Talking about fuel consumption, my car fuel consumption seems bad these day..

After 3,000 km, the fuel consumption recorded only 10.8km/l. (purely in town).

Previously I am clocking in an average of around 12.1km/l. (mix driving in town and highway).

Don't know is it something is wrong with the engine. So far, the engine is smooth and silent.

fuel strainer still in good shape or time to replace ?
*
Replaced some 17000km ago.

For your info, fuel strainer will not affect fuel consumption.

Initially I thought fuel strainer is a fuel filter but it is not.. It is just a plastic housing to store the fuel wiring to the fuel pump and act as a locking mechanism in the fuel tank.

The only thing that actually filters the fuel is a teabag looking thingy which is attached at the bottom of the fuel pump. When we replace the fuel strainer, this teabag filter doesn't comes with it.

Wait what? All these while macam kena con then biggrin.gif
Whats the use of a strainer then?
*
Yes. We memang kena conned biggrin.gif

I think Honda recommended to replace the strainer to prevent old strainer from cracking since we're talking about fuel. It is a safety measure. (afterall, it's made out of plastic).

To be honest, I feel the strainer can easily last beyond 100,000km. Don't know why SC recommends to replace them so early.

My mechanic suggested to replace the strainer, fuel pump and the pump filter at one go instead of changing the strainer only. I will do so probably when I reach 200,000 km. biggrin.gif

Quote from Honda Specialist Service Center ma... @ V Mag Motorsport.

I asked him punya.. when we replace the strainer, does it include the teabag filter..

He said the strainer set doesn't include the teabag filter. That is why he is also baffled as to why Honda requires the strainer to be replace at such short interval.

The above car is the iDSI City. Already quite old and the fuel pump must have been more than 15 years. It's about time it fails actually and is due for replacement.

Whats the symptom?

You can see brake oil leaking down through the brake master pump.

Once it leaks, must faster go replace it... else it will corrode the paint and create rust.

It is best to inspect the engine bay once every 2 weeks to a month since our car is getting old.

I always do that and it saved me a lot of hassle from breaking down in the middle of the road.

What is the mileage of your car now?

I suggest things to look out for on an older vehicles are as below:

1) Radiator top casing - The top casing is made out of plastic. As it age, it will become yellowish and you can see small white lines which indicates cracks are forming. Mine is showing those signs already and I will replace them soon.

2) Coolant - If your coolant decrease on a small amount every few months, I think it is ok since older age vehicles will sure to have small amount of coolant vapor leak. Mine will decrease about 50ml every 2 months. Just top up with coolant or distilled water. If it decreases a lot, then you may want to send it for inspection by a mechanic.

3) Master Brake Cylinder - Just a visual inspection to see any brake fluids are leaking down the master pump. Quite easy to observe.

4) Air Filter - You can easily open your air filter box and inspect whether it is clean or not. A very simple DIY job to replace yourself.

5) Cabin Filter - Same as above but this is located under the glove box.

Wow! great stuff. My left side mirror can't flip too but I don't dare to DIY it as it looks complicated.

Repairing it will cost RM200 which is quite expensive. sad.gif

What is the DIY cost?

Hi, I'm planning to change all my front lights including fog lamps to white LED, may I know our model uses which type of LED? And any recommended brands on these LED bulb? Thanks.
*
I would suggest you to use the OSRAM Nightbreaker light bulb. I am not sure whether they are LED or Halogen but OSRAM is a reputable brand that you can trust.

whats the price of a ori headlight? *touch wood* mine still working, and i'm pretty happy with it. even the light cover is still good. if after market, worry it will burn/stain or make the cover yellowish.

but tailgate/brake light and small side front light did burnt though, but those are okay, just small bulb that cost a few ringgit. something foreman just give for free. if do other services.
*
I think as long you get reputable light bulbs like OSRAM or Philips, it should last quite a long time.

Ohh.. I think you're referring to those with 'Burned' tinted headlights.

As long as your headlights are not tinted, you won't have that issue.

