1. Print all the past year papers for all subjects eventhough it costs 10p per page. Why? because lecturers LOVE to repeat questions, they have used the same method for many years and see no reason to change it.

2. They don't care at all what you do as a student, you want to hand in coursework or don't it's up to you. If possible write good english.

3. You WILL meet absolutely horrible lecturers or tutors or project supervisors. There will be lecturers who will teach like they don't care if you pass or fail and lecturers who give their exams scripts to PHd students to mark which they aren't supposed to.Don't be suprised if you get an unexpected poor mark and then expect the lecturer to entertain you they might just brush you off.

4. Try not to be late for class as some lecturers might tick you off if you get in late, it depends a lot on your lecturer, some really don't mind.

5. Expect to be the receiving end of racist comments or calls. Just WALK AWAY, even if they are saying terrible things about your GF or BF, just walk away.

6. ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE it will be the best thing ever to happen in your life. Don't let petty things get you down, if you feel lonely or homesick do call home.
*
1. For my university, they never take exactly the same past year paper questions but they just have similar ones only. I'm doing Computer Science and I have 500 pages allowance per term. hehe

2. Well that's true but if you're doing Engineering or Science related subjects, they want to see facts because my English is not that good but I manage to get 70++ for assignments bcuz they see how well I understand the question and do the assignment.

3. That's true. Whatever it is, if you get worst lecturer, good luck in studying that yourself.

4. I'm not sure about that. MAny students nowadays always turn out late in class. I do that sometimes too hehe.. For the first few weeks, everyone is punctual but after that everyone went missing but you can't control them. There are 100++ students in a lecture theatre. What can you do? You can't lock the door because students have rights to enter the theatre room whenever they want. Students are actually paying to study in uni so lecturers sometimes cannot do anything also. Usually lecturers do not care much!

5. These usually apply to those black ppl. They like to say 'ni hao ma' for chinese want. Quite irritating but true, just walk away whatever ppl say.

6. I do get lonely sometimes. But if you really coming to UK to study, you gotta be lonely!! I mean even though you've friends, there'll be times you'll be lonely as well.

Do's

1.bring your mini rice cooker along if rice is the main reason you're still alive until now...

2.smuggle your pir*ted stuff like ps2 or pc games or software coz evrythings there are original stuff with of course 'original' prices...careful tho esp during the checks in the airport...but all ppl i know(that includes me) escaped unscathed tongue.gif

3.check out ebay.co.uk for online shopping.i know most malaysians arent familiar with online shopping but once u get the taste of it,u`ll find it hard to resist bidding for an item you like,or in my frens case, bidding just for the sake of it.

4.cross the roads without looking left or right beforehand coz the britons will politely stop their cars for you(slightly exaggerated but hopefully ur bright enuff to get my point)and warning-this tips as not been tried on London Underground trains yet..if u wish to do so,do at your own risk

5.save money and go to europe

6.shut the window if your british fren asked you to 'shoot' the window

7.check out ARGOS.
1. Well you can cook using saucepan want. Well, if you depend on rice only, then bring one with you.

2. Oooh.. luckily I'm not really big fan of ps2. However, I do know they have cheap Game dvds. I bought LOTR special edition extended DVD for just £24.00 and it cost around RM300++ in Malaysia.
Look out for winter or summer sale. They really sell cheap stuffs!!

3. yeah nice!!! lots of online UK websites are usually good cause they have free delivery!!!

4. haha, you gotta be careful sometimes too.

5. True also!!! But try to visit the whole UK if possible. Im sure Interenational office offers daytrips.

6. Well not sure what this means!

7. Well I bought some of my stuffs from ARGOS such as kitchen utensils.
However, for cheap cheap stuffs, you can go to 99pence or poundland where you can get tupperwares, cups and other things you need while you're in UK.

me rclxms.gif , but in this year's intake. study civil engineering. what course are u studying? and HSBC bank at birmingham sucks? cause i plan to apply soon icon_question.gif . and i'm blur about the fee payment of the university especially when pays in term.
*
Hey there Kelvin. I'm doing Computer Science gonna be final year this year.
When they said ' pay in term ' means you pay every term. There's gonna be a date where your account will be credited.
You've to set up a direct debit with the bank when you come here.
No worries, if you're confuse with this, you can ask around when you come to UK!!

LAST TIPS: NEVER BE SHY TO ASK FOR HELP!!! Eventhough they speak fast, as long as you speak SLOW, LOUD and CLEAR, I'm sure they are willing to help you!!

If you drink, drink less.

If you smoke, smoke less.

If you do neither, now's not the time to start.

Ignore everything above if you're
-Loaded
-Don't care when you die
-But mostly if you're loaded and can afford the habits.

cheers

EDIT:
-ignore that. it's cold and you need a drink
-Sheffield's in Yorkshire I remember and that whole damned place is peppered with different accents and slangs.
-pissed means drunk/wasted. it'll save you the confusion i got.
-catch concerts there. the uk is a more fertile ground for musical acts than malaysia.
-Europe

You misunderstand me.. I bought the extended trilogy DVD for £24 which is around RM160.
But when I see in Malaysia, they are selling the same thing for RM300++

You bought £45 eh? That's expensive!!

