Type 052D DDG Changsha under final stages of fitting out

Picture dated 8/10/2014 shows the PLA Navy's second Kunming-class Type 052D DDG in the final stages of fitting out the electronic systems after successful sea trials earlier this year. The Changsha, as this Type 052D DDG is christened is set to be fully operational by early 2015 at the latest. The PLA Navy has planned for 12 Kunming-class DDGs to be operational within the next decade.

The lead ship of the Type-052D DDG, the Kunming, is currently conducting exercise drills in the South China Sea.

Giraffe 4A combines air surveillance, air defence, artillery and naval radar functionality in a single system. In addition to this, its ability to estimate incoming threats means it also works as a weapon locating system. Giraffe 4A not only switches instantly between these tasks but also performs them all simultaneously.

With over 1500 modules, Giraffe 4A is engineered for adaptation. It's the radar system for the future.
SAAB

should get this for our new radar system it long range, powerful and and multifunctional for all 3 branch of our armed forced. can even target lockout for SAM system

although the GM400 is good but it not really mobile and multifunctional laugh.gif

Difference between VLS launchers of Type 052C (left) and Type 052D (right).

Instead of using the Type 052C's 'hot-launch' system (where a missile's rocket is ignited inside a launch tube) with an exhaust vent located at the center of each missile cluster (can be seen in the pictures above), the Type 052D is using a new, more modular system in which each individual missile container has its own exhaust vent, as used by modern western VLS systems. This reduces the stresses and potential damage due to the shock and heat of 'hot-launch'systems can do to a ship's superstructure.

This system also enables some missiles to use a 'cold-launch' system, where the missile is ejected out of the container by a canister of propellant gas before the rocket system of the missiles is ignited. This system allow some types of missiles, such as those with sensitive guidance systems that cannot endure a 'hot-launch' method to be carried and launched safely by the Type 052D DDG's. Each of these ships have space to house 64 canisters in any combination that is needed for the mission (smaller SAM missiles can be packed into two or four sub-canisters into a single canister space, while larger missiles such as cruise missiles or anti-ship missiles usually occupy the entire canister).

052C vls also can "cold-launch". only bcos this type of vls can't fit in multiple type missile so have to replace to new VLS.
