1. Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd (PSSB), the company controlled by Syed Mokhtar was awarded a 15-year concession by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to develop the Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) infrastructure and network facilities.

2. A total of two million Set-Top boxes (STB) will be given out free to the under privilege and the needy.

3. The recipients will be chosen from the E-Kaseh and the Bantuan Rakyat1Malaysia (BR1M) database. However, urban citizens are excluded.

4. Mohamed Redzwan said by June 17, 2016, 98 per cent of the Malaysian population will be able to migrate from analogue to the DTT system.

5. Current Astro subscribers need not to purchase another set-top box.

6. The transition from analogue to digital will begin from Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Perlis, kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka dan Johor before reaching Selangor, Putrajaya and Klang Valley in the last phase.

7. Minister of Communication and Multimedia Ahmad Shabery Cheek said RTM will have seven channels on its platform and it can be used by Media Prime too.

8. Five services will eventually be offered, namely TV services, radio services, connected services (which includes catch-up TV, online games and video on-demand, amongst others), t-commerce (television commerce) and soft services (e-learning applications, SMS voting, etc).

9. China Press reported that the analogue transmission system in Malaysia will be shut down in June 2016. There will be 30 channels at the beginning, including 9 HD channels.

10. MyTV, a special purpose vehicle set up by Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, said five core services for the digital terrestrial television (DTT) switchover will be launched in Q2 2015.

11. The Edge Malaysia reported that Malaysia will be adopting DVB-T2 technology for its digital television services. The initial migration to digital will be for government-owned and private stations, namely TV1,TV2, TV3, ntv7, 8TV, TV9, TV Al-Hijrah and Bernama TV.

12. The Sun quoted Multimedia and Communications Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek as saying that DTTB project is expected to be completed and implemented by 2017.

13. MyTV plans to introduce 30 channels initially, followed by another 30 channels over the next two years. By the end of 2019, it will have a total 80 channels on its platform, according to the company.

14. Currently, MyTV is talking to many content owners, business owners and brands, to try and convince them to launch their own channels on its platform.

15. On 7/4/2015, Ahmad Shabery Cheek said DTTB tests were expected to begin at the end of April via the transmitting stations in Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan, in Pahang; Bukit Besar in Terengganu and Machang in Kelantan.

16. On 4/7/2015, the minister announced that digital television services will be available across the country by the end of next year.

Puncak Semangat said they will cooperate with TM. However, if you are watching digital channels through Astro platform, service disruption is almost a sure thing.

QUOTE

as far as i know RTM has been broadcasting DVB for quite some time now but only in klang valley and on trial basis. I bought a LCD tv monitor from Singapore about 4.5 years ago which has digital tuner and can receive RTM DVB broadcast. But RTM being so useless and boring, I hardly tune in and I don't even know if they are still doing it.

The DVB broadcast from RTM has more than just 2 channels which includes their own music tv channel (not MTV) and some radio programming.

Mine is unwatchable in heavy rain. I use a 130 MYR (shipping included) DVB-T2 decoder from China, plus the indoor antenna that I have been using for 10 years. Distortion is significant, compared to analog. In any case, I have the TM FTTH IPTV to fall back to when needed, but different channels.

No, HD Ready TV means the TV is capable of watching HD content, but it is not Full HD. HD Ready TV normally has the resolution of 1366 X 768 only.

Lol better buy LCD TV with digital tuner
*
Not sure if that can make any difference. I bought this 32-inch full HD LCD TV for 1999 MYR. I hope to use it for many many year to recoup the 'investment'. Perhaps I need a roof top antenna, but I do not want the TV to be fried by lightning.

I use regular antenna with booster and dunno what the cable name. The regular coaxial cable can get the digital signal.
*
yes, i also have tried using rf antenna cable, also can get the digital signal. so it really depends on your tv, got build in digital tuner or not.

what if government turn off analogue transmission by 2020, i think u are force to buy the box later on or u will not get any more free broadcast by just using the aerial.

Any TV will do, even CRT, but to enjoy the full experience, a full HDTV is preferred. If your TV doesn't have in-built digital TV, you will have to get one.

This is because most Klang Valley already covered by HSBB network to deliver digital TV content over fibre optic as free bundled service with your phone and internet.

How do you explain those who are deprived of digital TV outide Klang Valley with no fibre optic or cable TV?

Do you know digital broadcasting comes from your cellphone transmission towers? They are fed with fibre optic links to the base stations.

Why Njoi when got Netflix, Durian IPTV and HyppTV?

Around RM30 can get full package of channels.

C-band requires large dishes and very revealing. Very easy get detected by autorities and catches neighbour attention because illegal. At this kind of fiber optic internet age where got people still use those large dishes.

All pakai IPTV live streaming already like in Thailand and Vietnam.

The move to digital TV broadcast is happening

user posted image
GOING DIGITAL: Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd DTT deputy project director Mohamed Redzwan Yahya (left) and project director Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Yaacob fielding questions at the company's DTT press conference in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, the company awarded the concession to develop the Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT), hopes to achieve 85% coverage by population when the DTT service rolls out on April 16, 2015.

At a press conference recently, Mohamed Redzwan Yahya, Puncak Semangat’s DTT deputy project director outlined the plans the company has to make the move from the current analogue broadcast system for Malaysia’s free-to-air television to the new digital broadcast system.

“We have an outside-in rollout strategy, that means we go to the rural areas for analogue switch-off, then to the sub-urban and then finally to the urban areas in stages,” said Mohamed Redzwan.

The idea is that free-to-air television will benefit those in the rural areas the most, while urban and sub-urban areas already have paid satellite television services.

Five services will eventually be offered, namely TV services, radio services, connected services (which includes catch-up TV, online games and video on-demand, amongst others), t-commerce (television commerce) and soft services (e-learning applications, SMS voting, etc).

However, when the DTT service is initially offered, only TV services and radio services will be available, with the other three services to be eventually offered via home broadband networks.

Eventually, the DTT service cover some 98% of the population and will have the capacity to offer up to 80 television channels and between 30 to 40 radio stations.