Ah okay wait I misunderstood. Sorry, I shouldn't post replies when I'm too sleepy; I thought you were saying you paid the 24 quid for each of the three LOTR extended versions. LOL sorry.

Well during that time, almost everywhere the LOTR special extended DVD trilogy boxset (12 DVDs to watch, woooot!) was being sold for 60 quid (it got released december 2004), so 45 quid was literally a steal! Of course now after a year and a half, the prices would have dropped some!

I think only one video shop that has £24 though.. Most shops like hmv, amazon or virgin are selling £40++ still.
I bought it from musiczone.
That's really cheap!!

^ Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and 3G. These are the main ones. However, I couldn't say which one is good because each year, they will offer different type of deals. For example, I used T-Mobile when I first got there (because they offered Samsung E700 first). After my T-Mobile contract ended, I switched to O2 (for better deal). So, I for one, don't really stick to one telco provider. I go for the best rates and best package that I need. One more thing, UK telco providers allow you to bring your hp number along to another telco brand (if you have the thought of changing). Practically, it save the hassle of telling everybody your new hp number. That's what I like the most.

Note: By all means, try to avoid 3G (the brand) even though they offer good packages. Their coverage is quite bad because they are still new in the market.

That's 3 network by Hutchison. Yeah I bought their 3g prepaid package lol. The phone is damn cheap. For contract phones I reccomend Vodafone since they always have latest product offering.

here's something msia still doesnt have: good phone deals. here in the UK, u dont buy phones. u buy the package. every now and then, mobile companies will offer u excellent packages which includes hundreds of free minutes, text & video messages and FREE mobile phone for about GBP 15++ a month.

free mobile phone.

u dont buy em. the contract is a year. u just pay for the free minutes/messages. and after a year, they'll offer a better package with newer phone, and u keep the old phone. sell it if u want. i gave it to my sister back in msia.

it's a good wedding present/hantaran too! just spend GBP15 a month, and u'll get a RM2500 worth of mobile phone to show off to ur wife-to-be's families. that's what i'm doing right now laugh.gif

^ Yeap. That's the thing that I like the most. Each year, you'll get new FREE phone. If you want to have the latest, you might have to pay a little bit more. Else, you'll get a nice decent phone.

I did the same thing as you last time. Subscribed a line, pay till I go back Malaysia, and give my phone to my sister because I am going to get a new one when I get back there rclxm9.gif .

Another note, I was told that if you (a student) purchase an Apple laptop there, you'll get an iPod for free. I'm not sure it applies right now or not. unsure.gif

Well, you're a girl, so haircuts are gonna cost you. I think 20 quid is the going average now. If you're studying in London, I think you can get it done in Chinatown for a tenner.

Note:
If you wear spectacles, remember to bring an extra pair along. To get a pair over there will cost you a bomb. Not only that, they require you to do eye test with their specialist first (which cost a lot too).

Well, I think most of forummers mentioned about the way lecturers teach and how lectures are conducted.

Average students per lecture : 150 ~ 200 students

Lecturer explains while you are copying their notes. Some lecturers will distribute their notes before the lecture commence. Some will tell you where to download so that you could print it out before attending their lectures. A significant difference between lecturers over there and here, that is they don't spoon feed. They don't tell you what to study for exam. They would just tell you which topic is not in the exams (but most likely all that you studied will be in the exams). IF you don't understand anything, please don't hesitate to ask even though it is a stupid question. They are very helpful and friendly.

And as I said earlier (I think), some of the lecturers are foreigners. Like mine, I got a lecturer from China and one from Korea. So, you might find it hard to catch what they are trying to say. But no worries, you will understand within 2 weeks or so.

I did engineering in Sheffield. 100% based on exams every semester. 20 to 30 credits are denoted to labs and reports every semester. How Malaysians cope? Hhhmm... I guess it is easy to cope up. But it all depends on you. smile.gif

A haircut in Sheffield will cost around £20 or more for ladies. Mens could go to the barber located at West Street. Cost around £8 to £10. They might give you discount so, show your student card if it applies to student.

No problem at all. The voltage regulation is the same as Malaysia.

the route i'm taking now is inti college --> diploma in civil engineering 2+2 --> to UK's universities --> i choose U of Birmingham --> total cost for another two years BEng (tution +living cost) is RM 220K (this cost is not included your working income in UK and scholarship).
the route i'm taking has more choices rclxms.gif . i can apply through a lot of universities include AUS universities also. currently i spot the cheapest offer is from U of Plymouth which is about 180K. if u got work that will help u alot also.
but one thing is very "Ma Fan" that is the UK Visa application. this means u need to show them u have this amount RM220K if u want to study in Birmingham. i.e from your mother, father saving, OD, fix-D and so on. so this u need to plan earlier. birmingham offer scholarship for international student also which is worth total about 3000 each year. subject to your performance icon_idea.gif .
