Cheesenium Getting Space Hulk Ascension?
Already bought and finished tutorial yesterday.
First impressions,
Pros:
- No more buggy release like the first game. It is actually released in better state than the first game.
- Still the same unforgiving Space Hulk game I played on my iPad. You need to Overwatch a lot while Genestealers very much kill you in one shot.
- Confusing board game rules are gone as they changed all the dice rolls into percentages. The game will also tell you the break down of the percentages so you know what are you getting.
- The map doesnt reveal its layout when you start, ie: you only see the first 3 meters in front of you which adds a lot to the claustrophobic feel to the game. At the same time, you cant see the Genestealer spawns. It is a lot darker and spooky now. Love the new atmosphere. They also added about 100 new maps into the game, so you have quite a bit of longevity.
- Some major gameplay changes, some weapons, at least Bolters and Flamers so far has different firing modes. For example, you can choose between Sustained Shots that fires more shots that consumes more ammo, Aimed shots that uses less ammo but more accurate or Burst Shots that fire more shots with some loss in accuracy. Flamer now has different flame patterns. You also need to reload Bolters now while weapons do have persistent heats where the more heat you have on your Bolter, the higher chances it will jam.
- Combi weapons, like Bolter-Flamer, Bolter-Plasma and Bolter- Melta. They do add new gameplay as these weapons combines 2 weapons in one. Melta is Broadlord killer. There is also Cyclone Missile Launcher where it is like carrying a multi missile launcher into your missions. One shit kill Broadlords too and can do area damages.
- There is a new playable Chapter, Ultramarines, they have exclusive access to Cyclone Missile Launchers. They are the ranged focused chapter in the game, while Space Wolves is melee and Blood Angels are in between both.
- There are new types of Genestealers where some does range damages and there is one variant that do very heavy melee damages. They do make gameplay a lot more interesting.
- The game offers customisation options and also progression. You can customise the loadout of your squad like, giving them different types of weapons to customise their visuals. Also, they do level up now, like a typical RPG and you can allocate stats to specialise them. Very XCOM-ish to me now which is good
- The graphics are vastly improved with dynamic lighting and soft shadows, looks really good now. Textures also seemed to be improved a lot too. It is a lot higher resoltion with some decent specular effects.
- The animations are changed so Terminators moves faster and looks more fluid.
Cons:
- The UI is a lot worse, I dislike the new radial menu on your units as I prefered the XCOM UI style. It is cleaner and easier to see. I sitll do not know how much CP and AP I have.
- Clipping issues, even though most clipping issues are gone, like swords clipping through the wall when you command your sergeant to walk, some like clipping through the corner still persists.
- No more mission briefing before mission starts with voice acting. I kinda miss the old "Sergeant of the Squad", accept your orders" from the first game. Voice acting feels like it is recycled from the first game.
- Might still be very intimidating for new players.
- Embarrassing spelling errors, like misspelling Blood Angels to Blood Angles. The developers are patching this as I write this.
Yes, I do recommend this game.
