Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what the heck eh.
I recently bought a PC, spec: AMD Athlon X2 4400+, stock cooler, Asus M2N-E bios 1102, 1GBx2 Mushkin EM2 DDR800 RAM, XFX GeForce 8600GT (650m), Cooler Master 430w Extreme Power, Microsoft Windows XP Home (SP2) original What I've encountered: - Windows hanged once for no particular reason (it went to blank screen because it was left for more than 20 mins). Tried to move the mouse or keyboard (after 1 hour, went somewhere), nothing happen. Had to cold restart. Even tried the Numlock key, always on no matter how many times I pressed it. - Windows shutdowned by itself (freaky). This, too, happened when I left the PC for more than an hour (went to bed). For both incidents, there are NO BSoD, NO Kernel Dump/Minidump. Both only happened once. If it's Windows, I've installed all the latest patches. If it's the motherboard, I've just had it switched a couple days ago. So, it might be the CPU or the PSU. I don't think it's the graphics card. It didn't happen (restarts, shutdowns, BSoDs, etc.) when I: - play games (CPU/GPU intensive games like Oblivion) - benchmark using 3DMark06 1.1.0 - surf - doing work It only happens when I go to sleep. Need Thanks in advanced! |

It happened again last night.
Well, the temperature shouldn't be a problem. If temperature was the cause of the shutdown, my pc would have shutdown when I was playing intense games like Oblivion, Gears of War, etc. Correct? The thing is, I left it in Locked Mode (Win+L) and went to sleep. When I woke up, it was off. Can a power surge do this? This doesn't happen when I bring my pc to my place. Only happens when I'm at my parents'. |

Dudes, wanna ask how do I remove the CMOS battery carefully? I'm using P5LD2 SE mobo. I can see "two" pins there, what should I do? Press it down?
And then later on, how do I fix it back with a new battery? Never tried replacing cmos battery before, so I'm quite scared. This post has been edited by zeist: Feb 9 2008, 03:43 PM |

QUOTE(my44 @ Nov 28 2007, 05:52 PM) Dear sifoos and otais, I got the same prob. 2 days ago. Found out its a trojan. Scanned. Delete. Repaired. Still restart. reinstalled windows without formating. Now all is ok.Guess what, I also have this bewildering auto-restart problem (with 'clacking' sound from inside the PC right before it restarts). Please refer right away to my minidump attachment which runs from 2th Nov to about an hour ago (28th Nov). From my side, here are some observations/info on this 'problem': Info: The PC is a P4 with 1GB DDR RAM. Two IDEs connected to two Western Digital hard disks. Another two IDEs were connected to Samsung DVD ROM and TDK CDRW. Oddly, only one of the two CD/DVD drives can be detected by Windows. I removed the IDE from TDK CDRW so that I can use the Samsung DVD ROM to play movies. The movies were often found sluggish and stuttering, and worse, resulted in auto-restart. My step: I disconnected both the IDEs for Samsung DVD ROM and TDK CDRW. So the PC IDEs are only connected to the two HDDs. Auto-restart still occurs. Info: One of the auto-restarts gave me a Windows error message "Your computer has just recovered from a serious error" and when I clicked "Send Report to Microsoft", there is a Microsoft website diagnostic page that says some problem related to my CA eTrust Antivirus. My step: I uninstalled CA eTrust Antivirus and put in !Avast Home Edition, which is said to be the best AV software out there. The random auto-restart still occurs although the Windows error message "Your computer has just recovered from a serious error" no longer appears. Info: Suspected of virus/worm/trojan problem which can also result in random auto-restart. My step: I did a comprehensive scan by !Avast Home Edition and it did find a Win32:Trojan of some sort. I quarantined the infected file(s) but auto-restart still occurs. I decided to delete the infected files afterwards. Auto-restart still occurs. Awaiting for a saviour |
