Greetings,

As the topic's title suggest, there's a new eco tyre in town (maybe you guys have already known 'bout it), from Dunlop. As far as i know, the Formula D01 is a budget friendly tyre, with decent attribute compared to rivals Falken, Hankook and so on.

I was looking for replacement tyre at mudah.my and stumbled upon this ad, Dunlop Formula D05;
http://www.mudah.my/195+55R15+Dunlop+New+T...6150.htm?last=1

Gingerly, i searched for tyre review for this tyre. Apparently, this tyre been launched recently in Singapore;
http://www.rev.com.sg/2014/10/binter-dunlo...unch-new-tyres/

So, the real question is, has anybody here bought it?

That's RM 385 @ Citicars, check them out at fb: citicarsmalaysia. They absorb the GST, no extra charges on credit card and also gives free alignment, balancing and nitrogen air for all tyres.

I'm writing a report after using the Dunlop Formula D05 for 3 months. This Dunlop Formula D05 is the latest thread (flower in Manglish term) design freshly launched early March. The threadwear is 340, Temperature A, Traction A, Made in Continental Factory, Malaysia. I got fresh tyres Manufactured week 1015.

Three months have passed since I bought the tyres. I am very happy with the tyres. It's ALL ROUNDER all Weather tyres. I took the Waja to 2 long distance trips. It's Ipoh trip and Kalumpung Training centre using trunk roads. The tyres took the challenge, gave me a comfortable ride over all terrains. I'm also happy with the low tyre noise, it's very quiet in most terrains compared to my previous tyres Pirelli P6.

Also, it went through recent floods in Shah Alam with no aquaplaning, it stayed planted on the road.

Here's Singapore's review on this tyres:
http://www.sgcarmart.com/products/overview.php?ID=10599

Without further ado, let's proceed to logbook...

Mileage at tyre installation: 176,747km - 27 March 2015

Mileage today: 179,722km - 29 June 2015.

Mileage covered: 2,975km...

FUEL CONSUMPTION SO FAR:

Test car: Waja 4G18, 195/55R15.
BEST: 9.35km/l
WORST: 5.93km/l
Average: 7.6km/l.

My rating so far:

COMFORT: 10/10
VALUE: 10/10
WET HANDLING: 8/10
NOISE: 9/10
DRY HANDLING: 9/10
GRIP: 8/10.

OVERALL: 8.8/10.

Not enough mileage to warrant an accurate write up. I shall review this tyres again in 3 months time... See you in 28 September 2015.

If you want to buy this Dunlop Formula D05, please check out this place:

Been using the Dunlop Formula D05 for 2 months. Previously using Toyo T1R.
And I can say that I really like the D05. Mainly because it is cheap for the performance it gives.

Dry and wet grip is good. Noise level is low. Comfort is there.
Tested the tires at 200km/h and I am still confident with the tires grip.

Been using this tyre for about 12k KM. Was using GT radial champiro bax2 tyres prior to changing to this tyre. Noise level was significantly reduced of course if compared to my previous tyre.

Has the chance to drive in heavily flooded road the other day and traction was really good, for the price paid I would say it's really worth it

Yes they have this size for City and Insight. I inquired and was told it costs RM215 PJ in Paramount Dunlop shop. Have to order before hand as they don't keep stock. 195/55/15 more popular. Came to know about this tyre when replacing bulging sidewall in the front pair Kumho of another car. The older pair moved front whilst a new pair of D05 were shodded in the rear. The grip and noise level impressed me overall as well the price RM160 per piece for the 195/55/15. Value for money.

If you have the budget, go for the PS3.
It is much better.

Have tried D05 for a week, recorded nearly 1500km.

Found the compound to be a bit stiff, grip wise just ok. At least I dun feel that grippy when traveling above 140km/h.
For the price, nothing much to complain.

New tyre should be put at the rear.
The better grip tyre, should be at the back too theoretically.

PS3 and D05 not in the same league, not sure how would be the outcome if you mix them on your car.

