QUOTE(iq_myst @ May 14 2014, 05:34 PM) VTEC always ON? I thought the letter V stands for variable. And that what makes the engine special compared to non VTEC engine.. Huhu from what i remember, for VTEC there is a kick in at around 4000 RPM.. not so sure for iVTEC.. think for iVTEC the kickin is smoother so cant really hear it. mana experts |

i-VTEC has additional Variable Timing Control (VTC) while VTEC doesn't. In an i-VTEC engine, the VTC is always activated while the VTEC system only kicks in at a specific rpm.
The "VTEC Kicked in yooo" can still be felt in an i-VTEC system, depending on how aggressive (performance)/soft (fuel economy) the VTEC is tuned. In cars like Honda City, for example the VTEC is tuned to kick in early (3,600rpm~4,500 for example) because this type of cars are usually tuned for fuel efficiency. Performance oriented Honda cars, like the Civic Type R, their VTEC kicks in later, usually at higher rpm (5,600~6000rpm). This post has been edited by V12Kompressor: May 14 2014, 06:30 PM |

QUOTE(zaFrOoNaLdO @ May 14 2014, 06:50 PM) so what does the VTEC really do? its not like a turbo or sumting right? no. not even close. Ive tried to wiki it, but cant really understand.. Need someone to explain in layman terms. hehe. sorry noob. VTEC basically increases the lift and duration of the cam profile. A high-lift and long duration cam profile is good for power delivery in high rpm and also a slightly higher redline (higher redline=can utilize max power for a longer period before upshift), while a normal cam profile is better suited for fuel economy, smoothness and better everyday drivability. What VTEC does is basically combines the best of both cams in a single engine; normal cam for normal everyday driving and switches to a high lift and long duration cam profile whenever the throttle is floored. Oh, and i forgot. there's also another type of VTEC that works differently. It doesn't switches cam like I mentioned above, but instead it controls the opening of the intake valve. The system limits the amount of opening of the intake valve during low rpm for better fuel efficiency. What makes this system unique is that the system can control individually which intake valve to open fully and which to open partially. Then at a specific rpm (around 2,500~3,500rpm) the system allows all four valves to open fully to resume normal operation. I am not sure what type of VTEC is used in the L15A. |

The L15A7 iVTEC has the variable lift IINM, the "real" VTEC.
But due to the nature of CVT (and the advancement of technology), there is no more "prraaannnnggggg" VTEC KICK IN YO!! feel anymore. The transition should be smooth, but still noticable. |

QUOTE(dares @ May 14 2014, 08:34 PM) The L15A7 iVTEC has the variable lift IINM, the "real" VTEC. If I'm not mistaken, small vtec all lack the lift, which explain the lack of kick. For Toyota, they name it so different that its impossible to get it wrong. Toyota Vios only has VVTi which also lack the lift which is present on Celica with its VVTLi. These small engine all have another set of lobes on camshaft for different timing only. But due to the nature of CVT (and the advancement of technology), there is no more "prraaannnnggggg" VTEC KICK IN YO!! feel anymore. The transition should be smooth, but still noticable. But this site say it has lift.
