There she is – the new Moto X. Not the Moto X+1 or the Moto X2 or the Moto X (insert random codename), this is simply, the new Moto X (2nd generation if we are getting really technical). It’s official and will be available soon, as in, this month from a variety of carriers and as an unlocked device.

At a price of $99 on 2-year contract or $499 at full retail, Motorola has created a high-end phone that they are offering at a price around $100 lower than competitors.

The new Moto X has been beefed up in a variety of ways over its predecessor, so let’s talk about it before getting into the hands-on and unboxing stuff.

Specs

In terms of specs, the new Moto X has been upgraded in all of the places that we complained about from the first version. The screen is now 1080p, the frame of the phone is metal and premium, the battery is slightly bigger, and the processor is a current-gen Snapdragon 801, not a 2-year old hacked-together Moto chipset. The camera has been bumped up to 13MP, though it will take further testing over the next few days to decide if it is improved or not.

Motorola really did take the design and awesomeness from the first Moto X, a device we called deemed the phone of the year in 2013, and tried to make it overall better.

To see the full list of specs, head over to this post.

Moto Maker

Yes, you will be able to order a custom phone once again this year. Moto Maker is back and available from day 1, but only through Verizon and AT&T. As of now, Motorola has not confirmed that there will be a Sprint version for Moto Maker. There will be an unlocked GSM model, though, which means if you want a T-Mobile custom Moto X, you can have one.

Moto Maker has more options than ever, with 25 different backs to choose from, including leather that has been sourced from Horween, a tannery based out of Chicago that also makes official NFL footballs and the bands for the Moto 360. There are 17 colored backs, 4 leathers, and 4 woods to choose from. You can also choose from 10 accent colors, either a white (with silver frame) or black (with dark metal frame) front, engraving, storage size (16GB or 32GB), special wallpapers, and a personal power-on greeting.

With the Texas Moto Maker plant closing by the end of the year, you are probably wondering where your phone will be made? Well, it’s happening in a factory in China. Since Motorola continues to expand Moto Maker availability to new countries, they needed more capacity, thus the reason for the China factory to be born. They are still expecting orders to arrive in under a week, which is pretty remarkable.

Software Features (Moto Display, Voice, Actions, and Assist)

Motorola has done their best to improve upon the best software features from the original Moto X – I’m talking Active Display, Touchless Control, and Moto Assist. They rebranded Active Display and Touchless Control to Moto Display and Moto Voice, respectively, making them a part of a new Moto app suite.

With Moto Voice, you can now customize your launch phrase to be something other than “OK, Google Now.” You can access third party apps through it as well, like posting status updates to Facebook, opening YouTube, or sending messages in WhatsApp. Motorola even built in commands to tell your device “goodnight” or “good morning,” which would turn either sleep mode on or off.

Motorola Display is basically the same as Active Display, it just has a new name; same thing with Moto Assist. Moto Actions take advantage of the IR sensors on the front of the device, which allow you to wave your hand over your phone to mute calls or wake the Active Display to show time or notifications.

To see all of the new software features in action, be sure to hit up our hands-on tour.

Turbo Charger

Motorola will let you purchase a special charger as an accessory for your new Moto X, one that I plan to buy on day one if it’s available. It’s called a Turbo or Super Charger. By using the Turbo Charger, you can give your Moto X 8 hours of battery life in just 15 minutes time. Think about that for a second. 15 minutes – 8 hours of use. That’s almost game changer territory.

Camera

Motorola tossed in a 13MP camera that shoots 4K video, but only time will tell if it can actually shoot a decent still here and there. They outfitted the shooter with a ring flash that should introduce softer, more natural light when in use, but again, we still don’t know if this thing can produce quality pictures or not. The camera in the original Moto X was its biggest downfall – here’s to hoping that isn’t the case again this time around.

Motorola has tossed in a couple of new tricks, most notably a feature that tries offer up a better still than the one you may have captured. For example, if the Moto X determines that there was too much motion in your photo, it may suggest another that it took at the same time. For those curious, quick capture camera (aka the double=wrist twist) is back again.

user posted image

Availability

Again, the new Moto X will be available this month at carriers like AT&T and Verizon, along with an unlocked GSM model sold through Motorola’s site. We are waiting for official word on specifics from individual carriers and will be sure to share that info as we have it.

Pricing

The Moto X will run $99 on 2-year contract or $499 at full retail.

New Moto X (2014) Unboxing and Hands-on

user posted image

Today, well, is kind of a crazy day if you are a Motorola fan. Not only did we get a brand new Moto X (specs) and official details on the Moto 360, but we also got a new Moto G, news of a sweet Bluetooth ear piece, and a bunch of other accessories. We have separate posts for all of that goodness, which you should definitely dig through, but for now, we are focused on showing you what to expect with the new Moto X.

We have a leather back. We have a full HD display. We have a current-gen, bad boy processor. We have an upgraded 13MP camera. We have a premium metal frame. We still have Moto Maker. Motorola didn’t hold back at all with the new Moto X. This new version of last year’s phone of the year, is as good on paper as any other flagship, only it costs about $100 less.

so the infrared is also always on right? otherwise how to activate the moto display. but really infrared to activate the moto display is kinda gimmick. now with moto x (old) can activate moto display by just nudging the phone. nudging is not so much more effort than waving. so nothing special. waving at the phone during phone calls or alarm is something good though

i actually have different view on the battery life even though it came with small mAh. i do know Motorola did a great job on hardware optimization to prolong battery life. you may read here: http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-5-vs-moto-x , check the AWAKE frequency shown in the article comparing to Nexus 5. been with nexus 5 and moto x before... nexus 5 really makan battery yooh... while moto X battery life is fairly good.

yes, i do agree on the back M logo... too big and overdo.

still... would like to hold one when it gets here. smile.gif

New moto uses own custom antenna tuner, better than current x, hence much better battery life than x, with more power hungry screen, i think battery is more or less same with current x.

