QUOTE(ntlc87 @ Feb 25 2007, 11:42 PM) nice set up..for the RES in the 1st post.. how do u make the basking place? wut is that? somekind of floating thing that is actually the rocky background made for aquariums. made of styrofoam i think. costs between RM12 - RM15 for a 2 feet piece. I just used some leftovers that i cut from my other aquarium and siliconed it in place. dunno whether it will hold once the turtles get heavy. for now it is doing ok. i just noticed a few days back that the turtles actually swallowed the small pieces of loose styrofoam. i noticed this from their poo. i dunno if this is dangerous to the turtles but i guess it's ok since they are excreted with their poo. the small pieces are round and very very small.

QUOTE(SAMPERTH @ Feb 26 2007, 12:47 PM) Be careful of impaction even thou some of the very small pieces are excreted with their poo I believe some still remain inside Fine Sand which are smaller than the small pieces of loose styrofoam you mention and some but not all are always excreted with their poo in all Chelonian kept outdoors No matter how fine the sand are they still cause impaction All the best So what would be ur recommendation? Better to get rid of the styrofoam or make sure that no impaction occurs (by feeding them certain foods to allow easier excretion?) I currently have an idea of covering the styrofoam with aquairum silicone at the loose areas.

QUOTE(uzairi @ Feb 26 2007, 09:26 PM) Silicon might cause a problem too when the turtle chew them. do they chew silicone? if im not mistaken even aquarium tanks are using silicone to hold the glass together. Never saw them chew it. Since the silicone is non-toxic i guess the danger would just be impaction right?

QUOTE(LEVIATHAN @ Apr 4 2007, 01:45 PM) the current condition is great, feed once daily in the early morning with wardleys. biweekly oil their shell with gamat oil and weekly check their condition (eyes, limbs, shell) and sunbath every saturday for an hour. very active, react vigorously to a shaking food container. i feed them by hand, 1 pallet at a time. they always bite my finger, but quickly release it as they know it's finger. very tame, i can rub their head and geletek their leher like kucing. but their bites are hard and nyummy. they hardly eat vege. QUOTE(camillenoir @ Apr 8 2007, 08:47 AM) you'd never believe those are red eared sliders... the temperament is amazing, can stroke heads and chins without getting bitten. have to buy a new tank to house them, cause all my other adopted res are quite aggressive (bitey bitey). kudos to leviathan, for providing love and care to his res. p/s: i'd post some pics here afterwards... guess leviathan really showered them with love hehe kudos

QUOTE(titansulcata @ Apr 15 2007, 09:49 PM) yes, very true all my 5 baby star die one by one. the last one just died so sad... i've done all i can and the necessary to keep them healthy. they just don't want to eat and all died with soft shell. problem is not eating the food now left my sulcata (which touch wood, healthy) OMG all 5? last time i remembered only 2. and i do remember you giving them all proper food and care. luckily ur sulcata is doing healthy. are sulcatas below 3 inch also very susceptible to disease? or is it that stars are more prone compared to other chelonians? dem, dunno how can i forgive myself if one of my turtles die. my other pets (fish & tarantula) im quite ok but turtles...

QUOTE(camillenoir @ Apr 17 2007, 05:58 PM) sayasebuk, you still planning on keeping sulcata's in your father's lawn? they are hardier than stars, but still can't tolerate cold and humidity much. keeping them outdoor is advisable (they are active, unlike stars) but have to bring in during rainy season/night (cause we don't know if the temperature drops suddenly during night rain). (just beware of sub-adult male sulcatas. they often get confused and likely to mount anything with shells ) haha dunno la.my long term (aka dunno when will achieve) dream. i just like the idea of something gigantic roaming around my/fathers lawn (sulcata = 3rd largest tortoise in the world). any visitors will just go WTF??i know you like them big too right hehe (with ur giant asian ponds, etc ). But if i can get a galapagos even better.

QUOTE(camillenoir @ Apr 17 2007, 11:41 PM) long term dream got to start now la asian giant ponds, callagurs, orlitias... yup i like them big ... the cheapest is about 15k Aldabra is can get cheaper though... dry, but not too dry (40-50% humidity should be enough).. and not too hot either, can dehydrate them quickly. better provide gradient heating (light on one side of the enclosure) so they can regulate their body temperature. also, a bowl of water in the enclosure should help. better use osram bulbs. rm1.50 at 7-11 those UVs sold at LFS are most likely UVA lights, can't use on tortoises. and UV lamps don't produce enough heat for stars. correct me if im wrong, the osram bulbs are just for basking right?

QUOTE(uzairi @ Apr 18 2007, 07:28 PM) That's normal for a matured specimen. Males have longer front nails and female longer at the back. yep but usually RES in captivity have longer (like x-men wolverine long) nails since there are no medium for them to trim their nails

QUOTE(uzairi @ Apr 20 2007, 11:25 PM) Ya, you. ooo hehe, you never asked me before so i wasnt sure. all my chelonians are fine (not that i have many of them ). My RES shell still hasnt heal completely. even with ur gamat method, the shells perfect for a few days but after one week, the white stuff is back. but good news is the shells not soft anymore. just that they dont look nice. maybe because i dont sunbath them enough. my boxie is very energetic. whenever i put my hand in, it will chase after my fingers like hell. sometimes scares me . scared he will bite them.

QUOTE(uzairi @ Apr 23 2007, 04:18 AM) Boxie chasing ur hand might be because they are hungry ? About your res, it seems that the gamat is only good for cuts or wounds. I suggest you to try bethadine, which is good for areas infected by bacteria or fungi. U can get them from any pharmacy which costs around rm6 plus or the betadine solution which is around rm4 plus. in that case he's hungry 24/7 . plus i kind of have the impression that he's fat (cant know for sure since i dont know that many boxies). what's the difference between bethadine and bethadine solution? any malay names for them?

QUOTE(uzairi @ Apr 23 2007, 04:47 PM) Er, betadine ? Its called the yellow lotion but its different from the ones that were used. Just go at the Guardian or Watson pharmacy and ask from the people there bethadine, they'll know about it. The different between betadine and betadine solution is betadine is a cream whereas the betadine solution is in liquid form. Hope that helps. okie dokie. so how to apply? similar to gamat method? hey thanks bro
