Hi awpy1328,

Sorry newbie here about getting a job in SG also. May I ask we should get a "Work Permit" from the employer then may start work rite? Do we need to apply at our own? Or Employer will do it for us? Cause I m curious about those jobs indicating. Only SPR or PR can apply.

Please advise,
Thanks

If you just start work in singapore( first job) , you need to apply work permit/S pass/EP to be legally work in Singapore. Normally you just give them the require document and the recruit agent or company will do everything for you. However, some company require you to do your own ( less cases).

you can apply PR status after you working sometime in singapore if you are holding S pass or EP but not work permit. Thats y always try go for at least S pass or EP if you have the qualification .

if you are planning to come to singapore, pls make sure you agree with the room rental price first. common room is SGD550 now.
http://hdbflat.blogspot.com
http://flatsdb.com
If your offer is around SGD2500 to SGD3000, u better think thrice. Plus the food here is around same price as Malaysia.
*
Sorry, but do you really in Singapore or just get the facts from internet or somewhere else? The rental price is definetely raise a lot compare last time but its not that high as you stated.
There is still a lot acceptable price range for a common room as eg 300( quite hard), 400( with aircond). I even got friends just get a Master bedroom with price 600 ( aircond). Of course it still depends to the location of the unit as well.

I dun agree the food is same price as Malaysia. Malaysia is too big thus we hardly compare but if you compare with KL, PJ. The food definitely is cheaper in terms of dollar to dollar( no convertion). You can still find a lot of food cost around sgd2.50-3 at most hawker center( which just raise from sgd2).

If your offer is around 2500, let say you do not have any commitment in Malaysia. your monthly expenses can be like SGD1k( accomodation+ food+ transport+ some outing with fren)
So, you can save like 1.5k.
I do not think you can save that much if you are earning RM2.5k in Malaysia.

I dun think the average rental of a common room is 550 that high yet.
Almost all of my friends able to get a common room between 300-400 only. I have 1 friends even get a masterroom(aircond) with 550 only. Other master bedroom price i know is around 600-650.
There is a lot of owner asking high rental but there is a lot asking reasonable price as well.

It depends on the area (whether close to LRT station) and the class of the apartment. One of my friend also getting cheaper rate but she stay in a low class flat.
*
Sorry but may I know what you mean by the class of the apartment over here? We are talking about the rental of the common room of the HDB flat.
As I know there is only different of HDB flat, private HDB flat, private apartment/Condominium. The rental of private apartment room is definitely much higher which can hit 800-1k per room. I do not know there is a different of the low class or high class flat in Singapore. Mind to share how to differentiate it?
And yes all the room rental rate I mention is quite near to MRT.

Usually ppl change money in singapore and go over to JB to bank in. Tax rate is at 18%.
*
Tax rate is not 18%. If you are residing/working in Singapore for less than 183 days in a year, you will be tax as non resident group on 15% of your income. However, if you work/reside more than 183 days in a year, you will be in tax resident group and tax calculation will be calculate base on tables and its around 3%-8% depends your income. For more details you can refer to http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page01.aspx?id=88

You can always go money changer/remittance services to transfer money back to malaysia bank. Usually the charges is like SGD10 per transaction. Bank always will have a higher transaction fee.

using money changer to do remittance only cost u SGD10, it much safer than you carry along all the way.
Even kena lou lap one time the money you lost already can remit more than 20 times( if you bring SGD200 only, imagine u are bring more money).

QUOTE(yrh0413 @ May 9 2008, 07:23 PM)
guys, I got a job offer at Singapore and I'm going to start working next month. some serious questions here:

1. How to search for rooms? I'll be there with my girlfriend, and we prefer either 2 common rooms in the same house or rent the entire unit that comes with 2 rooms. Location: Bedok. Anyone knows how should I start searching and what's the current price range?

2. Let's say I was offered SGD3000. What is the net pay? Do we have to deduct EPF kindda thinggy? If yes, what is my final take-home pay?

3. I heard that rentals in Singapore is going to be reduced soon. Is this true?
*
1. You can try www.sg-house.com or www.efair.sg, there is rental section over there. but most is through agent which u need to pay half month rental to agent as commision. Nowadays is very hard to get a room without agent especially you are not in Singapore currently. A Common room is around 400-600 for safety range. If you plan to get 1 whole unit with 2 bedroom will mostly cost around 1500-2000 per month. Not sure about Bedok market

2. You will take home 3000 nett for every month until you get PR status. However you need keep some for your next year income tax declaration.