You can never win a spec race, the king will be dethroned within months. The only way to win a customer's heart is through user experience, which IMO is where motorola really shines.

New Moto X (2nd Gen) vs. Old Moto X

user posted image

Owners of the 1st generation Moto X are probably all asking themselves today, “Should I upgrade to the new Moto X?” That’s a great question, one that we hope to have an answer for within the next week or so as we put together a full review. Until then, all we can do to help you get to a solution is continue to fill up your day with new Moto X coverage.

The phone (our unboxing) isn’t launching on US carriers for a few more weeks (closer to the end of September), so thankfully, you have plenty of time to figure this out.

Below, we take you on a quick hardware tour of the outsides of each phone, show how much bigger the new is than the old, and run through differences in specs (full specs) and a bit of software.

Motorola Touchless Control Rebranded to Moto Voice

Motorola rebranded Touchless Control this week, changing it to Moto Voice. Touchless Control was one of our favorite things on the old Moto X, which allowed users to only use their voice to complete tasks.

For example, a user could say, “Okay Google Now, what’s the weather?” Then, without touching your phone, Google Search would ping back the results. Now, the service is called Moto Voice, and the rebranding will make its way to all devices that are compatible with the service.

As for the changelog posted on Google Play, these changes are currently only for the new Moto X, but Motorola’s Punit Soni claims that these features will soon be made available for last year’s models, too, as long as their hardware supports them.

What’s New

- Customize your own launch phrase to make Moto Voice respond only to you
- Voice command support for YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp
- Turn on Talk to Me and other Moto modes through voice commands
- Support for Moto Hint and Moto 360
- User experience improvements and bug fixes

The control is smooth as silk and it has incomparable voice control, that's what makes it worth the money.
Spec race is dominated by XiaoMi and other Chinese manufacturer but they can't win the big players without new innovations and ideas.

BTW IS ANYONE STARTING A BULK PURCHASE OF MOTO X???

if battery sucks, that's the reason why they offer turbo charging

it reli depends user's usage and how they want their phone to be, I'm using my n5 for mo than half years, yes indeed the battery life is sucks compare to other 3k mah phone, but it did serve me well, what i want mainly from my smartphone is smoothness... others features like water resistant or premium design used will more likely to increase my interest on moto x tongue.gif

Actually this 5.2" interested me. Now Moto X 2014 in my consideration list. Last year one never in my mind as 4.7" is just not my type of screen size.

The new Moto X makes a good first impression, but that's as much to do with the software as with the hardware. Luckily, owners of last year's Motorola devices won't be left in the dust. Motorola's Punit Soni has confirmed that all the new software features will be ported to the last generation devices, provided there is hardware support.

given the way moto handles it's previous phones in which they are doing a terrific job with the battery life i don't see this as much of a problem. and besides don't forget the new moto x supports Snapdragon Quick Charge 2.0 and moto claims you only need to charge for the first 15 mins to get 8 hours of battery life, but don't get too excited though...

http://phandroid.com/2014/09/05/motorola-t...-in-15-minutes/

btw am i the only here who aren't satisfied with moto decision to bump up the screen size to 5.2"? seems like moto forgets what makes the precursor model so special and instead decides to appeal the hardcore specs geeks demograph instead with the "bigger is better philosophy" sad.gif

if you watch this comparison video and read the comment section you can tell what im trying to say, sure some of you dont see it too big of a problem but sadly not in my case. still i might try to get this phone nonetheless and see if it suits me well in the end because it is a really nice phone after all

the 2013 moto x is the perfect daily driver phone for me in terms of body size and design. currently im using htc one m7, a tad longer than what i would call comfortable but there's a good reason behind it which is the speaker and it totally make up for the phone height. but i wont consider metal phones anymore cos those are too slippery, cant believe i still havent break my unit after a year lol

so basically what im looking for is something not too enormous, svelte but with enough grip so i wont need cases which is what i consider the moto x 2013 scores perfectly.

I was looking between Moto G and Moto X for a new phone (still deciding). Should I get the current one in the market or should I wait for this new one?

Budget wise, I'm leaning towards Moto G, but aside from that I really like those Moto X.

one problem with the old moto x is that the always listening goes off at very embarassing times. when i do a presentation, it goes off. then of course i ignore, but it persist to say "sorry, i didn't get you, please say that again", to the surprise of my audience. so far that happened twice. I hope with the new moto x, with extra 1 mic (total=4 mics), moto don't make that mistake anymore. i understand if it is not perfect the first time, but perfect it you must! no excuses this time moto!

I am very critical, coz i love my moto for what it visions to be.

Of course not. I even retrain it thinking that retraining will solve it. But it's not that bad. Only happens when I'm doing presentations.

The Moto assist silence phone during meetings. But always listening still active unless u disable touchless control. And when it hears the cue it talks to u. Anyway in case I hurt any Moto fans here, to qualify it happened not too frequently to make it a big issue but still it's embarrassing.

I am pretty sure moto has improved the voice recognition this time round. What other reason they increased the microphone count from 3 to 4? surely is to allow zooming into your voice so that it is clearly received . 4 mics is lots of input. individual voice recognition is not easy, that is why other phones don't like to go that path.

the 2013 moto x is the perfect daily driver phone for me in terms of body size and design. currently im using htc one m7, a tad longer than what i would call comfortable but there's a good reason behind it which is the speaker and it totally make up for the phone height. but i wont consider metal phones anymore cos those are too slippery, cant believe i still havent break my unit after a year lol

so basically what im looking for is something not too enormous, svelte but with enough grip so i wont need cases which is what i consider the moto x 2013 scores perfectly.
*
indeed, why don't u apply stickers on the back of yr m8 (a bit off topic tongue.gif ) i'm using my phone naked with tempered glass front and sticker behind, for sure i'll wont be using any casing if i bought this bad boy biggrin.gif

btw, even though when it comes to malaysia with only black variant, more than 80% I'll get moto x

one problem with the old moto x is that the always listening goes off at very embarassing times. when i do a presentation, it goes off. then of course i ignore, but it persist to say "sorry, i didn't get you, please say that again", to the surprise of my audience. so far that happened twice. I hope with the new moto x, with extra 1 mic (total=4 mics), moto don't make that mistake anymore. i understand if it is not perfect the first time, but perfect it you must! no excuses this time moto!