To encourage adoption, Puncak Semangat is also subsidising and deploying some two million set top boxes with portable indoor antennas to eligible consumers.

According to Mohamed Redzwan, the company is still looking into how to select eligible recipients that will receive the set top boxes but said that the company will probably be drawing from the eKasih database.

Other consumers who are not eligible to receive the subsidised set top boxes will have to purchase it, although Puncak Niaga is still in discussions with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the final pricing for the set top boxes.

However, the decision to purchase set top boxes may eventually be moot, as the DTT service conforms to European Integrated Digital TV (IDTV) standards, which means that many consumer electronics manufacturers already produce HDTVs with the digital tuner required to decode the DTT service already built-in.

Nik Abdul Aziz bin Nik Yaacob, project director for Puncak Semangat, said that while HDTVs with such digital tuners are not common in this country right now, television manufacturers will most likely start selling sets that will be able to decode the DTT signal when the service gets more widespread here.

Key points:
1. The analogue transmission system in Malaysia will be shut down in June 2016.
2. There will be 30 digital channels at the beginning, including 9 HD and 21 SD channels.
3. The new digital system can support up to 80 digital channels, including 24 HD and 56 SD channels.
4. A governmental information channel will be available in selected areas.

i think what they meant was these channels will be relayed to astro platform as well, same as current media prima channels on astro

however, most likely astro will compress those "outsider" channels kaw kaw giving them inferior quality, hence it is recommended to just use a fishbone antenna with a separate STB to receive the terrestrial broadcast via DVB-T

Maybe they want to milk the first gen digital transmitters in Klang Valley for all it's worth first? Say only no digital in Klang Valley, actually DVB-T1 signal has been transmitting since 2006... Only difference is other states getting DVB-T2 instead first, before Klang Valley shut off T1 transmitters and force people to buy T2 tuners...

Only downside is Klang Valley cannot get HD, or will get HD in a form that some STBs cannot support (ie "Australian HD"- where MPEG-2 1080i signal is transmitted over DVB-T1 instead of H.264 over DVB-T2 like other countries, ie what they did for the 2008 Olympics).

Are those old digital transmitters owned by Puncak Semangat in the first place?

Buying them up might not be useful since they will probably use some newer tech like DVB-T2 on 700MHz band than previous.

Besides, Klang Valley already have extensive coverage of ABNxcess and HyppTV via HSBB.

They don't need terrestrial transmission that much due to high density of tall buildings.

I don't think so. I think those are owned by RTM themselves, since they only carry RTM signal.

And I thought they agree that they will not be transmitting TV on frequency above 700MHz already so can free up to telco and use to allow roaming for US visitors (and those foolish enough to buy AT&T MiFi which cannot support 2.6GHz LTE)

Not really. The problem with HyppTV and ABN is most households tend to have more than one TV. So far neither have plans for supplementary boxes. So the TV in the hall will have ABN, HyppTV, etc. But the one in the bedroom will need some other method (unless Android TV box or STB output splitting is used, and STB output splitting has it's own problems- ie the two TVs are forced to watch the same channel). Also there are Luddites that are perfectly happy with terrestrial and don't want Pay TV- my parents are among of them.

*
Which makes demand and need for Klang Valley residents less priority?

Most already subscribed UniFi at homes and given HyppTV STBs. ABNxcess is selling RM70 internet plus 50 TV channels bundled.

The priority are still more for the other urban cities in Malaysia.

Another thing is, even Klang Valley has a lot of "blind spots". Meru and Kapar, for example. Even today still don't have either ABN or UniFi, especially if it's housing estate outside of town area.

Malaysia ada tak ? why selective only for eligible ?

I agree with this. Instead of giving only to eligible, they should give a RM100 voucher to everyone. Even rich country like US give voucher to every citizen during their Digital transition. And I mean everyone. My friend got a voucher, and so did his mother who lived in the same house.

It's not like the decoders are expensive anyway. They only got US$20 voucher, and that's enough to get a baseline no-HD decoder with only analog out which is more than enough for most people who still using CRT TV.

Also, those with certain TV sets ie. the Sony W804A TVs, are already prepared- those can receive T2 signals out of the box.

The reason I heard from Thai people is, most of them feel that analog UHF & CRT TV still usable why to change ? If govt force them to adapt because compulsory to switch off ANALOG signal, then authority should provide financial assistance !

Free-to-air TV to go digital soon

user posted image
Ahmad Shabery (right) having a light moment with Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd deputy project director Mohamed Redzwan Yahya after launching the MYTV digital terrestrial TV services at Sime Darby Convention Centre.

PETALING JAYA: Free-to-air television viewers will have access to more channels and greater interactivity with an impending switch from analogue broadcast to a new era of digital TV.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) project next year would transform Malaysia into an advanced broadcasting hub in the region.

The DTT technology offers high quality TV and radio services, connected services (Catch-Up TV, online games, video-on-demand, T-commerce (television commerce) and soft services (e-learning and SMS voting) via broadband application.

Ahmad Shabery said the idea was mooted when many people asked him to give more time to air parliamentary sittings on TV.

“The Government wants to be open and allow the public to see their MPs debating. But there are constraints including low spectrum and frequency under the analogue broadcast system,” he said in his speech during the MYTV DTT Transformation launch here on Wednesday night.

Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd director Datuk Hilmi Mohd Noor said the company would ensure that the project would be completed within two years to benefit some six million households in the country.

“DTT services will be rolled out in four phases, starting in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang next year.

“This will be followed by Phase 2 in Sabah and Sarawak, Phase 3 in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor while the final phase will be implemented in Selangor, Klang Valley, Putrajaya and remaining parts of the country,” he said.

Puncak Semangat, which was awarded a 15-year concession by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, will invest RM2bil to develop DTT infrastructure and facilities.

Key points:
There will be 30 channels at the beginning, including 9 HD channels.

govt should FREE the high speed internet access before this digital tv implementation, that will boost economy more.

