So, based on my experience, you should remove all of it from HC now.  thumbsup.gif

Totally agreed, I made the same mistake. Better remove it asap.

I allowed it grow into a ball. When it was too big, I tried to trim/remove it. And it spread all over the tank, and I cannot get rid of it. It grows wherever it likes, and now every week I have to pull it out of the carpet grass.

Riccia can be nice too if make it like one biji biji.... Haha. But can be a huge headache to rid of.
Yes, actually if you leave it alone, it will grow in clumps. Very nice, but needs maintenance.

Btw, how to get rid of snails? What fishes to use that are shrimpsafe and don't grow too big?

Assassin Snail, they say. But I usually remove it by sucking them out with tube.

Thanks.
You mean the Assassin snail will eat other snails? Will the Assassins breed in freshwater aquariums or lay eggs in the tank?

Yo ~

peltier cooling ?

my 2 cents
well it can only work for tanks up to max 50L

( PLS note my environment condition- no peltier cooling about 30-31 deg due to power filter) tested on Fluval Edge 46L.

- water temp can go down to 24 deg  (probably lower but this is after 8 hrs of running continuously) but i didnt bother to test further
- I've set it to 27 deg (with max 28 deg) , fan kicks in on and off about 20-30mins interval depending on ambient temp and runs for about 10-20mins reach time
my other unit on a Spec 5G ~ 20L

no peltier cooling temp is 29 deg ( a much cooler pump ! )
- ive set it to 25deg (with max 26.5 deg)  and fan kicks in about 25-40mins interval (and runs about 8-15 min to reach back at 25 deg)
Ive disassembled a 400w unit due to its poor heat dissipation design, going to custom it soon (when i have the time and extra $  eheheheh
Heh, nice tongue.gif

Is this a DIY?

Not a custom DIY, (it's not hard)
I bought it online

Where can I get it? I'd like to connect it to a canister filter.

I agree, peltier is for small tanks. Mine is 200w, ill try to find ways to log and record its power consumption.
*
Actually that's okay for me, because I only want to use it for Quarantine tanks.

Finally restarted my 2ft tank, got a bucket of christmas and fissiden mosses left.

The previous 2ft was my first planted tank, after numerous experiments with plants and fighting algaes, this time I'll be using sands, wood and rocks. Here's what I have, pretty satisfied with the result so far.  nod.gif
Hey arts, looks nice. Do keep us posted on the progress. Where did you get the buce from?
Shrimpgarden was selling a 1 inch stem for RM50. Or the whole piece of driftwood about 5 inch for RM700. puke.gif

>>Question, if I want to add some greens in between and top of the rocks, should I use MC or moss? Seems like moss is easier to attach to rocks?
You're right moss is easier to attach. But I kinda like your contrast of green and gray.

QUOTE(Divas @ Jul 11 2016, 04:27 PM)
Hi all.
I've been planning to have a planted tank for years and have been researching on and off since maybe 2010. I just inherited a tank and a bunch of co2 bits and have the go ahead from hubby to use is for planted. So i'm here for advice on how my setup (in the planning stage nothing done yet) before i make any purchases or put anything together.

The tank is 5ftx2ftx2ft with a sump. I'm planning to have a lowtech tank with less light and no co2 bottle to keep growth/plant trimming minimal but am wondering if i can start it out with co2 and stronger lighting so the plants grow quicker (so i dont have to invest so much in plants to stuff it full as you do for a low tech. (I'm only considering this because i have the co2 canister and 2 double tube lighting fixtures already).

As far as filtration goes for bio i'm planning coral crush and bio mat (we already have both for our pond). Should i add bio balls of some kinda as well? The sump has loads of space so am thinking i might as well fill it up.
Then for mechanical filtration i already have filter wool ans brushes (again for the pond) and figure that will do. Possibly a finer wool or sponge as well if there is space?
I figured i would throw in activated carbon for the first couple of weeks. Would a uv tube be advisable at the beginning of the sump?
I also want to hook up an extra tank either next to the sump or next to the main tank as a refugium but figure i can do that after i've stabalized the main tank (i think trying to do that at the same time is just going to be way too overwhelming and just be an extra place where things can go wrong).

