Hey guys,

My 2yr old Lenovo Y400 has been serving me well but since January it's been experiencing random crashes especially while gaming.

I'm a casual gamer and the games I played the most are usually Dota2 and GTA4. Before any of these crashes happen, I experience a stuttering/lag gameplay (even when minimized to desktop, sounds also stutter when this happens) for a few times, then the crashes start happening.

Initially it only crashes when I'm in the 2nd or 3rd game of Dota2, but it started to happen more frequently to the extend of only 30 seconds into the game. Currently I'm also experiencing random crashes while doing normal web browsing and surfing /k.

I have run a stress test on it and this is the result of the maximum temperature:
Intel i7 Quad-core: Reaches average maximum temperature of 85C
Nvidia GT 750M: Reaches maximum temperature of 95C

It achieves this temperature without crashing, I stopped the test to prevent frying the hardware lol.

This is the reading from HWMonitor prior to the crash:
Intel i7 Quad-core: Average temperature of 75C
Nvidia GT 750M: Average temperature of 68C

and it crashes without any warning? rclxub.gif

Now it's starting to crash while normal web browsing (rarely) with a reading of:
Intel i7 Quad-core: Average temperature of 58C
Nvidia GT 750M: Average temperature of 42C

The problem is these crashes occur randomly and there's no way to routinely recreate it. I've sent it to my retailer for checkup but he said he can't find the issue? cry.gif

Anyways I've called Lenovo Support regarding this issue and they asked me to send it to an Authorized Lenovo Service Centre and its a possible thermal/ motherboard issue. Just wondering if anyone else faced this issue before? It's so frustrating that it's driving me crazy vmad.gif Makes me wanna toss this so called "budget gaming laptop" out the window and get a macbook because #AppleMasterRace

clean your heatsink, reapply thermal paste.
go youtube search for guide.

the stuttering/lag that you experience is mainly due to overheat and your cpu/gc throttle down the speed

i recently got an very old dell laptop, just youtubing can reach 90c. after clean it now max 50c

trade in + 4000 for a laptop which is having the same GPU as his current laptop.
might as well add in 300 more without trade-in to get a new Illegear with GTX 960M instead of that XPS's 750m doh.gif

why would you want to trade-in?

trade-in + 4000 = a xps with gt750m
vs
no trade-in + 4300 = illegear with gtx 960m

in other words, who in the right mind would trade-in a laptop for just 300 bucks to get another laptop of roughly the same spec (gt750m) after adding another 4000?
good luck in finding a fool like that.

once again, why would you want to take a trade-in for a totally inferior product?
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-960M-vs-GeForce-GT-750M
comparing GT750M (not even a GTX) which is already in his 2year old Lenovo Y400 and also the XPS vs a totally superior GTX960M from Illegear (3.6k for 960M in Y50 etc).
he can get better products without even needing to trade-in (which is a net-loss for him). no idea how you would think trade-in as a net-gain from the way you are selling it

if you still can't comprehend the logic behind this, then I got nothing to say rclxub.gif

I think the problem is.. Since you already know TS is not going for trade in option, why do you offer him in the first place and why do you offer him a bad trade-in option. I think evo is not arguing whether TS should trade in or not, he is arguing why you offer a bad trade in option to TS initially.

No.. That is not the point. He is arguing WHY YOU OFFER A BAD TRADE IN DEAL in the first place. The problem doesn't lies in "TS want to trade in or not" or "I offer him trade in cause I dono TS don't want" etc.
It lies in "why you offer a bad trade in option to TS".
But if you still don't get it, I also quite speechless already.

P.S: 750m is obviously not a choice in here IMO, will you spend so much to get an old gpu ? Obviously you will get the new one right ? 750m can play dota 2, but can it play GTA V or BF4 at a decent rate like 960m ? Dota 2 is more on cpu side tho

I assume now you get what evo is arguing about right ? So shouldn't you told/justify to him why you offer that in the first place ? From your previous argument you're "avoiding" the direct and straight forward question. I'm not here to argue whether it is worth the price or not, I'm just clarifying to you what evo asked you since you can't get what he meant after 3 posts sweat.gif

P.S: I think MSI GE62 4k screen is still cheaper tho sweat.gif (but non touch)

To be honest I lol-ed at your metaphor. lol
I think sometime you tend to avoid the direct yet simple question. I still don't get why you don't want to clarify to evo on why you offer the trade in, Eg: it is a qhd 16gb laptop etc etc. You just keep arguing the TS is not interested. If it is me, I would reply like : "Why I offer 4k + trade in is because it is a qhd touch screen + 16gb ram laptop etc etc, but since the TS is not interested so no point to go any further."

