I have done a rough calculation as below when I have a guess at my house. The amount is roughly there if my calculation is correct as below.

Smart home sifu. Want to ask some solution.

Let say a house far away and want to monitor, control some light or device. Example to cctv,  light ON/OFF and alarm for a basic function. But don't have network.

What is the best solution?

I m thinking of using a GSM as a network to control than wifi to all the device in the house? So Sonoff for device, wifi cctv etc.

Is there a GSM router ? Possible ?

Equipment lifetime is not depend on the solar energy. Solar energy is only provide the supply. The rest is depend on the equipment quality.

But 1 thing for sure is the equipment have less device to convert the voltage and doesn't require stabilize. That reduce the equipment cost and longer lifetime.

But the setup cost is expensive.

Take for example setting up a remote control above.

Equipment need and consumption

1) router/modem - 2A
2) Network cctv - 0.5A
3) Sonoff 4channel  - 0.5A
4) Led Light 12w  - 1A

All run on 12V, 24hr accept the Led light which is 12hr. Total consumption around 1.1kw for a day.

Calculate the solar supply require is 

1) battery of 232Ahr  - RM2.4k
2) 300watt panel or 3x 100watt panel. - RM2.1k
3) 25A charger controller. - RM500
4) misc - RM500.

Just the solar system is already cost RM5.5k.

would it make sense for me to ditch the mi smart home hub for smart things instead? would the existing temp sensor/smart plug/occupancy sensor and door sensor work with the smart things?

It's actually easier than it sounds. Once you add gateway hub into home assistant, all the aqara sensors/switch connected will be listed.
Then can start customize automation with google assistant

With the sonoff wifi wall switch, you can expand the wifi signal

Prepare to change router liau la. Already sot sot. Coming will be more problem.

I have been manage my server network in home for 10yrs. Makesure it run 7/11. Deal with all this trouble of router go crazy, spoil, lightning damage, server kong, offline, speed slow, .. bla bla bla.

So you see tired or not. 

That is the reason why I don't fully go home automation.

Somemore now many device have to cloud on foreigner country to work. (Really don't understand why need it) 1 day hijack my home and have to camp outside.

Can use custom firmware like ddwrt/openwrt to mimic those mesh feature?
Or it's exclusive for expensive routers like google wifi?
