I was looking for rpi4 for my HA... till I want to add Frigate with about 8 cameras...and now I'm looking for a mini desktop or nuc equivalent to host HA + Frigate (future with coral).
Anyone got good deal or has installed HA with refurbished mini desktops?
Just get your old pc (if you have) installed with docker, then you can use docker to run firgate and HA containers.
my environment setup (a bit complicated but you don't have to use my setup)
3 x Ubuntu Server master nodes (1 x86 PC + 2 ARM Single Board Computers) running on Rancher K3S kubernetes cluster Longhorn storage to mirror container persistent volumes between 2 x Ubuntu Server master nodes Home Assistant containers running on K3S cluster Frigate runs on docker container with Coral M.2 PCIe as AI image recognition accelerator Nginx load balancer ingress engine to handle internet access to HA in K3S cluster Cert-manager to mange my HA SSL certificate using duckdns.org free dynamic DNS
Neutral wire is optional. But iinm most smart switch nowadays also dont require neutral wire. Our light switch by default also without neutral wire
you cannot compare smart switch with light switch, normal light switch is just a simple on-off passive device, whereas smart switch is active device requires power to control on-off.
When a device is active device, it requires electrical power, it needs a close loop, without neutral line and only live wire, how to achieve close loop? this is why it requires capacitor to achieve it.
So my understanding is that Zigbee 3.0 is meant to be universal across brands so no more closed ecosystems i.e. you can pair a tuya switch to an Aqara gateway.
Has anyone tried this? Can you pair an Aqara/Mi Zigbee 3.0 hub with a non-3.0 Tuya smart switch? Will that work or do both hub and peripheral need to be Zigbee 3.0?
Zigbee compatibility between vendors is not good, almost impossible for multiple vendors work together to make their own devices compatible to each other.
Matter is designed to make all future IoT devices to work together.
Thread is another protocol similar to zigbee but based on IP, it intends to replace zigbee/z-wave due to standardization and multiple vendors support
For controlling higher power devices, u can wire the smart switch to 'contactor'. Its function like a relay. Smart switch power the relay, the relay power the device (ex: pump/heater)
Im going to power my water pump this way because the switch is upstairs. (Currently need to go up to switch on pump) With smart switch can power from anywhere (app or HA interface downstairs)
Smart relay does not power the device (pump/heater), it creates connection from the power source to the device, hence, it can be used for controlling high power appliances.
sonoff is pretty good at this area, they have smart relay supports 20A current, good for water heater, and it is easily integrate with Home Assistant.
I have total 4 switches to be replaced with wifi switch. 1st and 2nd switch controlled by own MCB individually (so i assume it is 2 circuits there). 3rd and 4th switch i can see live cable is looped behind the original switch and it is another MCB to control both switches. I am wondering why 1st and 2nd switch is ok at the beginning . But when i install 3rd switch, it suddenly trips 1st switch MCB and cannot ON back the MCB again. 2nd and 3rd wifi switch are working fine. Now i dont dare to install 4th wifi switch....haha. My house is single phase. I loop the neutral from aircond switch.
MCB tripped means current overloaded or short circuit, need to check the L/N/E wires whether or not it is shorted.
The relay does not support homekit, as such, in order to use home app, it must be homekit device
You can explore Home Assistant with homekit feature, all home assistant devices can be exposed to iOS homekit as homekit device.
I have sonoff inching ewelink device controlling autogate and managed by home assistant and I exposed it as homekit device, I use my iPhone shortcut to execute autogate open/close through homekit autogate device
The Terncy Smart Module I have purchased is compatible with HomeKit. Just not sure how I should wire it up.
Your terncy smart module is not suitable for your autogate controller
as you can see in your autogate board wiring diagram, "P.SW normal" is to open/close indoor (no idea why the autogate got such indoor and outdoor)
The physical switch that connect to "P.SW normal" is a momentary switch or inching switch, a momentary switch example is door bell switch which get connected for a short period to trigger the bell ring, the smart module is supposed to act as momentary switch, however, look at the terncy smart module, it is acted as power connector and provide power to the load such as light bulb, it is not a relay.
Unless the terncy app can configure the switch as virtual momentary switch, then it is possible to use terncy smart module to control autogate.
normal smart switch can only support 2A to 3A per point. u need a proper switch capable at least 20A for aircond.
I did saw some ppl use the power socket with smart switch, those smart power plug have max of 16A, barely enuf...
quote from internet...
16A is good enough, 240V x 16A = 3.8kW, I hardly see any aircon requires such high power, my 1.5HP inverter running at full speed only uses around 1kW.
TBH can still go for the old and trusty Cat 5E, you can get more than 1gigabit from it (although officially that is not stated in the spec), i tested i can get about 7/8 gigabit through my Cat 5E, but if its a massive renovation might as well get the better cable sure.
CAT 5E supports 1Gb, no issue at all, if cable length is within 30 meters, it can go up to 5Gb

160 for the tuya ceiling version, not fp2 Works fine if you don’t have fans in the room No multizone like fp2
Still sceptical to get one since even fans as interference may or may not detect presence properly
I have been using the fp2 for almost 2 weeks, this mmWave occupancy sensor is amazing!
It is multi zone’s detection, can act like multiple motion sensors It is damn sensitive and accurate to few cm, even you are sleeping and it can sense your respiratory movements It has very fast response times, once you are entering or leaving the designated zone, it triggers in less than a second You can configure interference zones for fan, curtains to avoid unintended triggers It works well in HomeKit, so it can work flawlessly with home assistant
The drawback is it requires usb power, hence, not convenient to place at the best spot
Currently the device available in China and can only pair to China region, and the connection to China is damn slow, the setup of zones requires real time connections to China servers, hence, it is not easy to setup. However, detection is locally run and does not require connection to China servers
If your couch or bed right below fan can still detect presence? Since it's right within interference area
You can position the sensor downwards to your couch or bed, the sensor has not-so-wide cover area
Interference zones cannot overlap with detection zones, thus, placement is very crucial to get accurate and sensitive detection, I spent two days to find the best spot
Anyone feels like they’ve done all that they can with their smart home system? I kinda feel that way for now. Nothing much i want to add already. Covered most bases Lighting, fans, vacuum, Tv, aircon, sockets, door locks, gate, cctv cameras, alarm, sensors (motion/contact/temperature/leak)..
Waiting for something new (besides upgrading to matter) to add on to my house.
Any recommendations?
Facial detection and object detection for security cameras, reduce false alarms and improve security
program -> switch on the porch light and open ur autogate
Frigate coral tpu uses old yolo object detection model which is pretty inaccurate, many times can’t tell person and dogs or cats, so don’t expect it can recognise car plates. This requires custom train model

Based on the 2 weeks that I'm using location based to open my autogate when I arrive home... I would say about 70% hit rate.
I usually drive up to my house, then I would align so I can reverse my car in. Sometimes it opens when I'm driving very near to my house (perfect situation...), sometimes it opens when I'm aligning my car to reverse park in... (still ok...) sometimes I need wait 1-2 minutes after I have standby to reverse in...
and 30% of the time I just open the gate manually after waiting
Enlarge your home location radius, this will help to increase success rate.
My autogate auto open bases on my iPhone gps location running on home assistant companion app, the success rate is over 90%
