/2015) malam.

Hal itu dikatakan Gatot usai menjalani uji kelayakan dan kepatutan calon Panglima TNI. Dia menjelaskan pesawat udara berbeda dengan alutsista yang berada di darat yang bisa diperbaiki di tempat apabila ditemukan kerusakan. Namun, menurut dia, apabila pesawat mogok atau rusak ketika terbang maka akan hancur seperti beberapa kejadian kecelakaan pesawat milik TNI.

"Apabila pesawat mogok maka hancur, sehingga komitmen saya dan Komisi I DPR RI untuk pesawat udara harus yang baru," katanya.

Gatot menjelaskan Indonesia bukan negara kaya, namun semua alutsista yang sudah usang harus ditinggalkan dan diganti dengan yang baru agar operasional TNI bisa berjalan. Dia mengatakan pembelian alutsista dari luar negeri harus memiliki transfer teknologi sehingga lambat laun Indonesia bisa memproduksi secara mandiri dan tidak tergantung dengan negara lain.

"Alutsista yang dimiliki Indonesia ada yang lama dan baru. Yang lama masih kami gunakan namun harus dipelihara," jelas jenderal bintang empat ini.

Kata Gatot, kategori pesawat ada dua yaitu layak terbang atau tidak layak. Gatot mencontohkan pesawat Hercules produksi tahun 1964 masih digunakan Singapura dan Bangladesh namun dilakukan sistem pemeliharaan secara berkesinambungan.

"Sistem pemeliharaannya setiap 50 jam terbang ada 'opname' dan pengecekan lalu per tiga tahun dan per enam tahun dilakukan cek," bebernya.

Saat ini, menurut dia, ada 12 pesawat Hercules tahun 1964 dan 12 dari produksi tahun 1975 ke atas. Dia mengatakan tidak mungkin menghentikan operasi pesawat Hercules tersebut meskipun dengan alasan pesawat sudah uzur. "Apabila itu (operasional pesawat Hercules dihentikan) lalu kita mau menggunakan apa?" tukasnya.

The upgrade of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)'s F-16 fighter aircraft seeks to equip the RSAF’s ageing fleet of F-16s - which first entered service in 1998 - with new and advanced capabilities to keep them operationally relevant. The new Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar represents a significant capability upgrade, extending the F-16's detection range and enabling the fighter aircraft to track and engage multiple targets at greater distances. The upgrade will also equip the F-16s with an all-weather, ground-attack capability, enabling it to strike targets with more capable precision munitions such as the Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition (LJDAM). Modern advanced air-to-air weapons will equip the aircraft with the capability to engage a wide spectrum of air threats within visual ranges. In addition, the datalink capability and the advanced helmet mounted display will provide the pilot with superior situational awareness, enhancing safety and enabling the pilot to maximise the potential of modern munitions. The upgrade programme enhances the capabilities of the RSAF's fighter fleet and ensures that Singapore's defence and security needs are met.

The upgrade for the RSAF's F-16 fighter aircraft will commence from 2016 and will be conducted in phases. It is expected to take place over five to six years.