I guess it misheard your voice saying the command even when you are not.

Let's hope the additional mic will give better voice detection.

the thing i really love about the moto x line is the active notification (moto display). really a time saver time and time again. imagine my phone before, which is an s3.

when i look at my s3, i see there is a message from the led light, but i don't know the message. so i must press the power button. then slide to unlock to go to the home page, then swipe down the notification bar to see my message. then maybe double finger the message to see more of the message. so many steps.

with moto x, i see the message icon, i press it, then read the message. done.

agreed on that, extend physical button life, but for phone without touchless control, you can always try install gravity screen

yeap. but moto is build with active notification in mind.

so u get:
1. better power management for your 'always on' display
2. better power management, using the x8 chip for this very purpose.
3. no need to root and install bunch of technical mumbo jumbo
4. AMOLED display, again for better power management, coz only need to power the lighted pixels.

Bcs it'll be costly. Guess how much the old Droid Maxx costs now? $499 for 16gb. Motorola wants to price all their new stuffs competitively, and they did by pricing them lower than their competitors, but the materials that they're using on all devices are not cheap. Hence it explains as to why Motorola maintains the same chipset and battery on Moto G (2nd Gen.) and uses an old chipset on Moto 360

The 'iVerge' review is out!!

They gave it a score of 8.8 in their written review plus taunted it as the best Android smartphone ever made.

Well, not bad of a compliment from a bunch of Apple worshippers, aint it?

moto should fire the guy who codes the image processing of the camera. moto phones has never been very exceptional with imaging (maybe exclude the zn5 and xt720). even with the same camera module as the lg g2, it still fall short when compared to others who use the same hardware.

the new moto x could have been the perfect droid if

1. preloaded with 3000mAh battery
2. better quality imaging

Apple's photo only looks good on that small screen, if you blow it on a big screen (e.g. a full HD monitor) u would notice it's not as good. The only manufacturer that beats apple with photo images is Sony with the Z2 / Z2C, seriously, if you show people pictures taken with the Z2 and iphone 5s on a FHD monitor, they always thinks the better pictures are from the 5s but 80% of the time they are wrong

Then if you could wait, I really suggest you just wait. From past history, we're quite convinced Brightstar will be bringing them in later. Plus, the preorder is actly for AT&T. You don't wanna get that one

Anyway, here it is if you'd like to get the customized one: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3349897

Moto X Review (2nd Generation)

Somewhere-in-the-Middle

Camera

Is it safe to say that the “camera” section of every single Moto X (2nd gen) review has been the most anticipated of the year? After last year’s disaster of a camera in the original Moto X, Motorola had no choice but to do something completely different this time around. They have done that in some form by at least going with a Sony sensor in favor of the Omnivision sensors they have used for years. They also tossed in a dual-LED ring flash that is supposed to bring in much softer, more natural light when taking photos with the flash on (wait, people use the flash?).

So, what’s the verdict? Well, the camera is capable. It isn’t terrible. That’s an improvement, right? In fact, unlike with last year’s Moto X, I am actually not ashamed to post pictures to Instagram that were taken with the new model, if that means anything to anyone. With great lighting, it can take pretty solid pictures, just like most smartphone cameras. In low light, it’s not the best – again, like most smartphone cameras. With that said, the low light performance on the new Moto X is probably closer to “bad” than “good,” especially when you compare it to the G3 or Galaxy S5. In daylight, though, I would put its photos up against photos taken from most of today’s top tier phones.

While testing, mostly in Chicago, I took a bunch of cityscape and building photos that turned out really well when looked at on a smaller screen (like a phone) or on a social network. Blow up the photos and you will most definitely notice the noise and the less-than-sharp lines, probably due to too much processing. The colors captured seem to be quite accurate to my eye, but every so often come off a little muted. It’s kind of a mixed bag with the camera, which is why we placed it here. Some photos I really like, others I would re-shoot if I had the chance.

Like last year, your photos will look just fine with great lighting or in an outdoor situation (where most of your photos are likely taken). Come inside or find poorly lit areas and you may not love the results. It is definitely a step up, both in speed and picture quality, but I wouldn’t say that it is all that close to the total package you are getting with the Galaxy S5 or LG G3.

As for the camera UI, the experience mimics last year’s model, but adds the option to choose between 4:3 (13MP) and 16:9 (9.7MP) resolutions. Motorola also tossed in 4K video recording. They kept the super minimal UI, though, along with the double-wrist-twist Quick Capture camera gesture. Focusing can be a bit finicky at times, so I would recommend going with the drag-to-focus option.

Overall, the camera on the new Moto X is perfectly fine for most shooting situations, it just isn’t stellar. I would have loved to see stellar, but then again, an improvement over last year’s camera experience is at least that, an improvement.

Battery Life

Earlier in the week, I told you that battery life on the new Moto X wasn’t great. I advised that you buy a Turbo Charger just in case, because there is a good chance you will need some extra juice before you go to bed each night. After factory resetting my phone and testing the device for another three days leading up to this review, I still feel the same way. The Moto X battery clocks in at 2,300mAh, which is by all means pretty small for a 2014 flagship and it shows in my results.