2k is not much different leap from fhd, 4k is the one which have significant different.

Please do remember, not all people have money power especially current economy condition..

TS, best solution is repaste the thermal paste. It saves you bucks instead of a new laptop. Why change something that is not broken? smile.gif

actually how long is your warranty? if under warranty, and you dont need it on a daily basis, send it, have them fix it for you.I suspect this might also have something to do with your GPU driver, or even anything that you have recently installed( excluding games, but might be some software that comes with games though ) clashing with any background running app. Whenever stuffs like this happen, try using driver sweep and install back the driver that you first ran your laptop with. Secondly, about repasting the laptop, it also depends on what thermal paste you will be replacing them with. If you are replacing them with some random budget cooler master paste, I dont think it would help a lot. Try using diamond IC if u really want to have your laptop last longer. It helps a lot.

alternatively, instead of throwing your money into #AppleMasterRace, try what other forumer already recommended, illegear. Even with 860M i think the GPU is also better than your current one, and the cooling is way better than most the laptops out there as well.

Ending next month but the service center say can extend according to purchase date if provide proof of purchase so gonna ask my retailer to check records and re-issue receipt cuz my receipt already throw together with the box.. sweat.gif This is my only laptop/pc so its quite important to me.. cry.gif

I updated all drivers and bios already.. and used Lenovo Recovery to reformat but still got problem.. sad.gif

Any shop to recommend to buy a thermal paste? But currently don't dare to apply it myself cuz scared void warranty..

I usually use my laptop to edit videos, microsoft office, surf web and some casual gaming, so don't really need a gaming rig.. I prefer Macbook cuz of their OSX and priority on entertainment software (GarageBand and iMovie).

UPDATE: So I sent my laptop to a Lenovo Service Center already. The technician told me that this model is facing alot of issue due to bad engineering of cooling system doh.gif He told me that laptops generally should be around 50C but my laptop heats up to 60C even when left idle so it might be a thermal issue after all.. He said my laptop's problem is under warranty but it will take minimum 3 weeks to a month due to the warranty claim procedure of Lenovo with no ETA mad.gif He promised to update me weekly regarding the status so hope everything goes well (not going to expect him to do so anyway laugh.gif )

But an important thing to take note, he notified me that my laptop hinge on both side is damaged, with both screws missing, 1 gear missing and another gear dislocated. I asked my retailer and they said they have not tampered with the laptop nor damaged the laptop in any way while it was with them as it was under warranty.. So i suspect it was damaged before it was even purchased by me.. The technician said that external damage will not be covered under warranty.. It's not a big issue but I'm worried with extended use it might damage my screen cable and Lenovo OneKey recovery button located near it, causing my laptop to have a malfunction screen and OneKey button.. I have uploaded the pictures for any Lyn forumners reference.. Anyone that has the same model as me please do check your laptop now to see if the screws on both side are intact and tightly screwed (loosely screwed but intact is an indication of it being broken). This kind of defect might not be caused by you but it is not covered under warranty.. so any dispute will have to be with your retailer or Lenovo itself if you purchase it directly from them..

A brief google search about this issue turns up with alot of similar problems from Lenovo forums itself.. I left some links here for reference regarding this hinge problem...

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and...en/td-p/1587738
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and...ty/td-p/1761609

Not only that, he said my laptop might be tempered by someone and therefore caused the hinge screw hole to be broken. He showed me the Lenovo sticker is still intact which means my laptop has not been tempered with, but it was poorly paste and exposed the screw so it can be unscrewed without damaging the warranty sticker. I told him it's not my problem that Lenovo itself paste the sticker poorly that is making my warranty claim difficult but he told me there is nothing he can do about it.. and my warranty might be void if there is proof that my laptop has indeed been tampered with causing my crashing issue to be void of warranty and subject to a fixing fee (nothing to worry about unless my retailer lied to me about not touching the hardware, which I will bring this dispute to them).

