Hi guys, my 3 years+ Asus laptop died last week, was looking at Alienware 15 R2 now, below is the spec I thinking to get:

Alienware 15
Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ (Quad-Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 220-nits Display
8GB Dual Channel DDR4 2133MHz (4GBx2)
256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5
3Yr ProSupport: Next Business Day Onsite Service W/Accidental Damage

Not going to upgrade the RAM as budget is tight. Any opinion or advices? May I know so far got any other users facing weird issues with Alienware 15 R2?

ALIENWARE A17FHD-728124G-W8 GAMING Laptop (Core I7-4720HQ / 8GB / 256GB + 1TB / GTX 980M / Win 8.1)

the GTX 980m is probably 4gb version . Is there big performance different compared to 8gb version ? hmm.gif

possible options:

1. ram - 2x 8gb ddr3 ram;
2. os drive - 1x msata ssd;
3. data drive - existing hdd?;
4. additional data drive - the dvdrom can be replaced with hdd caddy so that you can add another hdd there.

not bad.

imo 4gb is ok. there is not much performance difference if games you play need less than 4gb vram.

For ram, get value ram. It's about myr 125.00 each only. Don't need to get performance ram. It's like no difference compared to stock/value ram in laptops.

For msata ssd, crucial / micron m550 msata ssd in garage sales section is cheap (i think it's like 256gb at myr 300) You should also check out lelong or other places for good deals.

guys my m15x alienware laptop motherboard had overheated and the cost of repairing is RM350. I need some advice whether to repair or change a new PC. Firstly I didnt want to repair it is because I'm afraid the issue of overheating will come back after sometimes, and the service is only providing me 3 month of warranty.

if it's from dell, i guess it should be good, and the price is kind of cheap. unless you really wanna go for new laptops, it's still a cheaper option to fix it.

My suggestion would be to find out what is causing the over heating?, the obvious would be the processor or the GPU then check on the thermal paste situation on them and also the cooling fans whether they are clean and the rpm are good. Clean the heat sinks too. If still the problem persists. It is wise to rather buy a new motherboard from taobao.com. It might cost the same as getting your existing motherboard repaired.