The new Moto X is quite capable of pushing through 14-16 hours of use each day, but maybe not much more than that. I have been through at least a half-dozen other flagship phones this year that all provide much more life out of a single charge than the Moto X. It will get you from the moment you wake up in the morning until you arrive home from work in the evening, but don’t expect it to have much left as you sit back and relax on your couch before heading off to bed or out on the town for a nightcap.

Motorola decided that it would rather make a phone that remained slim and felt great in your hand instead of tossing in an all-day battery. While I love the feel of this device in hand, it really would have been fun to see Motorola construct a great feeling phone that also killed it in the battery department. I guess we’ll have to wait for that kind of battery life in the new DROID that they are making in partnership with Verizon.

Not surprised at all. Motorola phones have long been sturdy, and will always be. No matter what I did to my previous or current phones, they won't die. LOL

Looks like Moto X enlarged. Maybe they make a bigger version for buyers of Nexus 6, and those who want smaller go for Moto X so that there is no clash of market.

This might the rumored-but-then-lost-after-Android-Silver-cancelled Moto S ( Motorola's answer to Android Silver ), noted the dimple with M logo, and no Nexus label. It's possible a Motorola phablet in work, or just the dummy of cancelled Moto S

As I recall last year during interview with Motorola at the time launching the Moto G (2013), they said they will have Phablet in the working in 2014 Q4. So this is the Phablet they mentioned 1 years ago November/December 2013.

Here's everything you can command your new Moto X to do by voice

What's easier than telling your new Moto X to tell you all the things you can command it to do with your voice? Why, getting one of us to tell you first.

Moto Voice is the new-and-improved voice integration that does a lot of what you get with Google Now, but with a few Moto X-specific features as well. When you first set up Moto Voice it'll recommend you take a spin through this list. But if you're still trying to figure out if the Moto X is right for you (and we highly recommend taking a read through our full Moto X review first), here's a preview:

Voice commands on the new Moto X

- Goodnight: Turns on the Sleeping do-not-disturb mode in Moto Assist.
- Post to Facebook: Shares that oh-so-urgent status update that's just burning a hole inside you.
- Send WhatsApp message: Same, only over WhatsApp.
- What's Up? Tells you the time, and any unread notifications.
- What's this song? Listens to the beat. Tells you what's rocking.
- How far away is the moon? Just a basic Google search. (Answer: 238,900 miles.)
- Navigate home: If you have a home location noted in Google and need to know how to get there, this will help guide you there. (Or you can obviously navigate other places.)
- Take a selfie: We're not saying you should, but this will fire up the front-facing camera and count down from three. Be sure to remember to use duckface.
- When's my next meeting? Uses Google Now to see what you're about to be up to, or what it was your were supposed to be doing.
- Find my phone: A great old feature. Finds your phone.
- Remind me to pick up milk tonight: Sets a reminder to pick up milk. Or bread. Or cheese. Need anything else?
- Play Beethoven on YouTube: Because if there's one thing Beethoven had in mind all those years ago, it was being broadcast on the same medium as cat videos.
- Talk to me: Will announce incoming calls and texts and for a half-hour.
- Set alarm for 6 a.m. tomorrow: Boy, you sure do wake up early.
- Take a photo: Fires up the rear camera.
- Send text to Lisa Lewis: She'll be glad to hear from you. Or text anyone else in your contacts.
- Check voicemail: It's your mom. Give her a call back.
- Open Calendar: Because being late is for losers.
- Good morning: Wake up, talk to your phone, learn your next appointment.
- Get list of commands: This does what we just did here. Only not as funny.
- What's the weather? So you know what it's like outside without having to go outside.
- Call Lisa Lewis on mobile: That Lisa Lewis sure is popular. Or you could call anyone else.

The important part as you're looking at this list on your phone in the Moto Voice app are all the words in bold. Those are the actions. You knew that, of course.

Everything is so perfect with this phone, its jus the battery that is so shitty that is the main drawback for ppl to purchase this item, as what told by MKBHD and proven by Phone Arena's graph below:

Moto x always been an executive phone. Like me. Executives always work near power points so it never bothered them . As long it gives me full working hours battery is fine. But for people working at the out field that's the problem. Even for students that are very much at the field would like better battery life.

SIM unlock, so that you can use any other SIM other than theirs, bcs they don't want their phones to be used on other telcos. Kinda greedy I would say, bcs other telcos don't do this to their phones

Your sentence a bit confuse. The sim and phone are unlocked. other sim can be used with the phone, so what's the problem?

Not true. AT&T Moto X is locked with AT&T SIM, cant use other SIM. You had to call AT&T to unlock it, and most likely they wont allow.

No, it's not. No offense bro, but if you're familiar with the so-called smartphone thingy, you should be able to understand it easily. If I used another term 'phone unlock', people would perceive it as unlocking the phone's bootloader. That's why I didn't use that term. So, SIM unlock simply means to unlock the SIM, which is being locked by AT&T for the use with other SIMs other than theirs. It's as simple as that icon_rolleyes.gif But of course, like this fella above here Someonesim said, if you want to use the phone with other SIMs other than AT&T's, you need to unlock it, either by calling AT&T yourself, or you could buy a code, around $15. So, yeah. It's a bit of a hassle there. Calling AT&T is definitely ridiculous since you're in MY. So, another choice is to buy a code, and that, will require more money. Other telcos, for example T-Mobile or Verizon, they don't lock their SIM. It's what they call, 'factory unlock'. Meaning, the phones that are under their brand won't require SIM unlock. You can basically insert any SIM into the phone, without having to call them, or to buy a code. I hope it's clear now

No offense bro, but I guess you also don't know. Verizon phones with LTE come with 'factory unlock', same as T-Mobile. You can basically insert in any SIMs into their phones, and they'll work almost perfectly, with the exception of LTE. The fastest that it can reach is H+, which is faster than 3G

Even thou it is sucky, we will still be using it. We can't live without this, therefore telcos aren't improving!

