Hi all..im a hobbyist photographer and have a D90 with some lenses and accessories. i mostly shoot wideangle landscape and street photography. and sometimes family wedding. so lately the camera have been collecting dust and stay in the drybox due to family commitment and work.its a been a year or plus i didn't really take my camera for outing. its not really practical now with 3 kids. plus i always use my phone to take casual pictures.

im thinking to let go my DLSR and migrate to mirrorless. on paper they are better in terms of image quality, speed, AF and stuff, and also they are more practical to move around with.. but i heard that mirrorless startup time is slower. according to my reading..2 sec or more.. thats a big worry to me since i shoot street photography and sometimes wedding. with 2 seconds delay i can miss a good shot.. for landscape i don't mind that.

so my question.as a hobbyist and casual photographer. is it worthy to migrate to mirrorless from a DSLR. have anyone use it for for wedding or street photography? i feel that is such a loss to keep the D90 with me since i seldom use it now. thinking to sell it with all the accessories to fund the new system with some accessories. while it has value.

My Gears: D90, 18-105mm kit lens, Tokina 11-16mm, nikkor 50mm, nikkor 35mm, sb800.

thanks

I enjoy casual photography with my Canon EOS M. Not the best mirrorless out there but the price its a very good buy. But yeah whenever I feel like taking casually pictures for casual outings feels much more comfortable. You will feel like taking out the mirrorless camera out much more than a DSLR. The feeling of not wanting to take a DSLR out because its so big and cumbersome and big ass lenses pointing at peoples face. Mirrorless does suit casual and street photography.

I don't think missing a moment or image quality will be an issue here for mirrorless. Unless you need accurate FPS shooting.

about the 2 sec. delay, i suggest u let the camera in power save mode 1st, so u can awaken the camera shorter than 2 sec. power on

btw, if u prefer APS-C image sensor with fast & accurate AF, i'm strongly recommend Sony A6000. it really amazing!!!

so many gears to choose from. I implore you to consider fixed lens cameras like Olympus XZ2, Sony RX100, Fuji X20

with the commitments you mentioned, you won't have time to play your new gears regularly even if you change to mirrorless system.
M4/3 is really good and offer wide range of quality lenses but the price is steep
fixed lens camera outdates far too easy
I suggest just keep your system and take casual pictures using your phone, just like what you are doing now.
why?
been there, done that...

I agree, if TS doesn't have time for his D90, there is a high chance that he won't have time for the new system too sad.gif
Maybe just invest in a smartphone with good camera, they are so awesome nowadays thumbup.gif

why don't you teach your children about photography (I know it's hard especially in this tablet games time).
you can let them use your old gear, so that these wonderful gears won't be wasted

I would suggest something small and pocket-able so you would be able to bring it everywhere.

Fuji xm + a pancake
Sony a6000 + a pancake / the 1650 kit zoom

With these you would be able to lug your cameras everywhere and shoot casually more often.

Even if you wanna do something more serious to hang on ur wall... like landscape or street, you'd have option to switch to better lenses. The lens available from sony and fuji quite suit your needs as well.

Those m43 from olympus and panasonic would do too. if i recall they got some pretty small body and lenses, but I'm not that familiar with them

PS: as for the startup time I wouldnt bother that much, before i switched to mirrorless i think that it would bother me. but then .. not so much when im operating it as i leave the camera on most of the time when im shooting anyway

ah yes. it's very very high tech device.

if you want to go interchangeable, go for good lens. no use going for cheap lens. cheap lens usually comes with kit

Although I have a DSLR and a mirrorless camera, most of the time I still prefer to use my DSLR to get the most out of my shots laugh.gif

I only use my mirrorless camera for long trips or journeys hmm.gif

In the end I still love the optical viewfinder and ergonomics of DSLR despite the weight haha, but that's just me la.. I know a lot of people switched entirely to mirrorless and never looked back icon_rolleyes.gif

DSLR is more ergonomic especially when you're shooting macro tongue.gif

Yaya true~ But I was referring to casual shooting just now haha laugh.gif
For the time being mirrorless cannot compare to DSLR at all when it comes to macro cry.gif