Digital TV is nothing new in this region. more content and choices are true. as it could be "programmed", it is very easy to control and monitor, that is why some monopolized party in some countries are eagerly to implement. pros and cons, we only have one choice, JUST TAKE IT

Talking rots again. No way we can be a broadcasting hub. We are the last one to turn off Analog (Other Asian countries turning off in 2015. Malaysia 2016). Add in censorship and monopoly there is zero chance. Censorship stifles creativity, monopoly destroys the economy.

Eh, the 4K broadcast is not for consumer consumption. There is no final transmission standard can handle 4K in fact. All digital TV standards currently cap out at 1080i. Not even 1080p. The 4k broadcast is just a trial by several standards bodies with no finalized specifications.

Besides, last two World Cup transmissions have HD feed, but only on assteruk...

Because Malaysia analog standard is PAL? DVB-T is primarily optimized for PAL countries.

Apparently only countries whose analog standard is NTSC is choosing ISDB-T or ATSC. Actually I'm puzzled as to why Philippines chose ISDB-T instead of ATSC like South Korea.

The purpose of the set top box is precisely that - to enable everyone without a digital tuner to continue watching TV when analog broadcast is turned off.

Can my LG Smart TV with DVB-T tuner tune in/scan for DVB-T2 Channels by 2015? I bought mine way back in 2010 before DVB-T2 was available (2011).
If no then guess that I'll have to purchase a set-top box then.
Anyway, hurrah for getting those less fortunate to get coverage first (Northern States Peninsular and Sabah & Sarawak). All this while most areas in Klang Valley enjoy the extra FTA Channels. A good move by the government so to say (I am not pro government or pro opposition but always will laud for things that benefit the rakyat).

I am afraid NO. DVB-T2 capable for both but DVB-T can't go for T2 reception. Ideology same as microsoft word 2013 can open .docx & doc file but microsoft word 2000 can only open .doc extension but not .docx

If you did get BR1M previously, they will give the DVB-T2 STB alongside with next BR1M giving. But it's a 50-50 chance. (Which is suppose on Jan '15).

Thanks for both reply. No chance for BR1M but if the price range for STB is below RM200 then should be ok as some people were willing to purchase the illegal Skybox/Openbox/Dreambox for more than that amount. Hopefully they'll give a tax incentive for that purchase.

No chance for BR1M but if the price range for STB is below RM200 then should be ok as some people were willing to purchase the illegal Skybox/Openbox/Dreambox for more than that amount. Hopefully they'll give a tax incentive for that purchase.

The retail price of a cheap DVB-T2 set top box is less than 100 MYR in China. Mine is about 80 MYR. Just search in taobao.

MMU, Eastool To Help Malaysia Switch To Digital TV

CYBERJAYA, July 9 (Bernama) -- The Multimedia University (MMU) will conduct a joint research with a Malaysian R&D-based Eastool Solution Sdn Bhd (Eastool) to facilitate a faster and smoother Malaysian Digital Terrestrial TV Broadcasting (DTTB) switch-over.

To facilitate the work, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MMU and Eastool was inked here Wednesday.

MMU was represented by its deputy dean of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Associate Prof Dr Lim Heng Siong, and Eastool, by its managing director Lim Seng Swee.

The research covers areas related to standards, technology, field reception issues, as well as improvements in telecommunications, wireless propagation, antenna design and power electronics.

Dr Lim (MMU) told Bernama that the implementation of DTTB would enable Malaysian broadcasters to move to fully digital platform, allowing them to offer even more TV and radio channels as compared to what was offered by the current analogue system.

"The broadcasting industry is very valuable, worth billions of ringgit and switching over to digital would mean both users and broadcasters could benefit due to having more viewing choices and lower operational costs," he said.

Meanwhile, Lim of Eastool, which has 20 years experience in developing and manufacturing broadcast equipment and components, said MMU would benefit by getting industrial updated and applying knowledge specifically in research and development.

According to him, under the Government's DTTB plans, Malaysia would have a digital multimedia hub and network of high, medium and low powered digital TV transmitters nationwide.

Initially, these will have the technical capability to carry up to 45 standard definition (SD) or 15 high definition (HD) digital television channels and the migration will involve government-owned, as well as private Malaysian TV stations, namely TV1, TV2, TV3, NTV7,8TV,TV9, TV Alhijrah and Bernama TV.

"The switch over will involve installation of new and upgraded equipment, not only for broadcasters and infrastructure owners, but also for consumers," he added.

Well, RTM channels+Bernama TV+TV-Alhijrah in Astro is already in digital, so that means nothing. For Media Prima channels however, they still showing in analogue one. Plus, MP channels PQ still hasn't improved much.

Yes, according to earlier news reports, digitised FTA channels will be made available on Astro platform. In other words, Astro subscribers can choose not to buy a separate set-top box.

Actually, those are from the T1 trial signal transmitting from KL Tower since 2006. My LG TV which only has T1 tuner can also receive that.

But yes, in final phase signal will be T2. I suspect that they will shut off the T1 transmitters by then.

The Japanese ISDB-T technology does have its advantage over DVB-T.

Its transmission tower can serve as double transmittrer for both TV and mobile devices(cellphones).

Like in Japan, SD channels are delivered to handphones using 1-Seg of the 13 segsments whcih deliver full HD channels.

Japan has been persuading Thailand and many South American countries such as Ecuador to consider their technology.

Though DVB-T2 is more advanced, it's already entered 2nd gen.

Wait till Japan introduce the 2nd gen ISDB-T technology.

In fact DVB-T is more expensive because different transmitters are required to separate standard HDTV and mobile phone broadcasts.

There is two flaws to ISDB from what I can see

Firstly, it means switching our workflow over to 60Hz. Malaysia historically uses 50Hz. ISDB is a 60Hz system. Cameras have to be changed (not a problem if the studio hasn't upgraded to HD yet, but if they have, it will be an expensive exercise to replace the 50Hz HD cam with 60Hz ones), and then lighting because using 60Hz camera with 50Hz lighting causes flicker. Converter equipment to play back older 50Hz PAL archived material will be needed at TV stations. Ultimately it will need TNB to change our country to 60Hz power just to eliminate flicker, which will cause issues with equipment hard wired for 50Hz like air conditioning, ice cream maker and even fridge.

