QUOTE(hfi @ May 12 2014, 10:14 PM)
But it's a whole different system. We can't take a player's position and compare it like for like, and neglect their qualities and roles for their teams. I've been critical of Gerrard at the start of the season where he had been lackluster and it took us several different formations to get the most out of him. We went from 4231 to 352 and neither of those formations worked for him. But credit to him and BR, he grew as one of the best players in hte league. Sure he has his weakness but you just can't argue his contributions this season. Pivotal goals after goals - granted most of it were pens but they were crucial match winning pens. His deliveries have been pin point accurate and is one of the reasons why Skrtel have been banging in goals this season. He's also one out of the two players who can take a freekick with deadly result.

I will have no problem milking him for the next 2-3 years if he can maintain this kind of form. I think what we need this summer is another box to box midfielder. Like you said, we are similar to Juventus in that we deploy a 3 man midfielders and perhaps this has been said already but we really missed Hendo from his suspension. Allen may still have a role in the team but i worry about Lucas - he looks really out of pace and he doesn't look comfortable operating in tight pockets unlike Hendo who seems to be growing in confidence and ability.

Yeah but don't misunderstand me. I'm not being critical of Stevie, in fact I'm loving him in this new role and he has won us more points from this position than losing. My point is if we are to continue using him in this position we need 2 box to box midfielders to help him out. Allen is a good squad player but Lucas from what we have seen this season is very lacking in his offensive game. Yes he was an attacking midfielder but he seem to have lost his attacking instincts. Maybe BR can work some magic with him this off season but we need to bring in another Hendo type player. If we are to stop playing with a defensive specialist type defensive midfielder I don't see a future for Lucas in this squad because I don't think he is capable of doing what Stevie's currently doing for us in that role.

Juventus actually plays a 3-5-2 so there is also another centre back to help cover for Pirlo. Both their wingbacks are predominantly defensive players with lots of stamina to provide width running up and down the flanks. Flanno has a not very good statistic of being dribbled past many times this season but I think that is down to experience and not being a left footer which also affects his offensive game since he is almost always obliged to pass the ball back into midfield instead of swinging in a cross with his less capable left foot. Glen Johnson on the other hand has been horrendous for at least 2 seasons now. He used to be good enough offensively to negate his defensive flaws but he hasn't been able to have much impact down the flanks as we were used to seeing in his prime. Strengthening our full back positions should be a priority this off season. 27m for Luke Shaw might look hugely inflated but I would say he is already 2nd best if not the best LB in England at age 18. Highly unlikely but would be a dream if we managed to hijack Utd's move. Will definitely be more happy with Shaw than Lallana.

Speaking of Lucas... are we letting him go?
I feel bad for the lad. He was so good, until he took that tackle to the leg.

Agree mate. My point was only to point out that if we put a defensive player in the Stevie role it would completely change the dynamic of the team as a traditional DM doesn't provide enough 'brain' in a 3 man midfield. One only has to look at Spurs with incredible amount of engines but lacking that a little of bit of guile and creativity to dominate the midfield. Which puts me back to Lucas whos time may be up because he lacks both engine and guile to succeed in our midfield. He's still a good DM but i think we have evolved from DM and while i feel he may still be able to play box to box, it may be simpler if we just go ahead and get a a box to box player.

Personally, i feel we've been let down the most by our fullbacks the most this season.Flanno we know can't cross to save his life and playing on his weaker side puts him in an awkward position, but overall i think he had a decent season for a 'new blood'. But Johnson hasn't been good enough for some time now. We used to overlook his defensive frailty because he overcompensated that with his attacking ability. But these days, he can neither attack nor defend. I think we've come to a point where we need to choose either Johnson or Flanno as our main rightback, i would personally cull the former as he seems like the fat we need trimming.

Johnson is still England's best right back? For goodness sake.

We currently have Johnson, Flanagan, Kelly and Wisdom playing there. Just hope that Wisdom turns good too next season just like Sterling and Flanagan this season.

Liverpool FC are facing a battle with Napoli for the services of former star Javier Mascherano, Catalan newspaper Sport claims.

And the Reds are set to be given a big boost, with the Argentine midfielder wanting to move back to Anfield.

Sport believes Mascherano wants to end his career on Merseyside and that Liverpool are interested - but they'll have to move forward with any potential wish to sign him to make Mascherano happy.

Meanwhile, the Reds face a battle with Chelsea over Sevilla left back Alberto Moreno, according to The Times.

With David Luiz potentially moving to Barcelona and Luke Shaw looking bound for Manchester United, Chelsea will want to strengthen their defence and have money to do so this summer.

But the newspaper claims Liverpool have also expressed interest in signing the talented 21-year-old and will push the London side all the way.

Further up the pitch, radio station Talksport claim Liverpool have made enquiries to Hertha Berlin about their striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

The 22-year-old spent the season on loan at Hamburg, scoring 13 goals in just 20 Bundesliga outings.

But Newcastle are thought to be in pole position for the 22-year-old, with Tottenham also interested.

Mascherano? Why would we need him when we are doing away with specialized defensive midfielders. He's basically a much more expensive upgrade of Lucas who can barely get any game time and I would say Mascherano's offensive game is even more limited than Lucas' so it is between his tackles or Stevie's passes. Modern day DMs seem to be trending more towards a hybrid of Pirlo and Makelele. Javi Martinez, Fernandinho and Busquets are some examples.

Caulker hasn't impressed me enough so personally not too keen on him. Lovren would be a nice one to have with his ability to play the ball like Agger.

Alberto Moreno looks a good prospect but a fee of 20-30m for someone unproven and on paper looks very lacking on the physical side might struggle to adapt to the league. Shaw will be the dream signing but looks impossible now. Ricardo Rodriguez might be a better alternative than Moreno for his bigger stature and has 2 good feet. Marcos Rojo has also impressed me and he can play both CB and LB which is a plus point. Maybe too soon to call time on Sakho but if we can get a good offer then why not. He has only managed 1 clean sheet in 19 games, a very very worrying statistic.

Barkley? Everton will never!

Shaqiri? Yes please, but only possible if he wants to leave Bayern. Up till now he seems to be contented in his backup role there.

Angel Di Maria is also another dream signing I have in mind. Transformed into a centre midfielder this season by Ancelotti and preferred over Isco for his work rate. If we are targeting Lallana for his versatility and work rate I don't see how Di Maria is inferior to him. Price might not even differ much from Lallana's considering the inflated fee being thrown around by the media now.
