I'm visiting Cambodia end of this month. The route I will be taking is Phnom Penh - by bus - Battambang - by boat - Siem Reap.
Can anyone advise me on how's the weather like in Cambodia currently? Tonle Sap water levels good enough to take the boat?

QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 01:57 PM) dam hot n dam shining. Where can I find this delicious mutton soup? worst than KL. if u plan to visit the angkor at siem riep, bring a lot of shading. it could be so hot in the day, that u can't cover the whole afternoon. beer is very cheap only $1. avoid street food, very dirty can get diarrhea. bring charcoal pills, their pharmacist and clinics r shitty. bring US dollars. over there they got two prices, once they know u r foreigner which is obvious, they will charge u the foreigner rate. there is a market in phnom penh, well known for their pirated goods, but the t-shirts are bad quality. Nothing special abt russian mkt. go see the S-21...then u will appreciate life in merehsia... their mutton soup is dam delicious, if u dare u can try their fried grasshoppers. Can suggest me some nice places to eat in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh? QUOTE(twins9 @ Jul 4 2014, 03:37 PM) Not doing the tour, I'm transiting from Battambang to Siem Reap by boat |

QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 05:30 PM) phnom penh, i forgot which street..lah, their street got a lot of number one, like 108 lah, 110 lah. Worth a try, but I wanna try beef salad and fish amok. i think u gotta ask the hotel pipu. their mutton soup is like our steam boat. but also got high class restaurant...that offer this mutton soup. if u wanna ask for direction, at night you can stop by this chicago grill, the bar is own by a malaysian and a lot of msian expats hang out there. QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 05:31 PM) if u like guns, u can pay $100 to fire a AK-47. Some where after the airport..its an army camp. For $200 you can fire a RPG. No... no thanks Would like to try the hot air balloon though |

QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 05:45 PM) not sure if they hv hot air baloon. i wouldn't trust anything by cambodians. Sounds like a very bad experience my hotel, air cond rosak...they move me to 3 to 4 other rooms, the air cond still rosak. i send my laundry to wash...end up i receive 3 additional underwear from strangers...euuuuu their pipu very blur blur one ah. some time ask them to do something, very vomit blood. 5am..outside my hotel room, i already hear the cambodians hon hon..yeah they like to hon one...their road all jam like hell...travel 10km need 2 hours. then when car coming..the pedestrian just gently walk to cross the street like they are king..car have to stop for them. motorbike, they try to cram 5 people sit on it...heck once i saw 12 people sit on one motorbike...they put a trailer behind the motorbike. their wet market ah, better dun buy from there. when my company van pass one wet market...i saw the meat black color..ya know why? Because the black color are the flies that cover the meat...then the stray dog come the air liur all over the meat display..the hawker also dun care..thsi is why i so afraid to eat in their hawker stalls. but they are very good in roasting pork...dam delicious. their rice quality is excellent. just be careful of some of their dishes. I once ate some kind of wierd cake..the canteen operator was selling...it taste like burn ants add with vinegar..the taste never got out of my mouth for days. morning all the lady there like to walk in pyjamas...then put a lot of bedak on the face. moment u walk out from ur hotel entrance, everybody come out to kacao u...ask u wanna go for massage lah? motorbikers ask u if u need a lift lah? tuk tuk ask u if u need a lift lah? Every time i come out i kena that, even when i walk two blocks away to the minimarket next to my hotel...they so stupid one...still wanna ask me if i wanna pay $2 to ride their bike. very harrassing lah. QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 07:30 PM) i can't recall when is the raining season go check wikipedia lah. i was there two years ago...but i advice u better go during full sunshine. I see, I'm going during wet season their rain is worst than ours. when it pours it is like waterfall. then banjir everywhere. their infrastructure is horrible...rain sikit pun banjir. some more the land very parch, not like our dense jungle, dusty roads and all, so when rain easily banjir. phnom penh is between two gigantic rivers, mekong and one call tonle bassac (something like that, my khmer is a bit rusty)...so when rain they overflow. QUOTE(manickam123 @ Jul 4 2014, 07:32 PM) take their taxi lah...6 hours ride. Taxi mahal very special one, somehow they can fit 4 people in the front with the driver. |

The weather is very hot. Don't eat the food at the hawker or stalls.
Couldn't also trust their bottled water, because it might have contaminated. Last time I went there, I had diarrhea. But maybe it was just me because the other people in that group seems ok. If you're muslim, there are few halal restaurant operated by the malay. But still their food taste weird. I almost havent got the appetite to eat anything there. |

