hi, may i know do civil engineers work under the sun all the time? i am aware that site engineers are required to work under the sun more often on the other hand consultants usually work in the office..my younger sister planning to pursue civil engineering for her degree but my parents are worried this career might not be suitable for ladies as the working environment is undeniably harsh..what do you guys think? if she insists on taking this course what other career options will she have other than working under the sun all day? hope the experienced ones can give some insights on this matter..thank you

Civil engineers are not under the sun all the time. They will be under the sun mainly when visiting the site. At other times they will be in the office (doing paper work/design work) or perhaps attending client meetings.

Sometimes when i was driving i saw some ppl at the road side using the total station to measure stuffs..are those ppl considered as engineers? Or should i ask are engineers required to do those stuffs?

if study civil engineering, best place to work is with consulting engineer firm. no need work under sun coz that's not civil engineer duty. civil engineer duty is to design. perhaps u have to attend site meeting once a week for the sake of reporting. and some site walk with client once in a while. and definitely lady is not suitable to work at site in my opinion. site full of man including general worker / foreign worker. they will definitely view it in different way. of course there are still some girl work as architect / engineer at site.
*
how about those site which manufactures the materials for the construction. eg concrete or steel. Do the bosses of these production site hire engineers to work for them? if yes, are these jobs lucrative?

well all learn different thing. if u wanna be a chartered qs go for consulting qs firm. consulting qs see the thing in client perspective, help client administer contract. while main contractor is about bidding the accurate price (not too low end up losing money, not too high end up lose the tender).
*
Can civil engineering graduates work in a QS firm? Do they have to pass through any exam? Comparing QS and civil engineering which one has a better prospect?

can. no need pass any exam. both also have prospect. but if u study at civil engineering then better u in consulting engineer firm. QS more on contract & costing, engineer more on design.
*

Hi there, thanks for ur reply. Does that mean QS firm is not as strict as consulting firm? If civil engineers can work in QS but can QS graduates work in consulting firm? Does QS have their own governing body like civil engineering has BEM?

qs firm will hire u still. just that not priority. in fact engineer can visualize thing better coz the engineer and seen the actual work and the sequence so got advantage here. and consulting qs don't need u to register in BQSM to work v them but surely u can't be partner / associate coz u can't be Sr (chartered QS)

for qs is almost not possible to join coz no design knowledge at all  maybe fundamental but not sufficient sweat.gif
*
Thanks again for ur reply. Do I need a degree in QS to register in BQSM in order for me to be a chartered QS? If it is not possible is there any other way for a civil engineering graduate to be a chartered quantity surveyor?

this thread was a lot more helpful than what I've expected biggrin.gif I'm currently a civil eng student undergoing training under contractor side. It was really nice to obtain hands-on experience in the site, and I'm thinking of moving forward into my career as a site project planning engineer.

can any sifus advise me how to go about this? I still have a second training next year which I may try to apply into consultant firms under design work (hopefully). But I'm still fairly interested in project planning.
*
Hi there! Glad to meet a civil student here biggrin.gif Do you mind sharing how's your daily work at the site like? Do you work under sun all day? What do you mostly do at the site? I am currently a civil engineering student as well but i literally do not like what i am learning right now especially designing. What i know is site engineers usually dont do designing. Am i right? i hope i can find a career that does not require me to do designing in the construction industry.

I see, thanks for your reply! I'm afraid some consultant companies don't give much exposure about designing work to the new interns  sad.gif  I do want to learn as much as possible from our trainings. As far as I know from my batchmates, they're only helping in terms of paperwork. Any company recommendations? Maybe it's better for those who have already completed their studies > internship than 3rd year halfway > internship.
It depends on the project, mine was already 80% completed so I just help out in inspection of almost finished units/supervision of workers. I don't know about our actual job scopes but I do know that the civil engs in my company will handle the structural design in the site and they will be responsible if there's any structure failure. Why not design? It's pretty exciting  rolleyes.gif I'm also a female working at the site btw, most of them will treat you like their daughter/younger sister haha but you'll still have to be careful when you're alone in the site.

Seems like working at the site is not as scary as i thought biggrin.gif May i know do site engineers have to work under sun all day long?

hey guys, u may ask me anything about construction industry and i'll try my best to answer all ur question.
biggrin.gif

Construction Industry is so complex and actually affect various party namely,

House buyer / Purchaser
Developer
Consultant (Architect, Engineer and etc)
Main Contractor
Subcontractor / Vendor / Supplier
Local Authority (DBKL, BOMBA, SYABAS, TNB, TELEKOM, POS, JKKP, IWK and etc.)

u can also ask me about construction law. I know a lot abt that too biggrin.gif
*
Hi there, I am currently pursuing civil engineering. Do U mind sharing where did u learn your construction law? I am intending to self study it on my own. Besides construction law, what other knowledges in a specific area or special skills should a civil engineer learn to prepare himself for future working environment. The reason I want to learn extra is that I think it is getting more difficult for fresh graduates to get a job nowadays.

By any chance do you guys know any consulting firm or construction company around subang, puchong or kl area is looking for intern? Thank you so much

Hi guys, I am civil engineering undergrad but throughout my studies I was never into doing design. Is there any alternative career pathway for civil engineer other than working in a consultancy firm. I guess working as a site engineer will be quite tough for me to perform coz i am a female. Plus I have ardy experienced working at a site during my internship. To be frank, working under hot sun for a long period of time was a horrible experience for me. So both of the most common routes for civil engineers seem not interest me.

I feel so regretful for pursuing civil engineering. The reason I did that was because I was offered a scholarship to study that. I have an idea of switching to quantity surveying as I heard it involves more office work compared to site work. Will QS firm hire civil engineering graduates? I do not mind starting form zero again. I really need someone experienced in the construction industry guide me on this.