3. Nope, so far no reduce sign at all but it become more stable instead of keep rising on last year.

Hope it help

Nope, because you will still not enjoy those Singaporean citizen benefit.

PS: you do not have to serve national services as well if you first generation of PR.

if you have the right experience they need, they will pay higher, even higher than singaporean. Don't always think that Malaysian are being exploit here. Just that you have to know, Singapore's salary is lower compare to Malaysia.
*
Its depends field and position and knowledge you have. Some is always lower and some is higher. so you can't say average singapore salary is lower than malaysia.

i got an offer for contract sg IT job which through the agent. The agent will be negotiating the salary & benefits behalf of me.

i would like to know whether the higher salary package i got better for the agent or lower the better?

Do my salary will be lowering down due to through agent?
*
It depends heavily on how is your contract.
If you are outsourding to the company under the agent account, its not necessarily the higher salary they pay to agent will go to you, the agent might press your salary even the company pay to them quite high.

If you are under direct contract of the company and agent just help to do the recommendation and documentation, they will try negotiate for you as the higher they negotiate for you the higher commission they can get.

Do a search of this topic, but lots of links to websites have been posted for finding jobs, finding accomodation, finding girlfriends...
You can actually apply for PR anytime you want. That's because even people who don't work in Singapore can apply for PR. They can just walk into a Singapore embassy to get a form and send it in. Whether they give you PR or not is a totally different issue, but there's nothing to stop you from applying.

As for employment pass and work permit, I think you can't apply for one if you haven't found a job in Singapore. They won't issue you a pass or permit so that you can go looking for work.

The normal route is to find a job first with a company operating in Singapore, that is willing to go to the trouble of helping you get a work permit or employment pass. Most companies in Singapore already do that on a regular basis anyway. If they give you the excuse that they only hire Singaporeans and PR, it's most probably not because they don't want to hire Malaysians or foreigners... but just that they don't want to hire you.
*
Just to add:All company have the quota base on their business environment. So sometime they only can get Singaporean or SPR due to that restriction set by sg government.

FYI, normally PR is not deducted 20% on the first year, there is 3 kind of rate and normally employer practice graduated rate which is

1) First Year, 5%
2) Second Year 15%
3) Third Year 20%.

http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/Employers/Gen-Info...n-Rates-SPR.htm

If you are earning 2000, in msia you take back home with 1780, even you pay 20% in sg will be like 1600 and is only 180 different. With the power of sg currency, actually you still have more buying power.

20% is ceiling on 4500. Mean as long as you earn more than 4500, the CPF you pay is only 900. So once you get more than 4500, you will have more cash on hand.

Is it possible to live with S$600 a month? a room would have cost you 400-500 a month already isn't it?
*
Why not, its totally up to individual.
There is always option to share room, travel back JB, rent a room with no air cond, rent a room far from MRT, rent a room near office.
600 have 600 way of living style, 1500 have 1500 living style. Just that nowadays a lot ppl mistaken luxury as their basic needs.

- PLEASE DON’T EVER GO FOR PREPAID. Prepaid users are charged for incoming calls, and you have to pay a fee everyday just to enjoy free incoming calls. I subscribed Singtel prepaid in the 1st week… used up the $10 credit in just 3 days. Crappy!

You are wrong in someways. If you do not mind about the 3G ( video call),
prepaid is always the best way to go. You used up $10 credit in 3 days because you are not familiar with it.
FYI, singtel have 1 hot100 which is you pay 28 dollar, you get 100 dollar local call( 16 cents peak hour, 8 cents non-peak), 28 dollar outstation call with IDD and free incoming call. This account is separate from your main account which you need top up every 50 days to make sure your balance is not void.
( main account can be active without top up for 6 month)
Previously they charge on incoming call but now its free due to competition a 28 dollar package from starhub.
you do not have to pay 5 dollar for caller ID as well as postpaid plan will charge you from third month onwards.
so whatever plan you subscribe for postpaid, after 3 month you will need to pay package price+ $5 + GST.

totally agree that singapore is a boring country.
malaysia supposedly not so boring, but can't go anywhere because scare of robber.
Yeah, Msia should be more fun but now the is more tension everytime you go out. Need keep remind yourself about snatch thief, robber. At the end, going out is no longer fun and its better stay at home.
At least you can walk safely in Singapore without worrying about snatch thief.