Secondly, ISDB requires use of mandatory license cards (B-CAS card), which equals bringing back TV license. While I don't mind paying for license if it will increase the quality of the TV shows airing, I do mind the risk that the money will only get songlap.

The Japanese ISDB-T system has a 1 stone kill 2 birds thing advantage by just using 1 unified transmitter.

While on paper DVB-T looks superior the implementation costs can easily double if you plan to reuse the same transmission for both mobile and home TV transmission. It already has 2nd gen specs out while ISDB-T is still in its 1st gen.

The westerners are good at cheating consumers to fork out more all the time.

Japan has a proven successful 1-Seg mobile TV market. It is already commercialized for many years.

Brazil improvised the tech by using more refined MPEG-4 compression tech.

Yes, but my point is, for us to adopt ISDB will require lots of changes to the country's infrastructure, even seemingly unrelated ones like power (otherwise if ISDB camera record anywhere still using 50Hz, light will be flickering because camera frame rate which is 60Hz cannot sync up with our 50Hz lighting). Also, ISDB mandates use of license card like assteruk which I'm not very fond of. DVB has license card implementation, but so far it's been optional.

As for mobile, well, most of us prefer IPTV solution on mobile anyway, since our mobile broadband infra is actually quite good.

I can still run my US imported Playstation on my TV and besides the whole upgrade requires many new equipment to be replaced including STBs, and flat screen HDTVs to properly view them.

Malaysian mobile infra is way overpriced. Our fixed line operator monopolizes the entire country's infra for themselves which is bad for OTT IPTV operators.

That's not the point.

Take your PS3 Eye, set it to NTSC, point it are flourescent light. This is the flickering that will knock ISDB flat in Malaysia. The reason for the flickering is straightforward- the camera, to meet ISDB official spec, has to work at 60Hz. Our Malaysian lighting operates at 50Hz. The flickering is caused by the camera sampling rate not matching the light flicker rate(fact: flourescent lights are actually flickering 50 times a second). Sure, some cameras can compensate for that by adjusting their frame rate then use an internal DSP to pull it back to 60 Hz, but there will be sharpness tradeoff. Only other option is for the whole country to change to 60Hz, or adopt DC lighting like LED lighting, overnight.

Also, mandatory B-CAS means that license will be forced upon the rakyat. I don't like the idea of being forced to pay license unless the songlap stops and I know that my money will be put into bringing in quality programming. After the MACC revealed corruption and songlap in RTM recently, I am not holding my breath.

Have 2 questions:

Will 2nd generation teletext (user interface with buttons, selections, menus and page no. / page layout similiar to a magazine or webpage with multimedia elements like text, graphics, pictures, sound, music and video) be launched or carried with either RTM or Puncak Semangat service coming from their television station like in countries like England etc.?

RTM needs to include more non malay programming in their channels to cater for all races. Content in Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil, Hindi and especially English must be included if RTM wishers to boost its audience and viewership.

They mention nothing about MHEG Digital Teletext. However they did mention that HBB and CatchUp TV will be a possibility eventuality, so not sure how they're going to go about it.

This I agree. But my big problem with them is they're dubbing English shows (especially cartoons) to Malay. That have to stop. You can dub Japanese to Malay, or Korean to Malay, but please leave English shows as-is. Either that or learn to use the NICAM system they already have to transmit bilingual.

MyTV to offer services a year earlier than planned

Source: http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/busines...er-than-planned

MyTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd will be launching its five core services for the digital terrestrial television (DTT) switchover in the second quarter of next year instead of after the analogue switch off in 2016, as originally intended.

The five services are TV and radio (both accessible via DTT broadcast), connected services, transaction commerce and soft services (accessible via broadband or 4G LTE).

MyTV chief commercial officer Haniza Ros Nasaruddin said the five services for the DTT project would be the key drivers of the company’s revenue.

“The five are a combination of the traditional revenue that’s now being applied in any other mature market and our own business model, which we are generating not just for MyTV but for content players to actually earn more on top of advertising revenue,” she said in an interview with The Edge Financial Daily.

“When it comes to the participation of viewers, there are some methods that we are going to introduce. The more it’s used, the more income will be generated,” she added.

MyTV chief operating officer Mohamed Redzwan Yahya said apart from advertising revenue, the company had worked out a number of other ways to collaborate with its subscribers.

“We offer subscriber management systems because we know who the owners of the set top boxes (STB) are, so we can work together with, say, a pay TV operator and go on a revenue share basis,” he said.

“We also have what we call a playout centre for new operators who do not want to invest in building a TV station but have content. This may be in line with broadcasters who want to go on retail, meaning they only want to transmit for a few hours a day,” said Redzwan.

MyTV cannot charge incumbent broadcasters like TV1, TV2, and TV3 for their services during the two year simulcast period — when both analogue and digital broadcasting services will be simultaneously available.

But new operators and content providers who have expressed interest in MyTV will not enjoy the same exemption.

“I can only say that the capacity we have may not be enough,” Redzwan said when asked who are the potential new parties that will subscribe to MyTV’s services.

MyTV is a special purpose vehicle set up by Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd to build and operate the infrastructure and network facilities for the DTT project. Puncak Semangat is wholly-owned by the Al-Bukhary group, which in turn is controlled by tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary.
MyTV’s shareholders are Altel Holdings Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Zainol Anwar and Datuk Abdullah Kadir Bacha.

The DTT project is part of a digital switchover initiative, in which analogue free-to-air broadcasting services will be replaced by digital transmission.

The initial migration to digital will be for government-owned and private stations, namely TV1, TV2, TV3, ntv7, 8TV, TV9, TV Al-Hijrah and Bernama TV.

