Anti-flash gear
Anti-flash gear, also known simply as flash gear, is basic personal protective equipment consisting of a fire-resistant hood and fire-resistant gloves - often made of Nomex.

The purpose of anti-flash gear is to provide protection to the head, neck, face and hands from short-duration flame exposure and heat. This equipment is donned by all shipboard personnel whenever a fire breaks out or during periods of heightened readiness.

Anti-flash gear may be accompanied by other protective gear, such as life belts, helmets, gas masks, etc. While it may be worn by first-response fire-fighting parties, regular shipboard fire-fighters will usually wear full protective gear similar to civilian fire fighters.

Taiwan using drones to spy on China

Taiwan has started using unmanned surveillance aircraft to spy on China to reduce the risk to its pilots from an increased deployment of Chinese missiles, media reported Sunday.

user posted image

TAIPEI: Taiwan has started using unmanned surveillance aircraft to spy on China to reduce the risk to its pilots from an increased deployment of Chinese missiles, media reported on Sunday.

The army in March commissioned a fleet of 32 unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, developed by the military-run Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology.

Initially the drones, based in the eastern county of Taitung, were watching airspace in the east and south but lately they had extended their range to the Taiwan Strait, the Liberty Times said.

"Now they can effectively monitor China's military movements in the southeastern coastal area," an unnamed senior officer at the defence ministry was quoted as saying.

The paper said the operation has attracted interest from the United States which has been using the sophisticated high-altitude Global Hawk drone to collect military intelligence on China.

The US raised the topic during a recent military exchange programme with Taiwan, it said.

Taiwan's defence ministry declined to comment on the report.

Tensions across the Taiwan Strait have eased since President Ma Ying-jeou's China-friendly administration came to power in 2008 on a platform of strengthening trade and tourism links. He was re-elected in January 2012.

But Beijing has still not ruled out the use of force against the island should it declare independence, even though the two sides have been ruled separately since their split in 1949 at the end of a civil war.

Pakistani jets, artillery kill 18 in anti-militant offensive

Pakistani jets and artillery pounded militant hideouts in a lawless tribal district, killing 18 foreign and local insurgents in a massive ongoing offensive against the Taliban, officials said Sunday.

BANNU: Pakistani jets and artillery pounded militant hideouts in a lawless tribal district, killing 18 foreign and local insurgents in a massive ongoing offensive against the Taliban, officials said Sunday.

user posted image

Air strikes were carried out in Mosaki area, 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan on Sunday while artillery shelled militant hideouts in Kharkamar area, 30 kilometres west of Miranshah on Saturday night.

"Six terrorist hideouts and a huge ammunition cache were destroyed and at least 13 militants, most of them Uzbeks, were killed in the Saturday morning strikes," a security official told AFP.

He said five other insurgents were killed and two militant hideouts destroyed by artillery fire in Kharkamar area on Saturday night.

A local intelligence official confirmed the raids and militant casualties.

A military statement also said that a number of terrorists were killed but did not give the exact number.

Last month, Pakistan's military launched a long-awaited offensive in North Waziristan, aimed at wiping out longstanding militant strongholds in the area, which borders Afghanistan.

Jets and artillery began hitting rebel targets on June 15 to try to regain full control of the district after years of pressure from Washington and other powers.

The assault was finally launched after a dramatic attack on Karachi airport which killed dozens of people and marked the end of a faltering peace process with the Pakistani Taliban.

More than 400 militants and 20 soldiers have been killed in the offensive so far, according to the military. The area is off-limits to journalists and the number and identity of the dead is impossible to verify.

The rugged mountainous area has for years been a hideout for Islamist militants of all stripes -- including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan as well as foreign fighters including Uzbeks and Uighurs.

The latest air strikes came a day after militants crossed from the Afghan province of Kunar to launch a pre-dawn ambush on a check post in Bajaur tribal district, killing three Pakistani soldiers.