Well my car is front wheel. If lets say ya... Old tires were to put in front and it burst i will not be able to control anything. Coz my old tires is alrdy 4 yrs old. So i wouldnt want to take d risk doing so.

Ermm.. I dont think it will cause any big effect having two different threads though.. Coz many also did tht n i suppose there r not much of a big difference base on surveys from some of my automotive friends. And i don intend to change d rear one too soon as i seldom drive this car. And i think its wiser to budget for d rear ones as they r mainly used for rolling purposes only. Right?

Front wheel or rear wheel, the best tyre should be at the rear.

If the rear tyre burst, your car will swing around but if the front burst, you could possibly control it with the steering wheel. Anyway, most tyre would have maximum 5-year shelf life.

If that the case, you shouldn't have bought Ps3 either brows.gif

I bought ps3 coz i js wanted to feel what it is like as many said it is good. Basically thats my only reason putting em on my car to test the feel of it.

Coz i have been using ori tires only so far. Hahaha.

I found that D05 grip is better to me now. Perhaps tyre pressure was a bit too much, at least I dun feel that with Goodyear/Continental before this.

Overall, good buy.

Hi All,

Just to add latest price info on Dunlop D 05 size 205/55/R16 for my Proton Prevé.

Bought it today for RM240/tyre. So, 2 tyres = RM480 (free balancing and valve) + gst = RM508.80.

Quite a decent price after viewing all other reviews.

Shop: Maxipura Sdn Bhd at Presint 16, Putrajaya (attached to Petronas station).

for this size is less than rm 350 so the price still accceptable.cheaper option i suppse only have achiles sport for that size which is quite worth to use for performance.

achiles is good? i read some review they said the rubber will show sign of tearing, maybe they drive too aggressive

i was expecting around 400+, but RM350 i think is a good buy since i saw a lot of good review around but mostly is for 15" and 16"

Guys, what is the price range for this tyre? size 205/55/R16... I've been to a shop where they said the price is RM350 per tyre, which is ridiculous by any means. By knowing the price range, users wouldn't be ripped off by the price. I actually blame Dunlop for not putting the RRP on their website... would have been better if they had done so.

Changed 14" J5 at 30 Dec last year till now and hit 8k++ on it. When servicing tyre the man said wore almost 50%. But this tyre is great, worth the price. Btw, 15" is using D5 or J5?

D5 tyre thread is so sexy! lol!

HI All,

Just to share my review of D05 after changing to it with size 215/45/17 @ RM250 per donut, its doing promotion previously, now it should be around RM290 - RM300 i think. Now my review is based on 3 months of using it and so far it is satisfactory.

My initial impression of Dunlop D05 is, its bloody noisy! Yes< i can hear the whoom sound creeping into the cabin and believe me, its LOUD. I am not someone to complaint about noise, as i firmly believe that ICE can easily drawn out the noise, and yes it did, but I have to turn the volume much higher cool.gif Now before you misunderstood that this is a complaint, it is not, after the tyre is properly run-in, it is a fine tyre.

It could be due to my alignment too, as I have a habit of going to one particular guy who do great with alignment, and after that, the noise is not so loud anymore, anyway, I am enjoying every minute of D05 now.

Looking at the tyre, it is quite obvious that it is well design and manufactured, with wear indicator which is thoughfully located for us to do a check from time to time. The thread pattern is not bad, with deep grooves to ensure excellent water dispersion.

I have the pleasure recently of trying out in the wet, being rainy these past weeks, and true enough, the tyre didnt disappoint. I have good control at 90-100, not too fast tho, but mostly city driving. Manage to track right into puddle of water, its deep too, and the car remain in control, steering wheel remains steady thumbup.gif

The sidewall is relatively solid without being too hard, Achilles is harder, yes I use that before. Nothing to complaint about both Dunlop and Achilles - true value for money with reasonable result just dont expect Potenza-like performance.