Puncak Semangat was awarded the contract in April, beating REDtone Network Sdn Bhd and i-Media Broadcasting Solutions Sdn Bhd, which had initially raised eyebrows as many did not see Puncak Semangat as having the expertise to carry out the large-scale project.

To that, Redzwan said he was proud the core team responsible for the project was local.

“We know that other operators in Southeast Asia are looking at us and how we implement this. So there is that added pressure to prove that we can do it,” he said.

At the time of writing, MyTV was in the midst of finalising 16 or 17 tender packages for different components of the project, which would be opened for bidding possibly as early as the end of this month. – The Edge Financial Daily, August 18, 2014.

MyTV to offer services a year earlier than planned

MyTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd will be launching its five core services for the digital terrestrial television (DTT) switchover in the second quarter of next year instead of after the analogue switch off in 2016, as originally intended.

The five services are TV and radio (both accessible via DTT broadcast), connected services, transaction commerce and soft services (accessible via broadband or 4G LTE).

I hope they implement 2nd generation teletext or MHEG Digital Text or some form of new teletext. It will be beneficial; entertaintment and information on your television set at your finger tips. I remember the good old days of Beriteks. I had a TV with fastext and it was good. You could even view stock market and travel info on it besides other things.

But like you said, not sure how they go about implementing it.

I'm more like thinking they're going to reimplement TV license using DVB-CI shakehead.gif

Second generation teletext is also only for Analog systems, so implementing it then shutting down a year later is not feasible. I hope Infonet and Beriteks comes back as MHEG Digital Text services tho- I really miss teletext. Even when I already had Internet, I still relied on Teletext for EPG and time/date. Also some times used it to see plane schedules. My mom is the heaviest user of Text, use it to play her saham on KLSE. It was a great loss when RTM then TV3 shut it down.

Back in the day before Internet became affordable, every single TV in my house has Teletext. Even now all my TVs still support teletext (apparently Teletext is still being transmitted in Singapore so TV made for both markets still support it). Only that there has been no transmission since Media Prima shut down Infonet.

MCMC to optimise 700MHz spectrum usage

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking at ways to optimise the use of the 700MHz spectrum band for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services, said its chairman Datuk Sharil Tarmizi.

Spectrum is the range of radio frequencies that enables wireless communication.

“Spectrum is a finite resource. Once it’s finished, we can’t create more. But we can continuously optimise the use of the spectrum by utilising new technologies and improving spectrum modulation techniques,” he told The Edge Financial Daily in an interview yesterday.

Sharil cited the frequencies used by television broadcasters, where the current system of having one broadcast channel on one frequency can be consolidated to 12 to 15 standard definition (SD) broadcast channels on one frequency, thanks to the utilisation of new digital technology.

“The entire television space occupies the 470MHz to 742MHz frequencies. With digital TV coming onstream in the first quarter next year, this means that the frequencies used will be reduced to 470MHz to 698MHz.

“With that it will free up the 698 Mhz to 742 MHz spectrum, which can be allocated for LTE services. However, this can only happen after the analogue switch-off,” he said.

Earlier at a media briefing to unveil the Industry Performance Report 2013 yesterday, Sharil said the regulator will review the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrums awarded to various mobile players in the country to strengthen their service quality.

“We are looking at variety of option including auction, ‘beauty contest’, allocation or any combination of that. We will only make the decision after consulting all players.

“Should we choose to implement spectrum refarming, the aim is to allow telcos to provide better and quality service to consumers,” he said. Spectrum refarming is the process of reclaiming assigned spectrum to reapportion it to applicants.

The revision is to address the network congestion issue faced by telecommunications companies (telcos) and prepare them to tap into other value-added services such as mobile TV.

On the building of some 1,000 new towers to improve and increase the reach into rural parts of Malaysia, Sharil said MCMC is in the process of finalising the first round of tenders.

“We’ve run the first tender for 400 towers and we’re finalising that. We’ve got two more rounds of 300 towers each to go, but these will be all over the country and mostly in rural areas,” he said.
Sharil: We are going to rebalance the spectrum of all mobile operators. Photo by Chu Juck Seng

“We’ve also employed a tender for an undersea cable system connecting Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia and also a tender for 1Malaysia Internet centres for underserved groups in the city ... and we hope to get at least half of these projects completed by the end of the year,” he added.

According to MCMC’s Industry Performance Report 2013, about 42% or 18 million out of the 43 million mobile subscribers are 3G users, resulting in intermittent service interruptions.

Sharil said one of the solutions to address this is to refarm the spectrum.

For instance, a telco can do a spectrum refarming on its 1800MHz spectrum to provide 3G or 4G services. As such, telcos will be able to ease the congestion in their networks by diverting it to other spectrums instead of relying on 2100MHz or 2.6GHz primarily used for 3G and 4G services.

Meanwhile, MCMC is planning to narrow the gap of spectrum awarded to the big players and small players in the mobile telecommunication industry.

“We are going to rebalance the spectrum of all mobile operators,” Sharil said, adding that this was due to mobile players getting different spectrum allocations from the government.

“In a meeting last year, we decided to award 100MHz out of 2.6GHz spectrum to telcos which have more than 10 million subscribers, while awarding 50MHz to smaller players whose subscriber base is between 3 million and 5 million,” he said.

“Hence, the first thing that we need to do is to rebalance the spectrum awarded to all players,” he said.

Basicly, all Digital and analogue TV channels signal is "sticked" from 470MHz to 698MHz come next year. 698 Mhz to 742 MHz is reserved and to be opened to LTE one once analogue tv shutdown is completed. hmm.gif

TV Programming are so outdated nowadays.

Cable TV, satellite TV, digital terrestrial TVs don't matter much anymore when you have fast fibre optic internet in your house like SG.

1Gbps can bring you any TV channel you want with cheap Android TV boxes.

Most intl news channels already stream live feeds in FULL HD from their own sites.

You want premium entertainment stuffs such as the latest anime or Asian dramas, just pay a 1-time annual fee and forget about monthly subscriptions.

