Hi,

Would it be worthwhile or make sense to upgrade my current rig?

i5-2300 2.8 ghz
ASUStek P8H67-M LE
8 Gb DDR3 1333 Mhz
Ati Radeon HD5870 1 Gb
Samsung 1Tb sata hdd
Not so sure about psu. should be 500W

I wanna play the latest games at least smoothly maybe at medium settings.

If not worthwhile, what can i get at about 3k for rig only?

Thanks

Added the entry level of Skylake while retaining other hardware.

Intel Core i5 6400 - RM 829
Gigabyte H170 Gaming 3 - RM 559
Kingston HyperX Fury 8GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM - RM 289
Gainward GTX750 1GB GDDR5 - RM 439
WD Blue 500GB HDD - RM 180
FSP Hexa+ 550W - RM 169
Thermaltake Versa H25 - RM 130

Total: RM 2595 (Techview price inclusive of GST)

Haswell can serve you well with your requirements actually, so no need to spend another RM 500 just to get Skylake due to the price of Skylake mobo (DDR4 based) is very expensive. You can think of switching back to DDR3 based Skylake but there are reports saying DDR3 (1.5V and 1.65V) RAM will damage the memory controller due to high voltage so it is not recommended until a fix is issued.

HD 5870 is equivalent to R7 260X so you will end up with low-med settings in latest games.

As for CPU, 2nd gen i5 is still capable to run latest games (not those CPU intensive games) so I will go for GPU upgrade instead.

What is your budget for the upgrade (not getting a new rig)?

If you want to know what you can get with 3k, then here you go (RAM, HDD and case reuse).

Intel Core i5 4460 - RM 815
ASRock B85M-HDS - RM 299
Palit GTX970 4GB GDDR5 Reference - RM 1399
FSP Hexa+ 550W - RM 199

Total: RM 2712 (Idealtech price inclusive of GST)

You can remove the PSU if your current PSU is good enough to run GTX970, but I need your exact PSU model to determine whether it can run or not.

Remove monitor if not needed and use the money to get a better mobo/i5 or completely switch to Skylake (might cost more).

can i ask what's the difference between Asus H81M-K and MSI H81M-P33?

also what kind of cpu cooling do you recommend with this setup?

Difference is small since both are low end Haswell chipset (H81), most probably Asus one has USB 3.0 header for your chassis USB 3.0 front panel support.

Stock cooler which comes with the processor is enough, no need to spend money on aftermarket cooler.

yeah. some work out of the box without doing injection or changing the kernel etc etc.
but it seems like the performance different is quite big there. i guess it's worth the hassle to get the r9 270 and save the 50 bucks. tongue.gif
i checked my psu again yesterday it is actually a fsp 500watt. but they do write 'up to 550watt'.
is it sufficient for the r9 270?

My PSU is silverstone 500W. Would the 2nd gen i5 bottleneck the gtx970? Er, i think budget for upgrade about 1.5-1.7k. So means its still a big upgrade if i just swap out the gpu (provided i dont need to change psu)? Witcher 3, gta 5 CPU intensive??
