Borini story just Fab

OF all the decisions Brendan Rodgers has got right this season, sending Fabio Borini on loan to Sunderland may just have proved the shrewdest of them all!

You couldn’t write a story like that; a lad on loan from Liverpool, an ex-Chelsea trainee, scoring a winning penalty against Chelsea for his loan club, to hand the initiative to his parent club in the race for the title.

That’s Borini’s biggest contribution to Liverpool since he joined the club 20 months ago, and it might help ensure he has a future at Anfield.

The fans love him now, and in fairness to him, he’s had a decent season in a struggling side. If he comes back in the summer, and if Liverpool are champions, he will be getting a fair few pats on the back for sure. Including one from me

John Aldridge: Reds fans never fail to rise to the occasion

Liverpool supporters never fail, do they? At most clubs, a game played between a gang of old players might attract a semi-decent crowd, a few thousand maybe.

Not here. Not at Liverpool FC .

There were more than 45,000 packed inside Anfield yesterday for the Celebration of the 96 game , and what a wonderful occasion they witnessed. This club knows how to put on a show for supporters, and the supporters in turn know how to make that show even more special.

I’m sure a lot of those fans were down at Norwich the previous day , trekking across the country to support their team on a Bank Holiday weekend, and then heading to Anfield 24 hours later. That’s dedication for you, and that’s why Reds fans are unrivalled. Their support is unconditional.

Personally, it was a privilege for me to be involved in the game, alongside some of the greatest players this club has had. I think the fact that so many of those great players were desperate to be involved says everything about what this club is, and how it gets under your skin.

The game itself was a decent contest. I had a good chance to get a goal down at the Anfield Road end, but when you get to 55 and you’ve got Sami Hyypia chasing back with you, you don’t stand much of a chance!

In fact, I have to say, some of those international legends look like they could still be playing!

Not that it bothers me, of course. Yesterday wasn’t about me, or any of the players, it was about the supporters, and about paying the best possible tribute to the Hillsborough victims, families and survivors.

I don’t think it could have been done any better, personally. It was good fun, the weather was great and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.

Some of the players flew in especially for the game. They wanted to be part of a special occasion, and to do their bit for two fantastic causes. The gate alone will have raised plenty, and we had a good night at the charity function in the Malmaison last night too, so hopefully there will be plenty going into the kitty from the day.

It’s the least we, as former players, can do.

All in all, a wonderful Easter Monday. Play in front of a full house at Anfield or sit and stuff your face with chocolate? Tough choice!

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed he uses boxing to keep himself in peak physical condition.

The Frenchman, who signed for Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in September last year, has made 17 appearances for the club in his debut season at Anfield.

The 24-year-old has also been doing everything he can to help his game and his fitness regime includes various training methods, having recently had his boxing equipment imported from his home country.

"I'm someone who likes to do physical work outside of my day-to-day training," Sakho told the club's official website.

"I like boxing as a sport and, yes, I like to do boxing-based training as a way of varying my cardiovascular exercise a little - but I don't actually fight I have to tell you!

"I know my job is a footballer and I want to be fit for that.

"This just allows me to exercise in a slightly different way.

"You could say that I like to let off steam on the punch bag.

"I really appreciate boxing as a sport and I like to train once or twice a week with my coach, and it's an added extra positive for me."

The centre-back also claimed that the sport increases his strength, something which is a big part of his game.

"It helps me to prepare for games," he added. "It helps me to be physically even stronger.

"It's part of that 'invisible' work that benefits me on an individual level."

Boxing   

He needs to learn how to pass the ball from Agger though. Too much boxing won't hide his lack of passing accuracy.