DTT rollout on track, with tenders to close mid-Oct

Source: http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/in-the-edge...se-mid-oct.html

KUALA LUMPUR: The rollout of the digital terrestrial television (DTT) broadcast project that is being carried out by MyTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd is on track, said a consultant engaged for the project.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of KL Converge, Orenda Kuantum Digital Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Shah Rul Izat Salam, said his consultancy firm has been monitoring the progress of MyTV (which is controlled by tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary).

“They (MyTV) have leased out all tenders to the goods suppliers. [Soon] they will award to the successful suppliers and start the rollout from next year,” he said.

Orenda Kuantum is part of the Maju Group conglomerate, which is into construction, property, infrastructure, services and manufacturing. Its chief executive chairman is Tan Sri Abu Sahid Mohamed.

Shah Rul Izat believes having Malaysia model its DTT project on lessons learnt from the digital switchover in Europe, America and Australia will benefit the Malaysian public and broadcasters, “because we have no time for trial and error”.

“We are using DVB-T2 technology, which is one step higher than what other countries [have chosen],” he added.

DVB-T2 technology stands for Digital Video Broadcasting-Second Generation Terrestrial, which is a system tranmistting compressed digital audio, video and other data in physical layer pipes. The higher bit rate makes it suitable for high-definition TV signals.

On whether MyTV would include satellite and cable service providers, Shah Rul Izat said it would not.

“Satellite or cable TV [has its] own group of viewers or subscribers. Most rural areas are still on terrestrial, so [this] is where our focus lies,” he said.

The DTT project is part of a digital switchover initiative, in which analogue free-to air broadcasting services will be replaced by digital transmission.

The initial migration to digital will be for government-owned and private stations, namely TV1,TV2, TV3, ntv7, 8TV, TV9, TV Al-Hijrah and Bernama TV.

Meanwhile, MyTV chief operating officer Mohamed Redzwan Yahya told The Edge Financial Daily that all tender packages relating to the project have been issued, and that all of them should close by mid-October.

MyTV is the special purpose vehicle set up by Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd to build and operate the infrastructure and network facilities for the DTT project. Puncak Semangat is wholly-owned by the Al-Bukhary Group, which in turn is controlled by Syed Mokhtar. Its other shareholders are Altel Holdings Sdn Bhd, Tan Sri Zainol Anwar and Datuk Abdullah Kadir Bacha.

Oh wow, TV3 in HD?
Yes, I agree with you that the logo should be transparent or smaller.

Let's look at some of the HD snapshots from other countries. Most of the channels feature small logo.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcast (DTTB) is expected to be completed and implemented by 2017.

Multimedia and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the project, which switches analog broadcasting to digital, is at the stage of building and preparation of infrastructure.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat today, he said the tender to build the infrastructure has been issued, and work has been carried out in East Malaysia before proceeding to the north of the peninsula and Klang Valley.

"Once the infrastructure is completed up north and in East Malaysia, the ministry will carry out a transition exercise where both analog and digital broadcasting will be done at the same time," he said in response to an oral question by Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun (DAP-Jelutong).

Ooi, in a supplementary question, asked Ahmad Shabery why the ministry was late in implementing the digital broadcast, which was supposed to begin in 2012, adding that the ministry was behind schedule in the implementation.

Ahmad Shabery agreed with Ooi, but added that the ministry had faced similar problems like other neighbouring countries like Thailand and Indonesia in implementing the system.

"These countries took time to start their digital and close their analog broadcasting," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: MYTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd has signed a RM1.06 billion framework agreement with Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ for the provision of infrastructure and network facilities for digital terrestrial television (DTT) services in Malaysia.

Under the framework agreement, TM will provide MYTV with DTT services for a period of 15 years with an annual contract value of RM70.47 million.

The deal will see TM providing MYTV with infrastructure and network services including terrestrial distribution network services, satellite distribution network services, broadcast contribution network services, station facilities and infrastructure services as well as operation and maintenance services.

The agreement also entails TM developing a terrestrial distribution network to connect MYTV's digital multimedia broadcasting hub to all 37 main transmitter sites, 10 regional hubs and two earth stations via a nationwide STM-1 ring network.

TM will also provide MYTV with the fibre broadcast network and system that will allow MYTV to deliver high quality picture and an improved overall quality of digital viewing experience.

"There are about 35 substations to be used for transmission towers, MYTV will rent from us. Besides infrastructure, we also provide operations and maintenance services," TM managing director Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa told reporters at the signing ceremony yesterday.

MYTV group CEO Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Yaacob said the DTT services will be available mid-2015 with an initial 30 channels in the first phase.

"We have identified at least for the next three years we will be spending slightly over RM1 billion to prepare the infrastructure. We are looking at various options for financing," he said, adding that there will be a number of gap filler towers that still need to be built.

On the cost of the set-top boxes (STB) required to enjoy the DTT services, he said it is finalising the price, which will be affordable and not burden the rakyat.

"We estimate total TV household about 6.8 million. On our commitment to the government, MYTV will give two million STBs to the needy folk. The rest we are in discussion with the government for the rest of the distribution. As far as the price is concerned, we hope to make some announcement by first or second quarter next year," said DTT deputy project director Mohamed Redzwan Yahya.

He said MYTV is at the tail end of tenders for its infrastructure packages and are in the midst of evaluation the tenders.

"We expect to make awards by end of the year. That should give us time to rollout and meet our commitments to the government by then," he said.

The DTT services will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase which will start in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang by mid-2015 aims to cover 85% of the population while the second phase aims to target 98% of the population nationwide by mid-2016.

QUOTE(leetan33 @ Nov 19 2014, 04:05 PM)

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumer TV, the first digital television station with its concept of providing consumer information and education, will begin its 24-hour broadcast at shopping complexes and other public areas nationwide on January 9, next year.

Its chief executive officer, Azmi Mohd Noor said the station would disseminate information on consumer activities through various entertainment and advertising programmes.