Will update you guys on my status and trying my best to reply everyone promptly smile.gif on a side note can anyone recommend any laptop service center that does thermal paste reapplying and cleaning of the heat sink around Klang Valley? Currently using an old HP Compaq Presario CQ40 and it warms up to around 75C even when left idle.. and goes up to 105C before throttling down performance to cool it back to 95C while playing Dota2 at the most minimum graphic settings..

Hi TS, can I know which SC u sent your laptop? Yes this model indeed had bad cooling system since lenovo release this model and a lot of bad reviews of the cooling system. Even u go to reapply thermal paste and cleaning up the whole laptop, its still unable to solve your problems, when compared your laptop with mine, your max temperature still under "safe" level. I've assume the root isn't from your thermal issue but since you had sent your laptop to SC, you can just request them to reapply. Keep in mind SC only will use some budget normal thermal paste, it not really have any significant temperature reduces. IMO, your laptop 60'c at idle is quite normal for this model, mine went to 70'c still working well.

IMO, the SC claimed to take minimum 3 weeks to a month to repairs/services is really ridiculous for me. I had sent my laptop(y400) to 2 SCs in a month. First time is unable to power on, sent to Plaza Berjaya SC, take 7 days repair. Second time due to the RAM slot problem cause the laptop unexpected shutdowns, sent to Seremban SC, take only 5 days to repair. Even when i asked the stuff at Plaza Berjaya about ETA he claimed only need around 5 working days to done the work, he said I can always call the SC ask about the progress if I want to push them.

About the hinge issues and screws missing I think is DOA. Did u had checked the laptop completely when u purchase the laptop? BTW last time there is a forumer also said about his hinge cracked issues. You can find it out at Lenovo related thread I can't remember which thread and how long ago.

if you main reason is video editing, then indeed there's a point for going MAC, but problem is how much would u be paying for it? As I recall a MAC with a decent graphic card would easily cost 5k

Some technicians are honest about the flaws etc when u send in to service. If you service gonna take 3 weeks to a month, normally it means you're sending in to a smaller SC, and they send your laptop to their main SC to repair. Best to just ask them for the main SC near your area, go there yourself and repair it. Last time my Asus tablet took only 3 days to fix a main board problem, when the sunway pyramid branch says 2-3 weeks time.

Honestly cleaning heatsink and repasting is something u can easily do, just google the disassemble video of your laptop, be very careful and follow exact instructions and you'll be safe. just research around what's the best thermal paste, have 4 hours to just slowly do everything, and enjoy your laptop with much cooler temp biggrin.gif

3 weeks to a month? wish you luck bro... Y400 is known for heating issue and im surprise that the technician being that honest and tell you "due to bad engineering of cooling system"  sweat.gif

btw i recalled there is one thread about lenovo quote for 1k+ to fix the hinge  hmm.gif

Yea it's gonna be Hell on Earth for me.. sad.gif Yeah he's actually quite honest and when another customer asked him about which laptop is the best in terms of quality (he was entertaining another customer at the same time about her faulty Thinkpad screen) and he said Apple Macbook biggrin.gif sweat.gif Walao so exp.. shocking.gif cry.gif

*
I sent to the one in Puchong.. I should have did some research before buying.. I only bought it cause it was a great bargain.. regret now sad.gif They say they will do it as a standard procedure blink.gif Wah seems that my laptop's thermal issue is still okay.. sweat.gif Wah so fast? He said the same to me too about calling to ask about the progress.. and that it takes 3 weeks to a month because they don't know what's causing the crash and need time to determine what's the issue, and then submit a warranty claim to Lenovo HQ, and waiting for the specific part to be delivered to them and so on...

DOA = Damaged on Arrival? I was excited that time and didn't bother much as it seems new.. so didn't really expect 2 small screws to be missing.. Is he the one that commented below?

if you main reason is video editing, then indeed there's a point for going MAC, but problem is how much would u be paying for it?