Braking is good, and touch wood i haven't tried emergency stop, which Achilles may slide a little, having experienced a few close calls earlier. Cornering, i must say is steady but unspectacular - Achilles is slighly better at cornering - hard. Still it is no big difference, in fact I felt more comfortable throwing corners with the not so stiff sidewall which is the Dunlop, than the Achilles - hope I am not being self-contradictory, but the Dunlop brings the car back nicely after corner, whereas the Achilles tend to be more abrupt when going into straight - maybe its just me

The only other mid-range that is slightly better than Dunlop and Achilles might be the Falken, which I tried and they are not bad. Falken can really tempt you to floor it, and they are great - at least initially, as Falken tyres performance tend to dropped significantly at 50%-60%, while Achilles, they seem to last forever!

The best I had ever used is still the Potenza, but, yes a but for the price, which is ridiculous. The last I checked on them - RM700 a piece for 215/45/17 - Japan bangwall.gif bangwall.gif definitely a nay. All in all, I am satisfied with the Dunlop, but its just 3 months, will observe longer before i push it further.

Hello Chief,

Care to provide your latest feedback on the D05s after approx. 7 months of use?
I'm due for a change of tyres soon and would be considering these tyres (Size: 215/45/R17)

Pls do let me know the location/shop where you purchased those rubbers as well.

Thanking you in advance.

Hi, after like 7 months, i can say D05 is solid to me. But heck the noise is something that you need to live with but the performance during wet is really good, not a hint of aquaplaning, cut thru like a knife.

Just for information, the tyre comes with thread indicator, which is great, you can tell when and whether its time to change donut with the indicator clearly displays - quite a considerate feature for car owners.

Good to know.

Care to share the name of the shop where you bought the D05s?
Also, is the RM 250/pc that you paid for the last time inclusive of Valves + Balancing OR are those charged separately?

Are they any good in terms of tyre balancing?

Just got a full set of DUNLOP Formula D05s, and my impression after my first drive with it... It is a much better set of rubbers compared to the SILVERSTONE Atlantis V7s which came stock standard with my car smile.gif

Was also deciding between this (d05 or Falken ziex 914) but then I got offer for Falken ziex 914 ecorun @ rm125 a piece (week 25 year 2016) for 195/50r15. So I took it since online reviews for these tyres are pretty good (85% positive)

Pretty great so far biggrin.gif

Ditched the Tyre after nearly 40000km since installed a year ago.
Really whack the tyre 9 9. Size 205-55-16
Bought it for rm225 per piece a year ago at weng Heng. Their alignment sux.

Initial stage, everything decent. Could do dry high speed at 160km/h highway cruising not much issue but dry grip start to fade by then. Its good enough for the price paid. I am not expecting Ps3 performance anyway.

Wet grip to me, decent. Somehow wet grip start to fade as Tyre wear. When thread left 50%, aqua planning quite obvious. Again, this is budget tyre. I need to have high concentration while driving during rainy day, especially when I cruise on North-South highway.

For the price paid, now there are hankook ventus 2 concept, Achilles atr sport as alternative. Considering trying other brand soon.

I think highway cruising even at 200kph in the dry won't tell much about tire performance other than probably noise and comfort level. If in the wet then may tell a bit more about aquaplaning resistance and some wet grip. When tackling bends then that will tell a lot more again. ATR Sport does not have as good grip as other high performance tires, seems more like mid-level performance tires instead but advertised as high performance. You can see the tread wear is also rather high at 400 which normally indicates using rather hard compound which would not give good grip like more well known high performance tires which are around 300 or lower.

Dunlop d05 doesn't do too well in high speed cruising in dry. Grip started to fade above 150km/h. Tyre started to become bouncy.

Atr sport isn't high performance tyre anyway, unless someone trust the traction AA rating so much. Somehow many E-segment and above vehicles use them a lot due to the cost and frequency of changing. E-segment cars are heavy and not all willing to pay rm600 per tyre and change every 20000km. Many would be willing to settle for cheaper alternative that have decent reputation.

