Hi sifus,

Read up recently on the GTL process and my car is due for its oil change soon. So wanted to get the helix ultra 0w30 to try it out

Been searching high and low, tesco, aeon, shell stations, i am unable to find such viscosity being sold. 5w40 is common, yet i understand the 0w30 have been launched for some time.

Any idea where i may get it?

Btw, 5w40 pureplus are having promotion @ tesco & shell stations now.
*
Most probably only available at car dealer service center, I remembered seeing Hyundai advertised shell fully synthetic with W-30 grade before

Such a good read. Now I regret having to switch to a 5w40 oil.
But in my defence shell helix ultra are mostly that range. 0w30 is being sold at rm320!

Most modern cars now are recommended to use <30.

Arghhh..

Oil thinner and if frequent doing hard driving, no surprise the oil become water at 130'c and provides lesser protection to engine... Nowadays saw a few Honda insight hybrid starts emitting white smoke like those older car needing engine overhaul, could it be the effects of using xW20?

But how less protection is less?

Have you seen my used on analysis reports and how hard I've pushed by car?

No doubt oil film strength gets thinner at higher temperatures.
However it is very apparent that oil thickness is not the be all end all when it comes to modern engine oils.
*
haha, expected oil guru sure will shoot me de. of coz some will said used oil analysis, paper proof etc.
does your oil temp reached 130'c and above during your hard driving?

meanwhile, just some personal experience, an old altis 1.8 with minor oil consumption, 1litre/4000km on 5w30 semi-synthetic oil, loves the engine's quick acceleration, silence, fuel saving (could attributed to low weight oil, which that time i amazed with). oil level has been monitored and kept above middle mark of min-max dipstick.

until one unfortunate day, sent car for suspension/undercarriage to expert/racer for advice. racer took the car, hard revving constantly for 6,000rpm (rev > gear upshift > slow down > rev > gear downshift) for around 15 mins. the next day engine begins to underpowered, breathless, noisy, stubborn to rev up. emitting constant klack klack klack like pre-detonation noise when driving above 80km/h. some foreman said timing chain noise, some said sludge on vvt-i system, some said conrod bearing noise, no definite answer from numerous foreman. ended up trade-in to prevent "possible" catastrophic engine failure requiring overhaul in future.
similar noise from other youtube user

would the thicker engine oil helps if it were on 10w40 during the hard drive? nobody knows.

My thought would be your engine is still too new to show up long term assessment of accumulated damages done such as scuffed bearing etc. Would be great if the mileage exceeding 250k km without needing an overhaul which this is the range of typical Malaysian' 15 years old car on the road.

then it comes back to what i've mentioned about other variables and the fact that an engine is a wear and tear item to begin with, no?
*
yes. some manufacturer even stated engine life of 200,000km or 10 years without overhauling required..
so my initial intention after brief reading of the article douglas provided, would the engine oil provides protection after exceeding 130'c on xW-30 grade engine oil?
Temperature ( F )....Thickness
302...........................3
212..........................10
104..........................100
32..........................250 (rough estimate)

we all know on daily casual driving, oil temp around 100-110'c, the oil thickness still seems sufficient from above list, how about sudden hard driving with the oil thickness dropped to 3, does it still protect the engine?

Why not?

Do remember as well that If you're exceeding nominal temperatures on a normal sedan car 's engine, you're also exceeding its original specifications (I couldn't recall manufacturers stating engine life these days though) and would it be surprising if your engine wears faster?

Why just look at engine oils,  or specifically its thickness?
*
if it's still protecting the engine, good then..
it was long time ago i read somewhere proton designed the campro's engine life 200,000km or 10 years without overhauling. Not sure if it's from online lotus magazine. back then the gen2's owners manual calling for 20w50 mineral engine oil to be used. (dino oil era)

I'm not lol. Because just bought the Persona (second-hand car). And upon inspection the ATF oil is dirty as hell. So wanted to take the best for first service. But at least now I feel better knowing money is well spent?hahaha

The proton SP III is cheap but not synthetic right?

How bout this?

http://www.lazada.com.my/pennzoil-multi-ve...l-14163881.html

Is this ok for my Persona?
*
What? just new year and i saw local-made pennzoil multi-vehicle ATF now selling at RM130/4 litre? That's crazy...
I last bought it on June 2015 is RM65.00 from direct Pennzoil warehouse (same bottle packaging). And yes, the instruction behind the bottle stating it's compatible with Mitsubishi SP-III ATF. Not sure why their new website layout didn't write that...
http://pennzoil.my/wp-content/uploads/2016...O-catalogue.pdf

But some reviewer on forum has mentioned it wasn't a fully-synthetic ATF, tho no problem as I didn't expecting synthetic ATF for this pricing...

The salesperson came to me. Asked them the same thing.
Cannot answer me.

And their atf oil impressive, atf 6-speed and Cvt oil = one type.
To me, I will avoid them at all cost.
Manufacturers paid a lot by sending a lot samples to Mercedes for testing to obtain the approval, so it isn't that easy to obtain it. Exn? I doubt so

This...
We have seen multivehicle fully-syn ATF on market...
Multi-CVT ATF AIO oil could be the world's first!

real good, real full synthetic 0w20 engine oil does not come less than RM200.
have you tried perodua green bottle 0w20? it is so cheap that RM200 can even buy you 2 x 3L.
*
where can buy perodua green 0w20? last time i went their SC want to buy engine oil (to test their 5w30 semi-synthetic), but they require a Perodua car number plate and mileage in order to proceed, end up getting a friend's myvi number plate.. so much hassle.
maybe to buy the 0w20, i will need a bezza or axia number plate...

Too good to be true bro. My foreman friend told me Tes.. and Ae.. can get cheaper coming from their international market, yet still around 130-150 bucks. This is local company without presence in Europe, where do they get the source from? Sounds fishy.

Also shown in their website. Promo from 5-7 May. Should be fully synthetic (grey container), not able to zoom into the picture clearly.

No API donut?
*
So far seen shell, castrol engine oil product lineup selling in our market doesn't have API donut.
Those import from US or Europe different product line might have.

Are there any different on shell "pure plus logo"? Reflection/colour etc?
Last time saw some Russian forum doing comparison on the "pure plus logo" to identify counterfeit product. Couldn't locate it now...

Edited:
Found, just to share. Hope it's genuine and good for all :-)

Well there's nothing unusual on shell pure plus logo between the 2 (tesco and giant). Both reflect the same degree of color where silver at bright and dark Grey at dark under different shade.

If you look closely at the second picture, tesco put up a tesco sticker at the back. Close up on the details tesco oil comes from Italy and giant one comes from EU, might be Italy as well. Giant oil canister is slightly softer though but guess it just different batch.

I use a T6 Cree LED torch light to check both oil gives the same shade of color.
*
Good analysis, is the bottle cap seal like the genuine one on the photo? I see the counterfeit one very obvious gap between cap and seal...

Speaking of origin from Italy... Been saw many forum member saying the castrol magnatec semi synthetic selling at tesco were very very old stock because of API SL only. But I found the stamped date usually just few months back, which is quite new. Curiosity brought me to castrol Italy website, found their castrol magnatec having same bottle with our tesco selling, and it's API SL as well. So now we can guess tesco's castrol magnatec and shell helix ultra source are from Italy..

I don't understand why castrol selling at Italy still selling API SL while API SN is norm everywhere? Perhaps this castrol magnatec series is under "lower range" of their product line, just as those mineral oil 20w50 selling at our country with lower API SJ/API SG?