He said Consumer TV, with its theme of “Consumer Information Media”, would be presented in two languages, beginning with topics on consumerism at 7am until 11am followed by the consumer guide segment from 11am to 3pm.

“The consumer product segment which markets quality products will be from 3pm to 7pm and the consumer destination segment which discusses tourist spots in the country will be from 8pm to midnight. From midnight to 6am, we will screen a programme with local celebrities.”

“We will insert shopping guides and consumer complaint tips in the morning to provide information to viewers on the channels for complaints and tips on smart shopping,” he said.

Azmi said the station would also provide information on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) through advertisements.

“Considering that many people do not understand the GST which will be implemented from April, 2015, we think it is necessary to provide as much information on it to the public,” he said.

He added that the station, which began operating in September, could be viewed through the website www.tvpengguna.com and the smartphone application, TV Pengguna.

The channel can also be viewed at government offices and public transport areas such as the LRT and buses stations in the Klang Valley.

With its slogan of “Semuanya Untung” (Everybody Gains), the privately owned station has the cooperation and support of the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry in providing information and advertising.

Would it be worthwhile for me to buy the DVB-T2 decoder now? I found one at lazada at RM120. I don't qualify for BR1M so can forget about the free decoder

HDTV that has in-built DVB-T2 tuners won't need a set-top box. Astro subscribers need not to purchase another set-top box too.

Actually TV2 programs are not that bad really. But they will show quite late in the night. I know that they show Blue Bloods and also Scandal. If I am not mistaken Grimm is also shown on TV2. My TV has DVB-T tuner built in but since we're gonna use DVB-T2 then there's not much point there...

RTM channels is already in DVB-T, so it may take time to shifting for DVB-T2 one. Besides that, most TV nowadays comes with DVB-T2 tuner. #justsaying

MyTV has reported that it will charge over MYR12 million (USD3.3 million) for a standard definition channel per year to broadcasters for a 24-hour slot. It will initially offer over 30 channels; it will add 30 channels over the next two year and nearly 80 channels by 2019.

so they still air standard definition channel?
i thought all going HD after convert to digital, no?
12million a channel per year, is that cheap? laugh.gif

If it's worth it, yes probably. (In comparison, NHK World TV & KBS World is available over-the-air in America)

If it's Nationwide, that'll be great. If it's stays like now, it's bad.

The article is rather lengthy, so for those who're interested to read the full story, you can visit the link above.

Key points:

1. MyTV plans to introduce 30 channels initially, followed by another 30 channels over the next two years. By the end of 2019, it will have a total 80 channels on its platform, according to the company.
2. Currently, MyTV is talking to many content owners, business owners and brands, to try and convince them to launch their own channels on its platform.

No, you can use your DVB-T2-enabled TV to receive the digital channels, which you can't do so just yet until they officially launch it.
Alternatively, you may purchase a set-top box.

The MCMC Slides for Planet Digital does have some insight on some of the channels to be included but probably that is just in planning.
Take a look at page 13 of the slide. Seems like Nickelodeon and National Geographic will be in there somewhere, and even Discovery, CNN & Bloomberg is shown there. Hopefully the change is for the better.

Sam Irvine of Freeview (NZ I believe) was also one of the presenter. Is that hinting that Freeview is linking up to be on Malaysian FTA TV?

I don't care about the politics. What I know is that at least we're moving forward. We'll make do with the current FTA channels but once it picks up then we will probably end up spolit with too many choices to watch hahhahaha. I can't wait for the launch in June or Sept. Seems like Malaysia is looking to NZ for the implementation. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

I believe Astro will also free up some of their "FREE" channels for market capture purposes and maybe also jump in the bandwagon of their paid services through MYTV's DTT infrastructure. This will then open up more joint ventures between multinational networks (Asian, Europe, Oceania & not forgetting the US).
I foresee that we will definitely be spoilt for choices. I think the target dates will be pushed back some more as we can see in the slide for the 98% coverage seems to cover a lot of area particularly Sarawak, this will need a lot of investment $$$$$.

Ahmad Shabery: Two million free digital TV set-top boxes for the needy

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — Two million units of the set-top box will be distributed free of charge to selected low-income households to enable them watch digital TV broadcast when the service is introduced, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the set-top box would be given to recipients of the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) and e-Kasih poverty-eradication programmes.

"The digital TV broadcast cannot be received by television sets which use the analogue system. Many people in the rural areas do not subscribe to the Astro service and, as such, they should be given assistance.

"One of the conditions agreed to between the suppliers and implementers of the (digital TV) service is the provision of the set-top box free of charge to enable this target group to receive the digital TV broadcast," he said when replying to a question from Datuk Abd Latiff Ahmad (BN-Mersing).

Abd Latiff had wanted to know whether the government would provide assistance or incentives to enable poor rural people to enjoy the digital TV broadcast when it is introduced.

Ahmad Shabery said the introduction of the digital TV service was in keeping with the trend in global broadcasting that allowed for the use of the radio wave spectrum in a more optimal and efficient manner.

"This allows for the broadcast of more interactive programmes and better quality video broadcasts," he said.

The minister said digital TV transmission tests were expected to begin at the end of this month via the transmitting stations in Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan, in Pahang; Bukit Besar in Terengganu and Machang in Kelantan.

"The installation of infrastructure is expected to be completed at the end of next year, with the Klang Valley being the last of the areas to get it in view of the need for greater development and cost," said the Kemaman MP.

Replying to a supplementary question from Abd Latiff, he said the government would ensure that the switch over from the analogue TV to the digital TV system did not run into snags and would see how best it could supervise the television stations in the country.

"The question of backtracking does not arise because, ultimately, the analogue system has to be terminated between 2018 and 2020 as part of the spectrum will be used for another purpose.

"In other words, whether we like it or not, we have to terminate the analogue TV like how we terminated the black-and-white broadcast. There is no choice, everyone has to migrate," he said.

Answering a supplementary question, from Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Baharu), on a claim that private television stations seemed to monopolise the broadcasting industry in the country so much so that it placed a burden on consumers, Ahmad Shabery said consumers had a choice.