Thus far, the better tyre that I tried on my car was Goodyear f1d5. It's really grippy for the price paid. Let hope atr sport do a bit better than d05 on my car.

Well if can afford big cars should be able and willing to afford good tires too! I seen way too many people driving big expensive cars, using big rims (18 or above) but yet settling for some cheapo tires like this ATR or even worse some unknown China brand crap tires, quite an irony.

Now F1D5 is a good tire! I had used it before too, just a bit more prone to chipping like PS3 if driven more aggressively, but overall performance is great. You should've stayed with that instead of the ATR.

In general yes. High tread wear rating means the tire uses more durable harder compound which usually has less grip. Softer compound will give more grip but then would not last as long, so that's the trade off. Just like in racing, when they use soft tires they can get faster lap times but then they cannot do as many laps as harder tires. So that's why if you look at low-mid performance range tires, they usually focus on durability and you can see most of them have tread wear rating 400 or above. Now if you look at UHP/max performance tires, then you see most of the tread wear are ranging between 200-340. Then after that you got the extreme which are usually just around 200 or lower. IMHO those ranging around 300 is the best balance of performance and durability coz they already can give excellent grip and can last long enough to around 40-60k km. Longer than that IMHO is useless as the tire is also already getting hardened even though the treads still rather thick. Hard durable tires only may be beneficial if you drive very long mileage like taxi drivers.

Yes he did coz he mentioned specifically "Goodyear f1d5" in his post above as the best tire he as ever used so far. Cannot be Dunlop mistaken typo for Goodyear mah, too different what! smile.gif He had since downgraded to D05 then maybe now the ATR Sport, that's what I understood from his sentences above.

I just bought Dunlop Formula D05.
Got it for RM148 each for 195/55/R15.

So far I'm very satisfied. The grip D05 offers is indeed very excellent in dry.
It's even better in wet. Noise is better than ATR Sport 2 and Ecopias.

Hye.thinking of changing my old tyres 15' for my saga. Heard good review for dunlop d05. Is it really ok in term of comfort and noise level? Many also reccomend nano energy 3 which is better between this two guys. Coz right now im using falken ziex and it is really really noisy.

Dunlop. Toyo has tendency to "buang" where it's most needed. Search the forum. Continental CC6 also out.

I changed all 4 of my tyres to this recently. They are 16 inch ones.

So far the tyres has been of moderate satisfaction for me. I was previously using Michelin XM2. Noise level, moderate. Dry grip pretty good. Wet grip acceptable, going thru some moderate water puddle you will feel something. Durability, not sure since still new.

yesterday drove down to KL from Ipoh in rainy season.

Drove 100 km/h - 150 km/h, no sign of aquoplanning.
Just as Continental and Dunlop suggests, I think wet road is where D05 really performs. Now is raining season, very good chance to try out D05 performance in wet.

Last time using Ecopia 200 got torque steer when trying to overtook. Also during wet condition.

What i notice from XM2 was the initial experience is good, but after some time, the tyres become excessively noisy.

Im using this D05 now on front. My rear tyres are NT8000. D05 side walls are not as firm as NT8k. therefore stability during corner NT8000 is better.
Stability : NT 8000 wins hands down
Aquaplan : D05 is better
Noise: D05 quite noisy (after about 50%), NT8000 one side noisy due to uneven wear.
If i were to choose either one, i will go back to NT8000. Now i want to try Fleva.

Been using these tires sized 195/55R15 for about a month now.

Quite happy with it so far.
Still relatively comfortable. Dry handling is pretty good. Can take corners with confidence, with just slight hint of body roll. Wet grip is really good too.

Very happy with it so far. Very good value for money. The pricing is fantastic too.

Would rate it a 8/10.

I had change my 4 tyre to Dunlop Formula D05 225 45 18 with price RM420 per pcs. So far so good as this was design according to Malaysia weather. Also Dunlop D05 is under Continental right now.