Especially in Singapore, it is getting more and more expensive and data quotas are shrinking, in return they are giving you tonnes and tonnes of SMS which we barely use nowadays.

Telco getting very little profit from data, while SMS/call was charge per usage, thus big fat profit.

That's not what i'm trying to say:

Before 1st July 2012:

$39.90 plan will get you:

100 min call
500 sms
12GB data

After 1st August 2014:

$39.90 price hiked to $42.90 plan will get you:

200 min call
1000 sms
2GB data

Calls and SMS doubled, data shrunk to 15% of what its used to be.

shocking.gif 12GB reduce to 2GB vmad.gif

This case, my statement will become "Telco earn little from data, thus reducing it so you'll always pay extra to add more quota ?"

My case similar also la, previously paid RM50 for 2GB data ( call/sms on per usage basis ), now signed another contract RM78 for free call/SMS but 1GB. Top up data, 1GB about RM30 mad.gif

Yes, $10.70/GB.

What's even worse, your speeds will be capped at 1Mbps despite paying extra!

What's the point for introducing CAT6 LTE where it averages at 190Mbps which is exhausted in slightly under 2 mins?

It's not so much about data consumption.

The latter processors have been proven to be more power efficient with lte than 3g. And yes I have made comparison personally.

Android Influencer: Motorola Senior Vice President Steve Horowitz

You can thank Motorola’s Senior Vice President of software engineering, Steve Horowitz, not only for helping with Android in its nascent stages, but for helping develop those neat always-on listening features that made Motorola’s phones worth lusting after again.

Which is why we were excited to briefly talk with Horowitz about what’s next for things like Touchless Control, and why Motorola won’t make its own interface on top of Google’s stock Android.

Greenbot: One of the Moto X’s best software features is its always-on listening capability. When will we see a similar feature come to the Moto 360?

Horowitz: Moto 360 is the result of a great collaboration between Motorola and Google’s Android Wear team. Although not “always on,” it supports sophisticated voice control. In fact, voice is key to interaction with Moto 360 since you can’t easily fit a keyboard on your wrist! We’ve also introduced a new Bluetooth earbud called Moto Hint. This product offers an entirely voice-driven experience and you’ll see us work really hard over the coming months to ensure all these devices work seamlessly together and complement one another.

Greenbot: Why stick with stock Android for this second-generation Moto X? Why not go the same route as other Android OEMs and make your own interface overlay?

Horowitz: Rather than trying to “improve” Android or compete with its functions, we see our job as complementing it with great design and experiences like Moto Voice, Moto Display and Moto Assist. We’ve proven that our approach has fundamental and sustainable advantages over other Android OEMs, such as performance advantages and the ability to get upgrades out quickly. These things really matter to people. The fact that we’re the only company with this strategy also serves as point of differentiation. It really allows us to focus on things that matter most to our consumers rather than changing things just for the sake of change.

Simplicity has many, many user benefits. Our pure Android approach to software results in an end user experience that is faster, simpler, and more robust than ever. It also allows us to deliver important OS software updates with new enhancements, security fixes, and functionality faster than anyone else in the industry by a huge margin.

A New DROID Experience Arrives in 48 Hours

There’s a certain expectation when a smartphone carries the DROID name – strength, endurance, intelligence, and detail.

Strength

Think about what you put your phone through on a daily basis – it’s in your pocket with loose change, tossed into a purse with keys, sat upon if it’s in your back pocket and the accidental splash when it’s just one of those days. The DROID Turbo is designed with all that in mind with its Ballistic Nylon or Metalized Glass Fiber reinforced with DuPont™ Kevlar® fiber, scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3, and water-repellent nanocoating protecting the inside and out against spills.

Endurance

That “low battery” alert is something many of us dread, and it usually happens at the worst times. DROID Turbo has a battery that lasts up to 48 hours, so that means it’ll be a while before you see that low battery alert.

Eventually, the alert will appear, but it might be at a time when you don’t have the time to do a full charge of your phone. Only having a few minutes before heading out with friends, layovers in between flights, and many other countless scenarios – we’ve all been there.

The new DROID comes with a turbo charging feature so when you’re low on battery, a 15 minute charge can get you up to 8 hours of use. DROID Turbo comes with the Motorola turbo power charger in the box at no additional cost. And for added convenience, the new DROID is wireless charging capable.

Intelligence

A smartphone is exactly that, a smart phone. And DROID Turbo has smart features that make the most used features on the phone better. Moto Display wakes up the phone to show the time and notifications when you reach for the phone. You can also wave your hand over the screen to dismiss a phone call or silence an alarm. The Droid Zap app has also been enhanced with the Zap Zone feature that makes it easy to share pictures and videos with nearby friends you invite to your zone. Plus, Zap to TV uses Google Chromecast to create a slideshow on a big screen.

Smart features like these are best paired with a powerful processor. DROID Turbo has a 2.7GHz quad-core processor and has 3GB of RAM for multi-tasking and running your favorite apps very smoothly.

Detail

DROID Turbo has a 21-megapixel camera with 4K video capture and features a 5.2-inch Quad HD display meaning you will want to show off your photography to friends any chance you can whether it be in person or on social media. And when a picture moment happens you want to be fast enough not to miss it. Quick Capture feature lets you twist your wrist twice to launch the camera – no need to press any button or unlock any screens.

DROID Turbo: Power for Days, Charge in Minutes

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since we launched the original DROID. Since then, DROID smartphones have come to be known for speed, power and endurance, built to outperform your expectations and push the limits of what a smartphone can do.

And today, we’re excited to announce the latest in this line of premium smartphones: DROID Turbo.

