No, but I think they are very close.

Kesan buruk is a subset of masalah I guess.

Masalah means 'complications/problems" while kesan buruk means "negative impacts".

Can you give some examples you have problems with? haha

There are kesan baik and buruk, but im mentioning the kesan buruk only:
1. Berlaku penipuan dan penyelewengan
2. Produk yang dibeli tidak sama kualitinya
3. Gangguan dalam talian
4. Wujud persaingan yang hebat antara syarikat tempatan dan syarikat antarabangsa

If the question is asking masalah yang dihadapi:
1. Perkhidmatan tidak menyeluruh

Can I relate the 4 kesan buruk with masalah? My teacher said that it cannot be accepted if it is elaborated elseway.
Then, how to elaborate so that the isi shows 'kesan buruk' or 'masalah'?

Example 2:
Mengikut Laporan UNESCO, sejak tahun 1970-an, bekalan air bersih dunia didapati semakin berkurangan. Keadaan ini boleh menimbulkan beberapa masalah kepada manusia dan alam sekitar. Bincangkan.

So how to identify the 'kata kunci' of the essay question and what is the answer combination?


I was thinking: When we know that the first sentence of the question will give us a clue on kata kunci soalan and when the first sentence is just a description and can be ignored?

And I screwed badly for this essay and ALL MY POINTS ARE CONSIDERED 'TIDAK RELEVAN'.

My isi (only masalah):
1. Kesihatan manusia terjejas
2. Bekalan makanan manusia berkurang
3. Keadaan dunia menjadi huru-hara
4. Berlaku ketidakseimbangan ekosistem
5. Hidupan akuatik diancam

Can you tell me why these points are TOTALLY NOT RELEVANT with the question given?

Rather than saying they are irrelevant, I'm afraid to say that all your 5 points are insignificant. Your points are probably relevant to the problems, but they are least relevant to the solutions required. Let's localize the issue and table it as an agenda in the Parliament for discussion.

The main problem is clearly about the Clean Water Crisis. The purpose of the discussion is obviously to find viable solutions to the Clean Water Crisis. Mitigating your 5 sub-problems, however, does not solve the Clean Water Crisis.

1. improve healthcare quality
2. increase agricultural productivity
3. increase safety measures
4. rebalance the ecosystem
5. protect marine life

The more relevant approach is to bring up some issues that contribute to the Clean Water Crisis. So, first things first, you need to understand, What does Clean Water Crisis really mean?

Walaupun jumlah air tawar di Bumi tidak mempunyai perubahan dari masa ke masa dan ia terus dikitar semula melalui atmosfera, populasi penduduk dunia telah meletup. Ini bermakna setiap tahun, persaingan untuk mendapatkan bekalan air yang bersih and cukup untuk minum, memasak, mandi, dan kehidupan harian semakin bertambah.

Air tawar merupakan sebahagian kecil daripada semua air di Bumi. Walaupun hampir 70 peratus daripada dunia diliputi oleh air, hanya 2.5 peratus daripada jumlah itu adalah tawar. Selebihnya adalah masin dan berasaskan laut. Namun begitu, hanya 1 peratus sahaja daripada air tawar itu mudah didapati, dengan kebanyakannya terperangkap dalam glasier dan salji. Hakikatnya, hanya terdapat 0.007 peratus air di Bumi boleh diguna untuk menampung kehidupan 6.8 bilion penduduknya.

We did this exact same question in class but like you, I thought the question only ask for masalah. And my teacher said the same thing which is Punca + Masalah. But between the two sentences in the question, we have 'Hal ini disebabkan oleh beberapa punca.' Not sure if my teacher added it in himself or it was originally in the question.


I want to know too.


The question is asking for both punca and masalah. But what scgoh gave are points relating to the masalah as in effects of the crisis on humans and the environment rather than the causes of the crisis itself. That means those 5 points are not 5 sub-problems which needs to be mitigated but are 5 effects caused by the water crisis. Hope I'm not getting confused myself lol.

Umm....I'm sorry but I personally think there's no difference between 'masalah' and 'kesan buruk' for these two examples.

But I've not touch PA for almost a year, so I can't give an accurate answer. Sorry.

Anyway, regarding isu 2, there's actually two facts you need to discuss.

Normally if the question contains 2 sentences, then you have to be careful. The first one may seem negligible but it usually is a topic you need to discuss.

Could you explain 5+0, 3+2,... ?

5+0 means for the essay, there should be 5 points on topic A, and 0 points on topic B.

3+2 means for the essay, there should be 3 points on topic A, and 2 points on topic B. It can be either 3+2, or 2+3, depending on the individual choice but he must write at least 2 points on each topic.

Does the Student have to complete both topics?

If the essay asks the students to discuss two topics, then the students are required to write their essay in 3+2 format.

Yes, the student must complete both topics.

This is where most students have problems with. Normally, one topic is very obvious, while the other one may exist or may not exist, but if it exists, it normally is seemingly negligible.

For example, this topic:
"Mengikut Laporan UNESCO, sejak tahun 1970-an, bekalan air bersih dunia didapati semakin berkurangan. Keadaan ini boleh menimbulkan beberapa masalah kepada manusia dan alam sekitar. Bincangkan."

There are two topics to discuss
1) first topic in first sentence - the students are required to explain why bekalan air dunia semakin berkurangan
2) second topic in second sentence - masalah kepada manusia dan alam sekitar.

Confusing, ya. But as I've said, if there are two sentences or more in the questions, best to be alert.

After getting the explanations from Just Visiting By, I've modeled this linguistic technique as a general approach to test the water.

Do you feel troubled as if you are emotionally affected by the first sentence of the statement?

If you do, then it is either 2+3 or 3+2.

If you don't, then it is plausibly 5+0.