IF you don't find fault with people in the first place. |

Been to Cambodia last year. It's a great place to visit if you want to learn the history of the nation there, how the Khmer fell by Communists cruelty. I recommend you visit the Killing Field in PP.
Siem Reap is a beautiful place, away from the hassle of the big city. It's peaceful and I travel by bicycle only to discover the whole town. I guess you have planned all the place of interest over there to be visited so I won't talk into detail about that. If you want to take the tuk tuk, let the hotel you're staying arrange it for you. The price should be cheaper if you do it like that. There's a Malaysian owned curry house in Siem Reap (I forgot the name), visit it if you have the time to. Safety in Cambodia is one thing that you should be concerned about. Beware, really beware of pickpockets. Like any other traveller would do, keep your cash in few places, don't bulk it all into your wallet. People there will look into any opportunity to dig out your cash from your pocket, be it by buying their souvenirs to even selling you marijuana by the side of the road. Just be extra careful. And if you plan to cheong, I suggest just keep that little brother inside the pants and forget about it. Unless you have someone over there that really knows a good place to Cheong and you cannot tahan sangat dah, then only take the risk. Personal experience, Cheong price 20$(wah wah good price), I walked back home realizing 100 Ringgit (I have MYR still at that time just in case) was stolen, while my friend lost 200$ off his wallet. The trick is they put a cloth hanger just beside the door, the girl will hang your clothes for you over there, and when you syiok banging the girl (which they won't change position so that you won't be facing your clothes), someone from outside the room will sneak in and take your money. It sucks bad(both the sex & the loss) and I stopped cheonging ever since. There's a Muslim village you might be interested to check out in Siem Reap. Muslims there can talk Malay very well (they say their religious teachers usually comes from Malaysia) and they're very helpful to show you around the places. Since Khmer people don't speak English much, and ppl at this village are the ones that I could talk to easily, I was very grateful for their assistance during my stay over there. |

If you have some time to spare, stop over at battambang. You can enjoy bamboo train over there. It's something that you can't find anywhere else. And the scenery is super gooding. I was awed by it. Besides bamboo train, visit Phnom sampeu. At night, enjoy the circus show. Theirs circus show is performed by students and the proceed from the show goes to them as well. Besides the show, you may opt to have buffet dinner at the circus compound. Food is nothing to shout about, but the little $$ we give them goes a long way.

I went for the most expensive one. but then looking at the condition, i dunno which part is worth the price I pay. I'm trying to avoid Sorya cause got many bad reviews Those that charge cheaper; I cannot imagine how the bus condition is gonna be |

Rain is very common there. Yes, it won't rain long but it will flooded if heavy rain at the border uphill. The water flowing down from the Thai border. This is according to the local people who I spoken to and also my driver.
Another possibility of the flooding is because it was just beside Tonle Sap Lake. |

Woot! Forgot which day here
Fun with the occasional rain but the people here are friendly! Oh ya the FOS in pub street in Siem Reap. Real FOS? Saw some round neck tees but don't know about the authenticity. Lol. |

Had very nice weather when I was there, sunny in the mornings and early afternoons, but late evenings confirm will rain. Dunno about now, cause I heard rainfall is heaviest around this time of the year. How was the weather? any review? me heading there for 4d3n. If only siem reap for 4D3N, I suggest you buy the 3 day angkor pass, cause there's not much to do in siem reap town during the day lol. Small circuit one day, big circuit second day, then banteay srei and phnom kulen waterfall on third day. Pricing wise, small circuit is about $15, big circuit about $18. Banteay srei and waterfall is about $60, entrance to phnom kulen is another additional $20 I think This post has been edited by gaeria84: Aug 15 2014, 11:39 AM |

Last time I did small circuit and some temples on big circuit. Would've costed me about $25 but managed to bargain down to $20. Better do full day for phnom kulen, cos going there is already going to cost you $60, and second, you can only go in the morning, come back in the afternoon. See if can negotiate with the driver to drop you off at bantey srei (need angkor pass) |

Any important spot throughout the temple I should visit? Not impossible, if you don't mind spending less time in each temple and willing to pay a lot more, then it's possible to do in one day. But very hectic la. probably get a 3 days pass then. where to find these driver? outside the temple? is the place cycle-able? Most interesting temples in Angkor Archaeology Park in the following order (my personal view) 1) Angkor Wat 2) Preah Khan 3) Ta Prohm 4) Bayon 5) Bantey Kdei & Srah Srang (Srah Srang is currently under renovation, just fyi) 6) Everything else About the driver, ask your hotel to arrange for you. The price is more or less the same. If you're fit, it's definitely cyclable, and is an experience all in its own. But you cover less temples this way. |

I stayed in Borei in Siem Reap. Looks fancy from the outside & the reception area even if the rooms are slightly old fashioned.
The service was.. awesome. Also, I booked it using a code taken from Tripadvisor so it was cheaper. Do check Tripadvisor for promotional codes too! This post has been edited by digitalz: Aug 15 2014, 09:48 PM |