From the beginning, DROID smartphones have come with leading-edge technology, including Verizon’s blazingly fast network speeds, exceptional battery life and the latest in innovative material design. And DROID Turbo is no exception. Designed to keep pace with you, DROID Turbo gives you ultimate power and performance without compromise featuring amazing specs wrapped into a package of cutting-edge materials:

- 48 hour battery. Zero compromise: Go up to 48 hours1 without stopping to recharge thanks to a 3900mAH battery, one of the largest ever put in a smartphone. Plus, when you charge DROID Turbo with the Motorola Turbo Charger, you get up to eight hours of power in a quick 15 minutes when you need it the most.2

- Processing power on overdrive: With the most powerful Qualcomm® processor, the quad-core 2.7 GHz Snapdragon™ 805 under its hood, DROID Turbo is a beast when it comes to multitasking and keeping up with you.

- Quad HD display. Four times the view: 5.2” Quad HD screen (4x resolution of HD) features industry-leading 565 ppi so image details pop, videos look smooth, and even the smallest type is easy to read.

- Pixel power: 21MP camera for capturing high-res pictures and movie-quality 4K video so life’s moments look their best.

Materials that break the mold: Choose from cutting-edge materials such as ballistic nylon or metalized glass fiber that offer a distinctive design while providing ultimate durability. Plus, underneath these cutting edge materials, DROID Turbo continues to sport Kevlar®, a material five times stronger than steel.

DROID Turbo also features the Verizon-exclusive DROID Zap app for fast and easy sharing with friends. Now with DROID Turbo, you can even Zap to TV or use your voice to Zap your screen.

Starting on October 30, DROID Turbo will be available with two storage options at Verizon.com. The 32GB DROID Turbo in Metallic Black, Metallic Red or Ballistic Nylon will be available for $199 with a two-year Verizon contract and the 64GB version available in Ballistic Nylon will be $249 with a two-year Verizon contract.

Better dont buy the droid turbo yet because the sim is locked and there are a lot of verizon bloatware in it. Wait until someone unlock it in forum. It should take around 2 weeks or more for the hacker..

US phones have different LTE band than MY. even though the droid ultra/maxx have global settings, we could only use up to H+ connection. yes, moto x did finally arrived here in MY but it was already too late. I agree with megat, MY market is tiny compared to India and South America. even though moto g was successful, I dont see lots of people here in MY using it. mostly samsung and lenovo and of course the iphone.

Looking at one of the hands on video, the turbo looks like doesnt have any sim placement. Probably hidden underneath the back cover?

Remember now, droid turbo hands on video on phoneare.com starting at the 2.00min where the guy talks about the button placement.

EDIT

Here, the author told that the sim slot is under the volume toggle, same as last year droid.

I'm fine with any one of them. It's not a big deal to me. Big deal to me is battery and camera, battery especially

I could, but my price will almost be the same as TechBug's. I don't know how Shirogawa manages to sell at those prices

I'm not sure where Brightstar gets their stocks, but most probably from either the UK, or HK. If one of these countries get that intl version of Droid Turbo, then there's a chance that Brightstar will bring it in

If you read here, verizon stated that they don't lock their 4G-LTE phones, the most important buying a verizon phones make sure that it's global ready. Cause that way, the phones can fall back to gsm/umts in other parts of the world that doesn't support cdma. As long as you pay the full retail price on the phone, verizon won't lock your phone.

My favorite Moto voice hotword:

"What's new?"

Then it will announce time, notification and calendar. So cool

Really love the motovoice function. Before sleep just say "good night" and it will automatically silence and sleep the phone.

It has been like that for as long as I know. The furthest the droid lineup went is India.

Unless Lenovo tries to turn things around but I don't see it that way. Guess they're trying to work Moto the old way, why compete with their own brand in Asia....??

Though I agreed it has very slim chance to reach us, but FYI this is no Droid line, but Moto Maxx. We used to have similar situation where Droid spec phones sold here ( in Malaysia ) as another name ( ie RAZR MAXX ), but given recent Motorola phones not vastly available here, this Moto Maxx that's targeted Latin America might not reach here.

No I have different thinking this because of "Moto" Branding.

Moto X, Moto G, Moto E all make it to Brightstar Malaysia, even the Moto 360. If you ever notice, all Moto branding are for Market outside of US.

Not just us, even you do some research on Brightstar HongKong, they have the same products like us.

So put you high hope and faith in "Moto" Brand will come to Malaysia.

And we're talking abt Moto Maxx I believe, and it's a totally diff case. This Brighstar company gets their products from HK, or perhaps the UK. If they're not released to either these two countries, then there's no way that they will be able to get the products

And I'm not surprised if Moto X makes its way here. But give it 8 months

But I don't understand why Brighstar brings in Motorola products in HK when the official page is still there

Ok. Look for other phone sad.gif

I'll say Lenovo is stupid if they try to merge their craptastic product with Motorola product.
Only advantage of Lenovo devices are the price compared to other devices. Their software & services are pretty bad. They still sell devices with Android 2.3 which I have no idea how they managed to pass CTS.

When Google took over Motorola they were in pretty deep shit. Too many products and the Moto Blur doh.gif ...
Motorola under Google made an excellent turnaround. IMO they are in good path to be financially stable. Lenovo is inheriting Moto in good position. Whether they can produce another think IBM PC division-like success story it'll be up to them.

Lenovo is a company which is very good in marketing and selling a product but sucks at developing it.

That's why they buy company with good development team and their part is to do massive marketing and selling.

They arent that stupid I think. Both Lenovo and Motorola brand had been successful at entry level phone, but at different market/region. Lenovo will need Motorola's brand effort and relationship to enter western market ( especially US where carrier rules )

Lenovo couldn't have bought Motorola at a better time. Just hope they can give all the support Motorola needs and not impede their way of developing products, or they will risk another crisis, similar to the one post-RAZR.