Hi City owners, may I know other than Engine Oil and Transmission Oil service, what else needs to be replaced regularly? I have bought a City in January, and it is going to be 1 year soon since I drive this car(2014 model). I'm planning to check the engine mounting as the car seems to vibrate more, compared to when I first get the car.

Try to clean the throttle body first. Make sure you find a mechanic that removes it and clean thoroughly.

It make wonders how well your engine idles after cleaning this part.

No. Im asking in general. I don't think throttle cleaning is part of normal maintenance.

Asking service record so you can discount out possibility that previous owner topup rainwater (old practice by outside workshop) to your coolanr, etc.
*
To be honest, even SC will top up with only tap water unless you request them to perform drain and refill of coolant.

SC is all about making money and they will not give out free coolant top up to their customers.

You can still perform drain and refill of coolant as long as there's no rust build up on the cooling system. Even if there are rust, performing drain and refill a few times should clear out most of it.

Yeah. But sometimes foreman suka suka do themselves so have to keep an eye. Or somestimes i will fill it up firsr before go workshop.

You're right. I dont even want them to fill my washer fluid. But that's not as critical as coolant. Ages ago hear friend said his got stuck coz got pasir or pebble. So i always used filtered water. Lol. Make sense though.

Last time i used to fill with off the shelf washer fluid but years later notice got spray stain on hood and the top. Stop using it since then.

You seems to be an owner who really takes care of his car.

How old is your City now and any repairs done to it previously?

QUOTE(cempedaklife @ Dec 10 2020, 08:41 AM)
hard to say. too many variables. i think i shared here before.

last year when i have my 2nd kid, we were thinking city no longer suit us.
with a toddler and baby.

end up wife say still okay, put 2 child seat behind, she have to cramp to the middle to take care of them.
as they cant be unsupervised (one is still so young) and the older one is not old (and safe) enuf to place in front seat. (4 going 5 years).

so give and take a year or 2, the older one should be able to move to the front.

i could also buy a 2nd hand new car. thinking to upgrade but not willing to pay over 100k so 2nd seems to be the way.

if that is the case, then city could be:
a) we keep as 2nd car. my wife has license but never really drive so it's all rusty skill.
b) i send it back to my hometown in east malaysia where my bro is still driving his old old old old old SEG.

all in all, should still want to keep it in my family.

but at the same time, i'm really comfortable not paying any car loan now. and in any case, if i were to get a new car, the selling of city and hence the money that would be gotten and put into new car downpayment is not taken into consideration at all.

i come from a family with no car. we took buses everywhere, never really travel for leisure, and depends on good will of neighbours to fetch us for the weekly pasar and supermarket going.  the first car in my family was that old SEG which my bro bought when its like 10 years old back in circa 2002. even when i started working in kl, i didnt get city until i worked 5 years, in part due to budget, in part due to the fact that i want my first car to last and satisfied my expectation of a car for a long long time, instead of getting one as a stop gap measure. for those 5 years, i'm grateful for my colleagues and friends, who dont mind fetching me from my house or the nearest lrt to their convenience.

when i started dating my wife, i dont have a car. when i wanted to buy a car, i was expecting her minimum expectation would be a persona or H or T. city/vios are always my target. i told her i liked myvi too but it may be abit stretch to make it last so long (in terms of future expansion or my expectation of a car). to my surprise, she said she rather me getting a saga than a myvi. i took the decision to straight go to city instead due to the reasons above. so by now you should have guessed its not unnatural for me and my family to use car for a long long time. and for me, i'm just grateful to have a car, and quite a good one too, due to my background.
*
My City will be 11 years next year. Loan already paid off some 8 years ago and same as you, I am comfortable not paying car loans now. I plan to use this car for as long as possible since it is easy to maintain and quite reliable.

I've already learned the in and out of this City in terms of parts, parts pricing and repairs.. If I were to get a new car, the learning process will start again.

I am not looking at those fancy-mancy cars with lots of electronic gadgets. Just thinking of it breaking down, troubleshooting and also the cost of repair really turns me off.
