Yea I'm a silent reader on there too. Nice that they have so many sub-forums discussing almost anything and everything about Juve.
Yes, we have conceded many goals through set-pieces so early in the league; it is a stark contrast to the entire of last season. I haven't watched enough of our games to pin-point why. As you know, I have trouble waking-up and staying awake for our super early-morning games (I think it's the age factor). I might miss our Empoli game as well - I have to fetch a friend from the airport; and it's SO early too! Almost like EPL early!
I did not see the Atletico-Bayern match but I do recall pundits saying we looked more Spanish while Atletico looked more Italian.
What's your opinion on that? I can understand that certain leagues tend to display a 'theme' in how they play; for example I think the majority of football fans still say that Serie A is 'too' tactical in its approach and that the EPL/La Liga is more exciting to watch. But with the Atletico/Juve comparison, I'm thinking that some teams are evolving and breaking from the traditional moulds.
Most Spanish teams still sticking to the free-flowing attacking, possession based football. The only exception are the current Atletico team
under Simeone, and Jose's Real Madrid..and to some extent Sevilla. They're flexible hence why they're successful mostly on continental stage. And in Italian section, Napoli & Roma looks nothing like an Italian traditional team. Both of them have pacy set of players and great attackers but both of em are above average in term of defensive strength. The evidence was that some years ago Napoli got trashed by Vikoria Plzen 5-0 on aggregate in UEL while Roma getting handed 7-1 for twice in UCL
Juve on the other hand, we're more flexible. We're not ultra attacking team(like Barcelona or BVB) but we're not
ultra defensive either(like Simeone's Atletico or Di Matteo's Chelsea). For example take a look at our 2 legged encounter
against Bayern last season. In the first half in Turin, we showed too much respect for Bayern and decided to soak up the
pressure instead of try to attacked em, which could've ended 3-0 for Bayern in the first half alone. Second half after Robben's goal, Juve
decided to wake up and attack Bayern then making the scoreline 2-2 and nearly 3-2 on the night.
For example when we were under Conte, I think we still displayed our defensive strength, not many teams were able to beat our record, but we really lacked creativity in our style. Conte's Juve churned out wins, almost like grinding it to the bone, sometimes it was hard to watch; I mentioned a few posts back that it really annoyed me that he would hardly ever make substitutions when he needed creativity or just some fresh legs (that's just my opinion though, maybe others saw it differently).
last time we looked like a "watertight Italian team" was back in Capello's era. Fielding 2 DMF in Vieira & Emerson
while centerback were covered by then-Worldclass Cannavaro & Lili Thuram. Hence why we only lost once in 2005/06 that was
to the prime AC Milan...but honestly speaking that Juve was a sight for sore eyes. Boring team to watch. And kinda
underperforming in European stage.
Conte's 2011/12 team on the other hand, the mixture of great possession attacking & defensive football. We ended
the season unbeaten and only conceding 18 goals. Reminiscences of Lippi's era Juve
Under Allegri though I noticed that we had variations in style of play; but somehow managed to maintain our reputation as Serie A's best defensive team. This time, I dunno, I think Allegri also knows we have conceded through set pieces and he is working on that. But it is also nice to see Juve playing a bit more creatively.
they need to appoint Stoke City's coach as set pieces defending coach though
