Err.... They look like mongolian gerbs? .......

No they dont, they look a freakload different. And their coats are darn soft, like chinchilla's fur.

2.1 What's a Duprasi?

The Duprasi (Pachyuromys duprasis) is a small insectivorous rodent from the northern Sahara desert. Duprasi are 3-4" in length, with a short (2") but thick tail in which excess fat and water is stored, leading to the Duprasi's alternative name as a "Fat Tail Gerbil." The tail is mostly bare, with a few guard hairs. Although both are gerbils (ie, part of the family Gerbillinae), Duprasi are not closely related to the Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) that is commonly kept as a pet. Duprasi have a very soft and fluffy coat, similar in texture to that of a Chinchilla. Colors are a tan to grey with black ticking and a white underbelly. They are chunky in build with a lot of fat on the body, this with the puffy fur makes them appear larger than they are. The snout is somewhat pointed with cat-like whiskers. IMHO, they are close in size and appearance to some dwarf hamsters, but with the distinctive tail and the oval eyes of a gerbil rather than the round eyes of a hamster.

Of course they're not 100% to look like a Mongolian gerbs. Just that they share some of the similarities. They are slightly larger than Mongolian, with shorter legs, a fat tail (remind me of geckoes). And it comes with a colour so far. And for the price tag like that, I don't think i'll be getting one... laugh.gif

Are you so sure? biggrin.gif

Though I do read that online on some sites, my fat tails are very curious and quite active. They are aggressive towards each other though, and should never be kept together. They fight a lot worse than syrians.

I currently have 5 baby duprasis, and 8 adults. One thing about them is that they tend to nip. Pokey in the picture is the only one that doesn't. So these 5 babies are going to be handled from an early stage so they can be tamed.

Wow, you manage to breed them? I heard they are harder to breed than mongoliang erbils..hence the hefty price tag.

Well, you're missing out on keeping these cute fat tail critters.

YES, they ARE SO HARD TO BREED! This is my first successful litter.

Here's Penny! She's famous for freezing in your hands.

Hey... future potential gerbil owner here. I wanna ask a few questions.

1st, compared to non aggresive hams such as WW, how often do you get bitten by them?
2nd How often do you need to clean their habitat if lets say you put them in a 2ft tank?
3rd Obviously... their smell.... compared to hamsters? which has more smell? =S

any other useful info will be appreciated. Thank you.

1. Never
2. Depends on the number of gerbils you are keeping. 2 gerbils can last more than a month.
3. Obviously hamsters.

O.o Really hamsters stink more? Then I'm gonna get a gerbil! Wahahah.. need to wait a while first... for my new hamster to settle down. Don't wanna bug my parents for too many new pets at one shot.

Gerbils must be kept in pairs at least. If you want your bedding to last longer, it also depends how much bedding put in, cant expect it to last more than a month if you put 1 inch of shavings. Usually I change shavings in my 2 feet tank with 2 gerbils every 3 weeks... with around 3 inches of shavings each time.

About the biting part, it depends where you get your gerbils from. Breeders who dont handle their gerbils from young, and some petshops sell gerbils who are very nervous and do bite. Wherever you decide to get your gerbils from, better handle them and make sure they dont bite before you bring them home.

For me, it really does depend. For some reason, my 2 mongolian gerbils soil the bedding faster than most of my small pets.
