Royal Navy commissions 3 new Offshore Patrol Vessels Royal Navy's River-class OPV/CorvetteThe MoD plans to commission three new ocean-going Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Navy in a deal that will sustain jobs in the UK’s warship building industry. The new ships, which will be built by BAE Systems at their shipyards on the Clyde, will play a key role in counter-terrorism, counter-piracy and anti smuggling operations. The agreement with BAE Systems provides work for the company between the completion of the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers and the Type 26 Global Combat Ship, securing the vital skills needed to build the UK’s future warships. QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Oct 12 2014, 07:39 PM) Hahaha just 2 days since PM announced, I don't think they even have a working plan yet. just announce only lah, plan no so fast.... at lease 6 month to come out plan. not only jet but also logistic and pilot/ maintanance crew, family also need to think. also if they also have property in Butterworth may decide not go to Labuan now issue is Butterworth AFB have Hawk 108/208 unit 6+13 total 19. if move all easy, but if move any hawk 108 or 208 will give maintenance issue. my only think now if Hawk 208 move to labuan, Butterworth AFB less at lease 13 unit unit to patrol, it may impact to daily patrol, means need to used more frequent on F18? or other means Gov "signal" to buy new F-18 up to 24 unit, 6 unit give to Butterworth AFB other in Kuantan AFB... haha just speculation.... PLA Navy launches 23rd Type 056 OPV/Corvette Picture dated 11/10/2014 showing the launch of the 23rd ship in the Type 056 OPV/Corvette line. Note the hatch at the stern housing the VDS/Towed sonar ArrayThe PLA Navy have launched the 23rd Bengbu-class Type 056 OPV/Corvette. The vessel, whose name is still not officially announced, has been launched in a ceremony on 11/10/2014 at Shanghai Hudong Shipyards. The ship is the fifth ship of the (unofficially) so-called Type 056A ASW version of the Type 056 OPV/Corvette. Starting at hull number 593 (the Suqian), these specialized ASW versions of the Type 056 has a major modification from the basic versions by the addition of a variable depth/ towed sonar array on a special retractable crane located at the stern section of the ship. This will enable the Type 056A to be more efficient in using its sonar equipment to detect underwater targets rather than using a basic sonar system that is usually housed in the hull and whose performance may be effected by the hull noises of the ship itself. The PLA has planned the order of up to 10 Type 056 ships to be built to the Type 056A specification. Currently there are already four Type 056A ASW corvette in service with the PLA Navy(numbers 593, 594, 588 & 589). Other specialized Type 056 variants to be developed in the future are dedicated Anti-Surface, Anti-Aircraft and Command flagship versions. PLA Navy adopts new ASW helicopter Changhe Z-18F ASW Helicopter. Note the 360-degree SSR radar (nose), dipping sonar (center) and the sonobuoy dispensers(rear)In order to strengthen the Anti-Submarine capacity of its fleet, the PLA Navy has put into service the specialized Changhe Z-18F ASW helicopter. The Z-18F is derived from the Z-18 medium-lift utility transport helicopter already in service with the PLA Navy. The Z-18F is specially built with a large suite of integrated ASW features including a dipping sonar, 32x sonobuoy dispensers, a 360-degree surface search radar and a FLIR system. For anti-submarine duties, the Z-18F can be armed with up to 4 torpedoes. This marks a large improvement over the smaller Z-9C ASW helicopters, which is limited in equipment and endurance due to its smaller size. Although a useful addition to the PLA Navy arsenal, the 23 meter long, 13 ton Z-18F is too large and heavy to be operated by the PLA Navy's smaller frigates and destroyers. So for the time being, the Z-18F is limited to service on the Type 071 LPD ships and the Liaoning Aircraft Carrier. The Z-18F will eventually replace the elderly Ka-27 ASW helicopter and supplement the newer Z-9C ASW helicopters.