He said the government was developing the digital TV system based on the free-to-air system with the use of transmitting towers to broadcast to consumers instead of using the satellite or cable systems.

This new model provided an alternative for consumers for the digital TV system when it was introduced, he added. — Bernama

Try getting fishbone antenna like the ones in JB my friend. Don't forget to post photos.
My zone will be next month hopefully but I don't have tuner. My TV can only tune DVB-T.
I read somewhere that there's a decoder in Thailand which was selling at RM69

Since it's a hassle to put the antenna ourside (weather aside), I probably have to get decent indoor antenna to pull in the signals. hmm.gif

Hi dear,
Until 1may 2015, in jb we still cannot scan malaysian chanel via dvbt2 box since the signal havent propagating here. However, u can enjoy singapores channels mostly from mio tv which about 11 chanels.

Even if your tv equipped with dvbt2 tuner, i strongly recomend u to buy the dvbt2 box where u can enjoy many fetures by it....

I also sell the box at my small electrical equipment shop(slightly cheaper than malaysian gov prices). Malaysia gov was announce to give FOC for those who entitled brim & mykasih. For instead user, in order to enjoy the fetures, they must buy the boxes at rm200.

I didn't sell these boxes. The DVB-T2 I'm using now, get from Hatyai Tesco-Lotus shopping mall cost RM99.

If you planned to go Thailand for this long holiday you may find DVB-T2 in electrical shops, Big-C & Tesco-Lotus shopping mall and 7-11 convenient store. Thai have more than 20+ types of DVB-T2 stb ranging from RM69 to RM 120+. RM69 model only have basic features.

Malaysia DVB-T2 broadcast format fully compliant with Thailand and Singapore DVB-T2 broadcast format at the moment.

Thai DVB-T2 box which is approved by NBTC at only RM69.

THB690 voucher for local ppl to redeem box price from Thai govt (NBTC) as part of subsidy per household. One house one voucher no matter how many members of family live in. For example, if slightly expensive THB890 stb purchased, BOX PRICE minus THB690 VOUCHER = THB200. , meaning THB200 or RM20 absorb your own.

Digital TV transmission at experimental stage

Pahang: Digital television broadcasting test transmissions are now at the experimental stage utilising transmitting stations in several areas throughout the country, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said the ministry was committed in making the transition from analog to digital television in line with developments in world broadcasting trend which was demanding for more interactive programmes.

"When this digital TV is successfully implemented, two million sets of "top box" will be supplied free of charge to the low-income group to enable them to enjoy television broadcast better," he told reporters after visiting three polling districts in Gading, Kedaik and Keratong in conjunction with the Rompin by-election, here Friday.

Commenting on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Ahmad Shabery said the national broadcasting station should broadcast more news on the rakyat (people) to ensure that their voices were heard.

In addition, RTM should create a news channels with 'breaking news' and 'real time' concept which was what the audience wanted especially with the advent of the digital era, he said.

"The 8pm prime-time concept is considered outdated and 'breaking news' is the new concept in the world of broadcasting and people want more 'live' coverage of news," he said.

He said RTM's workforce too should change their work culture by providing continuous news to the people.

However, he added, RTM had started with the new format of channel news since September last year over RTM1 known as 'BES 5-10'(Current Affairs).

Through the broadcast, RTM not only provided in-depth coverage of government policies and plans but also ongoing activities of the people throughout the country.

"In the past, 8pm was monopolised by news of the leaders, with BES 5-10 we have more time to broadcast the people's stories such as news on Felda development, the Dewan Rakyat, problems faced by fishermen and others," he said. - Bernama

Is HBO, CN, CNN & AXN in there for real? They would not dare to display if not for real right? They could get sued.
If it's true then Astro will definitely lose their market

Not like NHK, DW, TV5 France or BBC News (FTA), CNN no free even if you use big parabolic dish, it is encrypted. If they included in DTT, it may be encrypted for subscription. Don't so happy at the first place. Company who lead this DTT broadcast need to pay royalty to CNN and some other channels if rebroascast for local.

Apply what? This is just free over the air just like cuurent TV1, TV2, TV3, etc. At the moment all TV in shop still with analog tuner, so need to buy a set-top box to receive digital signal. In future, all TV will come with digital tuner and the box will become redundant. So the box business will fade out. Short term business. Now transmission I believe in Klang valley area only. for few years already

The digital tv & radio signal in KL is in DVB-T and not DVB-T2. It is a test transmission by RTM (hence RTM only content) and has been running for a couple of years already. MyTV test transmission will only come to KL in their last phase.

I know. I was asking to find out if DVB-T2 has been deployed here, since my DVB-T tuner did not list some of the channels in the last screenshot.

Digital TV services in phases next year

Source: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ases-next-year/

KUANTAN: Digital television services will be available across the country by the end of next year.

Communication minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said all districts in the east coast could receive digital transmissions by January.

MYTV Broadcasting, the company responsible for developing and managing the infrastructure for digital terrestrial broadcasting, had installed transmitters at Bukit Besar, Kuala Terengganu; Bukit Bakar, Machang, Kelantan; and Bukit Pelindung, Pahang.

“Decoders (set-top boxes) had been installed at selected homes since May 17 as part of the test phase by MYTV,” the minister told reporters.

He witnessed the installation of a decoder at a house belonging to A Rahman Abu Bakar in Kampung Rumbia, Beserah, Kuantan, on Saturday.

Ahmad Shabery said the test transmissions would be expanded to Sabah and Sarawak and then to the northern and southern parts of the peninsula followed by the Klang Valley at the end of the year.

He said two million decoders had been distributed free of charge to selected homes for the test transmissions, and they would be replaced with MYTV decoders when digital transmissions are fully operational early next year.

Ahmad Shabery said although transmissions were currently in standard definition, “it is almost equivalent to high definition”.

He said 40 broadcasters had shown interest in the platform offered by MYTV.