Anyway, this is economic if you want to compare with other brand like Michelin PS4. To me is ok coz i am not a racer and overall quite satisfy. Somemore 18-24 mths sure will need replace with new 1. Total is RM1k different so guys if instead go for PS4, but if you have budget sure you can go for PS4 but if you don't mind Malaysia made tyre, Dunlop Formula D05 is the best choice.

Where to find nt8000 nowadays?? My last 4 donuts also using nt8000. After dat, 2 tyre change to achilles, and after awhile another 2 pc to rovelos..after achilles run out i change that 2 tyre to d05..195/55/15. Price 155 a piece exclude GST for 195/55/15.

I agree with nt8000 stability..it was nvr the same after changing to other brands. I always thought that my absorber, or lower arm or alignment or wheel camber got problem but it was just the tyres. Softer side wall really affects cornering performance.

I still hv no comments for d05 performance because i just changed it last weekend and only 2 tyre (front). No chance for hard driving yet.

Might changed the rovelos to d05 later if the sampan feel still there. (i suspect it was from the front achilles tyre as it was the oldest pair). Rovelos also still new. 260 for a pair all in. Dont think much that time. Go for the cheapest 95v rated tyre 😅😅....

Anyway, anyone got any other recommendation for mid range price tyre with stiff side wall? I go for d05 because i read somewhere that the side wall is quite stiff but reading all the comments here make me think otherwise..

Been running with these (DUNLOP Formula D05) since Oct-2016.
After close to 10K km, I'd say I'm still pretty satisfied with the tyres.
Although not an extreme driver or frequent highway traveler, I still make monthly drives between KL-MUAR (dry & wet conditions on PLUS highway).

Here are my ratings for these set of rubbers after ~10K km:

Size & Specs: 215/45/R17 | Treadwear 340 | Temp A | Traction A
Noise: 6/10
Stiffness/Comfort: 6/10 (reminder that I'm on low-profile rubbers)
Dry Handling: 8/10
Wet Handling: 7/10
Cornering (sweeping corners at avg. speed 130~150 kmh): 7/10 - Dry | 6/10 - Wet (soft rain/wet road without puddles)
Downhill (Genting Highlands): 6.5/10 (Dry) *will not venture spirited-driving downhill on wet conditions there*

Disclaimer:
I'm not a pro driver, nor have used gazillion tyre brands/models.
However, I'd say that I have had a fair-share of experience (Pirelli P7, Bridgestone RE003, Toyo T1R, Yokohama A Drive, Yokohama S Drive, Kumho Ecsta Seven KU23, Silverstone Atlantis V7, to name a few that I've used).
I'll admit that I've very limited experience with Michelins and Continentals.
Anyhow, you get the drift smile.gif

Hope this helps.

Nope, never noticed such occurrences on any of my tyres (prior or current, even after 1.5 week stationary).
Maybe that's because I've always kept a lookout on my tyre pressures(?)
The only time I've witnessed flat-spotting was on a friend 's Prado fitted with Bridgestone Duelers, and stationary for 3 weeks. That also was due to under-inflation.
So, I guess one could say that tyre pressure plays an important factor towards flat-spotting(?)

it is advisable i put new Dunlop D05 on rear than old Michelin PS3 on front? Currently run all of PS3 but got front 2 getting running out and wan to try out other brand. Or should i stick back with PS3.

BTW, its Myvi running on 195/55/15 size and coz i living at East Malaysia so seldom hit 100km/h coz speed limit just 90km/h.

Just change 4 units to my honda city 2009. So far so good. The grip seems lesser than previous continental cpc, i don't know is it haven't "run-in" , for example, my car will have a light "drifted away" feeling when passing by lorry or bigger vehicle.

Did 3k km on my tyres. Sidewall is harder than previous conti. I think i will stick to hard sidewalls tyres. Very sweet cornering, more sensitive when maneuver.

Treadwear is 320, in my thinking these tyres can't last real long. I drive everyday average 60km per day.

This tyre profile still available? I was told it's no more produced. When did you install it and where?