Wait for it, rumored Nokia are planning for comeback on high end smartphone, their best bet will be Meego ( if they able to revive it ) or Android ( possible now without Microsux interference ). They just need to wait 18 months ( agreement with Microsoft was Nokia brand will be under Microsoft for 18 months )

Moto X vs. Droid Turbo: Which one's right for you?

user posted image
Some practical guidance on two of the year's most interesting phones -- based on weeks of living with them and comparing them side by side.

QUOTE
Two sibling phones. One is sleek and sophisticated -- beautiful to the eye and a treat to hold. The other is more industrial -- far less refined but super rugged and oozing with power. So which is the better device?

With Motorola's 2014 Moto X and Droid Turbo now on store shelves, that's the question many a smartphone shopper will soon be facing. The Moto X and Droid Turbo share lots of DNA and are incredibly similar -- yet at the same time, they're very different types of devices.

The real question, then, isn't which is better but rather which is right for you. And after living with both phones for a fair amount of time, I think I can help you sort that out.

Hey, what about the other stuff?!

Yeah, yeah -- I know: The Droid Turbo has a Quad HD display while the Moto X has a 1080p screen and the Turbo has a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB of RAM while the X has a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM. If specs alone excite you, by all means factor that into your decision.

For most of us, though, those numbers really don't matter. After living with both devices individually and then studying them closely side by side, I can tell you that there's no real discernible difference between the phones when it comes to performance or display quality. Higher numbers don't automatically equal a superior experience, and in real-world terms, these changes don't amount to much.
Putting it all together...

All right -- so which phone's right for you? If you still aren't sure, I'd say this:

• If you're committed to Verizon and need a durable phone and/or exceptional stamina -- and don't mind paying a bit more for it -- the Droid Turbo is a great choice to consider. It gives you a lot of the standout qualities of the Moto X in a more rugged body and with battery life that'll support even the most extreme usage habits.

• If you value specs above all else and want the most cutting-edge hardware regardless of its practical impact -- and are committed to Verizon -- go with the Droid Turbo. It's got what you want.

• If you just prefer the rugged and industrial vibe -- and (you guessed it) are okay with using Verizon -- get the Turbo. Easy enough, right?

If those conditions don't apply to you, I'd recommend the Moto X. From its physical form and design to its speaker, software, and button setup, it's generally just the nicer and more pleasant-to-use device -- not to mention the cheaper option and the more versatile phone in terms of carrier compatibility. True, its stamina isn't at the exceptionally high level of the Turbo's, but the majority of smartphone users also don't typically need battery life quite that strong.

It all comes down to your own priorities and what tradeoffs you're willing to make to get them. Think of it like this: The Droid Turbo is a specialty phone for folks who need extreme stamina and/or an extra-rugged device -- and are willing to sacrifice things like sleekness and design in exchange for those qualities. The Moto X is the more mainstream phone that strikes a balance to provide the best all-around experience for most people.

Our ever-expanding array of options can get a little overwhelming, but that's why I'm here to help. At the end of the day, choice is a wonderful thing -- and boy, oh boy, do we have a lot of it.

I'd pick Moto X any day if it had 3900 mAh

DROID Turbo Review

The Verdict

The DROID Turbo is a beast of a phone that has nothing but top tier specs at a surprisingly reasonable price. There are few phones that match this new Motorola smartphone on paper and in real world use. While the camera needs a software update soon to improve its speed and consistency, there are few things wrong with the Turbo. It feels premium, looks better than previous DROID phones, has excellent battery life, and performs flawlessly.

I watched the video review. The camera shutter speed really slow and is not even par with my Moto G.

Not a big fans of capacitive button as well. Only if the capacitive button are as dim as OnePlus One or Oppo Find 7 and able to turn on on-screen navigation, that would be bonus!

I was halfway downloading the update. Suddenly it stopped and the update gone. I think many manage to get the update, they open it for about 2 hours.

Great moto voice experience + fastest android update = total bliss

Nexus 6 probably better spec on paper but without the moto experience, it just like buying huawei or xiaomi but higher price

I thought DROID Turbo only available from Verizon US? You need to purchase the phone together with a plan even though you pay full price? You can check the Verizon website and try to buy a phone. It forces you to choose a plan.

I wonder how this guy bought it without a plan?

Try to buy honor 6 and nexus 6 and use it for a week. You will feel the same.

Try to buy note4 and honor 6, the experience is different because of the stylus.

Try Droid turbo and nexus 6 for another week, the Moto feature will surely give more user experience.

Hard to explain in words, you need to experience it yourself

Comparing Nexus with Xiaomi and Huawei is a total joke, an offense to the Android world I can say.

User experience? Nexus devices should provide the best Android experience for users, period. Remember what's the main purpose of the Nexus programme? To provide a benchmark on software and hardware for the OEMs on designing their Android phones. It's the way Google intended us to use Android.

And how can you conclude on how the Nexus 6 feels when the device was just out recently and even those US citizens are having difficulties to buy them? doh.gif

I guess you never used a nexus device before to come out with such statement.
Just saying.

Well, different people have different need or preferences. Some prefer more feature on Xiaomi/Huawei rather than Pure Android on Nexus (average people call it too "plain" taste). doh.gif

those people complaint complaint too "plain" will never appreciate nexus. Nexus is purposely delivered in that way and it's build to unlock, for any possibility of soft mod (also a developer phone)

and also those ppl never root their phone will never understand the "freedom". once root, it's like unlock the golden gate. I don't like stay stock, coz it's fully rely on OEM update, if OEM turtle speed or lousy, who is suffering? HTC, Moto so far is doing good!

Very good example here is Galaxy Nexus. today, gnex user still got dev community support for unofficial update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. You tell me which 3 years old ago Huawei model can benefit that? I guess not even taste KitKat yet.