Then for substrate i'm planning on using ADA Amazonia with powersand special mixed in. Do i need a layer of something else under or over or is just the Amazonia ok (i rememeber reading something a while back about layering substrates but i cant seem to find it now)?

As far as aquascaping goes i haven't quite settled on a style as i need to discuss with the husband so that will also determine the types of plants and fish/inverts.

Thanks for any advice. I think i'm on the right track but have never done any kind of planted tank (aside from throwing a few common pond weeds in with the guppies now and then) so dont want to miss something out and end up having to scrap a bunch of stuff and start over

Hi Divas,
Do watch the video - all 3 parts of it.

I'm not advocating ADA products, and you can use other brands. But you can follow the technique of a new setup.

Hi all,

I am currently running a fish tank having size of 45cm x 30cm x 30 cm with approximately 15 guppies in it. Only fishes, without soil or plants and rocks.

As part of a set up kit, the fish tank came with a HOB filter of which I'm currently using. However, the mechanical filtration is less than desired as there are a lot sediments at the bottom of the tank. I suspect it's either crap from the fish or from excess food and I believe the latter is lesser of a factor as I only feed the fishes once a day. The water is not as clear as the pictures shared in this thread.

Hence, I usually perform water change (approx 20 to 30%) twice to three times a week to reduce the amount of sediments at the bottom of the tank.

I'm looking for advice on how to improve the water quality. Will changing to a better filter solve the above problem? If so, what filter is suitable my tank's size? Greatly appreciate all your help in this matter.

Many thanks!
*
What does it mean by water is not clear? Do you mean there are sediments in the tank (from fish waste and leftover food)? Or the water is milky?

Sediments usually collect at the bottom in between the rocks. You mentioned there's a lot of sediments, but sediments are easily siphoned out during water change. I can understand if sediments are a problem in planted tanks (especially larger ones), but a bare bottom tank is very easily cleaned of sediments.

If you're referring to milky water, then its your filter. Its bacteria floating in the water due to fish waste. Its unhealthy. You need to add bio rings to your filter.

Have anyone tried schooling the same fish species but from different breeders or shops?

E.g. 10 neon tetras from shop A and 10 neon tetras from shop B. Will the 20 neon tetras school together or will they separate into two schools of 10s?
*
Yeah I did this with Green Neons and Chilli Rasboras from different shops. They school as one.

Anyone ever try using root tabs before? Such as ADA Multi bottom or Seachem Flourish tabs?
My rotala is not as leafy as I'd like it to be despite liquid ferts, so I'm thinking of substrate ferts.

Some tip to share regarding algae treatment - green spot algae on slow grow plants' leaves.

I have some Anubias Pettite Nana (obsessedwith this plant recently) in non-co2 and low light 30cm nano tank. Not sure why, maybe it's exposed right under the light I can see green spot algae growing on some of its leaves. It's impossible to remove, tried spot treatment with excel, it doesn't work. In the end did some research and many say dose more Phosphates, so I dosed more KH2PO4, like 2 tea spoons for my 30cm nano tank.

After a day, I can see it receding and today it's gone! Which is good otherwise I would have to trim the leaves. I'm not sure about the dosing quantity, just anyhow dose. It's a cherries shrimp tank and they are still doing fine.

Nice tip!!!
Btw, does SAE eat leaves? I suspect the bugger have been eating my Rotala leaves coz its botak...

Yeah, sold it last week. How's your bucep tree growing?
*
Its ok. Got it from the NS guy. Better get from him as its a lot cheaper. Tied it on the tree 2 weeks ago and still got extra. So I tied the extras on a rock and they're still in the process of submersing.

About CO2. Since I bumped up the CO2, it totally eradicated all BBA in about 3-4 weeks. But the shrimps are affected - activity, feeding, and breeding, dropped a lot. So I have to set back the CO2 to its original settings. Will probably have small pockets of BBA again. Have to find that sweet spot.