I know but whenever I call the Dunlop shops they say factory no more produce. This was back in 2017. Hence I went elsewhere. If any users of 185/55R16 installed it this year please let me know where and how much. I don't mind trying this out.

do you mean the previous cpc2 (continental premium contact 2) doesn't feel float above 130km/h ?

How is the dry and wet grip compare between dunlop d05 vs cpc2 ?

Good question. Cpc2 is better at this point, i used it before and i never have the float feeling, even at 150km/h. Cornering and maneuver, d05 better for me bcz harder side wall.

Cpc2 cannot tahan long, for me. I am saying all this related to my honda city, other cars might have other result bcz diff tyre size.

D05 is all round tyre. I would say perfect performance in dry and wet. So, gain some lose some.

There is no perfect tyre it doesn't exist smile.gif

thanks for your feedback. I'm driving honda city using 185/55/R16, but not much good tyre choices.

I'm using Goodyear Excellence, after about 3-4K wearout, it getting more and more noisy.

Goodyear Excellence has hard sidewall and felt very floaty when above 110km/h, but cornering is really good and confident. I'm using 32Psi for both front and rear, if I use less than 32psi, it doesn't wear out evenly on the tyre thread.

Did you try any other tyre besides Dunlop D05 and CPC2 on your honda city ?

My uncle suggest me to consider wider tyre size such as 195/50/R16. The handling should be better due to thinner side wall and with wider contact patch, the floaty feel should be reduce. But I don't prefer wider tyre because the car will feel heavier since it require more resistance to move due to wider tyre.

Coreect. I eschew wider. Honda city is small and near compact. Wider meaning higher fuel consumption imho.

Who is using yokohama tyres 185/55r16 here?

I didn’t use Yokohama 185/55/R16 before. But I used Yokohama A-drive 185/60/R14 on my old car before. It’s medium sidewall hard but so far I like that coz the grip is quite reasonable especially when new.

May I know how much psi you used during using cpc2 and current Dunlop D05 ?

As I know higher psi will cause the car to have floating feel when drive high speed at highway.

Cpc2 started with 220 increase to 240 because makan thread outside.

D05 stay with 240 to 250 psi. Even.

Wow... that is quite high with (240 to 250kpa) 35 to 36psi, definitely very bumpy/floating. You may need to reduce to 32psi, about 220kpa since the recommendation is about 32psi front, 30psi rear for Honda city manual.

The book gave general (safety) guidance but in real, 220 psi for city drive is not suitable, as i am on the road more than 3 hours everyday. As i mentioned thread wear out from the outside. After pump 240 no issue.

I decrease to 220 when highway drive.

D05 ia half performance tyre. Too low pressure no kick smile.gif

Guys
I'm using Dunlop J05 175/65 since last May.
I've just realise that the tyre guy mistakenly fitted my tyred inside out(I can see the ''inside'' wording from the outside), can you advice is this will hurt my thread somehow?
thanks.

Bought at United Tires Kuantan (since I've moved to this city in 2017), price is cheap, RM115 per tire (they said promotion price) including balancing and installation.. Change only one (cz of misterious bocor) at the wall side) as the other three tires (Continental CC6) still ok..

Hmm...be careful when driving. Normally recommended the pair on the same axle to be identical. Front and rear axle can be different tyre but on the same axle either front or back L&R should be identical.

D05 are normal daily use tyres. If you are not a tyre @nal, then D05s should work well. If not, you’ll need to look for UHP tyres.

That is cheap that you could actually change 2 instead of 1. Can use the CC6 as spare for the other 2. Always change tyres of the same type on the same axle. Btw whats the manufacturing year?

You should not put different tires on the same axle. You should buy another one then put the worse CC6 as spare. It's such cheap tire anyway.

You will definately like the dry and wet situation due to it's all round character.

The only drawbacks i found D05 will slightly increase fuel consumption when the thread wear over 50%.

Changed to Toyo TR1 now. Generally very good in dry condition. Wet of course lost to D05. But hey, you can't get best of both worlds.

TR1 speed faster.