"Pakistan lodged a strong protest with the Afghan side in Islamabad and Kabul on Saturday and reiterated that Afghanistan should eliminate the terrorist sanctuaries and not allow its territory to be used against Pakistan," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The United States on Monday accused Moscow of providing pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine with military equipment such as tanks and rocket launchers.

WASHINGTON: The United States on Monday accused Moscow of providing pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine with military equipment such as tanks and rocket launchers. Washington also claimed Moscow was redeploying forces to the volatile border between the ex-Soviet states.

"While Russia says it seeks peace, its actions do not match its rhetoric. We have no evidence that Russia's support for the separatists has ceased," the State Department said. "In fact, we assess that Russia continues to provide them with heavy weapons, other military equipment and financing, and continues to allow militants to enter Ukraine freely."

user posted image

The allegations came as Ukrainian forces hunted for the crew of a downed military plane after Kiev said the aircraft was "likely" shot down from Russia, ratcheting up tensions between the two countries. In a detailed "fact sheet," the State Department singled out a "deployment site" in southwest Russia, saying Moscow "continues to accumulate significant amounts of equipment" there and had roughly doubled the number of tanks, armored vehicles, and rocket launchers at the location.

Washington noted that "more advanced defense systems" have arrived at the site, which also houses artillery, and that it was confident Moscow was mobilizing additional tanks that are no longer in the army's active inventory to the spot. "We are concerned much of this equipment will be transferred to separatists, as we are confident Russia has already delivered tanks and multiple rocket launchers to them from this site," it said. "Available information indicates Moscow has recently transferred some Soviet-era tanks and artillery to the separatists and that over the weekend several military vehicles crossed the border."

The State Department accused Moscow of redeploying new forces "extremely close to the Ukrainian border," adding Washington has "information that a significant number of additional military units are also in the process of deploying to the border." Washington said recruiting efforts for separatist militants were growing inside Russia and that the "Donetsk Peoples' Republic" had set up an office for this purpose in Moscow.

"As the United States and our European allies have repeatedly stated, we call on the Russian government to halt its material support for the separatists, to use its influence with the separatists to push them to lay down their arms and abide by a ceasefire and to release all hostages," it said.

Singapore and US armies in Exercise Tiger Balm

user posted image

The US and Singapore kick off two weeks of bilateral military training exercises in Hawaii.

user posted image

SINGAPORE: Some 300 personnel are taking part in Exercise Tiger Balm between the Singapore and United States armies in Hawaii. The annual bilateral exercise was flagged off on Tuesday morning (July 15) and focuses on peace support and stability operations.

Colonel Mohamad Fadzully bin Abas who helped co-officiate the opening ceremony, says it is good platform for both armies to exchange best practices. United States Army Pacific Brigadier-General Todd B. McCaffrey said it would improve the US armed forces' interoperability with "one of Asia's most advanced and well trained armies".

The exercises will be held for two weeks until July 27.

Pirates have attacked a Malaysian tanker and stolen the gas oil cargo before releasing it in the latest attack in Southeast Asian waters, officials said on Wednesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Pirates have attacked a Malaysian tanker and stolen the gas oil cargo before releasing it in the latest attack in Southeast Asian waters, officials said on Wednesday.

The MT Oriental Glory was hijacked late Tuesday in the South China Sea off southeast Malaysia, the navy said in a statement.

Pirates stole its gas oil cargo before setting it adrift with damaged communication equipment and engine, the statement said.

Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau's Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Centre, warned of the increasing number of incidents in the area.

The ship, whose crew was unhurt, was travelling from Singapore to Sandakan in the Malaysian part of Borneo island.

"This is the ninth attack in these waters recently... It's a big concern," he told AFP, urging ships to be vigilant so that pirates could not surprise them.

Earlier this month pirates hijacked a Singapore-managed tanker in the South China Sea, stealing part of its cargo and damaging its communication equipment.

The spate of attacks has raised fears that Southeast Asia's vital shipping lanes could once again become a hotspot for piracy unless countries in the area quickly step up patrols.

Regional cooperation to crack down on the menace has successfully curbed such attacks in the past.