*
Yea budget is currently tight so I guess I will have to deal with this y400 for now.. blush.gif Yup their service centre seems small as it is a small office area on the upper floor of the shop lots. But I already submit it to them, so I guess all I can do now is wait.. cry.gif

Okay but currently don't dare to do anything with this old laptop as it is my only laptop left with me that is working.. blush.gif If this one dies I'm gonna live a barbarian life for at least a month.. tongue.gif

850M is good, but it's running DDR3 or GDDR3 so bear in mind that it will be bottlenecked by memory speed when you're running at full HD resolution. As i recall there's a 850M with GDDR5 as well, but it's harder to find. For the case, if the laptop is not runnig full HD, just the dell tru life resolution, then this should be a very decent gaming machine.

so far all of the 850m over here are DDR3 sadly which is not worth the price as the difference between DDR3 and DDR5 is too significant imho

the consequence is that if you are playing in FHD resolution, and havnig high texture, you reach a point where your performance would be rather terrible, your fps will be staying at a certain number and it cant go much higher even if you overclock your GPU core clock, or drop some of the shading settings, because your memory is not capable of sending that much data fast enough to your screen. On scenario like this, you can still opt to overclock your vRam memory speed to push the bandwidth higher, but it would not help much against the much faster tech like GDDR5

in short, if you wanna game on FHD, always prioritize GDDR5 over GDDR3.

Means even if your GPU can handle but the transfer rate is capped so no point going for higher specs GPU if GDDR3 compare to GDDR5? blink.gif Thanks for the ajaran sifu notworthy.gif

UPDATE 2

Initially feeling lazy to post an update regarding this issue, but this may help to be a future reference for people who faced similiar problems and wanting to know feedback regarding this issue. So here it goes.

During the duration of repair, I have called the service centre approximately 5 times, each time asking for the status of progress regarding the repair. Here are the details regarding each call:

Call 1: Requested additional parts from Lenovo HQ after diagnosis of the problem, awaiting reply.
Call 2: Requested replacement of motherboard approved from HQ, pending arrival of parts, ETA the same week.
Call 3: Replacement motherboard unit is faulty, unable to turn on laptop, 2nd request from HQ for new motherboard, again ETA the same week.
Call 4: 2nd Replacement motherboard also faulty, causing BSOD for unknown reasons after certain period of time, request from HQ for new motherboard, no ETA.
Call 5: ETA of new motherboard by the same week. (Specifically requested it to be done by the following week as my old HP laptop is having issues)

A week after the fifth call, they called and notified me that my laptop is ready for collection (June 11), which makes the whole duration of repair 2 months, a month longer than expected (may be absurd for some as typical laptop repairs only take about a week or so). Went for collection, checked for any damages, and left after signage of documents. The staff there handled the situation well with a smile and explained everything patiently.

However, the 4 little lightbulbs which indicate Power, Battery, Disabled Mousepad, and Caps Lock seems to be dimmer than usual, although not an issue but deserves to be pointed out.

IMO, I dare not falsely accuse the Lenovo Service Centre for making up excuses for the delay of my laptop repair, but the reasons given in all 5 calls seem oddly suspicious to me as it sounded as if they are making up excuses for the delay of the laptop. Therefore, my advise to anyone whom is dealing with Lenovo Service Centres to strictly request the laptop to be done in the shortest time possible, thus making it seem urgent and they might provide you with a speedier service.

Anyways, thank you so much for everyone who has been helping me through this, and I already bought a Macbook during the wait, thus making it bearable for me. biggrin.gif

It did fixed the problem as I did not experience any random crashes or restart during gaming, but my laptop went kaput after 2 months while playing NFS so now it's just sitting there collecting dust lol.

hi tumpang thread.

my lenovo y40 is about 1 year 2 months old.

after fully charge and shut down, when i turn on the laptop again it will shows full battery. However, after like 3-5 mins it will auto shut down with no warning and the battery indicator is blinking orange. I need to plug in power source only can turn on again.

Battery issue or software issue? how to diagnose?

P/S the battery is internal build.

Just download something like HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) and launch it. Look under the battery section and see what is the wear level.

A high number would indicate your battery is close to death.

Thanks.

It shows 16% wear level.

------
last night charged till 100% and shut down. then try turn it on again (shows 100%) without power plug. After few mins the screen just black out and orange blink again at battery LED notification.

plug in power only can turn on and it show 4% left. Let it charge to about 35% then suddenly it shows 100% again. Then unplug power so far still okay after 20 mins. Didnt auto shut down (screen turn black).

So strange. it happens only if i boot up pc without power plug.

16% isn't a bad battery. Could be a problem with your laptop charging the battery or the calibration is seriously off. You can download the lenovo power management tools, there should be a function in there to re-calibrate your battery. Try that and see if it helps.

I think the new Lenovo batteries come with a chip in it for smart charging. That could cause problems too. I remember seeing something similar in a Lenovo T430.
