CKJMark  if work as an accountant in commercial iszit difficult for me to cope with if i only have experince in tax and prepared full set account for sdn bhd did not have any audit experince

Depends what they need you to do. For me, I only have tax experience in my professional career. My audit experience is limited to my exposure as an intern and during my secondment stints. I have no problems reading financial statements or with understanding double entry and deferred tax, but if you ask me to discuss about effects of FRS implementation then my eyes look like @_@

I work in the in-house tax unit of a large group of companies so I don't have to deal with non-tax issues very often. But now and then, the occassional HR or audit issue relating to tax does pop up, and it will depend on your own resourcefulness in handling it. LOL.

Can't comment on non-tax work in commercial as thats not what I do.

It really depends on which tax department you are joining. Compliance would deal more on local tax reporting while Transfer Pricing deals more on cross border taxation. TP knowledge should be more valuable when you join MNC later.

Btw, Deloitte KassimChan is Tax Firm of the year in TP.
*
Actually the regular TP work you will be doing is usually local TP (inter-co transfer pricing work). Not necessarily international TP. There is exposure to international TP work, but its not really the norm. I wouldn't be too concerned with that because TP work is theory and principle based. As long as you understand the concepts and methodology, you can apply it locally and internationally with a bit of tweaking to suit foreign laws.

I agree that TP knowledge is valuable when you join an MNC later, but you don't need to be in a TP division of the firm for it. A MNC typically will have an external tax advisor on hand to the TP work. You just need to know the basics and understand the issues. Let the advisor do the dirty work and you just review their report. tongue.gif

Tax compliance is primarily local tax reporting. But depending on the firm you are joining, it will also involve tax appeals and a healthy bit of tax advisory work (WHT, TP, M&A, etc) when you are at senior level. This is usually enough to buff your marketability outside the firm locally and internationally (depending on your experience and exposure). A lot of people look down on tax compliance as "routine paper pushing" but its actually very important for newbies to build their foundation and understanding. So if you want to have a career in tax, compliance is where you should start. IMO, its more important to have a strong compliance background complimented with a little bit of advisory experience rather than specialisation in advisory with no compliance background if you plan to join commercial.

Oh thanks Topace111! Well, I sent in my application on Fri 19th Nov - too late for PwC? I saw their website advertising for December intake so I still dont know if it's my grades? Would appreciate if someone can pretty please enlighten me on the "different cutoff dates for promotion" of PwC, EY and KPMG? What is the min CGPA I need to achieve for them to give me an interview opportunity?

I know it is my own fault for applying relatively late given that my last paper was at the end of Oct. However, I am working full time and pursuing my degree so I had too much work to catch up on after my exams & only managed to send in my CV last week  sad.gif Pls advise, I really cannot stay without a job; I must do something...

I think 19th November is a lil bit too late, as if I'm not mistaken, the new Dec batch commencement date is on the 1st of Dec. By right, you could've applied first and just let them know what you will be sitting for your last paper at the end of Oct, probably furnish them with your semester grades up-to-date for their evaluation.

Its quite hard to tell if your grades made it or not, quite judgmental I'd say. There's a lot more factors that they will consider when they process your application, e.g. extra-curicular activities, achievements/contributions to society etc...hence I believe it is not purely on your results alone.

ps: just fyi, i had a unimate who had a 1st class honours and still screwed up her interview at the end, so yeah.

Hope the 2 cents help

Hi, anyone working at PWC??
Who knows where LOT F , the parking lot nearby monorail?
I failed to search the exact location.

which part are you coming from? if you're coming from the bangsar area, u would need to make a right turn underneath the newly constructed flyover and head on straight to brickfields. keep going straight until you pass a post office on your left (keep to your left cause the road is divided into left and right - one-way system at the moment). there will be a traffic light. go straight at the traffic light and further down you will see a row of shopoffices. go further a bit and u'll see a bus stop. right after the bus stop, there's your entrance to the Lot F parking.

Thank you Garfie, your 2 cents were very helpful smile.gif I just went for my group assessment last thursday and got an offer from Deloitte today. Who are Deloitte's big clients other than Lafarge & Mah Sing?