No sure you ever used Nexus before. It's nothing you felt on other Android phones unless you flash AOSP ROM, even though you do that it might be buggy and thus not as good as Nexus. It's a weird feeling you must experienced by live under Nexus.

I am avoiding to become a fanboy but 90% of android user dont root their phone.

Without root, nexus is just another typical made in china phone. Yes the spec is great but the user experience is still the same.

I miss my s-pen in note3. The user experience let me draw, sketch and design my creativity that is not available in other android

The moto x give me another user experience to control smartphone without touch. Now i am going to buy google glass to complete the experience

I have tried nexus 5 before, just a typical phone if stay stock.

Nexus 6 is a great device. But the stock user experience is just the same as other phone (albeit bigger size)

Some nexus fanboy really cannot say anything about nexus.

A real loser because they only can use nexus for whole their life.

It's the new priority notification feature.
Basically it's like iOS's Do Not Disturb mode but much smarter.

Yup the do not disturb on Lollipop is really great. You can set time also if you the kind that always forgot to turn it on again.

So it's an official release then.Looks like Motorola manage to beat Nexus again.

It's fast because Moto has separated the moto voice, display etc app and put them on the playstore.

I guess nowadays Motorola is not 'blur' anymore.

Motorola Droid Turbo review: Power robot

Final words

Motorola Droid Turbo is a complete package - a no-compromise Android powerhouse that is fit to accommodate even the most discerning power user. The smartphone blends high performance hardware, innovative materials, and stellar battery endurance into a compact, superbly built package.

Android flagships often rely on their specs to succeed and the Droid Turbo is as prepared as its gets. It is the best-equipped device that doesn't carry a phablet moniker - only larger beasts come close to its hardware chops.
Key review findings

- The materials used in the making of the device are superb and innovative
- At 565ppi, the 5.2" QHD display is the sharpest available at the moment on any smartphone
- Stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat is responsive and the fast-track Android update schedule is great
- The chipset and its performance are stellar
- Still camera performance is good; video capture is excellent
- Audio quality could be better
- Battery endurance is impressive, more than makes up for the thickness
- Motorola's Turbo Charger is a must-have for every smartphone
- Retail availability is way too limited (at least for the time being)

The performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset is solid as expected. Motorola Droid Turbo is up to any task you throw at it.

The 5.2" QHD display is gorgeous and offers more pixels than you can shake a stick at. It offers good contrast, viewing angles, sunlight legibility, and punchy, if a tad inaccurate colors.

With 3,900mAh on tap, the Droid Turbo displayed good battery performance. The handset didn't top our chart, but it is the longest-lasting offering with QHD display at the moment.

Build quality has traditionally been a key feature of the Motorola Droid family and the Turbo is no exception. We really like the Ballistic Nylon option - there is nothing else on the market today like it. The improved DuPont Kevlar is also quite nice, as is the water repellency of the smartphone.

With 21 megapixels, dual-LED flash, and UHD video recording, the camera of the smartphone doesn't disappoint either. It isn't quite the best we have tested, but it isn't far off the top either - you will not be disappointed by the images and the videos you have captured with it.

Stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat is light on its feet and easy to customize. Motorola's additions are clever and unobtrusive. Verizon's extensive bloatware is manageable - you can disable most of the preloaded apps.

The lack of stereo speakers and a microSD card slot are what keep the Motorola Droid Turbo away from being absolutely perfect. The well-sorted front-facing mono speaker and the available 64GB option partially make up for the lack though.

Hmm, isn't the Star icon supposed to be one of Lollipop's new notification feature? Because I swear I have it too on my N5.

Or maybe it's a specific indicator for Moto's 'innovative user experience' exclusive to Moto X. whistling.gif whistling.gif

It's a lollipop feature. From androidcentral forum

"It is to indicate if you set "priority notifications" in the do not disturb mode. You can access this menu when you press the volume button."

MotoTips for Using Android 5.0, Lollipop on Your Moto Phone

So you’re a Moto user and one of the first in the world to use Android 5.0, Lollipop, which we began rolling out recently—what should you do next with your phone?

As part of our work as consumer experience designers, we’ve had a chance to get familiar with this new release and wanted to share a few tips and tricks for getting the most out of what Lollipop has to offer.

Check out the short videos we’ve put together for you below. It’s our job to talk to consumers (like you!) to improve our products, so let us know how you like them and if there’s anything else you’d like to know. If you’ve discovered any of your own favorite #MotoTips, please share them on Twitter using the hashtag #MotoTips.

Finding Your Phone With the New Motorola Keylink

user posted image

Here’s an old situation: you haven’t gone very far but you know you’re missing something. You check your pockets, maybe rifle through your bag. Where did your phone go?

Here’s a new solution: Motorola Keylink.

Keylink is a small device that you attach to your keychain. Using the Motorola Connect app on your phone, you can connect your keys to your phone in case either tends to wander off. * If your phone decides to play hide and seek with you, you can press a button on Keylink to make it ring up to 100 feet away. Or if you keys get a similar idea, you can use the Motorola Connect App to make Keylink ring.

The great thing is Keylink is compatible with Android and iOS devices. Simply download the Motorola Connect app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store today to get started.

If you own Moto X (2nd gen.), Droid Turbo or a phone running Android 5.0, Lollipop, you can use your trusted device settings to enable the added ability to keep your phone unlocked when your keys are nearby. This way you don’t have to enter your password to use it. Just enable trusted devices by going into settings and then security.

The battery lasts upwards of a year and you can replace it with a coin cell battery found in any local drug or convenience store.

You can purchase one for $24.99 at Motorola.com and T-Mobile starting today.

Because Scalper won't come here and read. whistling.gif Garage Sale got many people monitor 24/7 try to scalp low price and sell at high price. Just like the Refurbished Nexus 7 2012 sold by Expansys already selling back at Garage Sale at higher RM50-100.
