hiya guys, first time asking for guidance here

recently i am planning to get portable machine for werk and gaming, but know less about it compared to desktop

i'm a long winded person (refer to peeps in RWI, i write sh!tty suffs... i sh!t u not...), so i'll try to keep it short...

- programming sh!t, so it has to be powerful enough, and being a sh!tty pro gamer, i know good graphic card is essential
- i plan to do some mid to heavy virtualizationand dump all werk related files into virtual machines so i can keep the pc clean for development and testing
- currently i use a 13" and sometimes i feel i'm in need of wider monitor

as criteria mentioned above:

- 1TB of storage for roughly 4-6 Virtual machinesand the rest are either for games or documentations about creating life, SSD not a necessity but still good for booting up OS and GAMES!!!
- 8GB of ramz (upgradable... hopefully), for simutaneuos virtual machines (that would means the OS should be 64 bit... *sigh*)
- good warranties and support, not like TMNut... 'try and flip ur modem... working ah... ok, case close!!!'
- screen size should be either 15" or 17" and touch screen is optional
- good graphics, i'm a ATi Fanboi but from reviews i know about how bad they are performing in portable gaming machines... so... any recommedation on Nvidia?

budget wise, it should be from 3.5k to 4.5k (could be in higher spec if it aint for extra 6%... *sigh*)

ok, enough descriptions about my requirements and my hidden agenda of making it a portable gaming device, other than just mere platform for werk. feel free to enquire more information for my blurry specification

in b4 opti-dude comes here and yell, 'OMG!!! r*d b*an army getting a betta machine!!!'

Nope, with lithium ion battery. it is fine. Older battery nickel based might have problems.

erm, its better to have removable battery laugh.gif please do consider this

QUOTE
Modern power management circuitry will prevent "over-charging" the battery, even if you leave it charging 24/7. What is detrimental to the battery is charging it to 100%, letting it drain completely or near completely, then recharging it to 100% repeatedly. This puts a lot of wear on the cells.

Try to keep your charge between 20% and 80%, while only doing a FULL charge + discharge cycle once in a great while. This will preserve the overall longevity of the battery's ability to hold a charge. Also, the cooler you can keep the laptop, the better for the battery as well.

QUOTE
Never leave the machine plugged in all the time. Laptops are meant to be portable. Using it as a desktop that never runs on the battery will destroy your battery life.

Cycles are your friend. Never letting the battery complete a cycle will greatly diminish your run-time. Try to avoid charging the battery unless it's drained past 30%. Any time the battery drains past 50% and charges more than 50% counts as a cycle. The farther you let it drain before the charge - the better its overall health will remain.

30 cycles in a year is not a good thing. wink.gif

Let the battery drain completely a few times a week.

Never let it sit for long periods of time without use.

Batteries need to be loved or else they won't love you.

well, the machine is for werk but playing games with few buddies in CC is just meh!! dirty toilet, smokers, trash talkers, sticky keyboard and mouse, crappy lighting, etc... it's better to be sitting in mah buddy's house and play there, so higher spec for mobility is quite important.

checked the link, the product site and the spec, basically good reviews about the machine but the obvious casing makes it obvious to the other workers that i am using a blaardy gaming unit, and that made me look unprofessional, in a sense...

i know it sounds might be nitpicking, but i also concern about the built-in battery. i dun use much battery (for environment sake) and even dun carry battery for the current machine that i use (no power = no werk). it is treated more of a backup than the main power source.

i'm not saying it is a bad unit; it is well-built powerhouse for werk and gaming with a reasonable price.

anymore more recommendations?

MSI GE62/72 (do note the model number, it is the lastest afaik should be better at cooling.)
Alienware?

EDIT : Still look like a gaming machine doh.gif . Dell top of the range inspiron model, HP (Cooling not so good for Envy model (Using one tongue.gif )) or Lenovo Y50.

checked inspiron few days ago, look mac-ish... i poked fun of people who uses *certain GNU-Linux distribution* as 'cheap mac imitators' and 'too poor for mac'... getting it would be a huge slap in mah face, plus it aint fer gaming

MSI GE60/ 62/72 is decent but from the reviews i read, there would be either the heat that stops you from using it or the undesirable partitions size that turns people off

Lenovo Y50 has almost the same heating ventilation issues as MSI counterpart... ok, in some cases they are worse...

Alienware is indeed fine tuned but the price is way out of the league...

i'll try to think and balance the factors for those mentioned notebooks, and i know that there's no such thing as perfect (even for beeeewbs...)

*feels like someone is trying to punch me in da face for my uber nit-picking*

First of all, are you planning to game or not ? Please do specify it in a more straight forward way. From what I read, it seems like you didn't want to game at all. Please don't keep using strikethrough words. If it is not meant for others to read, just DELETE it. We're here to help you, so please shorten down your question and statement. No point reading unnecessary stuff.

If you're not going to game at all, you opt to get business grade laptop like Thinkpad, Latitude or Elitebook. You don't have to concern about the battery, stay plugged in is not a big deal for laptops nowadays. A lot of laptop is leaning to built in battery design now. Your laptop battery will die eventually even though you detach it and didn't use it at all.

For programming, you don't have to have a beastly machine to do those coding. 4710HQ is sufficient enough. For virtual machine, if you're really into heavy VM and multi tasking, recommended are 8GB at least. Most laptop which cost > 3.5k will not be using onboard RAM and most is equipped with 8GB ram and up to 16gb min ram. (Exclude ultrabook)

For you, I think Latitude and Thinkpad suits you more since you're working most of the time. Just make sure your gpu is quad core and 8gb of ram. SSD is a plus but not necessary. Why I suggest quad core is maybe your project requires you utilize multi core / you're writing programs which utilize multi core.

If you want to game, with your budget you have not much choice. If you don't want Z5, you need to top up to get S5. Y50 I personally don't like it as the built quality is not as good as Asus. Its screen sucks also (go find out why it sucks yourself, it has been mentioned a lot of time in this section). If you're not playing those High demanding games, gtx950m or 850m is sufficient for you. Like Dell Inspiron 7447.