IMO, I did study very hard all the time, top in my uni and was involved in many co-curricular activities since secondary school. Therefore, I'm a bit disappointed I didn't even get a chance for interview in PwC. Btw, should I commit myself to audit in Deloitte? Would my experience after 2-3 years be as relevant as it'd be if I were to have worked at PwC or EY?

Hi there. Sorry to interrupt but I am wondering which the the cheapest parking area for Ernst & Young (EY). I was recently accepted into EY and will start in mid December. As far as i know, there is the Menara Millenium parking. My friends have told me it is damn expensive and can come up to RM26 per day. They told me there is an open air carpark which charges RM6 flat rate.

Can anyone who is working at EY tell me where exactly is this open air carpark. I tried surveying the area during the weekend but have failed to locate it. I hope any of you kind people can help me out. Thanks.

If you come from PJ direction, you would have to keep right to turn into Pusat Bandar Damansara.
From there on it's pretty obvious. Look right and you see the open air car park. Maybe it's because it was a weekend and you assumed the empty land was for something else biggrin.gif

Oh. Alright. But I thought that carpark is Menara Mellineum's carpark which is damn expensive. I say this because I parked there when I attended the interview. The charges were RM6 for the first 6 hours or something like that. Does the open air carpark require us to take a ticket from the machine to enter or is there some sort of `jaga' or security person there to issue the ticket? I appreciate your assistance. Thanks.

You can try to park help illegally by acting like student, tried that for 2 - 3 months then kena caught nevery try ady. Emm for the oper air, flat is RM6 for 2 hours then RM3 per hour subsequently with no ceiling limit. The arrangement is to buy 20 bulk tickets from operator and the rate will be flat RM9 per day. Park at MM basement after 5.30pm is Rm2.50 flat. Park on sunday is free. In short, the boss said its to encourage you to work with client during office hours. Well i spend 95% of my time outside company, so won't really bother.

EY parking is the most uneconomical of all audit firms. Food there also all fast food outlets.

Put your name down for season parking at Milenium, the open air, and the underground opposite Milenium. It's a waiting list, but you never know when you get lucky. The season parking is cheaper than the tix. Also, covered and open air carpark is same price, so if you have a choice, go for the covered one.

But like topace said, if you are out at client's most of the time, then dun bother.

Alternatively if you take public transport, the Bangsar LRT station has a feeder bus that stops opposite EY.

The Menara Milenium basement car park is really hard to get. Think the last time I asked there were almost 200 person in the waiting list. However the way they do it is they pick randomly and not based on first come first served, so you may get lucky.

As for the open air car park, the availability should be alright. I registered myself for it and got the space 1 day after i registered, so I was kind of lucky. Go to the Secure parking website, www.secureparking.com.my and register yourself there. And if you're an auditor, just get the Prepaid coupons, 20 tickets per batch, RM 9 each. Just share it with friends will do.

Hope that helps smile.gif

Yeah. I will be working as an auditor at EY. I was told that my first week at EY will be training. As such, I will be at the office for the first week. So meaning if I buy the prepaid coupons, it will cost me RM9 per day to park opposite Menara Milenium where the shops are?

Also, how is EY's culture? As in working hours, people and so on? I will be joining as an intern only. Does EY allow interns to be in the audit team to audit some of their bigger clients? Besides that, are all interns placed in the same team to audit a particular client or will we be broken up into different teams?

Sorry for asking you so many questions. I appreciate your kind assistance.

From your situation, I guess you just have to get the prepaid coupons. Costs RM 9 per day. I suggest you get it in advance, i.e. asking a friend to help get it for you, or you go buy it from the basement carpark directly at MM itself. Btw the Open car park is not where the shops are located. It is the open air car park directly beside MM itself. The opposite car park is the really old car park.

EY culture, you'd probably be working late, as the peak for audit is approaching. People wise, that depends on the team you work with actually. If I am not mistaken, yes you might get to work with the bigger clients, depending on the team's needs. This will actually all depend, so I can't comment much on that. You'd probably be broken up into several clients. Each team will only need a couple of interns, unless it's a big client.

oh come on, at least learn how to type your prospective employer's name right; it is PwC and not PWC.

such tiny matters are frown upon.

anyway, i have not interned in PwC before, but i would suggest that you tuck a classic looking (nothing fancy) tie into your pocket.

so if you observe majority of the peeps there, are with ties, just excuse yourself quickly to the nearest lavatory, and put it on.
